Justin Fuente's Virginia Tech coaching staff has two more reported additions.
Thursday FootballScoop published a single-sourced report claiming Memphis co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks Brad Cornelsen will join the Hokies' ranks after the Tigers' bowl game. Thayer Evans of Sports Illustrated reported Cornelsen will be the Hokies' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. 2015 is Cornelsen's fourth season coaching Memphis' quarterbacks. He was named Memphis' co-offensive coordinator in January. Cornelsen impacted the development of QB Paxton Lynch (projected by plenty of analysts to be the top QB selected in the 2016 NFL Draft), and in 2012 mentored Jacob Karam (64%, 1,895 yards, 14 TDs, 3 INTs).
Wednesday Jason Stamm of HokieHaven.com reported Memphis OL coach Vance Vice will also head to Blacksburg after Memphis' bowl game. Vice coached Murray State's offensive line in 1999 during Justin Fuente senior season. Statistics paint an incomplete picture of o-line production, but it's worth a quick examination. Memphis' offensive line ranked T-21st, 18th, T-88th, 61st in sacks allowed per game from 2015-2012, respectively. Advanced statistics better distinguish between o-line and running back accountability in rushing production. In the 2015 regular season, Memphis ranked 75th (38.5%) in Opportunity Rate, 35th (72.0%) in Power Success Rate, and 79th (19.9%) in Stuff Rate according to Football Study Hall's advanced statistical profile of Memphis. The three are defined in-depth by Football Study Hall, but briefly Memphis' o-line faired very well rushing in short yardage situations, but below average otherwise.
Don't expect any of these hires to be officially announced until after the Tigers' bowl game.
"I want to be sure I pay due respect to the University of Memphis by making sure that they have enough guys there to win their bowl game because I want them to go win," Fuente said when asked about a timeline for putting his staff together at an introductory press conference Monday. "...There will be some guys that will stay there the entire time until they're done and then we'll bring them aboard."
