Virginia Tech 39 Pittsburgh 36

The Hokies tightened their grip on the ACC Coastal Division.

The Hokies won a back-and-forth game against the Panthers in which they racked up 556 yards and won the time of possession by a margin of 33:17 to 26:43.

And Joel just had a heart attack.

Outside the hashmarks of Virginia Tech's First Win at Heinz Field (1-4).

Isaiah Ford is now Virginia Tech's all-time leader in career receiving touchdowns.

Ford finished with 10 catches for 143 yards and the record-breaking score.

Pat Narduzzi was not pleased with the officiating.

Our guys had to push off to get separation because they were hanging on our guys.. I swear I saw #38 trying to nurse on Hodges.

Lol pat....they werent calling anything all night take a loss like a humble person. You got beat. Live with it

Officiating was awful. I saw way more PI than pushing off. Nards can suck it.

Stick it in! Stick it in!

Gotta disagree here...... That first TD drive of theirs was set up by a totally bogus call on a 3rd down PI call on Tech. I am convinced the ref was throwing Nads a bone after the tantrum he had just thrown earlier........

Lets GO!!!!

Yep...Nads Bone....

Let's Go Hokies!!

I'd like to thank Frank, Bud, Coach Fuente, and the rest of our coaches for always being professional in interviews and giving opponents due credit.

The only questioning of penalty calls I remember offhand was regarding GaT chop blocking and that was more about player safety than anything else.

Thanks to Whit and the Search Committee for bringing us a truly classy man to lead our team.

And then Beamer admitted publicly that he was wrong and called PJ to apologize to him. That's how grown-ups should adult.

I'm so glad that someone like Pat Narduzzi does not represent our school

Pat Narduzzi's wife hates him

Tyrod did it Mikey!

Everyone hates him

I had a lot of respect for Narduzzi as a defensive coach, but after his in game antics and post game comments, it's gone for now, maybe forever.

This.

The guy had my respect but after tonight just turned into a complete asshat in my book. Classless coach and appreciate the professialism from the top down on the Hokies side.

I lost some respect for his abilities as a defensive coach due to Pitt making no adjustments all game. It seems like he knows one thing and that's it...like a defensive oriented Mike Leach.

Any idea how Nardouche is being portrayed by non-hokie media? I hope everyone hates him now.

HOKIES

I bet even his dog hates him now. However, he coaches at Pitt, which means he'll probably be coaching somewhere else next year. Good riddance.

He started to remind me way too much of Bo Pelini.

But look how far Nebraska has fallen without him and his attitude. /s

Not sure what you meant by "look how far Nebraska has fallen without him and his attitude". Nebraska is 7-0 this year and ranked #7, although they face a truly challenging game on Saturday against Wisconsin (a 5-2 team, ranked # 11).

Just letting you know, the little /s after his comment means sarcasm. For future reference!

Just because I have a smart phone does not mean I am savy on the nuances on all things tech. My apologies.

The Wisconsin game should be telling cause Nebraska hasn't played anyone yet...

"Give me a fu¢king beer", Anonymous Genius

Like someone already said, it was sarcastic. Nebraska is doing great and I'm sure a huge part is not worrying about the antics of your coach. I'm sure Pitt would similarly benefit from this douche calming down and allowing his players to play and maybe helping out a DB on occasion.

I like Michigan State. I liked and respected Pat Narduzzi. If you want to say the officiating was bad in the post game, I'm ok with that. The officiating was an atrocity. HOWEVER, the fact that he wants to talk about OUR players doing things and not getting caught, without acknowledging how much his team got away with....screw you Pat.

Yeah, up to this point, I thought Nardz was a good guy but passionate and animated.

Towards the end I had to stop defending him to my wife, whom was calling him out as a whining baby.
Incredulous is the word I would use to describe how I found his whining about calls.

Narduzzi was indeed incredulous ("unwilling or unable to believe something"), which I found incredible ("difficult to believe, extraordinary").

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

Did you watch the whole post game conference? Seems like you didn't. He specifically stated that the Panthers also got away with some stuff. This thread has turned into a flame fest of Narduzzi, but I'd say this particular quote is really being taken out of context. He talked for about 5 minutes about what his team did wrong, and what we did right, that caused us to be successful. Then later in the presser he briefly mentioned that.

Logan 3:16

Seems like you didn't. He specifically stated that the Panthers also got away with some stuff.

Yea if that "some stuff" happened off the field it would be illegal in all 50 states AND Canada. Are you trying to say that he is not, in fact, a douchemissle?

I watched the whole press conference. The point still stands: Fuck Pat Narduzzi.

Slye should be in the 25 next week. I know they haven't repeated yet, but how can you not?

definitely grateful he went 6/6 but with a long of 37 he should make all of those.

What if we turned those 6 FG's into 6 TD's... Holy shitballs - we would have put up 63 points.

Seriously, we have to get better at converting redzone opportunities from field goals to touchdowns.

Slye was da bomb. nErduzzi is quoted in a balanced Pittsburgh Gazette or Post (one of those) article as saying we'd have scored 80 points if we had converted those FG's. He knows the score so to speak. We can rag on him next year.

Play ball!

