Justin Fuente, Bud Foster, and Pat Narduzzi Discuss Virginia Tech's 39-36 Win Over Pitt

Coaches answer questions from the media during the post-game press conference.

Virginia Tech became bowl eligible for the 24th straight season, ended a two-game skid against Pitt, the Hokies won for the first time ever at Heinz Field (1-4), and remain in atop the ACC Coastal Division standings. At the post-game presser, Bud Foster channeled Ric Flair and summarized Tech's 39-36 victory over the Panthers perfectly.

I refuse to even watch Narduzzi's video.

Me too. I assume he was just screaming the enire time.

basically it was "didn't make enough plays, didn't make enough plays, they made plays, congrats on their WR's for getting away with pushing off, didn't make enough plays"

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

All I kept thinking as I watched it was "Your D held 4 separate drives to field goals inside the 20. That saved you 16 points and they didn't make enough plays?"

Outspoken team cake advocate. Hates terrapins. Resident Macho Man Gif Poster. Distant cousin to Dork Magic. Frequently misspells words.

To be fair, I think I can be said his DBs were put in positions to make plays they didn't make. He's an old school guy, so putting up 36 points means the offense did enough to win the game.

He's still a dick for the pushing off comment though.

Is there a link to that video? I missed it and I wanna see what he was saying.

to specify, the pushing off comment, cuz the video embedded never mentions that.

...It's in the article you're commenting on.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

I thought there was some sort of halftime interview where he was throwing a fit/blaming refs

I was at my bday dinner last night so we had no audio and I was schmammered

I do recall seeing him going semi-quasi Super Saiyan at some point on the sideline, kicking the ground like an MLB manager at home plate, I just didn't see him combust into flames.

I didn't catch the halftime rant, but I'm sure Hokietapes will have it up some time today. You could probably find it on the WatchESPN replay as well.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

At halftime he said something like "they've gotta call it both ways" which just about caused me to combust into flames

On the way to the locker room he said something to the effect of, "well we need to make plays, and the officiating has to call it both ways". Which was especially astounding considering they just scored thanks to a PI called against us that was no worse than the myriad non-calls that Pitt got.

He says it at the 5:00 mark in the embedded video.

Wait, what?

He also threw his corners under the bus for "not making plays".

He sort of validated Fuente's "run first" strategy, by saying he couldn't not cover the run, leaving his corners on an island. I didn't like the strategy, but they were inside each other's heads.

Their DB's were over matched greatly with Bucky and Ford. I agree Bucky and Ford got away with some push offs but they were also grabbing our jerseys all night and got no calls.

The only thing that was consistent with the refereeing was that it was inconsistent.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

Did you know Bucky is 6'7"? I didn't until Jesse Palmer told me about 100 times the past two weeks.

I'll take the over on that

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

From my perspective, they weren't push-offs so much as they were, "DUDE! GET YOUR HANDS OFF ME!"

Leonard. Duh.

I watched it just to compare him to Fuente and Foster and appreciate what we have. It only took him 25 seconds to start blaming the refs. He probably said "you know" 50 times in 6 minutes. I'm not exaggerating. And he speaks to the media like every question they ask is a dumb question. What a dick.

I watched it. Gotta admit, he actually doesn't come off as too much of a dick. He just isn't as poslished and in full control of his emotions, but he will get there.

But still, Fuck You Narduzzi.

Go Hokies!

Oh no... That guy's a dick.

Whiny, loud, 0% self awareness = dick everytime.

Great victory for the team. Next up Duke. We need to go 1 - 0 again.

I'll be watching their game against Georgia Tech, and Miami's game against Notre Dame this weekend for sure.

I haven't seen too much of ND's defense since they fired their DC and I'm curious to see how they're shaping up.

The butt hurt is strong with Narduzzi.

Haters gonna hate, potatoes gonna potate, and hetzers gonna hetz

Yea, I wish he weren't so annoying.

Normally, I should enjoy hearing his lamentations, but it's not so fun with him. Did he really just throw his own player under the bus for not getting an interception? And his corners under the bus for "not making plays"?

You just keep thinking, "What an ass", as he blames the refs and his own defensive players. He rails on the calls against his team, without even realizing that he got some big breaks on non-calls.

Holy shit if you drank every time Narduzzi said "you know" you would be dead twice.

After the stress of watching that game?

Our DBs have been doing the same thing for years as well. First noticed it with Jayron Hosley. But they all say "you know" what seems like every other word.

All I was thinking when Motley came into run the ball late was that we just ECU'd Pitt. QB could run the ball... QB was going to run the ball... they couldn't stop it.

