Hokies Offense 13th in SP+ After 2020 Week 9

Wow, Virginia Tech is on the brink of a top-10 offense according to SP+ https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/30236424/college-footba.... The Hokies rank No. 20 overall.

USC (0-0) and Wisconsin (1-0) are ranked higher than us.

It's a predictive measure that takes recruiting rankings into account, and Wisconsin's only data point this year was extremely impressive statistically.

Oh I know, but those two are weak on data points and who knows what those teams will be through the season.

The system uses 2019 data until there's enough 2020 data. I believe it's after 6 games.

Right, So VT is using 2020 data, and USC isnt.

Indeed, and my reply was more applicable to joey25. I was more or less replying to the sub-thread at-large.

Forgot about that it's prior year+recruiting.

The SP+ rankings use preseason projections throughout the season, gradually changing the ratio of projections to results as more games are played, but only their end-of-year rankings are completely free of preseason bias. It's kind of strange, even if the ratio is negligible by the end.

Defense making strides and offense pushing top ten. Just keep winning.

Yes. Good win yesterday... defense still has issues but you see the progress. Offense has played great at times.

darn tooting

One game at a time. new defensive scheme was going to come with some growing pains, and the circumstances only exacerbated that. Now need to tighten up on third downs

Imagine DC if we still had Farley out there locking down the best receiver on opposing teams. Those long pass busts would be a lot less frequent, and we probably have a least one more victory imho. Losing developed talent early really sets a program back.

Yea, you can say that about every team every year. Imagine if UGA still had Jamie Newman, or PSU still had Micah Parsons, or NC State still had their starting QB, etc.

Every team loses developed talent every year, both before and during the season. The best teams are able to replace that talent relatively quickly. That's why recruiting is so important.

Not sure what the general consensus is around here, but I actually agree and felt good about what I saw yesterday. On some level, we let Lville stay in a little more than we should have with some boneheaded slip ups. But on the flip side it seemed like Lville threw the kitchen sink to try to get the win, they were hyped like it was a rivalry game or something. It was impressive that we made some key defensive stops against a team that frankly I think is a little better than their record.

Louisville looked to have a ton of speed at RB and Cunningham can run too. For the most part we contained their run game.

By not making Cunningham more of a (planned) part of the running game, I think Loserville hurts themselves. He is a weapon, but seems lot less effective if pressured.

Cunningham has been banged up a lot this season so L'Ville may have been trying to save him from some extra punishment.

Nobody told the D Line.