Slye's kick through the uprights on the kickoff was amazing too, though it didn't score any points. Slye also served up his numbersake last night in his 46th touchback of the year out of 58 kickoffs.

Suspect play calling in the red zone. Even 3 of those into td would have put the game away.

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

I'm not going to judge Fu and Corn on playcalling until we consistently see some seriously questionable calls game after game after game. These coaches are in their first year here, with players they inherited and it could very well be that the players blow an assignment and a play that could have resulted in a touchdown goes for no gain. It's my understanding that at least some of the calls in this offense are meant to set up future plays. If they want to run something that looks questionable to the fans but is the right call to the coaches, we should let the playcallers have a long leash till proven otherwise. Afterall, our offensive production this season is miles and miles ahead of where we have been the past five years.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

Agreed. Looked to me that Billy Hite was still calling the red zone plays, especially in the first quarter. We almost scored 21 the hard way (7 FGs)...yikes.

Hey, no ragging on Coach Hite.

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

I hope the coaches learned a bit from that. I get it that you don't want to show your hand too early, but we had the ball in the red zone 3 times early on and not once did we even attempt a pass into the end zone. Seeing as how the rest of the game played out, that was a huge mistake that could have cost us the game.

Don't let this comment take away from the fact that Arkansas blew a 24 point 2nd half lead in the Belk Bowl.
Don't let the Belk Bowl take away from the fact that Matt Ryan blew a 25 point 2nd half lead in the Super Bowl.

Yea, especially on 3rd downs. I'm not entirely sure where the shovel pass call came from, but it was clear that it was not going to fool the defense. Was glad to see Cunningham finally targeted in the 2nd half for the TD though - which is what I thought we would have seen in the 1st quarter with some of those opportunities.

We kicked three field goals of 22 yard or shorter, that's how you lose a big game, and another two field goals that were also pretty short.

You have to capitalize in the redzone.

I have to confess, as soon as Pitt scored to make the score 9-7 I figured we would lose, for exactly this reason. I was glad to see the Tech touchdowns in the second half. But there's a reason no one has ever kicked more than six FG in a game. It's a great mark for Joey Slye, but it tells you something is terribly wrong with your offense.

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

I agree with the premise of your statement and yet, we WON the big game.

Since I'm not on the coaching staff I have the luxury of enjoying the win and not stressing too much about the early sputters in the redzone.

I'm elated that we won a game like this, no doubt. This is more of a "taking the next step" comment. If we take care of business and make the ACCCG and/or in future years plays in big games against great teams, TD's instead of field goals can be the difference in being elite or 10-2 9-3 every year.

Those first few FG's, it was like once we got into the red zone, we were afraid to take a shot into the end zone.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Heinz field is not an easy stadium to kick in. Wind swirls all around in there and the turf is always a mess. Joey was awesome. Go Hokies!

I love sly as much as the next guy, but I think this is the week Ludwig gets it, I don't think a punt went through the end zone all night and he consistently pinned them inside the 10

He said give to me Roscoe

3 punts, 3 inside 20, zero return yards.

And the non-touchback kickoffs didn't make it back to the 25, including one fumble.

___

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Kicking game was awesome last night. In fact it may have really won the game for us. Pitts returner was ranked pretty high and got nothing on the couple of returns he got to make (probably due to the wind). Ludwig helped the field position game (although I think Pitt drove the field a couple of times.)

I suggested Slye for 25 in the game thread but I could also see Ludwig getting too.

Glad you're back

I wanted us to sing tech triumph in their end zone they way that jack ass of a coach was acting tonight. And the refs screwed both sides on pass interference calls all night. Bucky was being held all night. Fam!

There are wolves and there are sheep, I am the sheep dog

Every team has one or two games every year that they put EVERYTHING into to try and win, and ultimately they look their best most of the time (Virginia Tech-Ohio State 2014). Nardouchy and Pitt invested everything into this game. Teams love playing teams like us that used to be really good but have kind have been kind of down recently, because they know they can win, but it will still look good. I'm sure Pitt saw this game as a Thursday nighter at home against Virginia Tech and circled it on the calendar. Then they had the extra week to prepare, saw that we were ranked, and absolutely had to win to stay relevant in the coastal, and they got that much more amped. The result? A Hokie win in the gutsiest of situations. We can complain about the red zone playcalling and throwing the ball with 4-5 minutes left, and rightfully so, but this team flat out got the job done against a team who won't play that well for the rest of the season. Hell of a win.

This football program grew a pair tonight.

Against Tennessee and Syracuse, once things started going south it snowballed, in games which happened to be the first two games in a legit hostile crowd this coaching staff and these young players we have were in. Tonight, PITT punched us in the mouth from the 2nd quarter until midway through the 3rd, and the team picked their assess our the ground and gutted or a brutally though win. This is the kind of win that will set direction for our program for the next 5-10 years, because it's easy to have fun and pull out the win when things go well. Only the great programs pull it off when things are sputtering, and that is exactly what we just did.

I was very concerned when they jumped us like that. I saw a meltdown coming. But they kept getting up and fighting. Motley coming off the bench and playing the most meaningful plays he has played all year and doing EXACTLY what he needed to do summed up this game. This is a TEAM. There will still be growing pains. We're not perfect. But we're 6-2 with wins over UNC, Miami, and Pitt, all in completely different scenarios, and we got the win each time. I'm sure no one thought we would be 6-2 right now.

