Love AME! This has probably bees discussed before, but does anyone else think we need to get back to a slightly darker maroon? It has become lighter over the years, right, or is my mind playing tricks on me?

I think it has to do with it raining several times for AME. When it rains maroon seems to especially have a quality of darkening.
ESPECIALLY because I was a freshman in 2007 vs. BC and can remember walking back to pritchard with that rain soaked AME loss burned into my eyes.

I can agree with that... Especially the orange being officially traditionally burnt we now have almost a neon orange.
Although if you look at Texas burnt orange I don't think we were ever the same as that. I dunno what true burnt orange is or even means but if it's UT burnt orange we were never that

Usually I want it for the big games, but we have been losing those so we don't win in AME as much. Let's get a "Top 25" win in them and be happy with that.

This is makes me really sad. AME used to be reserved for big time games. It used to mean something like the Terror Dome used to mean something. But now we're wearing it for a nooner against Liberty?! Liberty?! SMDH

UNC uniform reveal: "Orange pants are the kidding me?? We're horrible in those and we don't even look like VT!"
Louisville uniform reveal: "Maroon pants?? Are you kidding me? We just missed an opportunity to wear Orange pants on Halloween!"
Liberty uniform reveal: "AME?? For Liberty??? Our program has fallen so far this is embarrassing!!"
I don't care what we wear Saturday, let's just crush Liberty on Saturday guys.... winning cures all.

I view it as similar to my trips to Lane over the past few years. I was getting to the point where I could only go once a year, so I picked the big games. 2014 Miami, 2015 Ohio State, 2017 Clemson.
I got tired of always seeing losing games in person. So in 2018, I went to the W&M game. Finally got to walk out of the stadium with that winning feeling.

This is the point I came here to make. Standard home look should just be AME. I'd like all white on the road but last week's look is acceptable too (except not going all orange on Halloween was a real missed opportunity).
Also, why do we care?

All I know is I will be wearing my maroon shirt when I am AT the game tomorrow. I don't care that I only got selected for one game this year, still going and should watch my HOKIES crush Liberty!

I agree with the sentiments that you knew when we broke out AME, we were in the midst of a big game.
However, we have not had success lately wearing the AME combination and the mystique of it has quickly worn away.
Unfortunately, AME (for me) is associated with poor performance and disappointment, so in order to rectify this, I am in agreement that AME should be worn more and/or become our new standard home uni as we attempt to re-establish a dominant home field advantage/winning record.
No reason why we shouldn't sex it up and look our best at home for the majority of our games. Win or die trying.
*edit* to establish a new home jersey combo that gets used for big time games and gets us as excited as AME used to....it's gimmicky, but I feel a variation of our Pro Combat Black Out uniforms would look and feel amazing. Considering we only have a big prime time, College Game Day-esque game at home once a year or once every other year (if we're lucky), considering what Enter Sandman is all about...Exit Light/Enter Night, I think it would look great.
(I do not feel the fans need to wear black, as I also really enjoyed the alternating maroon/orange grid we had for Notre Dame)

The last time I vividly remember success in these uniforms was 2003 when they were still new. If my memory is correct we used them twice in '03 against A&M and Miami, and we won both convincingly.

We wore AME for the 6OT thriller last year, and overall we are 3-4 in AME under Fuente, and that includes 2 losses to Clemson. Not exactly great, but considering that we generally only wear them in big games that's not too terrible.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
put the AME in the back of the uniform closet and leave it there until we can earn a Top 10 ranking again. Or wear it every damn game because the combo has no significance any more.

I'll take it a step further. Maroon helmets, maroon (home)/white (away) jersey, white pants. All the time. And strip away the name on the back of the jersey.
Maybe, just maybe if we take all that energy that is invested in selecting a uniform and instead put it in to conditioning, practice, and game planning we might see some improvements.

can we get rid of the shoulder stripes, while we're at it.
Generally, though, I agree. Everyone talks about how "the kids love the uniform changes/reveals"
yeah well recruits aren't coming here. It's offensive to the players to suggest that they pick a school because of the uniforms. Absolutely insulting.
I think a lot of time and energy is wasted on the uniform drama. And for what? The charade is not having a positive impact that I can detect. I would love for this team to go to 2 basic uniforms. The two you mention are just fine. No special uniforms for special games. Just a Home and an Away set that is simple.
I don't see Bama or Clemson doing special uniforms or uniform reveals. They keep it simple and they focus on winning the damn games.

