OT: Your Sports Bucket List

Only a few more weeks of the off-season. Until then, I thought it would be interesting to hear about everyone's Sports Bucket Lists. Both things you want to accomplish, and events you want to attend.

For me, I want to accomplish:
-Run a marathon (planning for this October)
-Ride Alp D'Huez (one of the most famous Tour de France stages)
-Zion National Park half-marathon...my favorite national part, would be a cool race to run
-Run a sub 6-min mile again...it was easy at 18, not so much at 41 anymore
-Skiing in the Alps
-Play Augusta National....yeah, so this one will never happen.
-Krispy Kreme Challenge in Raleigh...honestly, not sure why I want to do this

Events on my Bucket List:
-British Open...I've been to the Masters, US Open, and PGA Championship...British is the last one I need to get to.
-Take my son to Fenway and Wrigley. I grew up in Boston, so I have seen Fenway many times...need to get to Wrigley now.
-Winter Olympics in a Scandinavian country...never been there, would love to see Sweden, or Finland, or Norway...Winter Olympics would be a great reason to do that...would love to see short-track speed skating, and then downhill skiing, moguls, snowboarding events.
-Attend a Seattle Sounders game...from what I can tell, they have a great atmosphere.
-US-Mexico soccer game.
-Attend the World Cup...outside the US. Would love to see Qatar, but my kids will be too young still for that trip, and it is very expensive, and not sure how safe it is. Of course, I'll attend as many games as possible in 2026.
-VT National Championship game...I went to the first one, need to go to another.

As far as events I have attended, that I would highly recommend...
-EPL (I went to a Fulham game at Craven Cottage...Clint Dempsey scored). Great atmosphere.
-Bundesliga - I've been to one Bayern Munchen game. So different from US sporting events...very few people leave their seats during play. It was amazing, I sat in the corner, and looked at the crowd down the sideline, just uniform rows of people, no one was moving around...everyone was sitting still, watching the game.
-Skiing out west...I've only been to Breckenridge out there (on a side note, if you are ever there, visit the Breckenridge Brewery and try the Nitro Vanilla Porter)

What about everyone else? What do you want to accomplish personally, and what events do you want to attend? Or what Bucket List type events have you attended, and would highly recommend?

My list is ever growing but here are some I can think of:

To Do:
- Waste Management Phoenix Open
- US Open (I plan on taking care of this one in a few years when it goes back to Torrey Pines)
- Talladega
- Indy 500
- Sebring 12
- Darlington

Crossed off:
- Daytona 500
- Masters
- Rolex 24
- Football game at Bristol (lol)

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

A Virginia Tech Natty.

Personally I'd like to make the national points list for my weapon, but I don't know if that will ever happen. I've already had the pleasure of getting my ass beat by an Olympian, so that's pretty cool at least.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

This goes without saying, but as it is not an event that occurs every year I have trouble calling it a Bucket List item.
I will of course want to go when we make it. I wont because I don't own a gold mine, but I will want to go.

Outside of seeing VT win the whole enchilada!!!!

-Attend a Ryder Cup with the US winning.
-Attend an Open, while playing in Scotland (again...)
-Attend a USMNT World Cup game.
-Watch the Caps hoist the Stanley Cup.

For me, I want to accomplish:
- Join 1000 lb club (at ~900 right now)
- Run 7-minute mile
- Skii (at all, never done it)

Events on my Bucket List:
- Masters
- Baseball game in every ML stadium - at 9 with 2 stadiums (Turner Field & Qualcomm Stadium) closed down, possible 32
- MLB All-Star Game and Home Run Derby
- VT National Championship Game
- Auburn National Championship Game
- US-Mexico soccer game
- EPL game

Join 1000 lb club (at ~900 right now)

I've been powerlifting for almost 8 years and my dyslexic brain still read this as something more akin to the mile high club.

Using /s is for cowards.

Crossed Off - Attend a home game at Notre Dame Stadium. A lot of history has been played there. Even better, I got to see my hokies win at the game.

Haven't done:

Masters at Augusta
VT in playoffs
VT game at LOLUVA
Fenway
EPL game in UK
See a stage of the Tour de France

Have done:
Wrigley game
See game at ND
talladega
Game at Tech

I'm sure I have more but I'm drawing a blank.

I've only missed 2 games of VT vs. UVA at Hooville since 2007. You have got to go to this game, tickets are always cheap and you can usually get them the day of. Most of the UVA fans leave mid 3rd Quarter so you always have a chance to move closer to the field. I've been called every name in the book as this stadium but I'd say the worst was the 2007 game when some VT fans spray painted the VT symbol on the field. Good times!

