Positive RE recruiting. He was out to see an uncommitted 4 star 2025 DE the day his hiring was announced. I don't think I ever saw a photo of Marve doing an in home visit (I easily could be wrong, but if he did they didn't publicize it the way the highlighted Jones, Quinn, Bowen, and Mines in home.)
His resume is better than Marve. He wasn't getting run out of town as a position coach like Marve was.
Ravens DC Marvin Lewis when they had Siragusa and Adams in the middle to keep Ray Lewis clean to run away from the scene of the crime.
Belichek's son out at Patriots. Coincidence?.......
I think it's more than that.
Siefkes
Marve
JHam
Foster
Elmassian
Mike Clark
Ron Zook ( not sure if he was DC or some other coach - internet lists both)
Bob Brush
And I think the previous one was also a first time DC but I'm too lazy to look it up.
Pry found out he was ready to roam
47 days and the coal came home
So the rumor is that Knowles wanted out after OU loss because of things said. So we had a chance until Dabo screwed us over.
To the last point, I'm in no way surprised that Pry struggles with game management because of what you said. I do find that concerning and always have. The rest I don't believe a whiff of.
Take it for what it's worth but BAG told me on twitter it was Knowles.
(I don't know how connected he remains with the program)
Not since day one. Was pretty excited for Pry early on. But considering the fact he didn't bring a single transfer or hire from the PSU staff with him to Blacksburg, we haven't actively tried to flip any PSU commits and haven't even found ourselves in many head to head recruiting battles with them if at all, Franklin tried to poach Mines, we are actively trying to hire Knowles and it's PSU that ponies up to take him, and it seems Pry's game management came directly from the Franklin school of coaching. Yeah I find it a tad concerning to say the least.
Wofford strikes again!
My personal hot take on this is that in more games than I care to think about I think the L is on offense for going "ball control" when we absolutely are/were not a ball control offense and giving the game away
That was my recollection as well, can't remember what I saw, but I was pretty sure it was something similar with comments that they were happy he was gone.
Also, in light of the other thread, where Pry said they had a candidate's in the championship game, I'm wondering if it was a position coach that may have had a background as a DC in FCS or G5 first, potentially one of the LB coaches? (Because I still would have had the concerns I listed above about one of the DCs.
I'm not sure it was Pry 2.0 exactly. I think you're right, he had a similar philosophy to Pry, but the intellectual/cerebral part, at least my take, would be that Pry would expect him to develop the defense more and figure out ways to counter what offenses were doing and adapting. Similarly how I recall how Pry was working with Bowen on things that are difficult for defenses to stop and letting Bowen adapting stuff to take advantage of that. It seems like Bowen was able to adapt (especially given a weak line) and Marve just didn't. He had a couple good players in certain positions (like APR and Strong) but couldn't seem to get a cohesive defense, and not get much out of the LBs (his position group, mind you), he didn't seem to make adjustments much/well either. He'll, maybe he's a good idea guy but turns out he's crap at implementation.
Regardless, you're right, we'll see. It will also be interesting to see if he makes any changes to any of the position coaches. Already looking forward to the spring game!
They were definitely stoked be be rid of him

#Sauces? It seems weird that we'd go from wanting and negotiating with a DC in the championship game, presumably over weeks, losing out on him, then going to a DC that is like a complete 180 from playoff-level DC in less than a week. Not sure I'm buying it.
Edit: also - weird that you'd know that we'd been negotiating with him like that, but didn't have that insight beforehand when everyone was wondering what was going on.
Knowles was definitely a candidate for the VT job. He wanted out of OSU. VT was one of his options.
Unfortunately for us he/OSU kept winning which delayed any aggressive hiring action we could take (e.g. get him for $2mil per year) and Clemson sniped PSU's DC, opening the door for PSU to back up the Brinks truck and hire him for a # we certainly could not match, much less beat.
Strawman alert.
If it happened like that, it was great for him, and bad for us.
And cost Penn State a small fortune.
Put it this way, I think a large portion of the reason he was sent home was because there aren't any rooms left at the hospital. He spent 6 hours in the ER, was told he was going to be admitted and then sent home with all the equipment and nurses that stop by to check on him.
Granted, for him, it's not overly serious and seems to be getting better. But.... Yeah
IIRC it was more a buzz of "good riddance" "onto the next" "meh" when he left, it wasn't an overwhelming narrative.
We were literally in talks with Knowles since before the playoffs. Negotiated twice to increase the salary we would offer. They kept winning. He became a hot commodity. His price kept going up. He was ready to leave tOSU. Winning the ship was the best thing for him to create that demand to get himself paid.
This is a narrative that you've harped on since day one of Pry, and I find it preposterous. Pry is not secretly directing assets to PSU and Franklin. He is not recruiting kids to PSU or easing up on recruiting kids if PSU is interested in them.
The explanation, if we were ever seriously in the running for Knowles which I highly doubt, is that Knowles was frustrated with his role at OSU which is now public knowledge and was looking to jump ship to somewhere he could have more autonomy. He is one of the top DCs in the country, which is why OSU poached him from OKSt, and so once Tom Allen left for Clemson, he was immediately top of their board as he should be and they made him a huge offer.

That's fair