Marshall University student.
Virginia Tech fanatic.

Agree with everything you said except the last sentence. I bought my seat on the hype train in the preseason and expected us to be where we are with the exception that I thought we would beat Tennessee too. I predicted 10-2 after buying into the preseason chatter about ND and now think 10-2 will still be the outcome. The changes that CJF made to the program while still maintaining the core values that make us VT are just more evident now but were clearly visible since Summer. Welcome aboard.... it's ok to be nervous but just know... this may be recognizable as a team with VT values but it is not the same team as the last 5 years.

Lets GO!!!!

I was SO pissed at the non-calls by the refs. Only to be more pissed at Narduzzi's cry baby, pouty, spoiled brat behavior on the sidelines. Bud Foster had intensity, but went about it like a man. A man dropping a lot of F bombs out of the microphone's reach, but a man none the less

It's OK - I'm half asian

Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if the refs decided to keep the spot on that last first down because Nardouchy was trying to clown then all game and they were finally fed up with his shit.

It was a pretty good spot, and certainly not worth overturning.

But I'm so glad it wasn't overturned, and cost Narduzzi a time out.

You know, even if the spot should have been where the first elbow touched, 99 of 100 times the same spot would be called live and moved on with the game. That could only be seen on replay and would have been a jerk move to overturn it.

This was our first win in a close game and it showed a lot of positives in our team. I was very impressed with the fight. Obviously the whole receiving corps played great down the stretch and Evans was on fire, but Motley proved again what a great team player he is. I love his attitude and wish there was a way he could get more involved.

Loved Motley coming in at a crucial time and playing well. Put some deep balls on the money and even though they weren't caught he was certainly not a liability by any means. True team player. Kid sacked up during crunch time.

hats off to motley. threw 2 very catchable balls that were just dropped.

Anybody see Willie Byrn shout out Motley's team contribution on twitter? Motley carried the weight when he needed to, but he must also be a great teammate. He even rallied the team when Evans came back in the game, and then Evans sought him out at the end of the game to hug him. Tremendous.

Yep, definitely classy.

And he was ready ata moments notice to go in and ball.

Motley is the reason we will have JJ actually be able to use his redshirt. The current attitude by Motley might be paying dividends four years from now.

If you're reading the above post and thinking, "is this guy serious?!?," you can safely assume I'm not.

This can't be emphasized enough. The ESPN sideline reporter pointed out how Evans went up and hugged Motley in his post-game interview on the field. Evans said he was like a big brother to him. That spoke volumes, to me at least.

I also thought it was awesome how stoked Evans was when Motley was out there. He was fired up when they came to the sideline

Motley had that GREAT throw to Bucky that wasn't pulled in. Would've been a TD for sure. An excellent throw coming cold off the bench!

Yeah we did a great job of pushing db's off of our back after carrying them 15 yards and making absolutely incredible receptions. Narduzzi go fist yourself with a goalpost. No respectable coach says shit like that, especially given how the game was called tonight.

Unsurprisingly, there have been a few times where recruits tell media folks that there is a lot of negative recruiting against PSU referencing the scandal. A very brief investigation by media folks discovered that Narduzzi is the most negative recruiter in the region.

He seems to just be an overall terrible person.

Definitely hoping the best for the Pitt CB Motley that went out with what looked like a knee injury. I haven't seen any info yet but their trainer staff was obviously treating it seriously.

Best of luck, kid.

Based on how they put a towel over his lower leg, I was surmising a fracture.

I dunno... they had a bag of ice taped on his knee. I don't think they would ice his knee with a fracture lower.

Found the video of the post-game presser and trimmed out the clip of him talking about our passing game...what an asshole.

[Mod Edit: Removed Sendvid embed because it broke mobile display. Full presser is here, push off comments at 4:57: https://youtu.be/uKvViRPAKoY?t=4m57s.]

I give him credit for leaving his corners in one-on-one situations where they were getting beat, and for being a dick.

He reminds me of my high school baseball coach. I want to punch him in the mouth.

I hate your high school baseball coach!

And I give his CB's credit for grabbing jerseys, arms, and everything they could get ahold of while pulling our receivers to the ground on nearly every play. You know, in some places what they were doing to our receivers would be considered assault.

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

I like how Nardouche was doubting the offsides call at the beginning of the presser. Your player was lined up the neutral zone. Deal with it ya big baby.

Beating Pitt and their whiney coach is fantastic. But we haven't won the coastal yet. Keep up the intensity and stick it to dooook!

Stick it in! Stick it in!

Side note: Duke is the only in division team left who beat us last year that we have not beaten this year (yet). I love Fuente's style of football and pure class. Loved the contrast of watching him calmly laying out for our players what they would do next on the sidelines while Narduzzi was busy pissing the referees off with his tirades.

Joe, we're going to need you to take a few more weeks off...

he's young who knows if it will even be bothering him then. that's why we have a s&c/training staff to make those determinations on what's best for the player.

what would be most helpful for jerod would be for our OL to man up and actually get a rushing game going that didn't involve jerod.

