Other Sports Roundup (Both BBall and Wrestling)

Mens BBall (8-5)

Lost to UNC Greensboro (7-7) in ugly fashion 55-52 on Dec 28th at Cassell.

The team just couldn't seem to get their shots to fall coming off a week's layoff around the holidays shooting 36% from the field and only 20% from beyond the arc. Marshall Wood led the scoring with 14 points, followed by 11 points each from Emelogu and Van Zegeren. Raines really seems to have dug himself deep into the doghouse as he only got 7 minutes on the floor in this game that could easily have been turned by some dominating inside play. Eddie also was a big disappointment in this game, only scoring 4 points in 37 minutes on the court going 1-for-12 from the field and 0-for-4 from beyond the arc.

Beat University of Maryland Eastern Shore (2-9) 82-66 on Dec 31st

Solid bounce back game for Eddie and Wilson in this game, scoring 17 and 16 points respectively to lead the Hokies over UMES as Tech controlled this game from the opening buzzer. Solid contributions from Johnston, Barksdale and Thompson off the bench combining for 26 points and 15 rebounds to keep this game out of reach. This is one of those games against inferior opponents that Tech might have lost in the last few years as the opponent was not very good, but they scraped together the win and shot almost 50% from the field as a team.

Next game is against #2 Syracuse (12-0) at the Carrier Dome Jan 7 at 9pm.

Womens BBall (10-3)

Lost to Hampton (11-4) 70-60 on Jan 1st
Led by Ugoka with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Monet Tellier was the only other Hokie in double digits with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Next Game is the ACC Opener at Boston College (9-5) 1pm on January 5th
Next Home Game is January 9th at 7pm vs LOLUVA (7-6)

Wrestling Ranked#12 (8-1)

Team has participated in three invitational tournaments in December in Las Vegas, NV, Wilkesboro, PA and Evanston, Ill.

They lost Devin Carter for the season with a torn hamstring at the Las Vegas event which was a big loss, as he was the only Tech wrestler to qualify for the semifinals of the event, eventually falling to sixth place due to forfeiting matches for injury. They had three other wrestlers place in this event.

In Evanston at the Midlands Invitational, two Hokies placed out of 12 Tech wrestlers in the event, both finishing in 5th place.

At the Wilkes Open, two Hokies won titles, Jared Haught at the (197) weight class and Dawson Peck in the Heavyweight (HWT).

The Hokies next wrestle at the Virginia Duals on the 10th and 11th in Hampton, VA.
The Hokies next home match is against UNC on January 17th at 7 pm. This match will be televised on ESPN3 for those looking to watch from home.