Pour some Beer on it

Whether you are a Red Sox fan or not, a game at Fenway is a religious experience.

My father and I went in opening day in 04. He didn't tell me where the seats were. We get in the and round the corner to go in, and staring straight in front of us is the Green Monster. We walk down the steps to the bottom and right over to our seats, right against Pesky's Pole.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Red Sox ended up being at home for the ALDS last year the same weekend we played at BC. Was able to knock out VT @ BC on Saturday and Sox-Astros on Sunday (the one game in the series the Sox won). Fenway was great.

I want to see every Philadelphia sports team play a home game--so far I've only seen the Phillies. Wouldn't mind seeing Iowa play at Kinnick (they're my team B), and would love to see us in a natty of course.

Ooo how did I miss this one: a night game at Lane Stadium. Been to 11 games, but not a one of them was at night.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Let me guess, during the Wever era...

To do:
-Olympics
-World Cup
-Kentucky Derby
-Indianapolis 500
-Rose Bowl
-any kind of Game 7

I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them!

Kinda sporty, so I'll include it here (and during shark week, nonetheless).

#1 item on my BL: I want to dive with Great Whites at Guadalupe Island. My wife constantly threatens to leave me if I ever do it. One of these days im going to call her bluff.

The Master's would be cool, but I think seeing The Open at St. Andrew's tops the golf bucket list for me.

Does hiking count? I'd love to hike Half Dome if I am lucky enough to win the lottery to hike it. I'd love to see an Auburn/Bama game at both Auburn and at Bama.

Winter Olympics - would love to see those sports in action too.

I have a college football bucket list, always open to more suggestions:

  • Oregon
  • LSU - Night Game
  • Texas
  • USC
  • tOSU
  • Penn State (white out game)
  • Florida
  • Notre Dame
  • Oklahoma
  • Oklahoma State
  • Tennessee
  • FSU
  • MIchigan
  • Clemson
  • McDaniel College (D3)
  • North Dakota State
  • Rose Bowl
  • Sugar Bowl
  • Orange Bowl
  • Fiesta Bowl
  • Florida Georgia in Jacksonville
  • Iron Bowl
  • Ole Miss (Do I need to go to the game, or just the tailgate in the grove?)
  • Army Navy
  • Iowa - gotta wave to kids the hospital!

Edit: Updated with suggestions

Wold love to check that box some day. As well as a game in the Big House. But those wimps screwed me out of the easy one for 2020.

good list. All those plus several more are on my list, although I've knocked out LSU night game and the Orange Bowl. I highly recommend Army-Navy. Auburn was fun too. (If you're lucky you can catch a UGA or Auburn home game after a VT@GT Thursday night game some years).

In addition to the ones you mention, a few others that I haven't been to but are on my list: Bama, Ole Miss (mostly to experience The Grove), and UW (I checked out their stadium when I was in Seattle last summer - nice stadium and would love to catch a game there).

Have tickets to Army Navy this year! Very excited!

Jelly.

Somehow, I forgot Army Navy on my list. It's a must.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

I'd recommend a Nebraska game in Lincoln.

Obviously its more fun when they're better so maybe give Frost a couple years. --Lincoln is fun, the tailgate bars are a good time, and the fan culture reminded me a lot of VT (though they may have more people still stuck in the Nebraska glory days) I was openly welcomed to just about any tailgate, offered beers everywhere (that may have just been the fact that people were just trying to help everyone blackout before tOSU beat the living shit out of them). All in all great time.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

Son of a.....

I was able to catch most of it this year on TV... it was pretty awesome, but had to go to bed when I was watching the sunrise in France at a little before midnight here... Realized I was on the verge of completely screwing up my sleep cycle that night.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

If you like that sort of thing you really ought to consider the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Quite a different experience than NASCAR and it is all general admission and you get to just walk around and explore the place. And walking all over the infield you really get a scope of just how huge the place is. We had quite a cathartic experience standing by Lake Lloyd at twilight looking over the backstretch...it was serene.

Edit: Exhibit A (taken by yours truly)

Edit 2: Exhibit B (Found this one looking for the other one. The place is really quite spectacular, especially at night)

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

Oh yeah, that's definitely something I'm interested in, as well as catching a Roval race in Charlotte. I'm a big proponent that NASCAR needs a little more variety in its diet. The cars need to go back to shells that actually follow the lines the car is based upon, and the sport needs more road courses to bring out different racing skills. Some of those European, Asian, and Australian Touring Car series are absolutely awesome to watch, and NASCAR could take a page or 2 from their book to really take off again.