Seeing how it hurt Evans to take his shoe off after the game makes me think that this would be a good idea. `

I'm hoping the extra two days of rest will be enough but its great to have a competent backup QB.

I was thinking the same thing. We need him 100 percent for the championship game. Not that I'm thinking ahead... :-)

anyone else tired of the over analytical replays on every other play?

Where is Lawson?!

NO. We've had too many games this year where they don't show ANY replays. I like getting the additional looks. Too much happens too quickly at game speed for me to pick it all up on the first try. It's frustrating to have TD's called back because of a penalty on the line and then not get to see said penalty.

Yes. From an entertainment experience, it can be overkill. From a fan perspective, I ABSOLUTELY want them to look at every angle and get it right. #ItWasACatch

Those blowout wins against BC and ECU are paying dividends folks because tonight Motley came in and made some crucial plays thanks to the playing time he got in each of those games.

Also, fuck you Narduzzi; our WRs had to push off a little because your DBs were grabbing a fistful of their jerseys and not letting go. I can remember at least four PI calls that should have been called. It got so bad even the ESPN announcers were talking about it all night through the game.

Go Hokies!

There was one PI that was actually called on Pitt where he was pulling so hard on Fords jersey that his feet only got 6" off the ground when he jumped. TheDouche ran out on the field crying. It was ridiculous.

I'll jump on the Pat Narduzzi hating. His pre-game speech was the worst speech I've seen in a while. It was just him yelling general instructions at his players. Someone needs to find a picture of it, there's a kid sitting in the front just staring into space with a "coach is yelling again...why the hell did I come to Pitt??" look on his face. I'm glad they showed it, between that and his actions during and after the game, any recruit with sense has to be thinking twice about playing for him.

Awesome win for the Hokies. Don't let up!

They showed that video twice, and I found myself feeling sorry for the team. There is simply no reason for one to deliver a speech like that. The only effect that would have on me is causing uncontrollable laughter.
Seriously, if someone yells like that in front of me, I will laugh. And probably call them a:

Nah I would never call Nardouchy a dumbass to his face... Mainly because I think he's crazy enough to immediately snap and start swinging

He wouldn't punch. He would just grab you. Over and over again.

And then whine about how you're pushing off of him.

it was awful, doubly so after the halftime break encore. someone is a little tone deaf to their surroundings, definitely not having the intended effect.

Why oh why did I come to Pit

Have we ever had a game with three 100 yard receivers before yesterday?

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Nope, it was the first time. I think it was our 3rd ever game with a qb over 400 as well.

Danny is always open
23 can't read

Per the recap on ESPN, Slye set a record and our passing game did, too:

Slye:

Joey Slye tied the school and Atlantic Coach Conference records by making six field goals to help the Hokies (6-2, 4-1) beat the Panthers (5-3, 2-2) on the road for the first time in 17 years.

Passing game:

three Tech wide receivers topped 100 yards in the same game for the first time in school history. Isaiah Ford's 10 receptions included his school-record 23rd receiving touchdown. Bucky Hodges caught six passes for 145 yards and a score and Cam Phillips added 109 yards on a night

And yet the previous coaching regime would have doubled down on the running game the second half directly because we couldn't get anything going in the first...

Agreed and I would have been turning the TV off after Pitt took the lead. I have seen enough games where the D can't do everything and eventually wears down and the offense just continues to wet the bed for the rest of the game leading to a blowout loss. But this year, we answered with FG, FG, Touchdown before Pitt could answer back. Thank God we have an offensive staff in town!!

I will admit, to my detriment, that I turned the game off in the third. I think I haven't yet adjusted myself to our new team and coaching staff. I was watching something else on TV and seething when my saint of a wife suggested that I might want to turn the game back on. Thanks to her I got to see the Hokies gut out an amazing win. I will not bail on this team again, I now have faith that we won't always fold under the spotlight. We won't win them all, but we will fight to win every game.

I did this too, right after Evans got hurt. I went to bed and put the phone in airplane mode so that no one could text me. My blood pressure was through the roof. I didn't give up the team, just had to escape the fury I was self-generating over the non-PI calls. I don't regret it at all, but now I gotta go back and watch the Motley drive at the end of the game.

I'm sure this strategy made your Friday morning even better knowing that they pulled it out. I get myself worked up too much over games as well. My wife was putting the kids to bed for the third straight night (two World Series games, go Cubs, and now this game) and she yelled down "Three straight nights putting the kids down". My son goes, "Mom, is that three straight nights of dad yelling at the TV?". Talk about the ultimate gut check. I'm not cussing or anything, but it definitely made me keep things a little more in perspective and I had a chat with my son before he fell asleep to let him know my behavior wasn't appropriate.

Ha! Little bitta moxie on that kid of yours.

Actually, I woke up at 3 am angry. Checked the score, saw we won, went back to sleep. Woke up at 6 am angry.

At this point, just trying to get to the weekend.

If I could up vote this 1000 times, I would.

I get really worked up about games myself, but years from now VT's record will not matter as much as man you train your son to be.

Phillips was really important to this game.

Seriously, having someone as good as Cam Phillips as your third receiver puts a lot of defenses in an awkward position. You have two good corners to match up on two good receivers ...

