LANESANITY

Few rules exist surrounding “how to be a good football fan”. Most cardinal among them however, should be to never give up hope. Riding the roller coaster of anxiety that comes with being a fan is a typical experience. Nevertheless, at no point should we just let go. Last night with :44 seconds on the clock I witnessed 66,000+ of my sister and brethren adhere to this rule without hesitation or pause. Unlike some games past, it felt like we knew something spectacular was about to happen. I will not be stupid enough to tell you that a fan base as a mysterious 12th man can help win a football game, but we sure as hell did try.

Gut Reactions to Georgia Tech

Quick gut reactions to the roller coaster ride tonight in Blacksburg.

Defense

Terrific performance up front by the Hokie defensive line. Derrick Hopkins, Luther Maddy (prior to getting banged up) and all four defensive ends were outstanding. That is as well as a Hokie d-Line has played the run against a GT team. Foster had much more confidence in stopping the whole attack, with the DT's shutting down the dive and the outside guys rocking the QB.

MascotMock™: Buzz

Editor's Note: Bumped this up from last year. We're still planning the Mock 2.0, but for now, anyone with Photoshop skills, get it on. -- Joe
Alright boys and girls, joe has cast off another burden and handed me the reigns of the MascotMock™.  We're going to broaden the scope and include coaches and other university accoutrements (i.e. this week's Ramblin Wreck) to add to the hilarity a bit.  Keep it funny and PG13.
For those of you who are waiting on the wings to participate: download GIMP (free) here: http://www.gimp.org/downloads/
I learned it in a day.

A Big Hokie Welcome by a Fan For Fans

Next week this time, as we groggily awaken from the haze and discomfort made by the actions of the night before, a slight comfort remains. The comforts of knowing that each weekend for the next four months not need any confusion as to purpose or planning; for football has arrived. Neatly packaged on our doorsteps is a product that has yet to reveal itself as a new layer sheds each week. And, like kids on Christmas morning we will giddily feign patience as we hope what’s held within is in congruence with our ultimate hopes, that crystal ball.

BeerControl's 2012 ACC Road Trip

College football is knocking on our door, so that must mean my annual ACC roadtrip is back. After consulting the all important ACC helmet schedule (pdf) found here, I came up with my travel plans. I need to find a sponsor or quit my job and live off credit.  Pack an Airstream full of beer, funyuns and energy drinks and hit the road for the anti-Mike Hogewood ACC experience.

Monday practice notes

Per Hokiesports.com:

  • Freshman Donovan Riley ahead of walk on Carl Jackson at #2 boundary corner.
  • J.R. Collins and Corey Marshall are now listed as co-No. 1’s at end, though the Million Dollar Man still worked with the first team on Monday.
  • Randall Dunn stood out in pass skeleton (7 on 7) drills.
  • The punt returner position may be Dyrell Roberts and/or Kyshoen Jarrett. For the record, I hate seeing return guys being used when they start at positions with little depth.
  • Augie Conte has been the best true freshman OL and may make the travel squad. I couldn't tell who he was in the limited video from Sunday.

Penn State need to stop wearing white after Labor Day

Penn State has been a model of known fact for decades when it comes to the uniforms. Every spring when the new collection was unveiled, you were 99% accurate on your guess. The only question would be if there would be a blue stripe on the sleeves or not. Well, given this fact, lack of change, stick-in-the-muddiness, it's time for a change. Drastic change. Complete change. Maybe not going to green and purple change, but the entire set needs to be altered. Leave the past in the past. Forgo the white helmets. Make them blue with a white logo. Change everything. Forget "maybe a stripe." Put piping on the sides, around the neck, on the legs. Wear white shoes after labor day. Complete overhaul!!!

A Look Back to the famed Hokie Wide Tackle Six Defense and How It Influenced The Current Hokie Scheme

As some of you may remember, Virginia Tech rose to prominence in the early 90's on the back of elite special teams, a grind-it-out conservative offense, a state of the art weight training program, and most significantly, on the back of a radical defensive approach that took recruits that nobody wanted and turned them loose like the dogs of war on opposing defenses.

The ACC Football-Mad Men Mashup

The Mad Men Season 5 finale is Sunday and we're still (glances at watch) WAY too far away from the beginning of football season. So, to help pass some of that time and welcome the finale, enjoy this half-baked, fragment-heavy ACC football-Mad Men mashup.

Virginia Tech:  Don Draper

Easily the most consistently successful character in the bunch. Emerged from obscurity. Underlying the attention and attractive exterior, nagging flaws. Despite regular success, can never quite get what they desire most.

Florida State: Pete Campbell

The SEC and Stadium Woods

The Stadium Woods debate, being considered by the Hokie powers that be as I type, can have profound impact beyond the building of the new Beamer field house.

99 Days til Kickoff and the #VT4SEC Argument

Hey, y'all! Only ninety-nine days till the 2012 season kicks off! In reality, that means really only a little more than two months until camp opens, and it actually starts to FEEL like football season. Y'know, it'll be nice to see players in pads again, running through drills. This off-season has been so quiet, amiright?
