Mook Reynolds Dismissed from Virginia Tech Football team

Hokies lose senior defensive back ahead of the 2018 football season.

[Mark Umansky]

Virginia Tech announced Mook Reynolds is dismissed from football team effective immediately.

Over three seasons Reynolds made 26 starts at various spots in the Hokies' secondary. Reynolds served a suspension during the spring semester and blue-chip 2017 signee Devon Hunter assumed Reynolds' responsibilities at the nickel/whip/OLB position.

Guess we'll be seeing if Hunter is for real sooner rather than later.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

So does this mean Joe has to drink, or does VTGuitarMan?

With this news, I say everyone drink

Yes.

Joe wins based on rank. But when something like this happens, I owe him a PBR with lime.

Devastating to our young secondary.

Damn...Dismissed....not even..oh there is something up in air and we'll see what happens...none of that..just flat out dismissed....oohhh....Let's hope the young guys come through for us!!

He was suspended for at least part of spring ball according to the statements coming out.

Even though students get dismissed from the team every year, it's crazy how many people we have lost this season. It feels institutional, so I am hoping the coaches can get this straightened out in the backend.

What's
Important
Now

This really sucks in the short term, Mook was a really solid whip. BUT, we have a lot of young guys getting experience this year. Hopefully it pays off in a year or two. Best of luck to Mook in the future.

Winter is here.

If there is any position where athleticism can make up for experience it's in the secondary. Will we see more PI calls? Probably. A couple of blown plays? Definitely. Will the sky fall? Probably not. Only the best college QBs can drop a pass in on a closely covered receiver. For the most part if a receiver has a DB within a step most QBs will not throw in that direction. Thankfully we won't face many (if any?) great QBs this season. In terms of stopping running QBs I'd say we're in good shape. Floyd, Deablo and Hunter are all over 200lbs and can deliver hard hits in run coverage.

Here's what I expect to see in terms of personnel:

  • Farley - CB
  • Watts - CB
  • Deablo/Ladler - FS
  • Hunter/Ladler - Rov/SS
  • Floyd - Whip
  • Quillen - Nickel

Interesting that you project Floyd at Whip and Hunter rotating at SS... don't most project it the other way around?

Bacon strips &
bacon strips &
bacon strips &
bacon strips

That is based on a nonscientific observation of Floyd's strengths. He's fast, he's strong, he's a good tackler but he can get used pretty badly when in pass coverage. I think Hunter has a higher ceiling in pass coverage.

So Hunter (who, coming out of HS had elite testing numbers comparable to those of top-tier NFL combine corners) should probably be in the position that has the wider range of coverage responsibilities including the slot receiver more often than not. That would be the Nickel (Whip against GT and BC where his strength and athleticism can be used around the line of scrimmage).

As crappy as it is loosing Mook, having the single most physically gifted player on the team take over after a full spring of first-team reps is about the best scenario one could hope for.

You can play hunter at Whip as well. My assumption was that Rover and SS would see more pass coverage but that must not be true.

In general I put the bigger defensive backs not at cornerback and assumed the nickel is more of a pure corner than a db/lb hybrid. That was not necessarily a good assumption.

After rewatching a couple of games I noticed back breaking plays against Reynolds, Floyd and Edmunds over the middle of the field. It may not be a bad idea to play a smaller more agile guy with deep middle responsibility. Deep middle weakness sounds a lot like the Tampa 2. It will be interesting to see how Foster adjusts the defense. He definitely limited back breaking plays from running QBs last year. Let's see if he and his staff can cover the middle better AND running QBs better this year.

Whip will cover more than a rover in today's scheme. Hunter did an excellent job in coverage at the spring game. I want to see how effective he is as an in the box defender.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Are you referring to gap fit or his efficacy as a free hitter?

Both, but he has the size and physical talent to win 1 on 1 as a free hitter. The biggest question will be how gap sound he can be, especially early. I'm spotting FSU at least one long TD run Labor Day off a bust by either Hunter or one of the LBs. If that doesn't happen, that's beyond encouraging.

I hope we sell out on the run and make us beat us throwing. were young everywhere but put those young guys on an island and let them go one on one and compete. I hate to say this but almost patt nardouche style. im way more concerned about FSUs fun game than passing game. although I don't know if the offensive philosophy change will change their style of run. if we see more spread game run game I think we will be better off than down hill power run game that ive seen most of the long runs by akers come off of last year and even in their spring game.

That was the plan against GT last year, IIRC.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

My prediction on the depth chart. My worry is that the lack of depth will require some young players to learn multiple positions. Jack linebacker (the boundary OLB in the dime look), whip, and rover will likely require freshmen learning multiple positions in camp.

Interesting to see Garbutt & Proctor on the 3 deep rather than the 2 deep. I remember how those two seemed to have a good upside when they committed to the Hokies.

