For Liverpool fans looks like Karius is still crap

If i'm a sports psychologist i'm calling him tomorrow to offer him a free session.

VB born, class of '14

Watching highlights like this makes me so frustrated with LFC unwillingness to break the bank for a keeper. There are few other glaring positions of need, and I feel like they are hoping they can get one in the January window like they did VVD. My fear is that they'll be too far behind the league leaders to even be in contention for a title by that point in time.

"...I'm getting a little tired of hearing how good everybody else is..." -Coach Fu [This week: 1-0]

There's currently a stand-off happening between supply and demand with keepers. The top keepers are being touted as going for such ridiculous fees as €70-100m such as Alisson, De Gea, Oblak, etc. The clubs don't want to part with them, and the prospective buyers (very understandably) don't want to pay a fee like that for a keeper. So what will realistically happen is that a club will either get desperate enough to meet the higher price tag, the Keeper themselves will be convinced to force the move and probably bring the price to a more reasonable amount, or they will have to look for a 2nd tier level keeper in the meantime until the market normalizes.

a lot of people gave city a ton of flak for the ederson signing but man was he a bargain given the current market. Keepers are getting really expensive really fast

Exactly, and as a Real fan, there's not one bit of me that likes Pep, but even I felt that it wasn't such a bad signing last year given his distribution requirements for his keepers. He needed a keeper who fit his style and he got a young one, perfect situation.

they will have to look for a 2nd tier level keeper in the meantime until the market normalizes

Arsenal did this with Bernd Leno. Not a world beater but a solid signing for the cost and he has a year to push Cech will should hopefully just make both play better.

But like eshiben said, the current prices make Ederson look like a steal. Barca got laughed at when they signed ter Stegen and Bravo in the same window, but that was a tidy piece of business as well because they turned a profit on Bravo who has been spotty at best since they sold him.

It's Danny Ward time...can't get any worse, can it?

I have to imagine that Higuain or Dybala will be on their way out of Juve. Juve are probably more likely to part with Higuain than Dybala due to age etc

Chem PhD '16

Who will sit for Mahrez?

Correy

Rotation/depth. With city playing as many as 3 games a week last year we cant expect the same starting 11 every week. We need players to be able to fill in for sterling and sane and give us more options. Sterling/Silva will be one option sane/mahrez will be the other wing. You could also see him and Bernardo fill in for david Silva too (hes getting up there in age)

Pep brought him on for his flexibility and his different approach to the wing position than sterling

Yarmolenko to West Ham and Guendouzi to Arsenal are official

Chem PhD '16

Emery and Gazidis have made a lot of suggestions that Guendozi is a first team addition, which is interesting.

That'll probably be it for incoming signings. Great summer for Arsenal so far. A Ramsey signature would cap it off nicely, along with some thinning out of the back end of the roster.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Definitely some thinning to do on the back end of the roster as looks to be 32 players in for a 25 man first team squad. 4 goal keepers (expect Ospina out), 11 defenders (expect Jenkinson out, a loan or two for players like Holding/Mavrapanos), 9 midfielders (all well committed unless Ramsey leaves, maybe a loan if Guendouzi isn't a first team addition, maybe a loan for JRA), and 8 forwards (Asano, Akpom, Campbell good as gone, who knows how Emery rates Lucas Perez either).

real question as an American fan whatever happened to zelalem?

Recent article on him, he's in preseason training with their U-23s. Last played on loan with VVV Venlo in the Dutch 2nd division.

The short answer is that development of 16 year olds isn't always linear. He was loaned out to Rangers and then to VVV Venlo like mentioned above, and then tore his ACL last year. I think there was a setback that had prevented a January loan move, and so who knows what he'll be for this upcoming season. I looked and he's 21 now with just a year left on his deal

Want to see how allegri makes higuain and Ronaldo work otherwise I'm failing to see where this was a great move with how old juve are atm but who knows I thought this rumor had no legs and now he's at juve

I mean at the very least will get their money back from marketing. I imagine higuain is on his way out because I dont see them selling dybala. That is an aging core at Juventus though

Looking like Shaqiri to LFC is a matter of when not if...someone please explain how this guy isn't the Albanian Joe Cole (and yes I know he's swiss). We can do so much better...hope I'm wrong on my evaluation. Selfish one-footed players don't get on with Klopp.

