It's Finally Here

Editor's Note: Bumped. This piece got my mind right for Monday night. --Joe

It only comes once a year. The time when hopes are still alive and dreams have not been dashed. Yep, it’s the start of the season. Every team starts with a new slate; zero wins and zero losses. Every fan expects perfection even if they won’t admit it. They want it so bad. They dedicate their lives to this game. The many nights we spend sweating, thinking about the next opponent. The many hours spent dedicated to the team. And why? It’s because you think it might happen. You think maybe one time around, everything will go right. Perfection. And our team will end up holding the crystal ball. You all dream of it. You want it so bad, as much as the players and coaches. You ARE a part of the team. Each game you give it your all. You put it all on the line. You get so nervous during the game, thinking about the possibility of losing. That’s why you get nervous, that’s why it’s fun, knowing you could lose.

Success is difficult; often heartbreak comes with wanting success. But experiencing heartbreak (and enough of it…) makes you enjoy it even more. We’ve ALL been through it. As Virginia Tech fans, we almost expect it now. But after all the bad breaks and calls, (still bitter, ya’ll. He caught that ball…) you deserve something. Everything has to fall the right way for us once, right? Maybe that ball falls into our hands once, maybe that game changing call favors us. Maybe once we’ll get perfection. Who knows, maybe even this is the year. So, give it your all on Monday night. As well as every other game. Keep dreaming. Keep imagining. Because one time we will get it. We will feel what it’s like. When we get that feeling, EVERYTHING we have put into it will be worth it. The season starts Monday. Everything could be crushed in a few hours, or could vault us to a great season. These next 20 or so weeks will take control of you, you will be exhausted by the end. But there is something at the end of the tunnel. Maybe it’s perfection? Or maybe it’s disappointment? The only thing we can control though is our effort. How we help the team. Cheer like you’ve never cheered before (yes, it’s possible). I want this sport to be your life. One time you will get what you deserve. You just have to wait.

The season starts 9.3.2012. Go Hokies!!!