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

And when Bucky graduates we've got a guy his size waiting in the wings.

Tim Settle?

If you're reading the above post and thinking, "is this guy serious?!?," you can safely assume I'm not.

According to Jessie Palmer he's not 6'-7"

I agree. As important as hid receiving skills are, the one yard run for a first down at the end was critical. He dodged a tackler behind the line of scrimmage and dove to make the needed yardage. Without that who knows how the game would have turned out. A great win, marked by stellar performances from Evans, Hodges, Ford, Phillips, Slye, and Ludwig. Others could probably be added to that list.

Phillips really showed some versatility as far as receiving then showing
some moves and power on the sweeps. Like you said, that last first down
was pretty important and he had to fight for it.

I could not see the game on TV because my son had an away 8th grade game. He starts at center and his team pulled out a great 20-6 road win. I did, however, listen to the fourth quarter on my Hokie ap driving home. The first thing I heard was Mike and Laaser talking about how much Narduzzi was whining about the refs. Motley is the Man for coming in and doing his job. I was concerned when Pitt tied up the game....too much Conner. Concern was replaced with elation when we quickly took a ten point lead and possession of the ball in Pitt territory. I was thinking "one more first down and we can at least get another Joey FG." Sadly, it did not happen that way. At one point, Jon and Mike talked about obvious (but not called) PI committed against Bucky. "If that is not pass interference, nothing is." I am so glad we have a classy and extremely competent coach. In summary, it was a great win against a tough team in a hostile environment. Now, Hokies, lets run the table. I live in Texas but will be in Blacksburg to see us CRUSH the Hoos.

I want to know who has the crystal ball for calling the next #25. Every week it seems like the guy who gets the number does at least one awesome thing that they don't normally do. Deablo with the forced fumble...I say give iit to slye next and see if he can hit another 75 yard field goal.

The proud "V" in Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University spelled out in chest paint.
North Endzone @ 03 Miami.

see if he can hit another 75 yard field goal

No, that was the Duke game last year.

It seemed like Chuck Clark tackled Henderson every time he tried to return a KO. I know Slye hit 6 FG's, but Clark was important making sure Henderson didn't make a game changing play on a KO.

Can someone make a compilation video of the Pitt DBs draped over our receivers and tweet it at nard dog?

Tweet it at the ACC. Their head of officiating needs to come down on that crew. Atrocious.

The guys need to get the clue that when you see the jersey getting yanked or when you see the WR jerk in a direction he's not traveling ( I'm looking at a pass to Hodges near the end zone here), it's probably PI call.

Now, the call against Stroman, the refs forgot that when a defender is looking at the ball, he has as much a right to it as the receiver.

That call came from the line judge, not the ref right at the play.

That is what made the angriest with that Stroman PI call. How can the guy who is a couple yards away say it's clean, but another ref 20 yards away with no clear line of site call a flag 4 seconds after the play occurred? There were so many horrendous no calls both ways, but how can you actually make a call that late and from so far away? Atrocious.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

This one took a level of self control I wasn't aware that I had to avoid chucking all remotes/controllers within arms reach of me

I yelled multiple profanities about how late that flag was (it came from off screen the guy was so far away)

You, and my wife, were channeling the same reactions.

The Stroman call was correct, if not a little slow. The back judge or umpire didn't see Stroman grab the receiver's arm. The side judge who threw the flag did.

Granted, based on how the game was called up to that point, it was questionable, but it was PI.

We need to make our jersey's out of tissue paper or something. That way when the defender has a handful of Isaiah's jersey, you can't really argue it...

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Watching the play, it was nice and clean. Then 3 seconds later this flag comes
in from nowhere.

Any thoughts on how this game and Narduzzi's behavior impacts Garbutts recruitment? After seeing Narduzzi's meltdown last night there is no way I would want to play for a clown like that. You can behaving like a maniac as a D Coordinator but as a Head Coach you gotta be more level headed than that.

Great question - jokes aside, do we have some LEGIT insiders here that can help shine some light?

I'm legitimately inside right now and it will not favor their recruitment.

I can't tell if you're serious or not...

Muschamp is recruiting great at SCAR despite losing his head constantly and having temper tantrums at his players. Never be surprised when kids don't see what adults see. I think we get him anyway tho.

Anyone else blown away by Yosh's HUGE HUGE downfield blocking late in the game? That was a big time oline play.

Ford was smart and well timed on that, waited for Nijman to get just enough up field to throw a big block and eat enough space to gobble up another defender. Great execution.

Absolutely. Great patience

I was laughing during the play because Ford was basically jogging behind Yosh.

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

*2 big blocks. I think he took out at least 3 defenders by himself. He's a dude.

I watched a replay play recently and noticed that Yosh ended up pancaking the dude he was blocking way downfield. Teller was nearby too and gave him an approving high five after the play.

FWIW, I've seen a fair amount of Pitt fans round the interwebz unhappy with Narduzzi's antics as well, even if they agree with him that the game was poorly officiated.

