2021-22 Hokie Hoops Statistical Notes Volume 9

The Men's Team
Pulse, still over 100 after that AutoMaddox ending. Gaht. Dayum.

Oh you thought I was talking about last night? Nope, that's still from the Miami game. The Hokies exorcized the demons of Louisville, won two Maddox buzzer-beating triples, and dropped the regular season finale.

20 wins on the season. How far we've come where 20 games is considered a bit of a let down. I'm sure many here still remember the doldrums of the late 90s and early 2000s where we would be begging for a 20 win season. The win ties CMY with Don Devoe for 4th most wins through his first 3 seasons, and ties CMY...er for best 10th most wins through his first four seasons.

Scoring
As a team the Hokies just topped 70ppg. Leading the charge was Aluma (13.75), followed by Mutts (11.75) and Pedulla (10) rounding out the double figure scorers. Maddox got close with 9.25, as did Alleyne with 8 and Murphy with 7.25. Cattoor has fallen off a cliff, dropping to just 6.5 ppg; still good enough for a triple a half, but well below what we're used to expecting from him. N'Guessan (2.75) is the only other everyday contributor.

Rebounding
Go nuts for Mutts, who finished just 3 rebounds shy of averaging a double-double for the frame (9.25 rpg). Aluma (8), Cattor (3.5), Alleyne (3), N'Guessan (2.75), and Maddox (2.25) are the only other Hokies getting a board per half.

Assists
Mutts led the Hokies in assists with 15, but also in turnovers with 17. The best margins go to Cattoor (12:3) and N'Guessan (4:1). The only other Hokies with positive margins were Murphy at 9:6 and Alleyne at 5:3.

Experience/Depth
Four Hokies passed the 30 minute mark while another two managed to average most of a game. Those Hokies were Aluma (33), Mutts (32.75), Alleyne (31), Cattoor (30.75), Murphy (22.5) and Maddox (21). The remainder of the significant minutes went to Pedulla (18.75) and NGuessan (14.5)

Next Four
Well the only sure thing coming up is Notre Dame later today, who the Hokies beat for their first ACC win of the season. Win that, and it's off to the ACC semi's against the winner of...It's gonna be UNC. The saying goes it's hard to beat a team 3 times in one season, but it's happened to us before. If by some miracle we're still standing, face off against Duke in Coach K's last ACC tournament championship game.

Prediction
I think we can beat Notre Dame. I don't think we can beat UNC, but I can dream. I want Mike Young to be the man who spoils Coach K's final ACC game. And I want the ACC's Automatic Bid to the NCAA Dance.

But I'm gonna be a realist with a side of fatalism. We beat ND, lose to UNC, get the top seed in the NIT, win round 1, lose round 2.

The Women's Team
Well, the run in the ACC tournament went about as expected, minus a few injuries. The Hokies went 2-2 over this frame, with two losses to NC State, and two gutsy-ass wins, including an overtime thriller. Going into the post-season, the Hokies sit 23-9.

Scoring
Even missing the best player in the conference and the best 3pt shooter in the conference, the Hokies averaged their third best offensive output for a four game window, at 72.5 ppg. Leading the Hokies was Sheppard (16.5 ppg), followed by Traylor (15), Amoore (14.5), and Kitley (10.75) in double figures. Gregg (6.25) and Baines (4.75) were the only others averaging a basket a half.

Rebounding
This is where the injury to Kitley hurt the worst, as the Hokies turned in their worst four-game performance on the boards at just 27 per game. Gregg stepped up at 5.5, but Kitley still managed 4.75 and Baines netted 4 per game. Sheppard (3.75), Amoore/Lytle (3) averaged greater than one per half.

Assists
Amoore led the team with 20 assists, while C. King had the best ATO margin at 4:0. Lytle (4:2) and Amoore (20:11) were the only players at greater than 1:1

Experience/Depth
Amoore led the nine Hokies who got minutes with 38.75, followed by Sheppard (35.5), Traylor (29.5), Lytle (25.75), and Gregg (23.75) averaged the majority of minutes. Kitley (19.25), Baines
(18.75), C. King (10), and Geiman (5) averaged more than a minute per quarter.