Have to think you're incredibly underwhelmed by the window for Liverpool so far this summer?

KopHokie | 1 month 5 days # ^

I can't think of a player less suited to Klopp and his style than (Shaqiri). If Klopp goes for him he's totally lost the plot. Nowhere near the required standard look for someone like West Ham to sign him (no disrespect to West Ham).

Still some smoke about Dembele coming over (the one from Barca), now THAT is quality though I don't see how Dembele's ego would mesh with Klopp, either.

Fekir, Oblak (or Alisson), a quality central defender and maybe Malcom from Bordeaux and that's job done for this summer. Fabinho and Keita are already stellar signings.

Chem PhD '16

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

While I dont like shaqiri either I dont think liverpool should be disappointed with their work in the transfer window. Keita was a huge get and Fabinho is an awesome fit for klopp too. Those are two enormous signings for them (Fabinho >>> Henderson and Keita is the attacking mid theyve been craving for a while), and all things considered Bayern won a treble with shaqiri on the bench (and its not like hes gonna replace mane or salah anytime soon). Liverpool will be A-Ok next year.

So far I'm truly underwhelmed. I can't help but point at ownership and spit in their direction for not wanting to spend the money to take this club to the next level. I feel like after this past campaign we were on the verge of something great. The unwillingness to open the purse for a keeper will keep us right where we usually are, fighting for a top 4 finish. Maybe Klopp has an ace up his sleeve, but after you sell Coutinho for that large sum you should be willing to inject that cashflow back into the club somehow (in addition to VVD).

"...I'm getting a little tired of hearing how good everybody else is..." -Coach Fu [This week: 1-0]

VVD + Fabinho is roughly equal to Coutinho

Chem PhD '16

Long way to go yet

right, that's why I asked "so far". Keita and Fabinho are good signings, but would you be satisfied if the sum total of Pool incomings are those two plus Shaqiri?

Chem PhD '16

I'm not too frustrated at the moment, for what it's worth. Liverpool fans on reddit are losing their mind during the entire world cup but almost all transfers were put on hold. Shaqiri for 13mil is good business for me. So far all the business done during Klopp's tenure has been majority very good and he reportedly rates Shaqiri. IF he doesn't pan out, it won't be hard to sell him for minimal loss.

As for GK that is where I am frustrated. People talking like: Keita, Fabinho, Fekir/Dybala, Shaqiri, , is an actual possibility. I'm not going to argue finances, as no one who is not a part of Liverpool FC organization would know the true answer here. But with planning for the Anfield Road expansion, and continuing to grow the club in a healthy long term picture....dropping that kind of cash just isn't going to happen this window.

I would like to see a GK signing because Karius is clearly still shocked from the final, and MIgs wants first team action. But who is available that is going to be a true improvement and isn't going to cost us enormously. Word has it that Klopp likes Ward's ability but his attitude has been lacking until now. It could all be smoke and mirrors.

For all those fans worried, Klopp took a woeful squad to a Europa league final--this squad is head and shoulders better and should be just fine staying top four this season, if not more. Karius with VVD/Lovren had some of the best defensive statistics last year (i.e. not all down to the GK), so people thinking the season is over before it has started is unfortunate.

>>> Short, selfish one-footed players don't get on with Klopp.

This times 1000x, for the win Alex. Shaquiri's body language alone makes me want to kick the sh** out of him. And he's just not that good. Lots of projecting his inadequacies onto his teammates.

Shoulda bought Shakira with a K not a Q.

Shaqiri deal complete once medical is passed...13.75million pound sterling

Jean Seri to Fulham has to be a hell of a steal for them all I had heard was he was looking likely to go to arsenal or chelsea with the rumors saying he was in London for a transfer I had no Idea that hed go to fulham though

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Very solid midfield. Seri, Cariney and McDonald.

Always choose joy.

