For the most part, that was an extremely tough game to watch. The defense made stops, held Virginia to 7 points, and forced turnovers. The offense did as little as possible to win. O'Cainspring had 95 plays to work with, but only managed 303 total yards. Also, thanks for the assist Mike London. Your clock management on Tech's final possession was something fiercely beautiful. There were some excellent individual efforts which will no doubt be highlighted here before the goal.

The only things that are important right now is we beat UVA, again, and we're going bowling, again.

Talk about the game here, and we'll get back to you after the weekend.

HAHAHA Suck on that Mr. Former Cop!!!

Burn the tape of that game

Good God was that ugly. Beats losing though.

you right. Ugly ass game, Ugly ass season, nuff said

I'm happy we beat the Hoos, but to me this could be bittersweet. If this saves O'Cainspring for another season, then....

That being said, nine straight feels pretty good. This, arguably, hurts UVa worse than 38-0.

boom, roasted.

That won't stop significant changes. Empty seats for a rivalry game and boos against a so-so defense plus, you know, eyes, will make the difference. Too many boosters are unhappy, and the big money drives the changes.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

i couldnt believe all the empty seats in the sez. i guess i dont have a ton of room to talk since i didnt go either but damn.

Other sections were bad too

I was in the Western Corner of the NEZ. In the second half the NEZ was empty enough that pretty much everyone else in the section had room to migrate toward the East side of the NEZ (with the sun) leaving my friends and I as 4 people taking up 2 sections. The East stands seemed emptier than usual as well. Horrible for a rivalry game.

to the heart of cygnus' fearsome force we set our course

I'm a disgrace

I was an embarrassment to Hokie Nation. I was one of the empty seats in SEZ. I was able to handle til the people in front of me left and there was nothing to block the wind. I was BRUTAL in the shade. In 12 seasons it's the first game I have left early because I just couldn't handle it anymore. Several layers, foot warmers, ski gloves, several blankets and head coverings just didn't cut it.

Verily, ye speak truth.

When you're winning 10+ games a year and going to BCS bowl games, it's possible to keep a lid on the simmering discontent about the offense among the boosters.

But when you're looking at a 6-6 season where your "signature win" is over Duke at home, it's quite a different matter.

our defense looked great. held them to 217 yards. interested in seeing what bowl we go to.

Defense Played it's NUTS OFF

Thank god the defense came up big when needed. Timely d-line pressure in the latter stages along with exum's big time ability, man he's a stud DB! Offense is totally INEPT! Some of the same old same old with down and distance calls. Losing
yards on plays is one thing but calling those plays time after time week after week is just freaking stupid. about as stupid as coach dream from uvagay land coaching.

The players on defense have improved each week (with the possible exception of Bonner). Regarding Exum, some of my buddies' younger siblings played against him around here in high school ball. 804!

I thought Bonner had terrific game. His only error was the touchdown, and that was a tough spot. Exum was in man to the outside, and his receiver ran a go route. Bonner was lined up man on the slot, and he has to take away the quick slant. You hope that with Rocco throwing to the wide side of the field that he underthrows that ball. He made a good throw into the wind, and the receiver was already moving away when Bonner tried to tackle him. Again, you want him to make the play, but 60% of the time the tackle is missed. The lack of pursuit resulted in a touchdown, but that was the exception to the rule on a day where the defense played a terrific game. Other than a lack of pass rush in the first half, I can't say anything bad about the defense. It is as well has they defended the run all season. Bonner was a big part of that.

Bonner took an absolutely terrible angle on that play.

Had he taken a better angle he would have made the tackle with ease. But as you say, aside from that one play he played a strong game.

I'll take the win

Nothing came easy for this team this year... so I'm not really surprised.

Despite the awful offensive playcalling Tech had, Mike London still managed to be the most inept coach... unless double-icing the kicker before the game winning field goal was his plan all along.

to the heart of cygnus' fearsome force we set our course

we won

just enough for there to be a FIRE SALE on offensive coaches. The defense absolutely held that game as the offense hesitantly struck ever so sparingly

i highly doubt that offensive performance would save any of those coaches, if they were up for review before the game. logan thomas's running ability and defense won that game .. it had nothing to do with coaching

Well, good news....

...probably a lot of UVas offensive staff will be looking for jobs this offseason. Bill Lazor for OC!

It won't. In fact, our offensive ineptitude the past two weeks

... against two of the worst defenses in the ACC should only underscore the fact that wholesale changes are needed on the offensive side of the ball. No, VT doesn't have Oregon-level talent on offense, but at the same time we damn sure have the talent to be performing significantly better than we have been.

haha love the convo going on at thesaber.com

2,919-days, and counting.

