As my friend group's designated "Burger Connoisseur", this selection feels fair. Cellar is a good burger, made even better by their curly fries they sell. PK's burger is underrated because everyone always gets wings or pizza. Idk if one can count Burger's 37 since they're on campus and not a Blacksburg establishment? But they're really good, unfortunately their fries are god awful. Macado's has gone downhill since my VT days. I've forgotten about Lefty's...it's been a while since I've been there so I should change that next time I'm in town. Five Guy's used to be in Blacksburg but they closed/moved. All other sit down restaurant burgers in Blacksburg are mid, fine, but mid.
Fun fact: Alex took an official visit to VT, he choose to go straight to the pros at 17.
Clearly made the right decision.
Its been that way before. Recency bias on this one. Just exaggerated being on home soil and expanded field w more lower ranked teams. (And doesn't mean that h2h is a bad tie breaker...)
Sure. That'll happen in any tournament. But for over half of the outright winners and losers to be decided after just two games is insane
There were times previously when 3rd and 4th place teams were eliminated prior to the last group game...
current format isn't eliminating teams at this point (after two matches) by saying they cannot finish second because of H2H , it's saying they cannot finish third because of H2H.
That's just it tho. I don't think teams should be completely eliminated after just two matches. The best teams will get the points they need to advance regardless of tie breakers. The problem with the h2h tie break in a 4 team group is that after 2 games, more often than not, you're already going to have a team completely eliminated with no remote shot at saving their campaign. Turkiye is a great example. They're done. In the previous format, even tho they would be most likely effectively eliminated, they still have an outside shot at advancing with a win over the US. That gives them something to play for.
Similarly, Mexico has outright won their group after just two games. South Korea is now only playing for second, with no chance to win the group with some help. In previous WCs South Korea would still have a chance to win the group if they beat South Africa by a couple goals (completely possible) and if Mexico loses to Czechia (also completely possible).
Both groups A and D are basically wrapped up just over a week into the tournament. The third games in each group are going to be basically meaningless as a result. I think that's a shame.

The clear advantage of GD/GF in a format where two and only two teams wualify from each group is sussing out the three teams that go 2W1L and finish on 6 pts (or 1W 2D and finish on 5)
I am curious how many 2/3 tiebreaks (with a clear #1) would be different if using GD vs h2h. I suspect not many, because it's kind of hard to finish joint second on pts having lost to the team you're tied with short of a shock result somewhere.
Fileting a flounder is an acquired skill for anyone, much less a 7 yr old. We were still in the scale, behead, gut and fry flounder mode until I got grown up and got the hang of getting those 4 nice filets from the bones. Now, I pretty much filet and skin every fish I catch and eat, freshwater trout excepted, even panfish like croaker and whiting when I eat them.
I have people say to me all of the time they think they know someone who is a Hokie. I stop them and tell they dont need to think...they KNOW because we aren't quiet about being proud Hokies.
They were great, the haters are the same people that didnt like when I sewed dress shirts together to bring some style to the board room.
It really is going to be great for the ACC
Something that I think gets missed is that I think JMMF coming to VT is good for college football. This will elevate the ACC and continue spreading the wealth of high level players around the D1.
Nice article about Alex and Antonio
Yeah, the hydration breaks are dumb.
GD/GF makes more sense to me as a tiebreaker when only two teams qualify
This is hard for me to wrap my brain around. For 4 of the groups, this is the case. No single 3rd place team is guaranteed so every team has to operate on the assumption that only 2 teams from their group will advance.
Used to go get flounder all the time off headboats out of Margate, NJ. It's how I learned to fillet a fish at about 7 yrs old.
Sports were created to be entertainment. That is their goal to placate the masses so they don't overthrow governments. Who is the best doesnt matter as long as you have some one to cheer for.
We are also talking about FIFA here, one of the most corrupt organizations alongside the IOC. This is about money and kickbacks. They would rig every contest if they thought it would bring them more money.
My early days fishing were in and around Chesapeake, with regular weekend trips to OBX with the family to the Frisco campground. Freshwater we fished for bream and crappie with cane poles and worms, graduating to popping bug fishing as I aged, fished the NC piers a bunch as well as the surf from Sandbridge to Hatteras. Had my go for wild trout in mountain rivers, and settled on smallmouth and walleye as an adult. I have been fortunate enough to fish with guides as friends and mentors, and have even spent 5 days on your Susquehanna, 4 of them with Ken Penrod and some of the best smallmouth fishing on the planet during high muddy water at the mouth of the Juniata and surrounds. Penrod was a real trip, but he knew that water. Never had the money for destination fisheries or guides until I became one myself, but met serious anglers for tutelage. I remain an unabashed imitator in my fishing pursuits, if somebody's catching and I'm not, I'm doing what they're doing regardless of what I think or thought would be the best thing to do. I have so often seen stubborn fishermen getting outfished because they want to do it "their" way. I come around in a skinny New York minnit myself, and if I don't have what I need and can't just go get it, I try to come as close as I can to the successful lure/bait and live with that until next trip.
A lot will depend on what's there, obviously. Trout fishing was suspended after a cold winter, not sure how that has recovered. Flounder are rebounding some, I'm told, but still restricted. Don't know about the drum, but there should be some pups around. Only time I fished Masonboro, I was after flounders and got them on my go to saltwater bait these days, a gotcha jig head (or big eye type jig head) with 4" Gulp Swimming Mullet, I prefer chartreuse/white or just chartreuse, fished on the bottom. As for the tide, depending on location, I generally prefer a couple hours before and after tide change, with a beer break when the tide isn't moving.
Another possibility is pompano and whiting, both easily caught on a bottom rig with fishbites as an alternative to trying to keep fresh bait, though sometimes shrimp can be good, fishbites don't go bad in the tackle box.
My biggest gripe is the commercial breaks
GD/GF makes more sense to me as a tiebreaker when only two teams qualify than if three do, but I'm not sure i can articulate why succinctly.
But, what if...and hear me out. This is going to be a long post.
Mayonnaise.
You definitely weren't the only one. I loved it.
In that Sugar Bowl he was the best. Wow. Still can't stand him for that.
Completely agree on Donavan and Lalas. Its like watching Woody and Buzz Lightyear interact, trying to explain physics.
When I was a lad, we lived near the Susquehanna and my grandfather had a cottage in Kent County near the mouth of the Chester River.
I grew up fishing the bay from the shore and crabbing, fly fishing freshwater for trout and pan fish. I bicycled past Gary Diamonds shop every Monday morning when school wasn't in session.
