People are so quick to tag my name with someone who hasn't taken a hit in lane Stadium is it that easy to be David Wilson— David E. Wilson (@4stillRunning) December 1, 2018

I think he's just annoyed because every running back recruit we've had since 2011 that was 3* or up seemingly got pegged as the next big name running back for us. The sad reality is we all know that David Wilson was the last truly elite running back we've had.
You could say that these types of tweets are meant to give David Wilson the nod as a Hokie great, but I'm sure it also gets old when none of them have panned out so far.

This really makes me wish we still have NCAA Football series. I miss that game so badly, especially with how much graphics have improved with the new consoles.

I think it's more just him adjusting to DE still. There is no reason to hit the panic button on him yet. He may well be a part of a rotation at DE next season where he makes a big impact. I think we will learn more about where he's at come spring time.

He's just raw from a technique standpoint. Most figured he wouldn't really contribute until year 3 or 4 so we're still on schedule. Am actually really happy we were able to get him so many reps this year

For some reason I read JJ the first time. I also think Harris eventually takes over at C but idk who the RG would be, so I stuck with about and Harris.
You'll know about Webb soon enough.

Why do you have to play with my emotions like this???? His Twitter seems very much Pro Hokies and He is back practicing some after his injury, so what's up???

Think you're both crazy. Willis has shown me in 9 games that he can't see the field, makes bad decisions with the football and even worse decisions when he scrambles (see near 25+ yard loss against UVA on OT). Scared money may not make money, but neither does careless money

Our other options include a low-ceiling non-mobile QB and two QBs who have such limited experience that either would be a huge risk to start over a senior incumbent.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Think this is pretty close to what we see. Farley needs to spend the entire offseason practicing tackling in space. Would love it if a young guy like Conner challenged Floyd at Rover. Floyd has been inconsistent and frustrating at times.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I think Willis needs to improve in his RPO decision making, but I don't see how he isn't the clear starter if he's around, unless Hendon or QP make some huge offseason strides
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I'm saying he makes the offense more dynamic than JJ, and unless HH or QP make significant strides in the offseason, I don't see how anyone starts over Willis.

I don't question his heart, but if heart alone were enough I imagine some of us here would be Super Bowl winning QBs, champions in their industries, NBA finals MVPs, etc.

He's gutsy as hell. From the UNC scramble, you knew the kid will give it everything.
I think the fact that RW is athletic makes people round up their perceptions of his performance. And the fact that JJ is "Dad Bod" makes people round down their perceptions of his performance.
It's fascinating.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
To be fair it's not just that JJ has a dad bod, he totally plays like he has a dad bod too. Which is not to say he can't be a good QB for other reasons, but he's not a true duel threat. RW has been surprisingly effective in the running game in a way JJ really wasn't outside his debut game against WVU.

Lawrence is a true freshman. Willis is a redshirt junior with previous starting experience and a year in the system. I appreciate what Hale is trying to do but it's not working.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Hazelton started for a year before transferring and practiced with Willis last year. Kumah and Grimsley played last year. Savoy played last year before getting buried. The RBs played last year. Cunningham played last year. The o-line had experience. Willis's rating was 54th in the country of qualified QBs.

no of course not, and throwing directly to the DB isn't a bad decision, so long as you have Dalton Rambo there to rip the ball out of his hands as they fall to the ground.

Well yeah he's not actually better than Lawrence. But he doesn't have to be. He just has to be better than Jackson

what a complete thread hijack...I thought this was about recruiting. Need another thread about next years' depth chart.
Is there any actual recruiting news, ideas of total #s we will sign, top remaining targets, who signs early vs late, potential early enrollees, any potential targets that committed to schools that just lost their head coaches (e.g., UNC), juco news, etc.

In regards to Willis - he clearly had one of his best games in regards to decision-making. Willis' has more physical talent than JJ so he looks like a better choice. His mental game has been sub-par in many games this year and has held him and the team back. The question will be can he control his emotions, not miss pre-snap check calls, get the team into the right play, make the simple reads and be consistent to let his physical abilities shine.
He will clearly be in the competition, but I think the Qb competition will be wide-open and go on well into the fall. For Willis to start he has to improve on pre-snap communication, be able to be more effective in the RPO and zone read game or we will not have an effective running game to be competitive against the good teams.
I'm a fan as his arm brings some things into the passing game that we need to get to the next level. However, he was increasingly frustrating to watch in the zone read game and getting mixed up on certain easy passing tree situations. I hope he uses the last 2 games as a springboard to slow down his mind in game situations.

It was more than decision making. He had a great half of actually being accurate on balls across the middle. He was so poor in those this season, especially the UVA game. But after that first dime to Grim, he was on fire for the rest of the half. That's what he needs to do. Be better at quarterbacking.

