Deon Newsome Commits to the Hokies

As first reported by 247Sports, Deon Newsome has committed to Virginia Tech over Virginia. Deon's father is former Hokie Myron Newsome who played at Tech in the late 90s. Newsome is 5-11, 172 out of Hampton in the seven-five-seven.

Deon is a true athlete that lines up all over the field for the Crabbers.

Will he be at wide receiver, where he's averaging 27 yards a catch? Or maybe tailback, where he turned a 2-yard loss into a 3-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal last week? Or even quarterback, where he's particularly effective in the wildcat?

The truth is, you just don't know. And that's just offense — he's also a morale killer at linebacker and as a return specialist.

He projects as a corner back, and he might be the second/third to last defensive back we take in this class (DaeSean Hamilton, Kendall Fuller being the other two).

What do you guys think of his film?

Definitely Defensive Side

The kid is shifty and appears to tackle pretty well. He will do well on special teams, either returning or defending, but he will stay on the defensive side. He appears to have issues carrying the ball and has David Wilson syndrome of not wanting to go down when he should. Still, a solid pickup and the fact that UVA offered him too is a double win.

Recruited as ATH, but prefers offense

Hmm...

Beat Alabama.

He looked better on D

He just seemed to be more of a natural on D. He is definitely a playmaker. Although with so many DBs in this class, I can see him moving to WR.

Not sure how I feel about rooting for a Hampton High kid

Guess I can suffer through it. Does VT get a lot of kids from Hampton? I don't remember too many Crabbers that became Hokies.

Uhh really

how about Tyrod Taylor

Touchdown Tech!!!

Crap, forgot he went to Hampton

Age is catching up to me. Went to Menchville and saw them bludgeon us many times it's almost painful.

Everyone thank Al Groh!

For destroying the Hampton High-UVa bridge!

What did Al do to destroy the HH-UVA connection?

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster (both quotes)

good ol' find

"In current quarterback Tyrod Taylor, Smith thinks he has the makings of another big-time recruit in two years."

i think he was right
