Midseason TKPC update before the Hokies embark on the final stretch of the 2017 football season.

[Mark Umansky]

Well hello there, The Key Play. You're looking lovely early this morning.

This is your irregularly scheduled update from the The Key Players Club. It's the short and sweet edition.

TKPC grew by 66 members in September 2017. That tied February 2016 (month TKPC debuted) for the second-most new members in a month (No. 1 was August 2016). 💪

However, 16 of the 115 folks who joined in August 2016 did not renew their membership a year later. And wait for it... a bit of meta. A few actively canceled, but the overwhelming majority had their membership lapse because of invalid payment information due to an address change, expired, or canceled card. What puzzles me is two emails with instructions for how to cancel are automatically sent prior to a member's renewal date. None of the aforementioned former, latter TKPC members (that's a mouthful) requested a cancelation, rather it happened as a byproduct of multiple payment fails. 🤔

Moving along.

The overall membership chart continues to trend up.

TKPC helped fund a new server, and standing up Beefy was quite the personal endeavor, but it'll be worth it in the long run.

Finally, if you value being able to browse to TKP each day to read original content and/or interact with the best community of Hokies, then please consider joining The Key Players Club.

Thanks for the update, Joe.

Count me as one of the 66 in September of this year. This is the only site I regularly come to for Hokie Sports info.

Keep up the good work and thanks for the great content and laughs!

DILLY DILLY!

Best $7 I spent this month...and last month...and the month before...

Remember: ONLY $7 a mo. Less expensive than an overpriced cup of crappy Starbucks coffee.

DO IT

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

I'm buying rails when we hit 1000. I don't even like rails.

I would join twice if I could.

You finally talked me into it. I've been taking advantage too long.

Just signed up!

I said it before and I'll say it again. This place is special. Not only for the in depth Hokie analysis, but for the unique OT threads as well! This site has been one of my go-to's for incliment weather, soccer discussion, and pop-culture (mostly GoT and Stanger Things) debate. You can't find another site on the web that will deliver all of this in one place. Bravo TKP Staff, and bravo TKPCers for your commitment to the cause!

If you're still on the fence, stop thinking, just do it.

Go Hokies

Just think you might be the person who gets TKP our own reporter for Hokie events. Your joining might make all the difference. Also great content like a Bill Roth AMA is content no one else is going to have.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Not sure when, but I promise...

Joe, would it be possible to make the $84 the minimum subscription fee with the opportunity for a member to set his/her own monthly equivalent, so long as it meets the $84? Some people may join for the $84 (7/mo), but I wouldn't mind paying a nice round $120 to bring it to $10 a month. Or would a separate donation be easier to handle?

I believe this has been asked and answered before. I'd link to a specific post but I'm on mobile and lazy. The short answer is no. The longer, but still short is that having monthly payments presents extra problems for budgeting items like paying a beat reporter. Say a bunch of people are monthly and you agree to hire a reporter for the next year. Then a bunch of monthly subscribers cancel. Suddenly there is no money coming in to pay the salary you promised and someone is getting screwed. Currently, Joe knows how much money he has...because he has it and isn't expecting the cash flow to continue. Maybe if we were a bigger site monthly wouldn't cause the same headaches, but the potential for relatively huge shortfalls is too much.

To be fair, this is how I remember the conversation going. Joe or VTGM could probably give a better answer.

My understanding is that the person isn't asking for a monthly donation structure, just asking if possible to donate more than the $84 in a lump sum.

I may be mistaken however.

This is what I was asking. ^

Not a monthly subscription, but the ability to give in excess of the minimum. Much like the Hokie Club says "donate a minimum of $100, but please give much much more if you're able."

Give me 7 more years and I will gladly be the beat reporter for the low low salary of $0.00/mo (**gritting through teeth** must... finish... military... career... can't... quit... now...).

There used to be a paypal donation link. I am not sure if that still exists or not.

IIRC, there were two major reasons for the annual subsciption:

  1. Keep the code as simple as possible
  2. The ultimate goal of TKPC is to hire a beat writer. You can't guarentee a beat writer a full year of pay if revenue could vary by month

Allowing a user to arbitrarily set an amount is a bit tricky at the moment. The Key Players Club is mapped to a set plan ($84 billed annually). I do not want to allow users to create their own custom plans on the fly, because it'll make a mess of the back-end. However, I might be able to accomplish by having some predetermined bonus levels of financial support. It's something I will mull over. I don't know what the demand would be.

Although, a few TKPCers have reached out and made some over-the-top one-time payments that have blown me out of the water.

I'd pay more than $84 yearly. So I guess I'd count towards a person willing to pay on a bonus plan.

Look at that retention!

If you are a newly hired graduate, it's time to pony up and support the best VT football coverage there is.

Welcome aboard and congrats on the new job man!

"These people are losing their minds!"

It's really encouraging.

We are one person away from 600! Who is going to be the one to push us over that hump?

Just commenting to see if I still got that key. Since moving to Uganda I can't actually remember the last time I saw an email about payment. And I don't remember which card I used to set it up or if it'll still work

Definitely worth the money. This is by far the best VT Football site.

Created an account this AM just to join KPC. Figured it was about time. You all are great, and it was the least I could do.

C'mon Hokies... join if you haven't already- TKP needs and deserves your support.

Clearly ESPN is rigging the TKPC membership numbers. Trying to dilute our influence.

Wait, I thought ESPN's drunk brother rigged it. I'm so confused.

I'm still trying to figure out what the key I got in the mail goes to. I've tried every lock on campus to no avail. Works great for popping open a Bell's Two-Hearted though.

Just curious, is there any kind of swag incentive for the membership renewal or is the bottle opener (which is awesome) the one time swagcentive?

When you get to 25 years you get an autographed piece of Beefy signed by Joe, French and Guitar Man. In addition you get a keg from Egbert and one day of weather of your choosing from Eshiben.

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

I offered to send renewal folks samples of my chest hair, but apparently it violates postal law.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Well, postal law and any number of state and local ordinances. Oh yeah, and common decency.

There's nothing set in stone yet, but I am conceptualizing more benefits for TKPC.