If you're reading the above post and thinking, "is this guy serious?!?," you can safely assume I'm not.

The revenge of the Larry Fitzgerald game!

That game was incredible. He ragdolled DeAngelo Hall, which was not easy to do. He looked like a pro bowl NFL receiver playing against college players. Probably the second best opposing player I have ever seen live at Lane.

He looked like.....Antonio Bryant!!!!!

They had a crazy run of great receivers. Latef Grim was another one, if I recall correctly.

what a sad sack cry baby!

I old love to see Bud and Narduzzi in a dance off, they really both pretty excitable dudes

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

They would dance to the same song, but Nard would complain about how unfair his song selection was

His sideline demeanor is ridiculously cool as well. I swear every shot of him is him just standing there collected. You might be able to sense some glowering underneath but man is that guy stoic. All business and it's awesome.

As a side note I feel sorry for any players that screw up because it would really suck fessing up to this guy.

So, with this in mind, how big of a dog house is Travon in about run blocking if Coach Fu had to break away from calm, cool, collected and pick up the whiteboard in mid game to diagram where he wanted the block to be? Even E$PN side line repeat the obvious reporters commented that they'd never seen him do that before.

Run to Win. Pass To Score

It seemed to me like he didn't get in the game much after that. Fuente was not pleased. Yanked Cam out of playing time earlier in the year for the same thing.

"...When we step on that field, they bleed like we bleed and we're gonna show the world."
-Corey Marshall

Sure as hell better than this.

And then throwing the player under the bus to the media.

Yeah, I'm pretty happy we have Justin instead of this guy.

"Tajh Boyd over the middle . . . and it's caught for an interception! Michael Cole, lying flat on his back, ARE YOU KIDDING???"

I thought it was great to see coach sit on the bench and talk to Travon. He used it as a teaching moment. Think back to the last play where Cam ran for the first down. I'm pretty sure Travon blocked his guy past the 1st down line to help seal the game. It seemed like just the right amount of coaching. I've noticed a lot of little things that have made a huge difference in the play and outcome.

Buzz does this all the time. He will pull players aside during games and teach right there on the sideline, leaving one of his assistants to coach on the floor for a few minutes while he gets his point across. I can dig it. And yes, Buzz is as animated as you can get on the sidelines but I've never seen him stoop to Narduzzi's level of classless bitching.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

I'd usually categorize Buzz's antics as "barely contained excitement/enthusiasm" and "literally jumping for joy". Even his most severe doesn't come close to Seth's ol' pissed off bulldog look.

Reminds me of Tom Landry of the Cowboys. Without the fedora and coat.

He's the best at being humble, and he knows it too.

Who had you rather have as a coach? Someone who is a class act and complements the other team for their excellence, or someone who comes off as a bitchy little girl, looking to blame anyone else for their own inadequacies?

We at VT have the right coaching staff. I'm loving these guys. Plus, I'm happy about the win!

Please, please, please do not insult little girls by comparing them to Pat Narduzzi.

"I mean, you know, fuck them, but good for them." -Too Druck to Funk

Keep on keepin' on Hokies. I liked last night, let's do it 6-7 more times!

That's what it's all about

Yes to 6. I really just don't see 7 happening. I guess we can still hold out hope though.

"Takes one to know one!"

There is also "Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is considered wise; when he closes his lips, is counted prudent." Proverbs 17:28

How 'bout Bud's reference to The Key Play? Nice. I love that man! Also, Bud taking blame for the Tampa 2 coverage that led to their TD at the end of the 1st half, and the fact that he told his players he made the wrong call. Stark contrast to Nard who just tells his DB's all night to cover better and make a play. Palmer was saying it all night, "you cannot expect a 6' tall or under DB to cover the giant that is Bucky Hodges."

"It's time to go play Virginia Tech Football longer and harder than anybody else in America!!" -- Justin Fuente
"I put a brick in Sacksburg today." -- Cam Phillips

I didnt catch the TKP reference. What point was it in there? Just watched it again and didnt notice.

Maybe all of the bourbon from last night has lead to a case of the next day stupids.....

Towards the beginning, he simply uses the phrase "the key plays" to describe the game.

"It's time to go play Virginia Tech Football longer and harder than anybody else in America!!" -- Justin Fuente
"I put a brick in Sacksburg today." -- Cam Phillips

That counts. We count those.

You can see how relieved Bud is to have an offense around haha.

Fam, for those who didn't watch all three coaches interviews, good lord we made a terrific hire and good lord am I glad we kept Bud. Narduzzi is a joke and I'm embarrassed for Pitt fans and alumni. He also needs some practice in front of a microphone "I mean, ya know."

