So why not let these kids be able to sign a letter of intent from summer before their senior season up until Feburary? There is no "one national signing day". If a kid verbally commits he is able to sign a letter of intent then and there if he wishes. That may keep a lot of kids from verbally committing to the first school he goes to and then be impressed by others during the summer. Some kids know right away. "VT (or whatever school) is where I want to play and it's not changing." Others don't and get wrapped up in the situation at times at commit on the spot to only then change their minds once they get home and have a chance to cool off. I think letting them sign a letter of intent would prevent a lot of that because if you're going to verbal, then you might as well sign. They may say, "Coach you're top of my list at the moment but I want to look at all my options." Which is completely fine. There should also be a clause that states if the head coach, your position coach or your primary recruiter leave for any reason then you can be able to opt out (however if lets say a DB wanted to decommit due to Shane Beamer leaving (for example) but Shane wasn't his primary recruiter and is obviously not his position coach or the head coach then that doesn't warrant getting out of the LOI). I'm not sure on how you would then recruit a kid if he decides to get out of his LOI due to a coach leaving. I don't know all the details of it but those are my thoughts.