I agree that the game was poorly officiated....it was...both ways. Pitt corners were grabbing handfuls of jersey and our WRs had to do everything they could to combat that and in some cases, yes, that included pushing off. I don't think I can say that our WRs didn't get away with pushing off...because they did...but Pitt fans need to also realize that their DBs got away with early and aggressive contact. The infuriating part is when they called it inconsistently. Pitt did draw more penalty flags than VT but there could have been an awful lot more...

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

Agreed. And it seems like most of them understand that too.

From what I've experienced interacting with Pitt fans on message boards, they're a pretty knowledgeable bunch and overall, a pretty classy group.

Not today, all I've seen is Shitt fans complaining about the refs and how the Hokies should wear stripes etc etc etc

Excuses are kind of like assholes, everyone's got one and they all stink, BUT excuses don't coach for Pitt

edit: I guess that last part is debatable after his post game presser

Well, maybe on Twitter then.

But on Pitt sites like Cardiac Hill and Pitt Blather, as well as the ACC message board on Collegiate Sports Nation, Pitt fans on the whole have been civil.

I just find it really annoying. overall I like Pitt (which sounds really gross as I grew up a Ravens fan). Their offense was probably the strongest we've seen all season. That O-line was pushing us to their whim and James Connor just could not be brought down. Same with their D-line giving us nothing in the run game. I'm glad we actually took advantage of what we could.

Having said that, Narduzzi just left a bad taste in my mouth. He alone made me not want to like them at all.

That's what it's all about

I think Evans must have found Michael Brewer's stash of special stuff. Never seen a guy writhe in agony and do what he did 10 minutes later.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

You must be too young to remember '99, then. MV1 would come up gimpy after a hit, we'd all hold our breath and think the worst, and then two plays later he'd rip off another amazing run.

Yo, Narduzzi:

Go Hokies!

One negative from the game was Cam Phillips was our leading rusher with 43 yards. But a great team win

Hoo Boo

Not really a negative. Pitt has a monster run D. They compounded that by throwing 8 into the box. VT said ok thats fine, we'll just burn your corners all night. And we did. Thats what Pitt wanted for some reason.

Agreed. VT took what was given.

I did like how, after we established the passes to the sideline, we kept them honest by getting ~8 yd runs up the middle.

No - No i am quite confident that is not us. I think that is the rival's moniker for Penn State nowadays.

Yep. For what it's worth, I'm having a great time today with the PSU fans that also hate Narduzzi. I haven't looked at it, but my coworker claims that bluewhiteillustrated is having a field day with Narduzzi's behavior. They hate him more than they hate Harbaugh, Meyer, or Dantonio.

Who hates Dantonio? I am not sure I have ever heard a bad thing about him.

Just that he beats them - not a problem with the personality or character

Can anybody link to a video of the play where Jerod threw the int that was overturned because of offsides? In the infamous Narduzzi press conference he claimed it was a bogus call and I'd like to see it again.

Honestly, who cares... The refs were shit to both VT and Pitt yesterday, and we could spend the entire offseason trying to identify all the various things they got wrong last night.

I care because either the officials called a phantom offside penalty (which is worse than inconsistency in calling PI) or Narduzzi is just blatantly lying.

The way Nardouchy was acting last night, I don't blame the refs at all if they did throw an iffy flag on the offsides to fuck him over. He was a shithead to the officiating crew last night, and should have been flagged on numerous occasions for his antics. If that manifested itself into a phantom offside and a favorable spot of the ball on our last drive that they didn't seriously consider adjusting on replay, I'm ok with it, because he earned it.

Yeah, I don't need confirmation that he was lying about taht one thing to know that he's a jackwagon

On replay, it was clear that their defender was definitely offsides, and it wasn't close. Sucks for them that it was away from the play and negated a critical turnover, but it was absolutely a legitimate call.

I don't have video but I remember seeing their slot CB standing on the black line of scrimmage line that gets shown on TV. I was watching to see the line judge throw a flag, but didn't see it immediately and I was thinking they let him get away with it. I'm glad he didn't.

yeah Palmer (the ESPN announcer) said at the time that the DB on the other side of the field away from the play side and out of the screen was lined up offsides. of course you get a pic and see a flag and your pissed about it.... most people get pissed anytime they make a big play and see a yellow hankie and call it phantom weather warranted or not.

#Bapn ain't EZ

Wanna win put boobie in! Let boobie spin coach!

I don't have a video, but saw it at the time. As a former referee, I will say he was definitely offsides. Actually, when the play started, I remember thinking, "no one ever calls that." Much to my, very pleasant, surprise, they did.

Two feet clearly on the line to play. Bogus my ass

Thanks for tracking down this picture. I remember the announcers talking about it but with all do respect to Palmer I think half of what he says he is just making up and I didn't see it live so I thought Palmer might have just been blowing smoke, especially since they didn't go back and show it.

In the end I didn't need to see this to know that Narduzzi is an idiot but it is nice to know that the refs got this one right and not that something was handed to us because Narduzzi was acting like a fool all game.

Thanks for posting, I looked and couldn't find it. You can argue that it's a ticky-tack call, or that it didn't affect the play, but there's no denying that he is lined up offsides.

"Those who jump into the void owe no explanation to those who stand and watch."