From the NCAA rule book:

Tackling or grasping a receiver or any other intentional contact before he touches the pass is evidence that the tackler is disregarding the ball and is therefore illegal.

How many times was this not called?

Well Evans threw the ball 40 times and Motley 3, so math would say 43 - number of Pitt PI calls = Number of times the refs missed PI .

You're Your math proofs correct.

Let's Go

You can subtract at least 1 more because there wasn't anybody with 10 feet of Chris Cunningham when he caught his TD.

The proud "V" in Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University spelled out in chest paint.
North Endzone @ 03 Miami.

I bet a linebacker grabbed him as he got off the los.
No sense in not going for 100%.

Well, they called it at least once. Remember when Narduzzi broke his headset?

Take the number of pass attempts that VT had last night, subtract one, and there's the answer. I'm pretty sure that there was at least one play where they didn't hold or interfere. Mind you I didn't see one, but I'm sure it had to have happened once.

"Those who jump into the void owe no explanation to those who stand and watch."

Narduzzi should maybe change the way his DB's are taught to grab the WR's and then they wouldn't have been called for the PI's. Listening to him made my ears bleed.

1-0 every week

Bud sounds so enthusiastic when he mentioned having an offense. Much respect to admitting he made the wrong call on defense. Rare to hear any coach say that.

Narduzzi would have thrown his players under the bus for being out of position.

Brian Kelly. You're thinking of Brian Kelly

VT 2016

Narduzzi would tell the players that it was their fault and tell the media that it was the refs fault. Kelly would just point fingers at everyone until the media pick someone besides Kelly.

Now that's just good branding! They'll make a fortune.

I like the second one, as it accurately reflects the never-ending nature of Narduzzi's whining.

I'm so glad I officially joined TKP! I'm sitting in Chic-fil-A right now busting up laughing at the wit and creativity of this Hokie lovin' community!

I hope we demolish those bastards.

Narduzzi is disappointed, but should have been flagged for unsportsman-like for berading the refs all game long, to excess. Also, the NCAA should take action for comments able the officiating.

I watched the game with my good buddy who is a Pitt Alum, and even he said that he was surprised there wasn't a bench unsportsmanlike thrown a few times.

Said he's a fan of Nard-dawg at a coach for the most part, but that he's an ass and whines a lot.

I believe he was fined $5,000.

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

Though I really like Fuente as our HC, I think Bud Foster should be named "Head Interviewee". Fuente almost puts me to sleep (probably a good thing for a HC). Bud is so much better, at least from an entertaining perspective.

95% of what I say is sarcastic. The other 5% is usually taken out of context.

I LOVE Fuente's interviews.

There is usually content, and yes, he's got good "coach speak", so he's probably not going to say anything stupid.

He's SMOOOOOOTH and really really smart

"look at this...this is beautiful, these people are losing their minds" -Mike Patrick

I think your parenthesis says it all. Fuente gives the perfect HC interview. Bud gives the perfect non-HC interview.

I loved the quote, "There's gonna be some games like this. Coach Fuente told me when he offered me the job that I wouldn't have to play perfect defense all the time, and tonight was one of those nights."

So much bromance and so much truth in that one sentence.

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

I saw a comment on another thread saying Narduzzi's behavior is why Bud isn't suited for a head coaching position. Watching these, I can't disagree more. Bud is a passionate coach, but he's not a whiny baby.

Don't get me wrong though, we knocked our coaching search out of the park, keeping Bud on staff and pulling in Fuente feels like a dream.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Getting Fuente as head coach frees up Bud to do what he's a genius at, while providing an offense to give him a little breathing room.

It's the perfect combination.

Narduzzi still bitching about the refs when his team got the majority of the calls or should i say non-calls with PI.

If you started at the beginning of the game, you would be dead from alcohol poisoning.

I'm very happy to have a coach who keeps his calm and has an even-keeled demeanor. Narduzzi acted like a spoiled brat last night and I read on the Pitt FB Forum fans saying the same thing. Fuente never seems to lose his cool no matter what transpires on the field and I truly respect that.

"That's Houdini!"

- Jon Laaser 9/24/2016

This team is Bowl Eligible and achieved that in the month of October....... let.... that... sink... in.... and enjoy. It feels good to be back to that level of play.

Lets GO!!!!

More importantly, that happened and no one really cared. Sure, it's been mentioned and #24straight and all that, but what was once the season-defining moment for this program has been reduced to a handful of tweets.

