If they get Nnadi, that sets up one heck of a 4 man rotation in 2015. And don't be stunned if Nnadi and Walker step right into the two deep, especially if Maddy decides to go to the NFL.

I don't think he handles double teams well enough to be a legitimate defensive tackle option right now. I think most NFL teams would project him as a big 3-4 end. I can't speak to his motivating factors for staying or leaving. I would tell any kid, if you are going to get a big amount of guaranteed money, always choose to leave. If you are smart with your money and don't live extravagantly, you can always go back to school and finish in a year or so. That signing bonus will give you a great nest egg to start life. If you are not getting guaranteed money, stay in school.
Jarrett is another interesting case. He was much improved in coverage this season, but he is a strong safety in the NFL and not a free safety. His size would make him one of the smallest strong safeties in football. His production on film would really need to wow folks to get them to overlook his size. I think Jarrett will be a very good NFL player though.

Yes, he's done things like that in the past for his players. Show them where they are at, and what they need to work on, in order to develop them further.

Kyshoen has a brother with cerebal palsy and his mom works full time as a teacher. So I'm sure Kyshoen has more on his mind, including support for his brother and mother. If he's rated a rd 4-6 draft pick, I wouldn't be surprised if he leaves.
Read that Foster believed they were submitting just to get an idea of where they stand so they can focus on what they need to improve on next year to increase their draft stock.

Read this thread and the latest Ford thread consecutively to get the perfect duality of our recruiting mindset: star rankings are awesome or meaningless depending on the recruit in question.

Nice overview of prior QB's and start ratings on other thread.
I just don't see how a kid like Ford can have a season like he did and lose ground,
unless......the ratings don't mean diddly.

I've been following recruiting since the Brandon Royster recruitment in 1998, and I can tell you I don't see good signs in the Derrick Nnadi recruitment. It looks like to me that he has been looking for a reason not to pick VT for a long time.
That said, his other choices may eventually fall apart. This happened to Daryl Tapp, who was projected to VT for months but kept scheduling visits and waiting. Finally, I think it occured to him that College Park was a dump and he should just make the conventional choice and pick VT.
But look out for Nnadi, he might break some hearts.

Can you really fault a guy for wanting to take his time and wait on a commitment? He said way back in the summer that he planned on taking his officials and that it'd be a winter-time commitment. He very well may choose to go elsewhere, but I don't see his taking his time as "looking for a reason not to pick VT." And hey, if he is looking for a reason and he can't find one, happy birthday to us.

I don't fault him one bit, he should do it his way, on his timetable. However, and this is without any first hand information, I get the same feeling. He will end up elsewhere.

I think he would have picked UVA if they hadn't got Brown. Once Brown went to UVA, Nnadi wasn't and he's been looking for an alternative for months. He knows us very well and knows what we offer.
Reminds me a lot of Korven Kirren. Or Kirren Korven. I can't remember.

Clearly the staff needs to start mailing him some clever notes a la Coach Fondue. OR better yet, mail him those same notes but say they are from the other colleges he's looking at.

I was at one of the recruiting camps this past summer on campus and saw both Ricky Walker and Derrick Nnadi there. Of the two of of them I felt more like Nnadi would commit to tech based on his interactions with current players and coaches. Walker seemed to be more quiet and kepted to himself. I remember hearing while there, that the coaching staff and players were trying to find a place where Nnadi could stay because he wanted to stay in the Burg for the entire weekend. He was very socialable and in my opinion having a great time. Now given this was months ago things may have changed between him and Tech, but I feel having his last OV, and just by viewing him with current players and coaches I feel he will end up at VT. Can I say this without a doubt no but I have a good feeling on this one.

Damn, I almost forgot about Brandon. I've known the oldest Royster brother (there are four of them) the last seven or eight years (after Brandon went to Stanford) and give him incessant shit about Evan going out of state. I don't follow up with how lucky he turned out to be since all he would've gotten was a front row seat to watch Ryan MF Williams and Darren Evans...

These kids only have one chance in their entire life to be wined and dined by these universities. It's only fair that they get to visit anywhere that'll have them while they can.

Me as well. I took a tour of the "grounds" when applying for colleges (had absolutely no ties to either wahooland or VT except as the in-state schools everyone applied to) and I was accepted to both. On the car ride home with father-dearest, he asked me what I thought. All I could say was, I couldn't see myself there. I really just don't get the allure. The whole campus (especially the students) seems like its trying so hard to be something its not (Princeton, Harvard etc..) Needless to say, that was that... Boom! Hokie!
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
This. Fairly similar to how I became a Hokie. I went on a road trip with my dad to look at Duke, UNC, and UVA (UVA being my favorite of the 3 to be honest. No strong tie to it, grew up in Philadelphia, just one of those schools I liked as Virginia as a whole was a state I was fond of since childhood trips to Williamsburg, etc.
We looked at Duke first (the tour guide was such a prick I knew that was wrong immediately), then UNC, which I really quite liked actually. My dad had played college baseball, and knew about western VA a bit, so he suggested we took a look at VT. They wernt even on the radar. I took a group tour from Burress, got in the car and looked at my dad and said "Dad, I think this is where I want to go to school"
We then went to UVA on the drive back north to PA. We stopped and toured and I just did not like it at all.