Look at where the refs are positioned and then look where he's lined up. There's nothing ticky-tack about it, he forced them to make that call. Stupid brainless penalty at a bad time in the game, but that's what happens when you're coach is a hothead and instead of trying to calm the defense down, he's making them worried about 15 things on a given play.

Don't let the Belk Bowl take away from the fact that Matt Ryan blew a 25 point 2nd half lead in the Super Bowl.

I think the "ticky-tack" feeling comes from knowing the player being off-sides did not affect the outcome of the play. But the official has to throw the flag as soon as the play starts, and he has no way of knowing what effect it will have.

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

I wonder if Evans saw this and knew he had a free play.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

I have not seen it online yet but it was obvious from before the snap the CB covering our slot WR was lined up over the black line for a long time.

The VTBulldozer video has the offsides. One of their guys lined up in the neutral zone.

I don't know how Narduzzi didn't at least get a sideline penalty. If I were officiating the game he would have been kicked off the sidelines by the end of the 3rd with the ridiculousness he was pulling.

I've flagged less before. I called out the field judge for letting Narduzzi get in his head during the game (it was obvious he was second-guessing some of his calls), but props to him for dealing with that the whole 2nd half when it was arguably worse than what the side judge had to deal with in the 1st.

Not even a sideline warning. Shameful.

Pitt's O-line is beast tho...I doubt we have a night like that the rest of the season

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

Give some credit to Pitt's O-line. That bunch is by far the best we've seen all year or will see. Not to mention our Linebackers were trying to tackle James Conner. Gang tackle him or he isn't going down. He's a yards-after-contact machine.

Narduzzi shouldn't be complaining about the officiating. He should be thankful he didn't get multiple unsportsmanlike conduct penalties for his sideline antics.

The attendance of LolUVA spring games and my GPA correlate closely.

I was at the game and after every play the Pitt fans would whine and boo and say the game was rigged, at the end of the first half after a Joey Slye extra point a Pitt fan behind me yelled "They arent eve hiding it any more!" I think they are so used to getting all the calls as Steelers fans that they are surprised and expect bad calls to go thier way as Pitt fans.

Yeah, the whole stadium definitely felt that the refs were against them. I saw it as pretty poor both ways.

My Mama says that alligators are ornery because they got all them teeth and no toothbrush

I agree with the sentiment, but more importantly, with your screen name

On the officiating, I saw #11 hanging on Hodges a few different times.
They shoulda been more consistent with the officiating. That can really
affect the outcome of a game. The call on Stroman in the endzone was bogus.

OTOH, happy to get a win and see the team fight back like that. Big credit
to Motley for being such a team player and being ready when called.

We must have been watching different games. I didn't see any jersey pulling on Hodges.

Give it a rest, Pat. You have another game to prep for.

what? hold? no way, man

obvious pushing off, face mask and targeting by #7, who should have been ejected.

Hahaha y'all are a trip.

I actually thought the call on Stroman in the endzone was right he had the dudes left elbow pinned against his body. It would have been nice if they called it both ways though, Pitt would have had about a dozen PIs.

I think the frustration was more based around the back judge, 4 feet from the play, not throwing a flag only to watch a flag come from literally off screen 15-20 yards away from the play about 4-5 seconds after the play was over.

Yea the call was definitely late and it didn't look like a penalty to me live but after watching the replay it seemed obvious to me.

The problem I had with the call is that the refs had let about 4 or 5 more egregious calls on Pitt go the previous offensive series for us, forcing our drive to stall out with a punt, and then they called that shit, essentially gift wrapping them a TD.

The inconsistency was maddening

I agree. I used to find him really annoying and somehow I always got irritated listening to him call games. But the last year I'd say he's been much better. I still make fun of his skinny ties but I don't mind him at all...not like I used to

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

What, you don't like hearing '3rd and California'?

My favorite of his was earlier this year during Louisville/Cincy when he said hindsight was 50/50...obviously he mis-spoke but it still leads to some quality comedy as a result. I guess hindsight to him is a coin flip, etc, etc.

He has improved quite a bit. I didn't notice him say "run-pass option" once in our 2 games. In past years he has mentioned it about every 3 1/2 minutes.

The irritating word yesterday was "explosive".

I was getting mad at the wife getting pissed at hearing it so often.

Awwww, does Nardie need a tissue?

The Hokie offense has rolled up more than 500 yards against Miami and over 550 yards against Pitt. Do any of you out in KeyPlay nation know how many times a Stinespring offense eclipsed those numbers?

With or without 3OT?

Never

The last time VT put up back to back 500 yard games was in 1999 and 2000 between the National Championship Game and the opener against Akron

In '99 we actually had 3 straight from Temple (511 yds), BC (555 yds), and the National Title game (503 yds). And then Akron was 549 yards. We got very close in 2005 with 497 yds vs Maryland and 492 vs BC in back to back games. So it pretty much required a Vick to do it before now.

Since Stiney was named OC in 2002, looks like he NEVER eclipsed what Fuente/Corn have done in their first season. Oh, how I love our new coaches.

