Chris Clarke to Miss the Remainder of Buzzketball Season with an ACL Tear

Hokies sensational sophomore suffered a season-ending injury in marquee win over Virginia.

Virginia Tech head men's basketball coach Buzz Williams has announced that an MRI performed on Chris Clarke indicates a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament in the left knee and surgery will be required.

The Virginia Tech sports medicine department will schedule surgery in the coming days, to be performed by team orthopedist Dr. Christofer Catterson. There is no timetable for recovery, but Clarke will miss the remainder of the season.

"Our hearts hurt for Chris," Williams said. "He has worked really hard to become an outstanding player and an incredibly important teammate to what we are trying to build. I am confident that he will turn this situation into good and return next year an even better player, better student and better person."

Clarke, a sophomore from Virginia Beach, Virginia, suffered the injury in the second half of the Hokies' 80-78 double overtime victory over No. 12 Virginia on Sunday night in Cassell Coliseum. He leads the team in rebounding at 7.3 rebounds per game and is fourth on the team in scoring, at 11.4 points per game. He leads the team in steals with 30 and is second on the team in assists, with 79.

Keep calm, Gobble on

That is the only word that comes to mind

Ugh. I feel awful for him.

poor kid. hopefully he can rehab it well.

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

Losing Blackshear, Hamilton, and Clarke in one year is killer. Program is still headed in the right direction and barring a magical run obviously this wasn't our year. With the type of athlete and person Clarke is I have no doubt he'll be back and better than before. The ACC should fear having him and Nickeil Alexander-Walker in the same lineup.

Damn. Wish him well in his recovery.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

We are officially dealing with a fucking samsquanch!

Hope he comes back strong, but not too fast. Don't want any reinjury derailing his career.

Damn this is rough.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

God damn it. I guess we're down to seven scholarship players in the rotation.

We need Outlaw to step the fuck up.

He had some bad moments in the LOLUVA game, but I remember one play in particular where Outlaw did step up, big time! Getting more minutes will hopefully give home more confidence, and he will start draining 3's big league.

I love Clarke and I hope he returns with the same explosiveness. He is fun to watch, and by all accounts a great guy.

Fuck. I hope he doesn't have to miss a ton of time next season too.

VB born, class of '14

Realistically, I want him to miss all of next year in a redshirt. ACL injuries are a lot harder for basketball players to come back from than football players. Take your time and rehab it slow and strong. There are too many basketball players that rushed it and never fully recover from ACL's.

I was taking a look at the roster for next year without Clarke and it still looks pretty deep without him.

Even more exciting is that the only seniors next year are Bibbs, Wilson and Outlaw. 2018-2019 could be a really good year if Clarke comes back as a r-Jr then.

EDIT: Forgot Alexander-Walker... anyone want to try to predict our starting 5? The depth at guard is pretty strong.

Don't forget about our 5-star freshman, Alexander-Walker!

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

The problem is at the 4-spot. Buzz refuses to play Sy with LeDay now (we'll see how that holds up the last 6+ games), so he's not going to play Sy with KJB. That makes Sy and KJB a rotation at the 5. Maybe Fullard can fill in for a few minutes, but I wouldn't bank on that.

At the 4, Clarke made the most sense to keep those minutes. Now, you either need to get 20+ mins out of Outlaw (we'll see how that goes this year), have faith in what LeDay2 and/or Horne can produce or play 4 guards. There could be a lot of Rob-Hill-NAW-Bibbs on the floor. Again, that might be the strategy the rest of this year with Rob-Allen-Hill-Bibbs with LeDay/Sy rotating in at 5.

Clarke is just such an important player for what Buzz wants to do. His Point-Forward transition game, his distribution in the spread offense, stretching the other teams 4 out on the perimeter. A very difficult player to replace in Buzz's system. Maybe Outlaw is ready to fill in. He needs to make 3's to offset what Clarke's minutes usually produced in rebounds and transition.