Willis is just better physically in every aspect than Jackson and I'd be extremely disappointed if he didn't play over Jackson. Jackson is extremely limited and the only options with better potential for this offense are a developed Hooker or Patterson in my opinion. We know what we have in Jackson and he'd be a valuable back up, but I wouldn't be surprised if Jackson transfers as well. He's not a quality ACC starting QB.

I don't think Willis is, either. I think we'd have more than 6 wins with Josh at QB and wouldn't have played Marshall this weekend.
Willis makes some very dangerous throws (two near picks on final drive against UNC, both of his picks against UVA) and doesn't see the field well at all. In fact, outside of yesterday he has this tendency to stare down his receiver and rarely seems to progress pass them. Let's also not forget his questionable decision making holding on to the ball far too long to try to make something out of nothing (sacks yesterday, nearly making our OT FG against UVA a 60+ yarder)

Which of our 6 losses by double-digits (4 of those were by more than 20) was JJ going to turn into wins for us?
Willis had 22 passing TDs (plus 3 rushing) and 8 interceptions. With even an average defense (ours was 97th in the country), we would have been playing Clemson on Saturday.

As a former QB Willis drives me crazy sometimes, but to me it isn't even a question who should start next year when talking about jj and Willis. I don't think it's close. Willis can make every throw, he has tons of experience, is mobile (unlike jj who looks like he's in wet cement when he decides to leave the pocket). As for Willis starting over hooker or QP, that is something we all will be wondering. We have no clue how these guys have progressed. It may come down to being does Fuente think they can win the coastal going with Willis, or do we start the young buck (whoever that may be) and hope he develops during the year and possibly win the coastal......yet be playing the long game with development. Me personally, if it's close with one of the young guys I would roll with them. Get them some experience because with our DT and CB situation I don't see any chance at being anything better than a coastal winner at this point.

Is David Wilson recruiting against us?
He just wants that respec put on his name.
(More importantly, nobody should be tweeting at Chris Tyree anyway)
I think he's just annoyed because every running back recruit we've had since 2011 that was 3* or up seemingly got pegged as the next big name running back for us. The sad reality is we all know that David Wilson was the last truly elite running back we've had.

Last elite back with good knee*
Not comparing Shai and Marshawn to David Wilson. Different backs, but a couple better knees could have been a big difference.
I'd put Edmunds in that "elite with bad knees". IIRC, vs Bama, in his 1st game, he ran for more yards than any other back, that season.
Anyone want to take a stab at how our depth chart might look for next year?
Tre Turner every position on offense. Dax every position on defense.
I'll allow it.
QB: Jackson, Patterson/Hooker
RB: McClease, Beck/Holston/Hunter
WR: Turner, Kumah
WR: Hazelton, Simmons
WR: Grimsley, Patterson/Ellis

Think Willis transfers?
Possibly, or graduates. If he stays we could have the starter in Jackson, and a three headed monster at backup

WR: Turner, Kumah
WR: Hazelton, Payoute/Simmons
WR: Grimsley, Patterson/Ellis

This really makes me wish we still have NCAA Football series. I miss that game so badly, especially with how much graphics have improved with the new consoles.
Is this Hunter to RB thing a done deal?
No
Thought word on the street was Beck is leaving the team to focus on track?
Grey shirt
shouldn't Garbutt be backing up Gaines since he has started in his place?
No Proctor on any of these. Dude was highly recruited. Is he a bust at this point?
I think it's more just him adjusting to DE still. There is no reason to hit the panic button on him yet. He may well be a part of a rotation at DE next season where he makes a big impact. I think we will learn more about where he's at come spring time.

