Scar - W - We will obviously win this one so our hopes for the season will instantly be sky high and we can dream of the playoffs.
Vandy - W - A nail biter win we will use to convince ourselves that if we are 2-0 vs SEC we are great.
ODU - L - We will be overconfident, turn the ball over, have mental breakdowns, and look awful. The pitchforks will come out, and TKP will implode.
Wofford - W - and no-one will care.
@ NCST - L - Our first true road game, and we will look absolutely clueless on offense - Defense will look great, but won't be able to overcome 4 consecutive 4 and outs on offense to open the half.
Wake - W - Defense will suddenly forget how to play, but offense will stage a huge comeback, and the fanbase will be divided over how bad/ok we are.
@ GT - W - Our most complete game since the opener, and we look good in closish game. Hype train is again rolling, as we are in the hunt for the ACC championship game.
Cal - W - blowout win! its all coming together! We are BAK!
L'ville - L - We are not back. Completely outclassed in the trenches yet again, though we keep it close.
@ FSU - L- a team that can't find the end zone against anyone else makes us look like a D5 team. Get blown out.
Miami - W - They are not interested in playing a bad team in the cold when they have already been knocked out of the hunt for the championship, and make too many mistakes to win.
LOLUVA - W- to ensure we get an another year of the hype roller-coaster, as the W/L record shows real improvement, so no changes despite losing to ODU......

A lingering question for me is what staff changes, if any, is he making?

Agreed. He's an LB coach so that in theory could mean none....which I think would be a bad idea with the secondary struggles we saw throughout the season.

over half of our losses were the result of his inability to adjust

If Marve was as good at his job as Bowen is at his (not an incredibly lofty bar), we would have won at least 8 games last year and would all be singing a different tune.

All the larger issues you mentioned are still true, but it seems reasonable to me this guy could help us hold onto a 2 touchdown lead against Syracuse.

My purely speculative idea that these two mad geniuses are going into the lab to cook up something really unique.

This is an optimistic take. Alternatively we threw everything at a wall to see what stuck and said "we'll figure something out" just like we did with the offense in 2022 with all the different schemes/influences and the result was *fart noise*

Let's hope Pry learned from that debacle. I am encouraged that he was flexible enough to go outside of his scheme (assuming that this wasn't an option 999 panic hire)

Because it would take away from his main responsibility, which is being a coordinator. Basically he recruits in January, most of February is a dead period, then he is off the road for spring ball, on the road in April and May, in Blacksburg for OV's in June, and then it's another dead period until fall camp starts. He won't go on the road or carry much of the heavy recruiting lift during spring ball, fall camp, and the season because he needs to focus on his offense.

I get that one more than people counting NCSt as a loss, they had an equally if not more disappointing season than us as far as expectations last year.

We can and should beat Vandy...the problem is I said that about a lot of teams last year so I'm a bit jaded now.

vs SCar - L
I'll be interested to see how SCar backfills the OC but Sellers is still putting the team on his back.

Vandy - L?
I feel confident we can win this one. More of a how many pieces did we lose and how did we fill them with portal talent game for me. Right now I'm more confident Vandy will do Pavia things.

ODU - W
Should be a burial win.

Wofford - W
Should be a burial win.

@ NC St - W
Dorean is on the down turn, replaced staff. More question marks than last year. We should take this one.

Wake - W
Extend a 4 game win streak start to feel like we might have things figured out.

@GT - L
Collapse. GT is well coached and the talent gap isn't there to overcome our lack of coaching ability.

Cal - W
Nothing about Cal scares me, at home should be a win.

Louisville - L?
Louisville will be a streaky team again this year. We stand no chance if they're hot. Toss up game if they're playing average.

@FSU - W?
Again with more question marks than we have. They're probably more talented and worse coached. Who knows what FSU will have this year. Edit: I forgot they brought in Castellanos. I'm more confident about this now.

Miami - L
I'm keeping this as an L but idk if Miami reloads from Ward. As many times as he got them into bad spots last year he bailed them about 3 times as many.

@UVA - W
It's UVA.

I've got us at 7-5 just as easily 5-7.

I'll preface this by saying I'm not particularly smart when it comes to football analysis, but I don't get the automatic L for Vandy next season. Yes, they have Pavia back for his 14th season and he's a gamer. Yes, Pry has a crap record against P4 OOC. However there is now a full season of tape on Vandy and let's not forget that last season our offense came out with middle school intramural complexity and we still should have won the game after essentially doing nothing for the entire first half. And it's at home. So while I'm not incredibly confident we win, I'm also not confident we lose. I'm.....hopeful.

I mean, this is pretty much what college football has always been like for the have-nots. We're just finally waking up to the fact that we are at the kids table now.

Talk to someone who's a fan of a G5 school. That's what Virginia Tech (and everyone else who's not P2) can expect from now on. You take a shot at a young up and coming coach and if you strike gold, you get a few years of increased success and then hope you've got a good replacement lined up for when he gets poached by a big dog. Then you likely regress to the mean until it happens again.

This is the CFB life for the majority of schools and it's not really a new thing. Hell, your odds of a quick turnaround are better now with the portal than they used to be for the bottom half of FBS schools.

I have a lot of thoughts on this. Right off the bat this felt like Pry hit the bottom of his contacts and this was a ran out of options hire. But the portal moves seem to fit his scheme so that contradicts that point some in my mind. I think his collegiate experience isn't much to hang his hat on, but the NFL upside is promising. Hopefully Pry fills the gaps at his presser.

A lingering question for me is what staff changes, if any, is he making?

So all we had to do to get the new DC announced was get to a part two discussion thread? Duly noted for the next hiring thread! /s sorta