A good opportunity next year for S Leday at the point forward spot if Clarke is RS. Check out his JC tape. He has the handle and vision to do it. Some of his vid looks like Clarke clone

I trust our people to know when the right time to come back is. I doubt they have an accuracte time frame right now though.

Definitely, and every athlete has a different recovery time. But assuming a 12 month recovery (still standard I think) that would put him back for 6 regular season games next year. Take the year off.

I love the energy and athleticism that Chris Clarke puts into his game. I want him to have that same game (with a better jump shot) when he gets back.

I have seen the struggles E.C. Matthews (URI) has had coming back from an ACL tear. A year plus, he is still hobbling around on the court with a knee brace. His once promising NBA level career has been killed. I just want the player to be alright.

I won't be shocked if he redshirts next year, I also wouldn't be shocked if he comes back before conference play next year. The whole point is the 12 month assumption isn't a good one to make yet. Also, there's more than recovery time at play here. If he tells Buzz he's not planning on staying for a 5th season I wouldn't mind adding Clarke late down the stretch before we go dancing.

Heart breaks for him. This really stinks. Never seen a team with more historic bad luck than VT basketball.

"It might be dark outside, but it's LeDay in here." - Jay Bilas

I guess this hurts his chances of getting on the football field this fall too

Tyrod did it, Mikey!

Id bet the house he doesn't play next season

12 month recovery sounds realistic. Bet he redshirts.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

I think we see him in the 2nd semester. ACL recoveries are starting to trend shorter

I think it really depends on a lot of things, how the team's doing, how Chris feels, what Chris and his family want. I think Blacksheer has shown that Buzz will absolutely do what's best for the kid vs the team (the way it should be).

Isn't ACL usually 8 months? Achilles is generally the one that knocks you out a full year

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

Right, but 8 months puts him back around November, which means he probably has missed boot camp + a summer/fall of workouts with the team. Buzz is a long term guy, and we should be 9 deep potentially next year without Clark (assuming whatever is up with Pig isn't long term). Clark is a game changer, but Buzz won't risk his future for short term gain.

I'm sure he can still work out his upper body, and after 5 months or so he can find some cardio activities that don't risk stressing the knee to keep in shape. The only major concern is rehabbing the knee to regain the strength in it, to avoid reinjuring it.

6 months until back to full activity, but really 9 months until you should push it. when they say full activity you still feel totally uncomfortable on it.

But you are looking at 18-24 months for a complete recovery from the injury until the person/player really begins to have trust in that joint again. Most pro athletes will go out and do ok 12 months after the injury but most will tell you that the next season is when they really feel like they are back to normal. Another reason it's best to redshirt in this situation.

Didn't suggest otherwise. Just stating the protocol that dr's use as I'm going through it myself right now. I think 18-24 months is slightly exaggerated though. I think it would be in his best interest to redshirt well based on the timeline of his injury, but everyone heals/rehabs differently and maybe after 9 months he trusts his knee again.

So does Blackshear have his redshirt taken off? I know it's super late in the season but...

I think we start giving Galloway ~5 minutes per game and hope for the best. I highly doubt Buzz goes back on his promise to KBJ and his folks to redshirt him.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Right thing for the player comes before right thing for the team with Buzz. He has made that clear in multiple interviews. I for one am glad to see him back it up when things got tough.

fuck. fuuuuck

First thing I thought is vertical explosion. I hope he takes his time rehabbing and works his way back the right way. Coming back too soon as a basketball player can really effect his overall explosion when making a basketball move.

Best of luck Clarke

That's just mean.

If you're reading the above post and thinking, "is this guy serious?!?," you can safely assume I'm not.

realistically, he will probably redshirt next year.

Pretty devastating for Clarke personally. It's a tough injury for a guy with his kind of explosiveness to come back from, but not necessarily unheard of.

Adrian Petersons recovery was certainly part superhuman, but recovery times are shorter and it depends on the person and severity.

Felt as much last night when I saw it but it still sucks to see that its official. Here's to hoping he can make a full and speedy recovery.