Bud fixed defensive problems throughout the season, and boy it's great seeing Tweedy streak across the field (turns out JGW is just fine for ST). Can't say the offense did the same. I was amazed that Scales wasn't utilized in more situations. My 2-yo niece that my VMI dad is teaching the finer points of the game, could run a better offense.

Please, don't let this save our lackluster offensive coaches!

VT played better, but UVA could have easily won with a less inept coach. The fake field goal on 4th & 8 and the terrible use of timeouts are gifts. Really? do you need to freeze the kicker on a 42 yd field goal with the winds blowing harder than Jenna Jameson? Journell's longest converted attempt on the year was 42 yds. And nice job, I'm glad you saved your timeouts to DOUBLE ICE the kicker on a 29 yd field goal from the middle of the field with time expiring.

🦃 🦃 🦃

The fake FG try was a laughably dumb move by London.

He had a great chance to go up by 10 points on the road and instead he tries pulling a rabbit out of his ass on a 4th & long.

I no longer have any worries whatsoever about UVA significantly closing the gap on VT as long as Mike London is there. He makes Al Groh look like Bill Bellichik.

Didn't see the game

But followed it on Twitter. I had a problem with a really bad streaming feed at my in-laws' house, but I was relieved that Hokies won today. Kind of fitting that Journell would be clutch again. He did it in the overtime win over Georgia Tech Bumble Bees, and then did it again today against the Wa-Wa Hoos. Just glad that the Commonwealth Cup stays within the grasp of the Hokies.

The longer the Cup stays with the Hokies, the more they demoralize the Hoos.

Let's go, Hokies! #RISEUPHOKIES

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

Bowlin baby!

To me, the result of this game could have gone either way, but as it's been said - I think we won because our coaches aren't entirely idiotic. The offense started somewhat driving (finally) near the end of the 4th quarter, but not enough to say that we had the upper hand. UVA probably would have moved the ball on their final drive if Rocco hadn't thrown a pick. But, I was baffled at the double icing of the kicker. If London would have called timeouts on the plays prior to the kick, he might have had a minute left on the clock to try to score. But.. he didn't, which was dumb, but good for us.

All in all this game was the same old same old.. shitty offense, great defense. Hopefully change will come around. But as for now, we're goin' BOWLIN' and that's all I care about!

it's fun to make fun of ml and all but the way our d was playing, i dont see them driving the field even with our two minute defense being what it's been this season.

so where will we end up? nashville? memphis? el paso? i kept thinking last night they would announce the bowls tonight because i'm so used to our season ending next week.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

i liked how we had 2nd and 1 twice and ran a qb sneak, without trying anything aggressive. then on 4th and short we go to the shotgun. no i formation, smash them in the mouth - against a team that came in being called soft. cant throw, catch, run or block (pass blocking is decent). i'm not convinced there will be changes, but man do we stink on offense, and we've got some really gifted players.

i'm glad we brought cody journell back so he can fail on the field too.

antone exum has really improved and i'm very happy for him. he's going to be a beast next year, no matter where they put him.

You did manage to see Journell kick the game-winning FG, right?

Doesn't sound like a "failure" to me.

Yes, Exum has improved significantly and our defense should be good next season. We'll need to replace Bruce Taylor and we need some immediate help in the secondary (For one thing, Kyle Fuller isn't fast enough to be playing CB and needs to be moved to either safety or rover.) But we'll have almost the entire D-line back.

But on offense, as you say, it's a complete mess. I'm not exaggerating when I say that we may well have the single most inept offense in all of Division I football. But I believe that there will indeed be significant coaching changes in the off-season on that side of the ball.

If there aren't, a whole lot of people ... including me ... will not be renewing their season tickets or their Hokie Club dues in protest.

no, i missed that part (sarcasm). he's missed makeable FGs all year. 42 yards for a scholarship kicker isnt something that should be missed and without Mike London's help it could have cost the team. given some time to practice and build leg strength, i'm pretty sure either of us could hit that 29 yarder from the middle of the field. he did come through though, so perhaps I should have just thought that rather than type it.

i dont think you're exaggerating at all when you say we have the worst offense in D1 and i dont put that on the players at all.

Oh please. Come on now.

A 42-yarder in sub-freezing temperature with the wind gusting like it was yesterday isn't gonna be a gimmie for anybody.

As to the rest of your post, according to Hokiesports.com Journell is 18-for-22 on his FG attempts this season and is 33-for-35 on his extra points.

That sure doesn't sound to me like "He's missed makeable field goals all year." I doubt you'll find a lot of kickers around college football with better numbers than that.

hey! that is my buddy Greg Papillon in that gif! he is the dude making it rain with imaginary money
