Fifth Annual TKP Tailgate to Benefit Women's Resource Center of NRV

Let's multitask TKPers — countdown to kickoff and raise some money.

You're invited!

The TKP tailgate turns five this Saturday. The 2018 edition is on the books ahead of Hokies' showdown against the Fighting Irish. Since its inception the tailgate has been an excuse to party, meet other Hokies and TKPers, plus raise money to benefit a great cause — the Women's Resource Center of the New River Valley. The WRC's charge is to provide free and confidential services for sexual and domestic violence victims in the New River Valley.

As a group last year TKPers raised $959. That's impressive, but the goal this year is to shatter quadruple digits.

We're setting up shop in Lot 18. The same location as previous years — the corner by the guard rail and the creek. Look to the sky for the TKP flag flying. Or check out this handy map.

Some grilled food will be provided, but it's bound to run out. If you're planning on staying for a while, please bring something to contribute and share; whether that's food, snacks, drinks, or tailgating supplies (chairs, trash bags, plastic cups, cornhole, side tables, plasticware, etc...). The festivities begin at noon, and will wrap up around 6:30 PM. Expect a fully dipped time that may or may not include a piñata. Please drop a note in the comments if you plan on attending and what you're bringing.

Most importantly, it's not just a banging party, but a charity event. If you plan to come by at all, even to say hello for a minute, you must bring $5 or more in cash or gift cards (Kroger or Wal-Mart preferred). That bumps to $10 if you have a real world job. Contributions will benefit the WRC. The Women's Resource Center is a federally recognized 501(c)3 and Tammy Pennington (finance AT wrcnrv [DOT] org) would be happy to provide whatever written tax documentation is requested.

*For full disclosure, The Key Play is not associated with The Women's Resource Center. Your donations will be made directly to The Women's Resource Center and won't pass through The Key Play \ Orange and Maroon Media, LLC.

Please tailgate responsibly.

Y'all need any Yuengling?

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Quality post.

Just went to the Yuengling Brewery two weeks ago and met Dick Yuengling (pictured above) cool dude and cool brewery, also Yuengling Lager best domestic beer don't at me.

I think just recently we finally finished all the Yuengling that showed up a the Ohio State tailgate. I have nothing against Yuengling actually, but damn was there a mountain of it.

If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous! With treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross. But it's not for the timid...

Given that it seems like beer shows up in abundance, would it be better to bring 4 cases of water, to donate (we'd bring snack food too)?

Sure! Water is always needed. The main focus is donations. We really want to stack it up this year.

If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous! With treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross. But it's not for the timid...

We'll have cash for donations too.

We're coming from Atlanta and not bringing grills, etc, so we can't do much to prepare food. As I was reading this thread, it dawned on me that bottled water is ALWAYS in short supply (if you are tailgating on limited income, water tends to be last on the list).

Like I mentioned in the 10+ Hours of Tailgating thread, HokieEnginerd and I are bringing the following:
HE is going to be smoking ribs and a chicken
Smoked salsa and chips
Pumpkin Dip
Caramel Apple Sangria
FlippinHokie's cinnamon rolls that she asked me to keep in my freezer

2 time Longwood grad married to a Hokie.

someone should @Urban Meyer and ask him to contribute...too soon?

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

And I should have wrote in the original post, outside of coordinating with the WRC and buying copious amounts of Yuengling, I do very little for this tailgate. The crew in Lot 18 which has grown significantly over the years is responsible for its actual execution. Thank y'all for that.

Best lot there is! It's funny how it has grown to what it has. I was actually the last person to start tailgating with the original group that started this whole thing. I knew one out of all of them when I first was invited over. It has just kept growing sense. TKP connections being a major part of it in recent years.

If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous! With treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross. But it's not for the timid...

We will be there (party of three). We're coming from Atlanta, so we won't have the full tailgate regalia, so we'll bring snacks & beer bottled water.

I won't be able to make it down to Blacksburg this weekend, but is there a way to donate online for this? I loved supporting and fundraising for the Women's Resource Center when I was in school and want to contribute more now that I have a real-person job.