Clement Lenglet to Barca from Sevilla, 35m euros. Ospina looks set to join Boca Juniors for $8m

Hazard sounding like he's gone which what would be I'd assume to real Madrid maybe Barca but I feel Madrid to be the natural move

Also am I the only one wondering if real Madrid could possibly use bale as a lure to get kane from Tottenham if they really want him?

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Reliable RM sources have suggested Kane is not in Madrid's plans and nobody wants to deal with Levy over a player/coach, especially one with a fresh contract (timing can be a real bitch eh, Pochettino). I do think Hazard is a real possibility for Real though.

His wife's preference is London but apparently he's convinced her. Deal may be done by the end of this week. Fingers crossed...however, 67m pounds sterling is a lot for a player that gave up 7 goals to us in two games.

That money is a lot for any GK IMO. However everyone in the universe knows how badly you need one right now so there was probably no way around this. He's better than Karius but I don't think this would be a very good deal for you overall.

I'm just over here hoping Bernd Leno can revive his form from a couple years ago.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

best way I have seen it put: think of it as Salah for 67m and Alisson for 39m. Makes a ton more sense and feels a lot better lol

The chess pieces are being moved around: looks like Danny Ward is off to Leicester for 10m, Karius will serve as Alisson's backup and no word on Mignolet. Surely, Mignolet will have to find a new club. Alisson to join the squad once LFC return from the ICC in America.

Honestly after seeing Karius in preseason this would be my hope:

Alisson with Mignolet as back-up
Karius loaned out to someone...anyone...to help build confidence back up.

MIgnolet has a silly contract which means we won't be able to sell him for much even though he is worth more than Ward. Karius would be easy to sell, strictly from a contractual standpoint, but who in this moment would pay more than 10m for him?

Having a confidence-lacking Karius as a back up scares me. At least when Migs comes off the bench we know exactly what to expect: above average keeping, one howler every few games, and that is at a minimum...sometimes he goes world beater on us and we wonder why he can't just do that every game.

But counter point is that karius is a sweeper-keeper like Klopp likes and Mignolet is not...so idk...backup GK is causing me as much stress as finding a starting GK.

And yeah I know I defended Karius but that was predicated on him coming back into the preseaon being commanding and renewed. Instead he looks lost and shaken. Can't have that.

67m is no chump change indeed! CL football will always outweigh EL football. I'm hoping that is what closes the deal, he seems pretty set on Liverpool, twitter rumors say his talk with Klopp went really well too. I think this pretty much puts us out of the Fekir race though.

"...I'm getting a little tired of hearing how good everybody else is..." -Coach Fu [This week: 1-0]

Tier 1 journos reporting he is on a plane and already agreed to terms.

Reported €75m fee for Alisson to Liverpool by the most reliable Italian sources. Weird situation because Liverpool is getting a fantastic, potentially very long term keeper, but is getting completely fleeced at the same time.

Clearly Roma is trying to make some money back from that Salah transfer fleece.

"...I'm getting a little tired of hearing how good everybody else is..." -Coach Fu [This week: 1-0]

^^^
Think if im Liverpool I wouldnt fuss about it to much they absolutely robbed Roma of Salah in hindsight if I were them Id be happy to help them out a little all while getting a very good gk

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I said it above but if you think Salah for 67m and Alisson for 39m it feels a bit more sensible. And if you combine the two, 106m for the two players isn't bad at all in this market. Especially when one Coutinho goes for 142m

I agree it's overall good business in perspective, but it's the highest ever GK fee, which was forced by multiple circumstances.

Look at how much more stability they got defensively after making the most expensive transfer for a defender last year. A world class gk can make all the difference in tight games, just look at how many times De Gea kept United in tight games when they were playing like shite. It's a hefty fee, but I'm all for it. The Reds have made huge profits on Suarez, Sterling and Coutinho transfers and as others have pointed out made some amazing bargain buys, you've got to balance that out by splashing some cash.

Agreed that the fee makes it worth it if he comes anywhere near De Gea levels. The thing is with Liverpool is they were nearly bankrupted about 10 years ago and hit rock bottom with Roy Hodgson and were in a relegation battle at one point. They had didn't have to sell Suarez, Sterling, or Coutinho except that all three made it impossible to stay. They are finally at a financial place (main stand expansion, deep Europa and UCl campaigns) where they no longer have to worry as much about net spend. The coutinho sale, UCL money were huge helps to this window. I am happy if business ended now but rumors are we are still in for Fekir which is shocking.