Looking at this team and finishing out the season, it's going to be difficult to close out the regular season and try to get an NCAA tournament birth. I wouldn't be shocked at all if goes 1-5 or 2-4. It's possible if everyone steps up in a big way that we come out ok but Clarke is just so talented that you can't really replace him. Even if guys play harder, the rotation is going to be so short now. That's going to catch up with guys and at some point, you can't overcome it. I wonder if they'd consider burning Wilson's redshirt. Personally I don't see him playing much next year anyway but he could give some valuable minutes to us right now. He'd be the perfect guy to hand the ball to as he's experienced and makes all the hustle plays. That could be really useful in saving some minutes for some guys

I wondered why Wilson isn't playing. Playing him if redshirting was the plan is a tough call. Even if he doesn't play a lot next year his experience will still be great to have on the team after losing Allen and LeDay. Personally, I think we have to hope Donlon can play 5-10 minutes a game with the sole purpose of fighting for rebounds and not allowing any easy baskets inside. It's almost necessary to protect Sy from foul trouble now that he will have to play more minutes.

My thoughts exactly. Donlan could fill in nicely. Speedy recovery Chris, we will miss you!!

US Navy Vet

Do we know whether Donlon can fill 5 minutes a game? I have seen the team play a lot this year but have only seen Donlon come in once. Galloway seems to be more capable when he is in there so I definitely would expect his minutes to go up but not sure about Donlon. Hopefully we can get 8-10 minutes out of the 2 of them combined. Sy and LeDay getting in foul trouble will be the bigger concern.

I have questioned all year why Donlon wasn't getting more minutes. I understand he is a walk on but he is 6'9 and seems to be in the best shape of his life thanks to our new S&C coach Buzz brought in. He isn't the fastest but every game I have seen him in he has a decent midrange jump shot, has the knack for rebounding along with the body to do it. Maybe it's just been so he doesn't take minutes from Scholarship guys but I for one will be excited to see him get some run if it ends up being the case.

Yeah, you're right. It's tough but I'd still rather burn the shirt this year. It's not like we'll be lacking experience next year. I look at Wilson and think he'll basically be in the exact same scenario a year from now; not as good as the scholarship guys, but better than the walk ons. He'd be more of a "break glass in case of emergency" type of player. Except we actually have that emergency right now. A tournament spot is still possible if everyone can collectively raise their level of play to mitigate Clarke's absence. I'd rather entrust that to players with experience than guys like Donlon and Galloway. (Donlon is probably gonna have to play some regardless, especially if Sy stays hobbled) It's no disrespect to them, it just is what it is. Wilson is a better player. Over the course of an entire season (next year), I don't think Wilson is the type of player to make a big impact on the overall success so I don't see much value in keeping him sitting this year. But in this specific scenario , where much of the season's work is already done, I think he's just good enough to get us to the finish line. A big goal is right at our finger tips. Go for it now. Play for today, not for tomorrow.

I think you are right about the talent level; but I don't think Wilson plays here next year. He graduates and plays somewhere else as a grad transfer. If I were Buzz, I would give him the choice of whether he wanted to play his last year on an NCAA tournament team; or as a starter/contributor at another program that probably does not have the talent VT has.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

This again comes down to whats best for the player over the team decision and Buzz has made it clear how he views that. How fair is it to say to Wilson, you have to burn your redshirt to play the six remaining regular season games, maybe one or two ACC Tourney games, and then one or two tournament games, likelihood of 10 or less overall games compared to being able to go out for a full season that he is fullly prepared for compared to coming into this season after missing the majority of the season.

Good luck with your surgery Chris...I hope you have a full recovery.

first, that sucks balls. speedy recovery Chris!

secondly, is this an official media release from VT athletics on TKP? or did someone get really clever with their username?

Call me a pessimist, or (dare I say it) a debbie downer....but I have a hard time seeing us win another game this year without CC. Which sucks, because last summer I was legitimately more excited about Buzzketball than football. Shows you how much I know.