A little embarassed I could not figure out that hashtag

Well Coach Fu cared... I heard him say on the post game radio that (paraphrased) "we have 6 wins and bowl eligible... I didn't want that to end my first year here.... not that I was counting"

Last time we could say that was 2013

How many times did Nard say "you know" in his interview? It was so annoyingly brutal that I couldn't listen to it. He needs to head over to the comms department for a public speaking course.

clym on

61 times, y'know? I mean, y'know, it is what it is, y'know?

I enjoyed watching him look clueless when the reporter asked him whether he ever considered switching things up a bit and providing help for his corners.

He made it seem like our rushing attack was so amazing that he had to isolate his corners just to have a chance to stop it. Pretty mind blowing. More fades to Ford & company in the first half would have made this a rout.

Does anyone know, is this standard Narduzzi? Does he usually pull a Brian Kelly after a loss and blame everyone else?

Narduzzi: things were really one sided out there (referring to refs). Yes, Narduzzi it was your team commirting most of the penalties. What a sore loser. Wow!

Narduzzi can go fuck a tree. I'm glad we beat that dirtbag.

Sorry for the double post in a row, but fuck that dude.

Double legs for you!

This is easier to say after a big win, but, it really is a great time to be a Hokie fan. I'm so happy to have landed Fuente. He truly seems like the embodiment of what it means to be a Hokie and I can't wait to cheer on the team next week and every week after.

Win or lose, Fuente has people feeling good and excited about this program again. It's just awesome to watch.

"If they can hang on to those edge guys and do what we need them to do out there and control [Cam] Phillips in the slot receiver spot, then I think we've got an opportunity to be able to stop the run."

Yeah....they hung on alright. They grabbed and hung on to every bit of jersey they could find.

It literally was his game plan to hold the receivers all game, and work the refs not to call it.

What a bitch fit out of Nardz. Used to have a lot of respect for him. Looks like he may have had a few of those diet cokes with a lil something something in em.

Year 3 is coming up!

My wife has always bragged to me about being a great judge of character.

She isn't the biggest football fan, but tolerates my obsessive VT fandom. As soon as they showed Nard's pregame speech, she said, "He's crazy. He's insane, I would never play for a coach that screams at me like that." I told her that is why she never played football, and she said, "No, I'm telling you, that man is crazy in a bad way!"

Every time they showed him going ballistic, she'd say, "Told you, crazy." It was hilarious, although I was having trouble laughing during the game, but man am I laughing now.

Man, you have have a lot of drinks coming your way /s

After listening to Narduzzi's excuses:

Nar-douche- ee

I wasn't able to watch the game, last night and watched it this evening. One truly sad pat of Nar-Douche's behavior was ESPN doing a montage of his antics, when they came back from commercial, when we had a 32-29 lead. Palmer et al, simply commented on his "passion". That was the perfect time to say, "here's a coach who's lost control of himself and lost his mind".

Almost exactly one year ago, Hokie nation was on the verge of collapse. Take a quick look at the thread below, following last year's Pitt game. TKPers were ready to fire the Beamers, both of them, and also threatening to withhold donations unless Whit cleans house and does something about the pitiful state of our football program. What a difference a year makes. Some of these old comments are hard to read now, because we were not kind to Frank Beamer, but I'm glad we treated him well in the end. Whit Babcock did his job, and we are a much better team because of it. Kudos to Whit Babcock for doing the hard thing, and doing it well.

That was a miserable game that showed it wasn't THAT we lost but how, with turnstiles for an O-line, seemingly little team unity/cohesion, and what appeared to be an all-around lack of effort. To me, this spoke of a culture that needed changing, but obviously not everything needed to be changed. I think Fuente has done a great job of changing what needed to be changed while leaving alone the stuff that didn't.

Mark Umansky's picture of Whit after the Duke game summed up the entire season to me:

While the Pitt game was a debacle, we looked good against NC State. The Duke OT loss just had that feeling that change was coming.

"We judge ourselves by our intentions and others by their behavior" Stephen M.R. Covey

“When life knocks you down plan to land on your back, because if you can look up, you can get up, if you fall flat on your face it can kill your spirit” David Wilson

It looks like Pitt was fined $5000 for the comments that Narduzzi made after the game. NCAA said he was unsportsmanlike.

In other news, Jimbo Fisher was fined $20k for his postgame rant about the officiating.

I never met a project that couldn't justify a new tool.

I just hope this lets the refs feel comfortable throwing flags at him and his team as the penalties occur, and not let him browbeat them into holding back.

This should act as a notice to all refs in all his future games: you have been given the green light to throw yellow early and often. If Douche rips into you on the field, throw him out of the game. The NCAA has your back. Yes, this fine is a slap on the wrist. The next one won't be.

If the flags had been thrown last Th. like the should have, that game wouldn't have been in doubt.