Nailed it. For those of you who can't make it but are sending cash the WRC's way, good on you. If you want your contribution to be included in TKP's group total add a note in the "Buyer's Instructions" field that it's for TKP.

I will be there with my wife and like 2 other friends (and TKPers). I will coordinate with them about what we will bring and will post here when I know for sure. Looking forward to seeing you all!

We will be there in the early afternoon, with veggies and hummus, pumpkin crisp, and some beers to share.

I am planning on stopping by for a little. Will probably bring some beer and/or some burgers.

We are really looking forward to seeing everyone this year, yall!
As always, we will have the TV/Satellite set up for watching games throughout the day. I will have a set of cornhole boards; if there are lots of people looking to play then more sets may not be a bad idea. We should have a couple of extra tables this time, so if you are bringing something to share I think table space will not be an issue. There will be plenty to eat and drink; Frank is bringing the pizza oven again this year and we will be cranking those out for lunch and throughout the day. Adam and Heather have plans for large quantities of smoked meats, just follow the smells if you get lost. CBRdog and our other group under the tree at the other end of the guardrail are going to join in as well! There will be beer, but we urge you to bring something you enjoy drinking. I will be bringing some Center of the Universe brews to share (along with the delicious, seasonal favorite: Busch Light). Passing around craft beers and home-brews has become a bit of a tradition now, so if you have a favorite you want to show off that is encouraged (I love IPA's).
The one thing we really do not have in quantity is chairs and extra ice/cooler space. If you have things that need to be kept cold you may need to bring your own cooler.
The guardrail spots will be gone quick, but the lot is huge so there will be room to park. We will be happy to help you unload before you go find a spot. If you do not have a pass for the lot but still want to come by, there are plenty of options close by, and the circle across the street from the guardrail makes a great dropoff zone. The commuter lot, golf course, and along the road farther down Smithfield Drive are options for close by parking. Uber is also a fantastic option and one I have used many times myself.

If anyone has any questions at all, please feel free to contact me! wasknick at gmail

I can bring a set of boards.

Driving up from Charleston and I am sorely tempted to bring the boards that my wife custom painted for us to show off. The only issue is that one is a VT board and one is an Auburn board.

Show those boards off - Bring 'em. Like Wasknick mentioned above for those of you not parking in Lot 18 but bringing things go ahead and use the little pull off circle to drop your things off. Safe driving up from Charleston.

“I'm addicted to placebos. I could quit, but it wouldn't matter”~steven wright

I'll see if they fit in the car. My wife is bringing our two dogs and taking them hiking for the day, so have to fit 2 people, 2 dogs, and everything we're bringing in a sedan.

Lots of us have wives. Share those boards, man.

You have those made or did you make them?

Homemade. I spent days stenciling this set with painters tape. Found out later it's much quicker to cut the design out of card foam & spray the back with a tacky adhesive. We made wayyy too many sets.

Long story short, my first boards. The neighbor, who sells cornhole bags out of his garage since before I moved in saw me making them. He had always wanted to do this as a side job, too.

I was the painter, so when we started he'd do more of the construction and they'd work their way over to my garage for sanding and paint.

A year later, he's got a new kid, I'm backed up with several sets and neither of us had any free time. We finished the last couple and stopped.

These look fu##ing awesome!!! Great work!!

Warning- Filter lost.

I'll be there and I'm bringing breakfast donuts, tall boys of Busch light, and brats.

My wife and I will be there, we will bring cookies and beer.

We will also likely have two friends with us. Will update when I know what they are bringing.

I'm bringing a pan of mac & cheese, some type of dessert, and my delightful self. And a hammock for emergency naps.

Ain't nobody gonna let you nap in a hammock if you set it up. Everyone is just going to find creative ways to knock you out of it.

I just want to say regardless of your politics or what you think about what is going on right now, many women are reliving terrible times because of it and this is a great time to support this cause. I only wish I were in a position to contribute more.