They are young, so they've got some time.

Is it football season yet?

it probably says more about Belmar and DeBose than it does about Garbutt and Proctor

Chem PhD '16

Belmar came out of nowhere from the LB room and basically forced the coaching staff to redshirt DeBose. So overall, that's a good thing.

Don't read too much into it. Belmar and Garbutt both play on the same side as Hill, and Belmar started over Garbutt in the spring game. Proctor was also on that side.

I expect 5 DE's to play, and would not be the least bit shocked if Proctor is in the rotation as well.

This offseason has had quite the attrition. Hurts a little more because I really like Mook and Adonis and hope the best for them in the future. Really sucks for everyone involved, but we all have to move forward. There will be some serious trial by fire for our revamped secondary this coming season.

Mook was a great character. I hope he learns from his mistakes, and wish him the best. He'll always be a Hokie to me.

I certainly hope the underclassmen are ready to step up and ball out immediately, because our skill in the defensive secondary just took a major, major hit this offseason. If we can't get any consistent pressure on the QB, we could be torched all season long.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

Devon will be better than Mook this year. Mook likely wasn't even going to be our starter. IMO this is a good thing for the football team. Think about this defense in 2019, all with a year or more of experience (except for a R-JR in Webb):

Safeties: DD, Reggie, Ladler
CB's-Farley, Walker, Webb
LB-Devon, Dax, Rivers
DE's-Hill, House, Debose, Garbutt

Most of those guys will be back in 2020 as well. If we can figure out DT, then these will be the most talented and experienced defenses we've had since the Hall/Adibi days.

Apropos of nothing, but I'm starting to like the idea of Debose to DT. He has a thick base and a low center of gravity. If he could pack on an extra 25-30 pounds and keep a good amount of his explosiveness, I wonder if he couldn't be a beast there.

I mean even if Devon is a world beater and would have started, I find it hard to say that this is a good thing. Mook would have at least provided depth and experience.

Losing a quality player is *never* a good thing for a football program. Even if he was surpassed by Hunter, stuff like injuries (or bad targetting calls) happen. Mook would have been on the field at some point this year. The fact that this is not going to be the case definitely hurts this football team.

Disagree with your first sentence. You can be a good football player and still be an overall negative to your football team. There was some of that going on here.

I didn't say good - I said quality - implying his all around attributes (not just playing ability.) You may have better sources than I do or TKP harder, but I am not aware of any locker room type issues. I stand by my comment.

There have been some issues from what I understand. Fuente isn't a disciplinarian type but he is very much a culture guy. Mook was in the AA, Evans mold. The players liked him more than they did Jerod, but I believe there was some conflict with the coaches.

I had heard some stuff regarding Travon but not Jerod, maybe I just hadn't seen it on the message boards, did that play into his decision to leave early?

VT '17

Not directly, but from folks in the athletic department, "there were no tears shed when Jerod left Blacksburg." Tough, talented, productive college football player, not a team guy.

I have heard same.

I don't get the feeling it's a well-kept secret.

I've heard these rumors, and I don't doubt whatsoever that Hunter has a higher ceiling and better upside at the position. But this is still a huge hit to depth, because Mook is very versatile and can be used as FS, corner, or whip if needed, and experience, while not required, is very important in getting the little things right on defense.

On your last sentence I don't have much to respond to, you are far more connected than I, but from following players on social media it seemed like Mook was very well-liked among the team, but of course, social media can be very misleading.

Mook's experience would have helped against GT alone. Don't get me wrong, I think Hunter is going to be an excellent player for us, but we need all the help we can get against a GT team that apparently knows the formula to neutralize Fuente's attack.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

mook got abused by GT last year. I think hunter is a better tackler than mook while mook was a better coverage guy than hunter at this point. sure experience helps sometimes but it can also develop bad habits as well some of which I think mook had against GT. Im excited for some fresh faces to go at GT personally.

I can't speak to Hunter's coverage abilities, but I will say Mook bounced off of ball carriers while trying to make a big hit without wrapping up more than any other player I can think of last season.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Amen. Paul Johnson's defense has been mediocre for 25 years- wherever he has been. VT needs an act of god to score 30 points on them though.. UVA and Duke don't have trouble against GT's defense. It's "weird" and it sucks

GT's defense is predicated on limiting opportunities. If their offense is grinding out 8 minute drives, you're going to have fewer possessions in which to score. I'm willing to bet that their advanced metrics (points per drive, yards per play, yada yada) are.....not good.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

I do not. He is a thick body but length-wise he is a DE. He isn't a guy who moves like a Graves/Davis/Marshall type that could penetrate inside. He is a hands and bend guy. Maybe he compares to Baron, but Baron had more length.

