2019 4-Star Safety J.R. Walker Discusses what Put the Hokies Over the Top

Walker's coach lauds his versatility, athleticism, size, and believes Virginia Tech is a great fit for the Clayton HS product.

When J.R. Walker committed to Virginia Tech on October 12, it was a bit of shocker. Well, maybe for those on the outside looking in.

"No, not really, he and his dad had a plan," Clayton HS head coach Hunter Jenks told The Key Play when asked if he was surprised by the choice. "He stuck to his timeline and he stuck to what really mattered to him when choosing a program."

And that boiled down to relationships and early playing time. Walker, a perceived N.C. State lean, traveled to Blacksburg for the Hokies' contest against Notre Dame and a conversation with Bud Foster left him with much to consider.

"He just told me, with a safety leaving now, that he really needed me to come be a part of DBU," said Walker. "When he said that, I thought about it, I went home and talked about it with my parents and coaches. That really sealed the deal right there."

And it was easy for Jenks to endorse the decision.
