Jonathan McLaughlin commits to Virginia Tech

According to JC Shurburtt, National Recruiting Director for 247Sports, offensive lineman Jonathan McLaughlin switched his commitment from ECU to Virginia Tech. Rivals.com rated him as a 3-star offensive tackle. He spent this year prepping at Fork Union. According to Andy Bitter, he'll try to enroll in January. However, if he isn't approved by the NCAA Clearinghouse, he'll return to Fork Union and enroll in June. He's the fourth linemen to join Tech's 2013 class (Braxton Pfaff, Parker Osterloh, Kyle Chung).

Here are his highlights from his senior year in high school (Mauldin, SC).

A few things jumped out at me when I watched his film. He pulled a bunch (from the back side), and handled himself in space. He quickly located the defender and either suffocated them or drove them out of the play. He had active feet in pass protection. He stepped into the bucket, and kept his feet chopping. He put a lot of defenders on their butt. I am sure French will add something more substantial than that.

The Frankinator is out on the trail taking care of business.

Pulling

He looked really good pulling and looks very athletic. They said he improved even more at Fork Union and I'd love to see his highlights from his prep year.

Looks

Like more of a guard prospect than a tackle he's pretty athletic for a big man. Hopefully we get someone in there to coach him up right

Beamer Recruiting

Could Beamer be hitting the recruiting trail because he wants to make relationships with these people and secure them because he will be there, knowing that if people like Newsome, O'Cain, or Sherman get them then they might change their mind once they're gone? Just a thought. I personally don't know how active Beamer is in recruiting usually, but this is the first I've heard of him doing substantial work outside of official visits and such.

HC has one in-home visit for every recruit

McLaughlin seemed to enjoy Frank being in his living room. I don't see anything out of the ordinary here.

I guess you just don't really hear about it much except if it's Nick Saban sitting in the guys living room. Haven't heard too much about Beamer doing it

I don't know how standard it is, but Beamer did an in-home visit to land Ryan Williams.

Viva El Guapo

I wonder if...

the height and weight on Rivals are for his senior year of HS or if they're current specs. 288 lbs seems kind of undersized to me. I checked Fork Union's roster page and they have him listed at 288 too. Not upset at all that he's chosen us, his weight just drew my attention.

I'd like to think that the matte finish helmets are what sealed the deal. Just sayin'.

I'm here for the memes, I just stay for the football.

Not the Hokie tracks?

"I never surprise myself"

We need every offensive lineman we can get. Even more important: a coach that can develop them effectively.

I support Coach Frank Beamer.

Johnathan McLaughlin will finally bring the kind of no-nonsense political commentary that VT football has been desperately lacking since William O'Reilly graduated.