Agreed 100%. Moving DeBose to DT would be a waste of talent. I would once again be seriously disappointed in Wiles and whoever else had a hand in this hypothetical decision.

I trust your football knowledge better than my own. But I will tell you that I'm not the only one talking about the possibility.

I know. Just sharing my opinion. I also thought Woody Baron should have been a defensive end his entire time in Blacksburg. Necessity breeds odd bedfellows sometimes.

Wouldn't Porcher make more sense at DT than Debose or could they both end up at DT?

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

You're right! I was thinking Porcher would be switched to DT very soon after arriving on campus due to his size advantage over his DL classmates.

Had read somewhere (here? TSL?) that Porcher didn't (doesn't?) want to be moved inside.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Porcher has the frame to be a little harder to move out of a gap. I haven't seen Porcher take a single rep though so I would be challenged to make that assessment. If there is legitimacy that Debose could move inside (I have no idea, just referencing the above comment), that is because, despite his size, Wiles sees Debose as being more effective than Porcher or the other options. You wouldn't make that move if he is going to be 3rd string because he was already in the 2 deep at DE.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

I'm really tempted to text him and ask but I hate bothering him unless it's encouragement before camp starts or I'm about to be in Blacksburg.

Is Fullwood not effective at DE or DT? I know he was highly recruited and moved to DT, is he in the 2 deep at DT anybody know?

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

Devon will be better than Mook this year.

Mook was really, really good at a very hard position to fill. The versatility required to play the NickelWhip the way that Mook did is hard to find, and Mook's ability to cover allowed Foster to move his chess pieces around and cover up other player's deficiencies.

If Devon is better than Mook I'll be absolutely thrilled, but also absolutely surprised. I hope you're correct!!

I second you mase! Mook played that position very well. Alooot of attitude in his approach to the position. We need that kind of attitude at all levels. I'll never forget the play against unCHEAT, when he tackled they guy and threw his shoe to the sideline. Lol. I'm my opinion better than the Kyle Fuller High five.

Hokie Love!

Yep. I see Hunter more in the Kam Chancellor mode- play closer to the line of scrimmage and attack the ball and play zone when needed. Mook had more cover/natural corner skills and could match up against these spread teams in the passing game. I see Hunter more of a strong safety type.

I agree with this post.

Well, on the bright side, I guess there will be some early playing time and a little more room in the recruiting class...

I'm feeling pretty a little more pessimistic for the Florida State game, though.

Engage Eight all night long.

The FSU game will hinge on how well the installation of their new offensive system takes. We all know they have the personnel to torch us if they have their own stuff together, but if they make as many mistakes as we did against Tennessee two years ago we'll be in pretty good shape young defense or not.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

If they make half as many mistakes as we did against Tennessee then I like our chances

True, but...

1) That would be a first-game Festivus miracle, and
2) We'd need a defense that had players in position to take advantage of it.

I'm not saying "impossible", but the odds of it have been going down.

To be fair, they build cars so that the home mechanic can't fix them very easily these days. You replace parts instead of repairing anything.

I miss my old carburated, pre-computer cars.

I remember making the mistake about 15 years ago of trying to change the brake pads on my '97 Maxima.

Brake pads.

Things I learned to do by the time I was 10, and could knock out easily on every car up to that point with a couple wrenches and a C-clamp. About 15 minutes in realized that without a specialized caliper, those brake pistons weren't going to budge.

Love that car. But the repairs I can make on it are extremely limited. Odd bolts in hard to reach locations seem to be the M.O. of car manufacturers. You should see where they put the 2nd knock sensor. Mechanic was going to charge me 200 bucks in labor to replace it, considering what they were going to need to tear down to get to it. Luckily I'm on the small side, and by laying on my side on the fender, could lace my elbow in far enough to be able to get about half a turn on the bolt at a time.

Back in the day, if you wanted to work on the farm truck, you just crawled right into the engine compartment and worked with your feet on the ground.

Mook has great energy, toughness, competitiveness, etc. and he was a great role player on a defense with other talent, but Mook's lack of true top-end speed and quickness was always his limitation. He would get exposed at times in coverage and in open-field tackles against superior athletes. Having his toughness/experience would have been nice, but Hunter provides more physical upside even as an unknown.

I'm loving all of the craziness right now. A lot of young guys will have to step-up, and it reminds me of my own Freshman year in 2004 when other Freshman like Xavier Adibi, Vince Hall, Brandon Flowers, Josh Morgan, and Eddie Royal had to make an immediate impact. Any of those names familiar?

"Dick to Hyman? DICK TO HYMAN!" - Guy in Lane Stadium crowd when Richard Johnson hit Josh Hyman on reverse pass in 2004.

Well, that's certainly a positive way to look at it.