as trivial as it may seem, I believe its hard to have a complete identity when you dont know what you're supposed to look like. With all the other challenges we have I would think an easy thing to do would be to simplify as many things as possible, and this is one of those areas even if it is cosmetic.
I know '99 was an outlier year for us, but we had a very basic combo. Home? M/M/W. Away? M/W/W. And it didn't change in 2000 either.
Related, and having never been under center before in my life, I always wondered how confusing (if at all) it is to a QB to have uniform colors constantly changing and does that affect your ability to make reads and find the open receiver?

I'll be rocking my maroon shirt this weekend in the stadium... Williams-Brice Stadium that is
You're not going to stand out that much.
Would this have been homecoming? Is there some other occasion?
Homecoming was the weekend we waxed BC
Really surprised me. That's one of the better reveal videos they've done.
Love AME! This has probably bees discussed before, but does anyone else think we need to get back to a slightly darker maroon? It has become lighter over the years, right, or is my mind playing tricks on me?
Agreed it has gotten lighter.
It's called "Burple"
The color for athletics contains no blue
Burgundy + purple = Burple
Purple has blue in it
Wouldn't it be "murple"?? Maroon+Purple. Maroon is a darker color while burgundy has more of a red tint.
Although comparing the colors on google, it seems that we have gone from maroon to burgundy...
I think I like the orange better when the maroon is lighter though. The dark
maroon to orange combo was more jarring IMO.
I think it has to do with it raining several times for AME. When it rains maroon seems to especially have a quality of darkening.

Was at the Hurricane Isabel game in 2003 and you're right about the rain on AME.
Both the maroon and orange have gotten lighter. Maroon got closer to purple, and orange got less burnt.
All part of the branding efforts.
I can agree with that... Especially the orange being officially traditionally burnt we now have almost a neon orange.

I remember seeing this in 2015 from a Tennesee re-brand Nike document. As of 2014 our orange was the same as Clemson, Florida, and Oklahoma State.

The more AME the better
I wish it was the only uni we wore
Love this gif. Brought a smile to my face when I needed it.
Any chance we got some special uniforms lined up for Clemson or Miami?
I guess we need to break out all the stops so we've got the best chance to beat LIBERTY.
People place way too much stock into uniforms.
So let me get this straight.....

I've grown accustomed to losing big games in AME so maybe using it against Liberty instead of Clemson is a good thing
I think

2016 AME/Maroon Effect win against Miami was a nice change to the losing while wearing our favorite combo we had experienced years prior.
So does this mean we're wearing M/M/O for Miami and O/O/W for Clemson?
Should be standard home uni. Look our best all the time not just certain games.
By the way, this thread made me lol at the level of seriousness some of you have.
This is the point I came here to make. Standard home look should just be AME. I'd like all white on the road but last week's look is acceptable too (except not going all orange on Halloween was a real missed opportunity).
Also, why do we care?
Frosty is in all maroon every week. Note the picture.
frosty aint got no pants on!
He's a polar bear. Needs to stay cool down in this hot, lower 48, climate!
Just hoping Frosty's Dad has his on.
All I know is I will be wearing my maroon shirt when I am AT the game tomorrow. I don't care that I only got selected for one game this year, still going and should watch my HOKIES crush Liberty!
If we lose to friggen Liberty while wearing AME, burn the combination forever
AOE for every game if this happens.
Are you really so superstitious to believe that?
Welp......
ugh, that guy is such a clown
Well, this is embarassing. Um, excuse me, but your RBF is showing.
I love those redheads, man...
-Wooderson.
/S
Just win, by a LOT
AOE is a great uniform...FOR ME TO POOP ON

Oh shit it's about to go down Saturday
We haven't been good the last few times in AME. Including today.
I came here to put "well this didn't age well" on a comment, but then I realized it applies to every comment on this thread

I think that AME needs to go the way of Old Yeller.
AME needs to be retired until we've earned the right to wear it.
That's what Fowler said about Enter Sandman a few years back
put the AME in the back of the uniform closet and leave it there until we can earn a Top 10 ranking again. Or wear it every damn game because the combo has no significance any more.

Black and grey no markings until we earn it, then slowly bring back them back
