Bucky Hodges

Most of us know already that hes moving to TE. Hearing that it was his decision to move there. Not sure if you guys know but he came in last yr at 6'6. Well he is now 6'8. Can you guys imagine a TE at 6'8 with bucky's athletic ability? HUGE mismatches. Especially if we start using 2 TE's more like SL wants to do

Figured it was going to happen, but didn't know it was official. Where is this being reported? Can't find anything yet

I can imagine it. His name is Jimmy Graham. We can only hope...

6'8"? can he play bball? lol

@VTimHokie85

I was under the impression that the 6'8" report was a mis-print by Beamerball back in July. I'm checking with my buddy at Hokiesports to confirm, but their numbers (6'6" 235) should've been taken from their weigh-ins when the players reported in August, ie more recently and more accurate.

As far as moving to TE, that could happen, but I haven't seen or heard anything official. We all know he was asked to play some TE for the scout team in order to mirror opposing teams' very tall, athletic TE's like UNC's Eric Ebron, but it would extremely odd to me that he wouldn't even be given a shot to compete at Quarterback in the Spring.

EDIT: Just ask him on Twitter haha

TEs and QBs are essentially the same.....not sure what the big deal is.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOONE was way more entertaining to scream out.

When I scream out anything regarding Logan, it's usually less than appropriate.

I'm picturing 65k fans screaming "BUCK U!"

If this is true, I I'm gonna complain after every loss that our TE isn't playing at his natural position while giving him backhanded compliments about being a team player.

Our athletic TE recruit was made a QB and our athletic QB recruit was made a TE. Blacksburg just became Bizarro World!
If true, the news of this position swap came at (almost) the best time ever!

Jimmy Graham 2.0?

Like I said sometime this past summer, he's always been an athlete playing quarterback, not really a true quarterback. This move makes the most sense for him and the team. Glad he's moving. If he can bulk up a bit, him and Klein together could be every defense's worst nightmare - mismatch city. And at 6'6 he could be a serious redzone target.

If the Hodges move to TE is correct, and the decision by McCray to give up football, that will give us five TEs on the roster - Cline, Malleck, Redman, Hodges, and Jackson. Hopefully, Cline and Hodges will put on some good muscle-weight during the off-season.

Dakota Jackson is the real mystery man to me at this point - haven't heard anything about him, good or bad, since he arrived. Anybody know what's going on with this guy?

Additionally, 2014 TE Xavier Burke will be arriving next Fall, but he will probably redshirt.

Malleck is going to be the main guy for sure, assuming of course that he comes back healthy from his shoulder injury. Cline showed some nice things this year at times and Bucky could be a weapon with his athleticism. Just needs to pput some weight and muscle on.

Have to say I was kinda looking fwd to him being under center after Leal. Oh well.

Still haven't heard confirmation about the move... Or about the 6'8" measurements...?

Dont forget xavier burke as our te coming in this yr. he got some high praise at the rivals 5 star camps. And buckys move isnt official official but they said its pretty much going to happen. I tweeted bucky and asked if the 6'8 reports were true and he fav my tweet so i take that as a yes. But has been workn out at the te spot for weeks now. Thats where his reps are at and not so much at the qb position.

Very cool. Thx for clarifying

What does Kalvin Cline have to say about this? He was starting to get his footing last season.

look at the Eagles - the rookie Ertz and Celek are BOTH tearing it up this year

Once this happens it shouldn't be a big deal. With the way things have been going its pretty smart to have a 6'6-6'8 guy move to a position he can grasp and excel at. Look at what happened to us before the season started. Malleck goes down and now we have to start a back then unheard of kid. But now he is know as Kalvin Cline the starting TE. It's not a bad idea to create depth within the squad. If he has been doing the drills and everything else why change him back to QB where we have great depth.

will VT now be known as DB & TE U?

Remember when TEs were a weakness at the beginning of the year especially with Malleck getting hurt? Now they are looking like the strength of the offense and maybe the team. Cline-Malleck-Hodges and possibly Burke? That's a scary combination for opposing defenses.

