TKP Community Interview: DuWayne Johnson

2015 verbal commitment DuWayne Johnson answers your questions.

Defensive back DuWayne Johnson verbally committed to the Hokies on February 8th while attending a Virginia Tech junior day event. Today the 6-1, 160 pound H.D. Woodson standout answers your questions.

Your Hudl film shows you can line up at either boundary or field corner positions, though the tape seems to show you close to the line on the boundary side a bit more often. Do you feel more comfortable in one alignment or another, and have Tech's coaches discussed how your skills fit in the secondary scheme? — VTGuitarMan

DuWayne Johnson: I feel comfortable at any side of the field I play on, whether it be boundary or field. I believe Tech is looking at me as more of a field corner. Boundary may decide on how much weight I gain, but they see my skill set as more of a field corner.

Do you mind if we call you The Rock? — Alum07

DuWayne Johnson: The Rock can be a good name for me when I'm coming down laying those big hits and shutting my side of the field down so I don't mind.

From DeAngelo Hall to Kyle Fuller, Virginia Tech has been home to many outstanding defensive backs in recent memory. Is there a current or former DBU player who's tape stands out to you or that you'd like to pattern your own style of play after? And which aspects of their game stand out to you in particular? — petebuddywilson

The Rock: I watched a lot of J Dub, Jimmy Williams, growing up so I try to pattern my game like his. He is a taller, physical corner like myself. I like Brandon Facyson's game a lot too.

What stands out to me about those two guys' game is their ball hawking ability, they just have a nose for the football.

What ultimately made you want to be a Hokie (relationship with recruiter, chance to play, etc)? — vtfly

The Rock: What led me to being a Hokie was definitely Coach Moorehead, Coach Gray, Coach Foster, and Coach Beamer. All those guys being legends at coaching. Being around Virginia Tech so much as a kid watching some of my father's former players play with the Hokies was a factor too. I believe I can play early at Tech and make a big impact. I just feel like I was made for their defense.

Have any of the other schools on your offer list negatively recruited or badmouthed VT? Without getting into specific schools, what are these schools saying about VT? How does that affect your feeling toward VT? — Chazz Michael Michaelzz

The Rock: No other school has ever badmouthed Virginia Tech to me. They always tell me VT has a great program.

Is there a certain number you want to wear with the Hokies? If so, is there any reason/special significance with it? — VB06Hokie

The Rock: No specific number, I would love 5 just because I have worn it so long, but I will play in any number given to me.

What is the most outrageous thing a coach has said or done while recruiting you? — ohherro

The Rock: No coaches have really told me anything out of the ordinary.

Thoughts on playing for coach Grey? What have you heard about playing for him, and what does he bring as a db coach that made you want to play under his instruction? — pbowman69

The Rock: The defensive back coach at my high school, Roland Minor, started at VT at corner and played under Coach Gray for a year. He always tells me he's the real deal and that he's going be tough on me, but that's only going to make me better. As a DB coach, his resume speaks for itself with all his pro guys. I just believe he is the coach that can teach me and push me to my full potential.

Is there any advice you would give to other recruits to help them in their decision? Conversely, did you receive any advice that made the process easier for you? — 2HokiesIn1

The Rock: I would tell other recruits to not just go through the process for pleasure. I know it's cool going to all the college visits in different states and stuff, but you have to decide on a place you see yourself living and playing for 4 years. My older brother went through the process, so all my advice came from him.

What's your dessert of choice: Cake, Pie, Cookies, or Ice Cream?

The Rock: Dessert of choice for me is cake! Can't get enough, LOL.
