8-1 and Unhappy: Initial Reactions from Durham

I just returned home from a weekend in the North Carolina Triangle. This was my second game down at Duke, and both have been causes of anxiety that I didn't anticipate upon arrival.

Duke Football Primer: Photo Edition

Where they play: Wade Wallace Stadium

The Blue Devils have earned the NCAA's Academic Achievment Award more than any other football program.

The media perenially tabs the Blue Devils as ACC football dark horses...

...but usually they stick to the hardcourt.

The future of the ACC?

VT Football Winning Streaks & Week 2 BCS "Projections"

Not a whole lot of time for me this week, as I'm in the San Francisco Bay area for work, so I figured I'd throw out a few quick numbers nuggets to the TKP readers.  First, a look at Virginia Tech's active winning streaks, and then a look BCS Bowl projections as if the season ended today.

Here's a link to the story: http://www.ufl-football.com/news/virginia-beats-vegas-17-3-win-ufl-championship-game

Hokie alum Aaron Rouse, was named the game's MVP after picking off 3 passes.  Rouse played Rover for VT from 2003-2006 and spent a few years in the NFL afterwards.  For those of you who aren't familiar with Rouse, check out the links below.

Post Game Ranting: A Quick Game Overview

Well, that was certainly interesting wasn't it fellow Hokie fans? I have not had a chance yet to review the game film, but after watching the Hokies 30-14 win over Boston College yesterday, I wanted to share some quick observations as they stand fresh in my mind before I watch the film and find out that I am all wrong.

High Level Offensive Review of Wake Forest Game

This week, I spent most of my film review focused on the defensive line troubles that plagued the Hokies against Miami, but I did watch one live speed review of most of the offensive series. Using the themes we have discussed in the past, I will give my high level impressions of the Hokie offense this week.

Mock Interview: An Eagle Eye on Boston College

Editor's Note: Bumped to the front because this week we're having fun making a lot of stuff up.

Early this week I made the way up to Chestnut Hill to get a glimpse into the hearts and minds of Coach Spaziani along with a player or two. Some of the highlights are below:

Coach Spaz, may I call you Spaz? It just rolls easier off the tongue. Looking down the barrel of a 1-5 start where do you think your team has to go from here? What keys for success have you used to inspire your squad?

1st Quarter Second Guesses: Focus on the Defensive Line (Wake Forest)

After the defensive line debacle versus Miami, I took the opportunity to examine how the depleted Hokie defensive line performed against Wake Forest. With the Hokies schedule including pro-style power I running teams like UNC and UVA, as well as a wishbone Georgia Tech team, developing backup defensive linemen who can not only fill in for injured guys now, but who can also play important snaps late in the season, is crucial for Virginia Tech to win the ACC this year.
1st Quarter:
1st defensive series:
1st and 10- bootleg, defensive line flows, the whip apparently has bootleg responsibilities. Good coverage by Exum.

BCS Primer - Week 1 of the BCS Standings

The season's first BCS rankings have been released, and I figure if TheKeyPlay.com has any chance to become a dominant force in the college football blogosphere it's about time for us to start talking about bowl games and who's going to square off in the BCS Championship Game.  Let's face it: it's mid-October, we're halfway through the college football season, and the Hokies are bowl-eligible for their 19th straight year.  We're late to the game!  ESPN.com has had their bowl projections going since ... well, I think they've had them since January.

Sunday Reminder

Editor's note: I'm still traveling and away from the computer dealing with the consequences of back-to-back open bars. There will be multiple posts analyzing our domination of Wake coming. Until then, how about them Hokies? And this below. Please chime in with your thoughts, especially if you went to the game. --Joe

Wake's Stadium

While at the game today, I couldn't help but notice how inhospitable the stadium was. The announcer sounded like he was trying to sell the crowd something and advertised stuff at every opportunity. However, what annoyed me most was how they would blare music (and the announcer) over the Virginia Tech band whenever the tried to play so that they couldn't be heard. Between that and all the artificial music pumped in, I really did not like the game day experience at Wake Forest. It is a shame that WF did that, because it distracted greatly from the experience of the game.

But we won, 38-17. GO HOKIES! And winning is all that really matters.

HokieV's Quick Hits before Wake

I haven't had a chance to write full a reaction to our win over Miami - mainly due to a busy work week, but partly because I'm working on a post on the upcoming BCS standings for TKP's readers on Sunday.

So, I'd like to at least follow-up last week's win over Miami by putting some of my thoughts down to paper.

Tuesday Morning Second Guess: I Think You Will Hate Me.

Welcome to this edition of my ramblings and other nonsense. I am not going to have the bandwidth to do a deep drill down on the play by play of the game, however I wanted to share some high level observations of the game. First off, it was great to see the Hokie offense deliver a fantastic performance in the most adverse of conditions, however, given the euphoria of the dramatic nature of the win , I have a feeling some of these may rub some folks the wrong way. I want to be positive, but while I was thrilled with the win, there are some things that deeply concern me coming out of the game.

First off though, lets have a little sweet with the sour.

Positives

Am I the 1%?

Sorry about the title - I couldn't resist with all the dumbassery happening on Wall Street - but, what I am about to say just might be more unpopular than the Unpopular Opinion.  It's been a long 4 days (due to work kicking me in the junk ... repeatedly) since that fateful night, so only now am I catching up on Hokie Nation's response to the Clemson game.

My reaction to last Saturday?

A resounding Meh.  As in, "I don't really care."