Can't say I'm loving the craziness but yes, this also happened in 2008 when Boykin, Coale and Roberts all had to step in at WR as freshmen, and Darren Evans was an unknown freshman at RB. We won the Orange Bowl that year.

Actually, after doing some research, the 2008 roster had THIRTY-ONE FRESHMEN on offense and THIRTY on defense. Of course many were walk ons, but SIXTY-ONE FRESHMEN. There are 47 total this year.

The only freshmen that might be in the 2-deep on defense this year are at linebacker, and a couple on the line. Yes, many of the players who will have to step in have limited experience, but damn at least they've been on the team for at least a year.

Mook was my favorite player to watch on defense. I can't speak on any off the field issues, but there is no doubt that he gave 100% for the program everytime he suited up.

Wish him nothing but the best!

I agree, people are too focused on him getting beaten in coverage a few times and missing some wrap up tackles where he went for a big hit. Schematically he opened up a lot of freedom for Bud to do more of what he wanted to do. The impact of the whip position is felt most when we don't have someone who can play it effectively.

Well we didn't recruit all these guys to stand on the sideline and look pretty while the same 6 dudes carry the program for a decade.

I think he would have been 4th. Watts would have been ahead of Webb and Mook at the opening of fall camp. He was the second defender taken out of regular snaps (after Walker) at the spring game. The staff feels good about what he brings to the table and didn't want him getting hurt.

Well that's how college sports work, you're recruiting for 4 years per player. They recruited knowing that Stroman and Facyson were graduating. Facyson got an extra year too. The Alexander and Webb issues suck and I'm pessimistic for the season, but graduation is a part of college sports that schools are supposed to prepare for.

I don't know how many of y'all play fortnite, but this offseason has been like when you build a base and an opponent just starts raining grenades on you left and right. Walls are exploding, your squad members are going down, and you're just waiting for it to stop. Then, when you think it's over and you're accepting the fact that you're going to have to rebuild and work what you have left, the enemy has reloaded and starts raining more grenades.

Pretty sure that's how Mook must have felt when he got booted and Fuente told everyone he was actually suspended all spring instead of hurt.

thats why i dont draw attention by building huge bases. Youll find me lurking behind trees waiting for the base builders to kill each other.

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

This young team just needs to play with their hair on fire

I guess Bud gets that pass now

Until the first allowed first down.

Then. Then we will be allowed to take the pitchforks out and call for a burning of the entire organization.

/s as if it's needed.

Darn that sucks. Well thanks for all of the great memories Mook. You are definitely fun to watch and showed tons of Hokie spirit!

So we all know Mook was a tough and productive whip/nickel, but he gone. I and others have repeatedly brought up Devon Hunter, so I thought we'd take a look at exactly just how athletic this kid is. I brought up his SPARQ testing numbers and compared them to the most recent NFL draft (pretty sure I'm not the first to do this, but I can't find it). The results certainly soften the blow quite a bit:

Devon Hunter: 6' 216 lb
40 yard dash: 4.42 (best among 2017 high school safeties)
20 yard shuttle: 3.95 (best among 2017 high school safeties)
Vertical: 38.9"
Overall SPARQ: 139.53 - Elite level athlete. For reference, Josh Sweat was a 140.01

Top Performers at the 2017 Combine:
40 yard dash: 4.32
20 yard shuttle: 3.94
Vertical: 40.5"

Only one out of ~10 of those top performers was north of 200 lb and most Hunter outweighs by 10-30 pounds. We've got ourselves a physical freak and if he can stay healthy and execute the defense, there's no reason he couldn't be a serious force in Bud Foster's defense sooner rather than later.

Leg for the effort.

Numbers are great, but experience matters significantly. The key point in your statement is "if he can execute the defense". That is the part that we lost with Mook that will be difficult (at least initially) to replace.

Sure, but athleticism helps when experience is missing. See Tremaine Edmunds (AKA Tremaine Edwards in media outlets).

Abso-freakin'-lutely. I've lost track of the number of times Bud has said there's no substitute for experience. Still, if you don't have experience, having the size/athleticism combo of a guy like Hunter is about the next best thing. Then you add a season or two of experience to that athleticism....

Exactly. I am happy we have a freak to fill the position now, but anyone who thinks this is an upgrade to Mook in the first game is going to be disappointed. My hope is that by mid-season his half year of experience plus his athleticism put him on part with Mook.

Anyone still drunk/hungover from this??

So do we think this cements Ellis to CB this fall (after he gets his brief shot at QB)?

Eh I don't think so. I think he ends up on offense. We'll have Waller, Webb, Chatman, and Nadir all at CB from this past class. 5 might be a little excessive, especially with how talented Ellis is with the ball in his hands.

grumble, grumble, Farley, grumble.

What the heck is up with this offseason? I'm supposed to get grey hairs DURING the season, not in anticipation of it...