Try again on QB, RG, C, LB #3, and CB #1. Depending on who we land, a JUCO could definitely start at DT and CB#1
Webb is a Juco.
Webb also might not be around
:(
Why would Webb not make it to next season?
That's disappointing to hear. It's not going to ruin the next season but at the very least our CB depth would be very solid if he stuck around.
uh, what?
I'm only really guessing at OL
Well give us your depth Chart LAHokie!
Willis
Clease
Hazelton
Turner
Grimz
Keene
Darrisaw
Lecitus
Harris
Hoyt/Culver
Silas
Garbutt/Belmar
Porcher/JUCO
Hewitt
House
Dax
Ashby
Ladler
Watts/JUCO
Farley
DD
Reggie
Our starting 22s are the same except Harris for Hudson and a position change and I listed Belmar before Garbutt, do you see Webb leaving?
For some reason I read JJ the first time. I also think Harris eventually takes over at C but idk who the RG would be, so I stuck with about and Harris.
You'll know about Webb soon enough.
Why do you have to play with my emotions like this???? His Twitter seems very much Pro Hokies and He is back practicing some after his injury, so what's up???
He is very much Pro Hokies. He is just hurt. Feel bad fo him.
Just got another major injury. May never play at VT....or anywhere else for that matter. Hope he can come back, but man, talk about bad luck.
Think you're both crazy. Willis has shown me in 9 games that he can't see the field, makes bad decisions with the football and even worse decisions when he scrambles (see near 25+ yard loss against UVA on OT). Scared money may not make money, but neither does careless money
True but, I think going back to Jackson is a mistake as well. Either way they're both just stop gaps until QP or HH can develop
Our other options include a low-ceiling non-mobile QB and two QBs who have such limited experience that either would be a huge risk to start over a senior incumbent.
Josh Jackson is the DEFINITION of scared money. Neither is a good option.
Think this is pretty close to what we see. Farley needs to spend the entire offseason practicing tackling in space. Would love it if a young guy like Conner challenged Floyd at Rover. Floyd has been inconsistent and frustrating at times.
House = Mihota. Won't see him be cleared and effective early, if at all.
Completely disagree about Willis/JJ, but we have all summer to argue those suppositions. I don't think either are very good.
what are the chances King make some noise at RB as a FR?
I agree with an open competition at QB....

Something to keep in mind when talking about QB.
I think Willis needs to improve in his RPO decision making, but I don't see how he isn't the clear starter if he's around, unless Hendon or QP make some huge offseason strides
If we were Hoo fans, we could talk about how our QB is better than the QB at Clemson...
I'm not saying he's better than Lawrence at all.
I'm saying he makes the offense more dynamic than JJ, and unless HH or QP make significant strides in the offseason, I don't see how anyone starts over Willis.
I wan't busting on you. I just saw on El Sabre some Hoos posting stats and talking about how they were glad that they had BP instead of TL.
My bad, misread what you meant. All good.
He didn't have to live The Ryan Willis Experience all season.
I do. He can't see the field and he makes very dangerous mistakes with the ball.
He can run down a DB to make a game saving tackle! What heart! — they said.
He shouldn't have thrown that terrible interception in the first place! — we said.
I don't question his heart, but if heart alone were enough I imagine some of us here would be Super Bowl winning QBs, champions in their industries, NBA finals MVPs, etc.
He's gutsy as hell. From the UNC scramble, you knew the kid will give it everything.

Lawrence: 326 pass attempts, 7.99 YPA, 65% completion
WIllis: 333 pass attempts, 7.6 YPA, 58% completion
Lawrence is a true freshman. Willis is a redshirt junior with previous starting experience and a year in the system. I appreciate what Hale is trying to do but it's not working.
396 attempts, 7.55 ypa, 59.6% completion. RS-Frosh, 1 experienced WR.
Hazelton started for a year before transferring and practiced with Willis last year. Kumah and Grimsley played last year. Savoy played last year before getting buried. The RBs played last year. Cunningham played last year. The o-line had experience. Willis's rating was 54th in the country of qualified QBs.
Those stats are Willis. The 1 experienced WR wasn't anyone you mentioned.
yeah but all those guys are 3 stars! Lawrence is surrounded by all 5 stars and that's all that matters /sss
You don't think having 4/5* receivers makes a quarterbacks job easier?
If our receivers were faster, Willis would just throw the slants further behind them.
I found this funny but I have to admit Willis has dramatically improved his slant game as the season wore on.
It was clearly better vs. Marshall than UVA. Must have been a lot of reps on slants during the week. Hit our guys in stride and they can run for days.
That pass in OT vs. UVA to Turner should have been an easy TD. But from his first pass to Grim vs. Marshall, it was clear he was on.
no of course not, and throwing directly to the DB isn't a bad decision, so long as you have Dalton Rambo there to rip the ball out of his hands as they fall to the ground.
Well yeah he's not actually better than Lawrence. But he doesn't have to be. He just has to be better than Jackson
Missing Ladler - he will start

I'm the one complaining about this thread getting highjacked all the time and I hijacked it above.

Grant, is that you?
One of his picks against UVA was a batted ball at the LOS. Not sure I'd hold that against him as a dangerous decision
...trying to throw through a rusher isn't a bad decision?
Scared money don't make money
I agree with you. My main point is he won't have that opportunity if his mental game doesn't improve. The coaches will go with someone else.
Why don't we start this whole thread over? Jeez!
Let's make a separate "Projecting the 2019 Depth Chart" thread, so we can not have this many comments only vaguely related to recruiting.
How does complaining about what is or isn't in a thread not the exact same thing you are complaining about? Worse maybe since there is valuable discussion above.
Just rename this thread about depth chart and start a new recruiting thread
