I know we're all gearing up for The Masters this weekend, but lets take a second to show some love to the Spirit Programs.
This time every year the VT Cheerleading and Dance teams travel down to Daytona Beach to compete for the NCA & NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance National Championship. The Spirit programs, by nature, get filed under the "Support" category, but this is one of the few times a year the spotlight is on them instead of Football or Basketball.
We send our National Competition Squads, formed from the best of the Varsity & JV squads, to compete in the Large Coed Cheer Division IA (11 Males, 9 Females) and Dance Division IA (16 Males/Females). This year, for the first time ever, the VT All Girl Competitive Cheer team will be going to compete in the All-Girl Division IA. They are a Club Team coached by VT Cheer Alumni & operated through Rec Sports.
We usually have a respectable showing in the top half of each division. We finished 4th last year behind Oklahoma State, Lousiville, & Texas Tech.
The Preliminary Competition is Thursday afternoon. Our Competition times and the other teams in our respective divisions are listed below. The scores tomorrow will determine the performance order on Friday in The Finals. The Highest Scoring team will perform last. Anybody interested in watching the routines will be able to find them here, usually about an hour after they compete. http://www.varsity.com/event/1725/2013_NCA_NDA_College You can also follow them on Twitter @VT_Spirit & @VTAllGirl. I'm sure they'll be tweeting pictures and updates over the next few days.
Both the All-Girl and the Dance Team will have to place in the Top Half of their respective divisions to move on and compete in Finals on Friday. Due to the small size of the Large Coed IA Field, everybody should move on to Finals
All three Squads have gone through a lot to get here this year, so give them the support they've earned. I wasn't able to make it to their exhibition this year, so I honestly have no idea how we'll do this year in any division, but here's to hoping for the best. Good Luck and Go Hokies.
If anybody has any random questions I didn't address, ask in the comments and I'll try and answer them as best I can.