East Coast Stanford!

I just had the same exact thought!

6'8", 235 ???

Those in the TE camp better be wary of Grimes giving him "motivational" tapes. Pretty sure a close analysis would find all the subliminal messages saying "Eat. Eat!"

Kline needs to work on blocking but his pass catching is unreal. I know SL wants to use 2 TEs. Could create great mismatches. Im loving the competition.

There's a guy on another VT board (I'm not sure if he's on here also...) who has actually talked to Bucky. Apparently he's excited about playing TE given his success in limited action there during practice.

Right now, Malleck and Kline should be considered locks as starters, but Hodges will certainly be in the mix for playing time. I like the idea of this becoming more of a play-making position for us, as it really opens up the offense and allows for Loeffler's creative passing schemes to thrive.

Being an athlete I usually do not worry about the ability to catch the ball, but has he ever played a position where he needs to block anyone?

@vtscottyb

Several weeks ago, I asked that same question on another board - the answer was that he blocks very well.

I love the idea of 2 of Bucky, Malleck and Cline at TE on passing downs (and the other guys as well). Big and athletic. A matchup nightmare, especially at the college level.

we could do what stanford does...

I believe you're missing a few linemen. As well as a whole line.

Add an extra running back and you'd have a Bill Dooley offense.

What's Bucky's 40 time? 6'6", 235 would be deadly on the outside.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

we all saw how that went with Marcus Davis. Guy was huge had all the things to be special and was mediocre at best, granted it was his work ethic that killed him. I don't think a big WR is the type Loeffler wants, look at how well Wes Welker 2.0 is doing and then add in JS5 for the deep routes where does a tall WR fit in.. Maybe an H back like Coles? If so then why move him to WR.

"I'm high on Juice and ready to stick it in!" Whit Babcock

I also see Missouri's starting WR corps with heights of 6'2", 6'4", and 6'6" and how they're almost unguardable.

Also, a tall WR would be invaluable in the red zone, somewhere where we've struggled. That's guaranteed points against most corners.

Even looking at Jimmy Graham, he's pretty much a TE in name only. I almost never see him line up beside a tackle anymore.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

Dorial Green-Beckham is not Marcus Davis. Or rather Marcus Davis was never the kind of player Dorial Green-Beckham is or will be. The kid is ridiculous. There's a reason he was the #1 receiver in the country and even #1 player in the nation by some people.

Exactly.

And due to SEC geography majors, I'll be watching him as a divisional foe of Georgia for at least one more year. -_-

When Davis tried he was the best receiver we've had in a long time. Where would a tall receiver fit in you ask? On all the deep jump balls loeffler tried throwing to tiny knowles at the beginning of the year. Tbh, knowles and paper boy are both more slot guys in their build and skill set than they are outside receivers

Not sure what you're getting at here... I'm pretty sure Loeffler would take a couple Calvin Johnson's if he could find them.

Just because a receiver is 6'6", 220 and runs a 4.4 doesn't mean he has to have effort issues.

I get your point there, just was frustrating to watch Davis, that is all. And Knowles isn't that tiny he just isn't the best at fighting for position he is a speed guy. If we want to throw the ball up then put Caleb in Red zone and all he has to do is jump and catch.

"I'm high on Juice and ready to stick it in!" Whit Babcock

Knowles got better as the season progressed, and all the receivers got better in blocking for the run. Granted, he rarely lays out for the ball still. Perhaps a little off-season work from Moorehead.

Rivals had him listed at 4.6 on the 40

Don't know if it was here or on TSL but I read that Bucky played TE on the scout team offense when prepping for UNC to simulate their TE. Foster said he looked real good at that position. I think it will be better for him and the team in the long run. Also read that he was still a work in progress with his QB mechanics and all so with Ford and Durkin coming in it looks like a more logical move as well.

Exactly. Ever since he was on the scout team preparing for unc as a TE hes been getting reps there ever since