There will be many above 21 activities taking place such as flipcup, beer pong, #Funnels4Fuente #Biersticks4Bud. Everyone know your limits and have a responsible way home if it is necessary. We want to have fun but we don't want anyone to find them-self in a bad situation either. Uber and The Hooptie Ride have great access to the lot and are great ways to get back to wherever you are staying, if necessary. And there is no issue leaving vehicles in the lot until Sunday.

Bought one anyway. I only go to a game once every few years, so now's not the time to cheap out on stuff haha.

Jesus I should have bought the parking pass this year just to sell it. Would have paid for entire trip up.

I haven't looked but I can't imagine the 18 passes selling like that for the other games. For $300 though you better be parking a bus and charging by the head.

Lot 18 is about $110 before StubHub fees. Other lots are definitely $250-350 though.

I more meant the upper tier lots that were going for $300-$500. I get it is convenient to be right there, but damn.

My first tailgating experiences are from Auburn where literally no one in their right mind buys a parking pass. If you do have one, you end up with dozens of people crammed around two parking spots with a trailer attached in my experience.

Then again, up until like 2006 Auburn let RVs park on the quad and legit ANYWHERE on campus. So for the LSU game you'd ahve RVs parked outside the main student center handing out beers on a Wednesday.

Just bought a Lot 18 pass from StubHub. Gonna party like it's 1999 Natty

Will be in Lot 9 across the street. Will pop by with some cash monies.

I'll see if I can slide by to say Hi and donate, but will be on the opposite end at the German Club for the heavy-lifting portion of tailgating.

Can't make the trip this weekend, so online donation made! Hope the tailgate is a blast, a ton of donations come in, and the [respectful] rowdiness propels the Hokies to victory! LET'S GOOOOOOOO!!!

HOKIES!!!!!

I'll be there with the wife and a friend (ND family ties but also a big Tech fan). Will probably bring extra food beer and water, but is there anything in particular needed that I could bring? Will probably pick up some beer from the local brewery to share as well. We good on Busch Light?

If you asked Nick you can never have enough Busch Light.

I donated! Hopefully it helps get over the mark!

Hey everyone just a final note on what we could need if you are bringing something other than a donation:

- Any snacks that you want or if you have something special you want to share
- Drinks of your preference (we will have beer but its bound to mostly be light stuff, so if there is something particular you like bring it and we can stick it in some empty cooler space)
- Extra coolers with ice or just ice (going to be warmer than normal so we may need some extra cool space)
- Local crafts and homebrews to pass around (this is just a suggestion but usually ends up happening and is alot of fun)
- Something to sit on (we really don't have many chairs but the guardrail makes a good seat)

Other than that we just wan't to see yall! Bring yourselves, friends, and thirst for a good time!

Everyone,

To say that the tailgate was a success this year is an understatement. Even in the abnormal October heat everyone showed up in force, and we had a great time. It was by far our best one yet. I do not know an exact amount but I know we blew up last year's numbers. I can't wait to do it again next year.

Thank You

Had an absolute blast at the tailgate. Great meeting you and a ton of fellow TKPers yesterday. Excellent food and hospitality all the way around!

We had a great time, it was great to meet so many fellow TKPers. Love that we were able to raise money for a great cause. We think we know who the unicorn head mask ended up with, but in case anyone else ended up with it, remember that with great power comes great responsibility.

It was in some random cooler in the back of my truck.

Also, shoutout to the guy generously sharing his Macallan. I have forgotten his name, but he's my personal MVP.

We had a great time too! It was great meeting new people. Lot 18 is always a blast. Good friends good food good times.

Had a blast at the Lot 18 tailgate meeting a number of fellow TKP'ers making their first appearance. Great going by everyone in contributing to the fundraiser. Fresh hot pizzas made by Frank and Nick were fantastic and, of course, the umpteen racks of ribs made by HokiEnginerd were tender & delicious and set a record for how quickly they disappeared. His smoked salsa just as good as it was at the Bill & Mary game. Don't know who made the pumkin crisp but wife & I loved every bite. So much other food didn't get to try. The pinata was no match for LancerHokie who swung the Klingon type weapon "bat'leth" just a couple times to release a mother lode of airplane bottles. Thanks to Frank for tent, jams & satellite dish TV set up. And, yes there was a Joe sighting!