I think it will likely be worth the money in the long run, especially if they hold onto him for 8+ years or so.

The best part about it is that Chelsea won't get him. Hopefully they're unable to properly replace Courtois.

My main hope is that Arsenal can get back into UCL money this season, I want Chelsea to fall off a cliff right now.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Sarri plays a very appealing and extremely aesthetic style. It'll be interesting to see how Chelsea fares next season, especially with a full focus on the PL without CL football. Though I think they might lose both Courtois and Hazard, but it's not set in stone.

Is it too much to ask that Chelsea are forced to resign Petr Cech or Pickford, or even Mignolet??

I'll straight swap Cech for Giroud right now. It doesn't make the most sense for us but the heart wants what it wants.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Is Pickford overrated after his World Cup run?

If only stupid Brazil could have won the world cup we could have gotten 100 million for Alisson!! (i'm a Roma fan)

No way! Another Hokie and Roma fan... Didn't think I would see the day.

Ayyyyy awesome! I've seen a couple Roma jerseys around campus the past two years but yeah we're certainly few and far between

I called it in 2014, and I said it again this year, and I will continue to say this. If Brazil persist with Neymar being the focal point, they will never win a world cup with him on the roster. He is too selfish, too weak, and a drama queen on the field. Firmino, for instance, performed better than Jesus in every minute he played which also happened to be substantially less than Jesus...but the rumor is that Neymar really doesn't like him and so he doesn't get playing time. The WC is scheduled such that the team that has the combination of talent and team play and gels the quickest has the best chance. That will never be Brazil with Neymar.

I have a coworker who spent the entire WC lamenting the "old" brazil...a selfless, creative, beautiful team from south america taking down the european giants. He loathes more than anything watching Brazil now.

I agree with you on Neymar but disagree to an extent on Jesus' contributions. A lot of his off the ball movement is what makes him so good, sure he didnt do a ton of scoring but he setup neymar numerous times. He also held position incredibly well. Coming back to point #1 the issue with the team isnt Jesus, did he blow anyone away? no. Is he the reason brazil went home? no. The issue is Neymar is the total focal point of an offense on a team that is not setup to be that way. He wants to be ronaldinho and he just isnt.

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

I'm not arguing Jesus was the reason they were poor. But every attribute of his you just listed is an attribute Firmino also has in spades. I watched a few brazil games and they always looked fundamentally more dangerous with Firmino on the pitch. I agree the issue is Neymar--100%. I was just pointing out Jesus being on the pitch when they looked better with Firmino was another Neymar thing.

This...everyone says Salah this and Mane that but it's really Firmino that makes Liverpool tick. He's by far our most important player.

YES, so true!!

Kop - I'm going to see Liverpool v Dortmund on Sunday in Charlotte with my son (8 yr old). It'll be the first live game for either of us. He's a big Liverpool fan, so we're both pretty excited.

Hokie fan | W&M grad

Could you think that this might be because he came on as a late substitute and the other team's defense might be absolutely gassed? I just really hate that Jesus has gotten a lot of the flak lately because when they let him run loose like city has hes an incredible striker. I really think hes being reigned in right now and it wouldn't matter if freaking prime louis suarez was on the field, the brazil gameplan would be give neymar the ball. I can name at least twice in the world cup where Jesus had the ball with a look on frame and dished it to neymar. City Jesus doesn't do that, which forces me to believe this is a coach/neymar thing

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

Eck. I feel like you're attacking me. I'm not bashing Jesus at all, truly, I just like Firmino; I thought he was that gel guy that a team full of superstars needed, and the on the field results seemed to support that. The running out of gas could definitely be part of it, which is why I was really hoping he would have gotten a chance to start, but unfortunately we'll never know the answer to that one.

Hokie fan | W&M grad

Just saw that Oxlade-Chamberlain will miss most of this coming season to injury.