I was a hokie fan for 4 years before I applied to VT. Got notice I didn't get in early decision, started other apps. Saw that UVA app was parchment or whatever and put it to the side. I think I started filling out Richard Blands app at that time. Luckily the mail came, and though not early decision, got in early to tech. End of filling out apps.

To be fair, the only bad thing about UVA is the football program. Also the fans. Oh and the stadium. Of course the campus is terrible and Charlottesville sucks. They're also pompous pricks. And their uniforms are terrible. Then again their coaching staff is full of a bunch of has-beens led by a laughingstock. Never mind........
On the other hand the turkey chili they served last time I was there 4 years ago was delicious. We eat our own mascot at home games I don't know why they thought it would offend us at their stadium.

I think he is doing a great job of looking at all the pieces to the puzzle. I would like to hope there might be 10-20 pieces left until the puzzle is finished. I spoke with Bud Foster the other day and he said that he "might have taken a couple of those pieces and is waiting for him to visit that way they can finish the puzzle together."
I'm hoping once all completed the puzzle will look something like this:

Call me crazy, but I feel good about him coming to the promised land. Connection to coaches + current players + our pursuit + VT being last official = future anchor of Buds D. I think this is a classic case of a young man enjoying the fruits of his labor before he nails down his choice. Good for him...if do the same! How many more times will he be pursued like this? Not many. For most HS kids, this is the prime of their careers.

I hope the frenzy of it all subsides sooner than later.

Personally, if I were in his shoes I would take all the visits, weigh the options, and pick Tech in the end.
What other school puts such an emphasis on Defense, much less defensive tackles. And is close to home too? With a stable coaching staff and an NFL HOF DT roaming the sidelines? With a winning tradition, and utter domination of their heated in-state rival?
I get the allure of FSU and Bama, but the VT defense is just as good and in his own backyard.
I am confident that Mr. Nnadi will make the right decision.

And, on the other side of the coin, some kids might want to do their own thing. For every kid who wants to be close to home, another may want to experience a new environment.
In the context of the comment I was responding to, "I get the allure of FSU and Bama, but the VT defense is just as good and in his own backyard." "and in his own backyard" implies as a positive for Nnadi picking Tech, when in fact he may want to leave the neighborhood.

Final two for me was Penn State(about 5 hours) and Blacksburg (6.5 hours to 7.5 hours away), but I can see kids wanting to play close to home, and know kids that picked schools closer to home or transferred back. To each his own but to some kids it really matters, but i feel like for most it's not that big of a deal

Having friends and family at games is a big deal for a lot of guys, and travelling costs are expensive for families. Knowing a few guys on campus is important for some as well. Adjusting to big-time college football can be rough without support.

I am not disagreeing with that premise. However, it's not a tautology. You're generalizing, and making a logical conclusion that a generalization is going to help us land a specific recruit. That doesn't make sense to me.

He won't be visiting until January 24th so he probably won't decide until Signing Day.
FSU has six defensive tackles on their recruit list at this point.
We need him much more than they do.
In addition to the 5 DT commits for 2014, they also have 7 DTs currently on the roster who will return in 2014.
Like you said - lots more playing time for a DT at Tech.
Nnadi's visit schedule via: http://hamptonroads.com/2013/12/ocean-lakes-nnadi-making-final-college-v....
Nnadi will visit Florida State this weekend, Ohio State the weekend of Jan. 15-16, then finally Virginia Tech on Jan. 24.
Having the last visit is very BIG for Tech.
it's either fsu or vt, unless something dramatically changes for urban.
That we are last is a good sign.
He has also been to VT multiple times. His last visit may be his commitment announcement.
FWIW:
new prediction from Evan Flood at 247sports today for Nnadi to VT.
If they get Nnadi, that sets up one heck of a 4 man rotation in 2015. And don't be stunned if Nnadi and Walker step right into the two deep, especially if Maddy decides to go to the NFL.
You mean with Nigel and Baron? Tim Settles gonna want some time, yo!
Is Maddy declaring for the draft a real possibility? Just curious as this is the first I've heard/thought of it.
He submitted paperwork for a draft grade. Him and Jarrett.
Yeah I remember reading that now. Still curious what French's opinion would be on the possibility of him leaving though.
I don't think he handles double teams well enough to be a legitimate defensive tackle option right now. I think most NFL teams would project him as a big 3-4 end. It sounds like Foster is of the opinion that they just want to see where they stand right now. I don't think thy're too seriously considering leaving.

Great article. Can't blame him if he goes, but I'd love for him to stay and up his draft stock and cash in even more next year.

the drop on Andrew Ford is a relative one. He may have gotten better but some quarterbacks behind him may have gotten that much better.
Apparently Penn State just got a commit from the top DT on their board. This should only help the Hokie's position with Nnadi.
I've been following recruiting since the Brandon Royster recruitment in 1998, and I can tell you I don't see good signs in the Derrick Nnadi recruitment. It looks like to me that he has been looking for a reason not to pick VT for a long time.

Only other place I could see him go would be PSU. I think FSU has too much depth coming in. A challenge is nice, but not much...