I completely agree. I kept digging further and further back looking at our game totals and figured I'd take a look at the MV7 years to get an idea. In the past it took an amazing QB talent to put up those yards. Now, it takes a solid QB and very good offensive minds calling the plays.

edit: Drinking

Fuhhhhhhh. I'm ashamed of my TKPing abilities. I humbly accept the drink, please accept my sincerest apologies, Horse. I do not mean to offend

If field goals had been touchdowns, the score would have been 63 - 36...think about that!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

the spread was 3.5...interesting, huh? I bet those who bet the chalk wished we only substituted one of those FG for a TD

So my WVU fan brother-in-law texted me in the 4th quarter that our red zone offense was going to cost him money. I told him it made me laugh that he was going to lose money. We got the win AND cost him money, it was a good night.

"We judge ourselves by our intentions and others by their behavior" Stephen M.R. Covey

“When life knocks you down plan to land on your back, because if you can look up, you can get up, if you fall flat on your face it can kill your spirit” David Wilson

So my dad (a Clemson grad and fan) just called me and said, "Two questions. First off what did you think of all the PI's Pitt was getting away with and second off what did you think of their moron coach?" So basically it's obvious to an unbiased 3rd party too. We both agreed that we hope Clemson will destroy them/run the score through the roof.

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

I noticed something in this game that I hadn't noticed before. Fuente's offense was noticeably more conservative in the first half of this game then the second. First half, they were trying to make the run game work up the middle, and it looked deliberately reserved. It was known going into the game that Pitt was going to focus on stopping the run, so why play deliberately to their strength, and be so reserved. We didn't see the offense loosen up in the pass game until after the Pitt scores in late second quarter.

I wonder if this is something unique to this game? What was Fuente's motive? Is his game plan typically more reserved in the first half, and I am just late noticing it? Was it not to expose to much of the offensive plan early, to limit adjustments during half-time? Is the run in the first half of games to develop habits on the defensive side of the ball to exploit later? That didn't seem to happen this game, if it is. How does the reservedness in this game compare to others?

What does everyone else think?

Maybe Fuente heard from the booth that the reporters had asked Nard about his defense and heard about his refusal to change.

You know, I think there is some truth to this. I think Fuente has a first half game plan, which he'll run to establish a pattern in the game. We'll play our game in the first half, show the opponent what Fuente wants to show them, and then force them adjust to our first-half strategy. When the second half starts, we make our adjustments and take them by surprise, not showing our true hand until the fourth quarter.

I'll focus on your question about Fuente's motive - I think he's smart enough to lull the opponent into a false sense of security and then spring a winning strategy when the time becomes critical. I do think that his first-half game plan is reserved because he wants to tease out the strategy that the opponent is using, in this case, the opponent wanted to grab jerseys and b!tch like a d@mn child.

I think you're on to something there, HVille.

I think part of it was setting up some of the play action that worked in the second half and part of it was trying to be a little balanced. When it was clear in the second half that the run game was not going to yield much, they focused more on the passing game.

I think it was that the wind was blowing crazy. Slye usually puts the ball out of the endzone and his kickoffs were being caught around the 10. You could hear the wind blowing in the ref's mic and could see their pants whipping in the wind. I'm pretty sure the wind died down around half time which made the pass a more viable option.

Credit where credits due. This Pitt team is beastly. Nardouchey doesn't do them any favors by refusing to switch up his defense. Their offense shredded us though.

And might seem crazy but I could totally see Pitt beating Clemson. Clemson won't be up for Pitt and you just can't sleep on this team.

Clemson will do what we did - torch their secondary and convert those possessions we settled for FGs; they'll see what we did and learn from that.

Yes Pitt will still run on Clemson, but Clemson D > Pitt D, so they'll win by ~21

i called that one. :-)

And yes I bet on the game.

I think there is a lot of truth to the idea that Pitt, under this coach, has a major attitude and could probably be just as brutal to anyone on the line of scrimmage. They're just a dirty, nasty bunch of dudes and won't take any nonsense from anyone.

Having said that, I think other teams with longer-established offensive systems and bigger and equally nasty guys on the DL would be able to handle them over 60 minutes (Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, and the like). But I don't think Pitt is an easy out for anyone.

On the flip side it seems like the only way to beat them is to attack their corners and maybe they'll figure something out before then. Maybe Narduzzi switches to zone or T2, who knows. Regardless, they have some really talented people on that squad and I think they're going to take it to Clemson. Maybe not win, but they'll open some eyes.

That said, I'm mostly scared about the direction the program is heading. If they had our corners they might be undefeated right now. Seems like they just need a few recruits and they're going to be VERY dangerous.

Yeah, but that game did not help their recruiting at all. Bad play by the secondary, no help, players getting bitched out by coach, coaching whining to officials and throwing temper tantrums? Heck even their pregame was him yelling at the players.

I think without the Coach's antics on the sideline/interviews, his game plan wouldn't have hurt so much. "This is what we want to do, it works if we have the players, and that's why we need you. With this offense and your help on defense, we're winning championships."

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Maybe Narduzzi switches to zone or T2, who knows.

LOL, that's a good one! Narduzzi switch? Ha!

If the ACC refs are looking for Pass Interference in Pitt's secondary, I don't think Clemson will have any problem with them.

According to my fit bit my average heart rate during the game was ~100 bpm. Scientific evidence that my life will be shortened by the hokies.... totally worth it.
