Reports: Virginia Tech Quarterback Josh Jackson to Remain with Team

Reported resolution on the status of the Hokies' incumbent QB1.

[Mark Umansky]

Amidst rumors and shoddy reporting, speculation ran rampant about quarterback Josh Jackson's status with the Virginia Tech football team. That is, until now. Multiple reports indicate Jackson remains a member of the Hokies after questions about his academic status loomed over the past few weeks.

Hopefully he learned a valuable lesson from all this

He probably learned that it sucks to have your character questioned by strangers on the internet.

I concur. There has been some wild and unnecessary speculation on this site. I would hope that we as a group can be better than this in the future. I love reading articles and hearing about our team, but the negative comments on jj were way over the top.

I concur as well.

Respectfully disagree. Other sites & tweeter, yes. But here, it was mostly even tempered.

you can bet that you will hear a few nasty chants or see some unfair signs when Jackson plays on the road this fall.

Honestly wouldn't be surprised if he got worse from home fans with the way things have gone since this all started.

My buddy sent me this from The Athletic and I thought it was incredibly well written. Apologies for not having the link, so far have been unable to track it down:

Probably because The Athletic is a pay site and this is (unfortunately) a violation of community guidelines. It's a good point, though.

A bunch of drama kings and queens heard a rumor, and shat it all over the internet, getting everyone else all hyped up over something that turned out to be nothing.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

If it was truly something that turned out to be nothing, VT Football would have nixed the rumor the day it came out. There was clearly something going on but we won't know because, FERPA. This is a bit concerning because I get the sense that he is probably on probation/last strike scenario.

Could they have nixed the rumor if at the time it was something that later turned out to be nothing because of FERPA though? Seeing as the issue was of an academic nature. Their policy is probably to stay silent.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

The fact that they didn't nix the rumors ASAP all but confirms there was something going on. Not knowing the specifics of what went on, no one can definitively say it was nothing in the end. Whatever 'it' was, whatever the resolution was, were not enough to warrant his expulsion from the team.

EDIT: and let's be honest, the tweets are "a source familiar with the situation...academic situation has been resolved...remains with team" BIG hypothetical IF here...but IF there was 'something' and that 'something' has now been resolved on the academic side, he may remain with the team but ultimately the team will need to determine if any suspensions are warranted. I am hoping this is not the case, of course.

Look, this wasn't just some internet bullshit. Those of us who read newspapers read it there as well, and despite the way news is perceived these days, I have a lot of faith in the guys and institutions who've been doing it for a living a lot longer than the internet has been corrupting honest and dedicated journalism. Something was, indeed, going on and even Jackson's father chimed in.
Now, the useless and baseless speculation was unfortunate, but not entirely without legitimate interest, and since everybody thinks their opinion needs to be aired, the internet provided that platform. What's new?

Does it? Are they allowed to comment on it one way or another? I always thought that the only course of action when it came to stuff you just can't talk about is to neither confirm nor deny, as any statement could be construed as revealing private information.

But I do find it curious you take more issue with someone criticizing the staff than others dragging the character of a kid because of academic rumors. But maybe that's just me.

People here have been speculating for weeks.

You can't expect them to give up on that so easily.

I mean, there was stuff on the internet and all.

No problem with speculation...just making the point that some people are trying to police certain types of speculation. Saying it is wrong to make this assumption or that assumption. JJ is not a kid, he did something that put him in that kind of a position. I don't think it is any more wrong or right for people to have questioned his character than to question the performance of the support staff. That being said, I'm glad it is over and we can all move on.

The mentality that I take issue with is "Well, he was accused, so he must be guilty." It's an easy trap to fall into, and it really is the tendency we see in media coverage. I mean, they wouldn't have been charged and gotten all this media coverage if the prosecutor didn't have overwhelming evidence, right?

In the case of student athletes, there's always an assumption that "the fix is in", or that they get special treatment. I don't see any evidence of that at all in this case.

As far as blaming support staff, I don't see any reason to do that either. It's worth a review from the athletic department, but we shouldn't assume issues without proof. We shouldn't assume anything.

In general, our systems have a presumption of innocence, and we tend to give people the benefit of the doubt. We need to trust that there are good processes in place, and we need to trust those processes. It's the best we can do.

All that said, it's an opinion board. Debating opinions is what we do here.

I agree with everything you said. I always give the benefit of the doubt, but the court of public opinion will always be unfair. It is brutal, always, and especially these days. That's a fact. JJ won't ever be spared that for being a "kid", because for one, he isn't a kid, and two, the court of public opinion doesn't care how old you are.

My main point in all of this, was to call out the term "kid", "awe, he's just a kid, blame the support staff instead". Nope. Not buying it. Nobody is doing anyone any good by calling them "kids" or treating them like "kids". Otherwise, I don't have any issue with any of the opinions/speculation I've seen on this topic. I think JJ is a good person overall, and probably exercised some poor judgement, which we are all guilty of at times.

I hope is geared up for a stellar season!

Oh yeah, I agree on all counts.

JJ is an adult, and is responsible for his actions. That said, we can try and give him the benefit of the doubt, when possible. This incident is one such instance.

And we need to get past this. Onward and upward.

We can't be responsible for the interwebs, only what we post.

Don't take offense, but look back when you were 20 years old and ask yourself whether you were a kid. I, for one didn't know sh— at that age. He's a kid, and from what I've heard (from reliable sources) not a bad kid. ...and get off of my lawn!

In Bud we trust

Guess we've had this debate on plenty of threads, but I can't help but chime in when I see it.... team #NotAKid here, all day long. Young man... sure, but mature enough to accept consequences for actions equals being a grown-up (this isn't specific to JJ, but to all of these young men). I also didn't know a lot in my early twenties, so I'm not arguing whether these guys are immature vs. mature because that happens differently for everyone, but I knew at that age that my decisions would have repercussions.

Using different definitions of "kid" just to argue. One definition is for a youth, and the other is for someone who is new or less experienced -regardless of age. One is appropriate for describing "college kids", one would not be. I have two "kids" in college. Neither is a minor. Why can't we just give whom ever used the word the benefit of the doubt that they meant the one it sounds like they meant instead of arguing for our favorite definition on multiple threads.

Because the interpretation implies that the defined legal adult is omitted/excused from criticism or pointing out of short-comings or flaws (of which none of us are or should be). It is borderline coddling and a form of over-protectivism.