But if I had to put one 24 hour race down, it HAS to be LeMans. Especially if you're able to hop around the track over the course of the event. (I'd love to take in some time watching the cars at full throttle right before they get to Muslanne)

Driving the Nurburgring is a good one. I've driven Talladega before, which was awesome. I have a colleague that teaches driving courses at the Nurburgring on weekends...he took me on a drive at a test facility once, and it was amazing how he made every maneuver seem so easy.

One on my list used to be to watch a game at the Faroe Islands stadium, but it's not longer being used now :(

surfing and soccer 50 yards apart....that would be a good day

I'd like to try and guard an NFL wide receiver on a short to mid corner route. I was always Leonard LockDown Luxury Island Resort on my flag football team, and I'd like to see how bad I'd get burned trying to jump the route on an NFL throw and catch.

That and drink Solo cups full of stuff at the Grove in Oxford on a Saturday Morning in September.

Good luck on the marathon - I did a 40 year old birthday marathon myself. I ran the Richmond Marathon. I recommend it, and I think it's in October. They had great rest station offerings, and they printed your first name on your bib. At miles 23-26, I really needed those random fans yelling, "Go Leonard!"

Want to get your mile time down? Find a track, and run ins and outs. I was running around a 6m45s mile. I trained for a 5k by doing the following on a standard 1/4 mi track -
2 lap warm up
4 laps - sprint the straights, jog the turns.
1 lap sprint, then 1 lap jog - repeat 4x.
2 lap cool down

Total 4 miles

Did this for 6 weeks, and I dropped a minute off of my all out mile time.

Leonard. Duh.

This sounds like straight up torture.

Did that once a week I presume? Would love to improve my speed some.

'07 Mechanical Engineering

"Touchdown, Tech! I have never enjoyed saying that more"

I did this twice per week when getting ready for a 5k. I ran five days per week. I did the above on Mon, Wed. 30-40 minute tempo run Tue, Thu, and then Saturday long run (5-6 miles) at 9:00 minute mile pace.

You could probably do it 3x per week, call it HIIT, and you'd be good for the week on cardio, AND you'd increase your speed.

Leonard. Duh.

I want to 360-dunk a basketball on a regulation goal.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

She's qualified doe.

She is qualified.

But I am also thinking of an actual ankle snapping slide tackle for her brain dead foul in the box against Germany in the semifinals of the 2015 WC when the score was 0-0, setting up Celia Sasic for what should have been a go-ahead pk, that was bailed out by Sasic missing the shot.

As a former player, I can forgive the contact between Popp and Brian. Aerial collisions are a part of the game. Only with replay could you even see the slightest hint that it could have been a penalty. What Julie did was a clear foul at a critical moment that could have eliminated the US.

Checked off the bucket list with my dad last year in one weekend:
-Thursday night game at Lambeau against the Bears
-Friday game at Wrigley
-Saturday night game at Camp Randall in Wisconsin

Vroom Vroom

That's an awesome weekend.

My most sports -packed weekend was 2 years ago, but decidedly less awesome: Nats-Cards NLDS Game 5 on Thursday (my fiance is a Nats fan, they lost), VT@Syracuse on Saturday (Tech lost), Eagles@Redskins on Sunday (I'm an Eagles fan, they lost). Fortunately we had VT-Miami in the Burg that Thursday, which was a nice bounceback.

Sport's Bucket List:

-LSU (night game)
-Florida (night game)
-Georgia Florida game (World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party)
-Braves World Series Game
-Minnesota Vikings Super Bowl
-Virginia Tech National Championship game
-Real Madrid Champion's League Final (should have gone to Cardiff last year, had a friend there I could have stayed with)
-El Clásico at the Bernabeu
-Attend a World Cup outside of America

Bucket List moments I have completed:

-See Ronaldo play in the Bernabeu
-Virginia Tech beat Clemson (2007)
-Alabama game

-This one is a little different because it's not a single moment, but my favorite thing that sports has given me is my (at least once as season) annual trip to Blacksburg to see a game with my Dad. We haven't missed a year since we started the streak when I was in 7th grade (2005), and it's one of, if not my favorite weekend in any given year. I expect this tradition to continue until we physically can't do it anymore.

I don't understand the concept of being in marathon-ready shape but unable to run a sub-6 mile.