But I'm a beard. Imagine how silly I'd feel if I were human

I mean the team did just come back from a deficit against one of the better teams in the country without CC during that entire stretch plus two OTS....

Not like we were playing great basketball either for a lot of that period.

Nah, we'll win at least a couple more. Allen and LeDay will not be denied at least being in the tourney conversation.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

I still think we can pick up 2 more wins. We really will live and die by the 3 now. A hot shooting night and we can grab a win.

2 more wins puts us at 19-12 (8-10) which I imagine would be on the bubble.

I've been saying that 9-9 is good enough for us to sneak in and 8-10 would have us on the bubble for over a month, but every time I do everyone responds with some version of "no way, not possible". And yet, as of right now Miami (16-8, 6-6), Syracuse (16-11, 8-6), Wake Forest (15-10, 6-7), Georgia Tech (14-10, 6-6), Pittsburgh (14-11, 3-9), and Clemson (13-11, 3-9) are all pretty close to the bubble in at least one major publication. 9-9 should definitely get us in, and going 3-3 down the stretch is very realistic with 4 games against these aforementioned "bubble teams" (1 away, 3 home), and an away game against BC. Beat BC, split the 4 games against "bubble teams", and we should be in the tournament.

I keep getting shocked when I hear Pitt and Clemson getting mentioned. They have horrible records and should not even be considered for the dance at present. IMHO, the both would need to win out (not happening) and do well in the tourney to have a shot.

VT needs to take care of business, and now they'll be needing to do that without Chris Clarke.

So I'll be on the edge of my seat.

I think someone at 7-11 will get in from the ACC.

I think Pitt and Clemson would, and I'd go so far as to say that Pitt would even have a small chance at 6-12 if they steal a good win in the ACCCT. Even as ridiculous as that sounds right now.

I don't think it'll happen. In fact, I'd be surprised if Pitt can manage to go 3-3 down the stretch, or if Clemson went 4-2 down the stretch.

We basically just beat UVa without him, so I think we'll be ok. We probably won't pick up any more upsets, but there are games we should still win, and now its going to force the rest of the team to step up on an individual basis. We have quality kids who know how to ball, so now is the time for them to prove it.

I actually think the next few weeks could be a blessing in disguise for us. It'll help set the tone for next year.

That was my fear as soon as I saw how he landed.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Not when he landed for me, but when he was basically carried to the locker room.

Just figured id put this out there, but I saw chris clarke playing pickup the other night in McComas. He looked pretty good. Looked good shooting, making a ton of threes and threw one off the backboard to himself.

Great news. On the heels of the Outlaw injury, we're going to need everything we can out of Clarke. Hopefully KJ is 100% too as he's has plenty of time to heal up. I know McComas talent may not be the same as other ACC teams (still better than War) but I like our chances if Clarke developed a shooting game at the 4 with KJ back at the 5

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

Well now that Allen is gone, he doesn't have his off the backboard passing friend to help him practice anymore. Have to still be able to rub in big wins to Coach Ks face again next year.

Thanks for the good news. I was just wondering, isn't this a little early playing pick up games? Its only been close to 7 months. ACL injuries and the recoveries are so weird, Im sure it is possible but guys who come back too early always seem to never recover back to their old form.

This happened in Feb. Just for reference, Exum tore his in January and wasn't cleared to play until October and didn't return for another 3 weeks.

Held my breath while scrolling through the comments.

Good news to hear he looks good. Quick sigh of relief. Now back to holding my breath until the season starts and the odds of a pick-up game injury go down.

Kinda cool side mother was getting PT in Virginia Beach this Summer, and happened to be there frequently with a certain athlete. She doesn't follow Hokie BBall, so she was pretty clueless but strikes up some conversations from time to time....well at some point he mentioned he played college basketball. Naturally she asked where, and when he responded VT, she told him both of her sons graduated from there. Of course it was none other than Chris Clarke. He's definitely my favorite current Hokies, and I told her to wish him a speedy recovery! She had nothing but great things to say about him personally, except that she wondered what he was doing with his hair!! Ha!