In any case, I would put this as a starting point for my bucket list (haven't really thought about it too much).
Personal goals:
- Get in shape and run a sub-25 5k (I was only barely sub-20 in high school)
- Run a tough mudder or similar (I find street running boring, and paved surfaces destroy my shins)
- Hike to the summit of Mount Whitney

Attendance goals:
- VT national championship game (obvs)
- VT basketball NCAA tournament game
- Games at each ACC school's home stadium (so far only Miami, Pitt [though not against VT], Syracuse, and UVA)
- Games at the following locations: LA Coliseum, Rose Bowl, the Big House, the Horseshoe, Notre Dame Stadium
- Daytona 500, and a race at Talladega

I'm sure there's a ton of others, but those are the big ones I can think of right now

I completed two marathons and while I never thought to try, I doubt I could have run a 6-minute mile.

Perhaps I wasn't in what you'd consider "marathon-ready shape" (I was probably 230lbs at the time) but my only goal was to finish. :-)

I am not quite in marathon shape yet :-) currently running about 15 miles at a 9:00 pace...concentrating on distance right now. it's actually been a while since trying for a 6:00 mile.

Attend:
An EPL game at Old Trafford
El Clasico
World Cup game(s) and qualifiers
Monaco Grand Prix
All Blacks match in NZ
Football game at FSU (sadly don't think I'll be able to make it this year)
Football game at Ohio State (didn't make it when we won despite plans...)
Final 4 March Madness game
National Championship Game when VT makes it again
Yankees game at Fenway

Participate:
NY Marathon (with an actual qualifying time)
Ironman (never happening though)
Heli-ski (Alaska would be great)
Ski Silverton, Colorado (one lift, nothing groomed,, only with guides)
Ski at Whistler, Alta, Big Sky, Jackson Hole
Ski on EDIT: most continents

Plenty more I'm sure but that's what comes to mind immediately.

Ski on every continent

Antarctica would be...interesting, from a logistics perspective.

Good point! Edited! Take your leg.

Silverton is absolutely amazing! I went on a day without all of their normal powder (had to book it way in advance and lived a solid 6-hrs away), but it was still the highlight of my snowboarding experience. Anywhere you have to pack a probe, shovel, and beacon is okay in my book. I got to do some of the dumbest things I've ever tried on a snowboard... riding down a frozen waterfall, 40 foot jump nearly landed (there was a ditch I was not aware of when I launched and ended up hanging upside down with the board being the only thing keeping me out of the water/ice. Highly recommend it!

Besides the obvious:

- There are lots of places to skydive and SCUBA that I haven't been to yet.
- Bourbon Trail road trip. Currently planned for 2020 concluding with the VT @ UL game.
- See a Cowboys game in Jerry World. I've been a fan since I was little kid and have seen them at RFK and Fedex, but have never been to a game in Dallas.
- The ultimate college football road trip: spend an entire fall doing nothing but traveling the US and checking out a different CFB venue each weekend. This will obviously have to wait for retirement.
- Attend Army/Navy
- Take my dad to a Packers game @ Lambeau
- Take Mrs. Freefall to Tahiti... and while we're there, check out the action at Teahupoo!

- See the Caps win the Stanley Cup
- See a game @ the horseshoe (I was born in Columbus and my family are all tOSU fans). Double bonus points for it being the Hokies and us getting the win!
- Skydive in Hawaii
- Run a marathon (MCM '03 and '05)
- Attend a VT MNCG

Completed:
- Watch Hokies beat Clemson, Miami, UNC, UVA live
- Finish a 5K in under an hour
- Red Sox - Yankees game in the Original Yankee Stadium
- Fenway Park
- Oriole Park at Camden Yards
- Attend 'Rasslin event
- Go to an NFL game
- Go to an NHL game
- Watch Angela Tincher embarrass an entire roster of batters (sadly not the no-no against Team USA)

On The List:
- Attend a World Cup game live (preferrably with the USMNT)
- Attend a World Cup game live (preferrably with the USWNT)
- Wrigley Field
- Attend a NASCAR race
- Monument Ave 10K
- Play Cricket
- Watch the Hokies beat FSU live
- Set course record for worst score at Augusta National and the Old Course at St Andrews.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Monument Avenue 10k is a fun one, and most importantly, very flat.

It is very fun, especially running by all of the college houses. Richmond is a great city for races. The population really comes out and supports the runners throughout all of the course. This is true for 10ks and the marathon.

The 10K also has my fastest official 5K race time, and it was on the second half after the turn.

On the List:
- Complete the Ironman in Hawaii
- World Series Game 7
- SuperBowl (pref for Eagles)
- Hokies in CFB National Championship (and win....duh)
- Make it to Base Camp for Everest

You people wanting to run long distances. I can't wrap my head around it. Like do you imagine someone chasing you?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

I don't. Maybe some endurance athletes do, but I personally just enjoy the challenge of pushing my body and seeing just how far I can go. Plus, it's addicting. I rode the Virginia Creeper trail this weekend and that ended up being 34 miles, which is a middle distance ride for me. Pretty sure I had a smile on my face the entire time, despite a few challenges along the way.

Honestly running for me is enjoyable just because of the routine and just only relying on yourself. It is also something that I share and can do with my dad that can give a large sense of accomplishment no matter how many or how often you run long distance races.

I like that it's something I do that has real, tangible results. I never envisioned myself anything greater than a 5K or 10K Runner a few years ago, but once you push yourself beyond a 10 Mile run you want to go farther. My first marathon is in October, and I'm shooting for a certain goal, but I know for the first attempt a finish will be a major accomplishment.

First time commenting on The Key Play . go easy on me . The only thing on my bucket list is not sports related , sorry but had to reply . Its getting a ride on an F-15 ( I work on the nose cones ) .

My personal to-do list is fairly short:
-Run a marathon in every state. So far, I've done four and knocked off four states.
-Complete a full Ironman. I have the 70.3 under my belt, now I need the whole thing, because I'm a little crazy like that.

As for non-me related sports, I want to:
-Watch an Atlanta Braves game in person.
-Make it to a Redskins game so I can experience the misery in person.
-Watch a game at Lambeau, just for the experience.
-If the Hurricanes ever make another Stanley Cup run, I'd be down to go to one of those games.
-Go watch VT-UVA at Lane North.

I'd be down for hitting some of those to-dos with you.
- I've been to Fed Ex for a Skins game--Hubby gave me and my dad tickets for Christmas in 2007 (which crossed off a bucket list item of seeing my Boys play the Skins)--was not impressed with the stadium or fans. They only had slightly more people there than a LOLUVA home game.
-I'd go toLambeau in the early part of the season before it becomes the frozen tundra. I don't need to experience frostbite/hypothermia.
-Lane North would definitely be an interesting experience...
The other 2 could be fun just to do.

Shame you couldn't make it to the Ted for a Braves game before they moved. The new stadium is absolutely awesome, but the Ted was a special part of my childhood. Next time you're in Atlanta you should go for it, you can usually get seats for pretty cheap.

Can confirm, as a Washington fan attending a 'Skins game at FedEx is the worst. Obnoxious fans, terrible transportation, no atmosphere.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

So are you the one who "fixed" the logo at Lane North?

2 time Longwood grad married to a Hokie.

I would be honored to say that was me, but sadly it was not. But it's ridiculously easy to break in walk in during the wee hours of the night..........according to some friends of mine. I'm sure they have a security guard but he usually leaves around the 1st quarter

Rose Bowl - would love for it to be with VT playing
Rose Bowl Parade
CFB National Champiionship - once again extra bonus points if VT is there. (At the Rose Bowl would be a thing of destiny and a must attend)

Wimbledon
College Basketball National Champiinship Weekend
Tour de France - Mountain Stage
Masters
Daytona 500 - actually go to race and not just drive around during race week and leave to finish the family vacation some place else.

Things to Accomplish:

Things I've Done:
Orange Bowl - Mom started me scalping tickets young. Saw some of the Nebraska squads go there In the late 80s.
Orange Bowl w/VT - (the one we lost) got sick as a dog but we had fun.
VT - Bowl games: been to a couple of Belks, Military,
VT - kickoff games: ATL twice, DC
VT Away games - ND, Nebraska
NCAA BB Regionals - been to DC, NY, and Syracuse when they've hosted.
VT - ACC BB Tourney - DC and Greenville
Pro Golf Tourney - inside the ropes: Volunteered at the tourney in DC when it was the Booz Allen Classic. Those guys are good.
US Open Tennis - used to go back to undergrad early to go to flushing meadows with mom once she figured out she could catch some matches as she dropped me off.
European Soccer - caught a standing room only seat for SC Freiburg when I did a study abroad. German fans I saw did not sit the entire match. Chants, cheers, everything. They did cue neatly in their allotted standing spot.
Start a Full Stadium 'Let's Go - Hokies'. Did this at a Wake Forest away game. It was a small stadium but still fun to have a few thousand folks waiting for that Let's Go.

I told him I’d crawl on my hands and knees to be the DL coach at Virginia Tech. Now, all of a sudden, I’m sitting in this chair and I told him I’d still crawl on my hands and knees to work here. I just want to be here.
