Said this in the other thread. Joe, love the work you do. Even as I grow to despise this team and administration, I'll still support this site. It's done too much good for me not to.

I grew up there and luckily don't live there anymore, but the dread has set in hard here. This is the worst I've felt after a dumb VT loss ever and I sat through the rain at the JMU game and sat next to the student section at ODU.

I'm right there with you. And I attended both the Boise and JMU games that week. But at least we had Beamer and the rest to rebound. I do not have such confidence, in Fuente.

Here's the most disconcerting thing - if you live anywhere near the area of Lynchburg and have traveled down 460/29 - you've probably seen the obscene field house they built. That's what we're dealing with. It's Oregon level stuff in regards to the facilities they're constantly constructing for this football program they have. As long as they continue to convince kids to come to this program (which, with that AD, do you think that's gonna be a problem?), yeah, it's worrisome.

You dont even need to drive by it, they have been constant news once they decided to pour the religious coffers into the program. They have every aspect moving in the right direction, from fan donations, administration firmly dedicated to the program, and likely a few great bagmen behind their surge in the transfer market. They also have a head coach, that while he has a slimy past, he has a track record of putting guys in the NFL and he has been allocated the budget to make just about any hire he wants.
Liberty has also undergone a $1 BILLION dollar campus improvement project outside of the Athletic department. Most dont realize that Liberty, primarily due to its online programs is consistently one of the Top 5 largest schools in the country, and the largest Christian university in the world. They have in excess of 100,000 students annually. Not hard to do the math on why they are a program on the rise.
Liberty have built 13 new athletic facilities since 2011, for almost every major sport. It obviously helps to have the Falwell Ministry money to make up for deficits. Their athletic department has run a deficit for the last four years but the school covers it based on the growth projections of the football program, which seems to be in high gear.
There is a good chance that Liberty will make it to the end of the season undefeated with a battle with a likely also undefeated Coastal Carolina to determine which finishes the season with a Top Ten ranking and an outside shot at the playoffs as a feel good story. The hardest game Liberty has left is NC State, which would give the Flames three wins over ACC teams.
They arent the lesser stepchild anymore and just kicked our teeth in literally to prove it.

The money the ACC would have to give Tech for that would probably be in Tech's best interest. That would be one of the only saving graces to having 14 more years on the ACCNetwork media deal. Buyout would have to be north of $150M and Tech getting to take its media rights back with it. Liberty is though going to quickly move into the conversation of being the 15th full time member of the ACC.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I disagree. The cost savings of another centralized school for non revenue sports combined with the trajectory their program is on with facilities, coaching staffs and school support make them an ideal add, along with the fact it would allow the ACC post Swofford to renegotiate its terrible deal with ESPN. Academically they would fit as well which has been a big knock on several other candidate schools.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I understand where they currently sit but I have seen projections regarding their recent and pending Academic investments, especially in their medical school, religious ministry program, music program and several other academic programs combined with a massive investment in school facilities, including athletics that projects them into the Top 100 in 3-5 years. The school endowment fund has already moved into the Top 100 at 68th and has seen the 4th largest growth in the last five years. Their expense management across the university is phenomenal, especially compared to growth in revenue.
Obviously a bit skewed but one of many I have read regarding the school. I was looking at a job there which sparked the interest.
"Liberty's financial strength continues to translate into real resources for students as they benefit from new and improved facilities throughout campus. In the last 12 months, the School of Business opened its new building and major investments were made in the engineering program, the School of Behavioral Sciences, the College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the School of Nursing, among other academic areas. Liberty is poised to open a new Veterans Student Center that triples the square footage for military students by the end of 2020. "
If it is able to raise its profile to this level in the next few years, I do see them having the path to potential membership. As they are now, no, but I dont foresee them remaining there long with the constant investment back into the school and their incredible rate of return with their online programs.
They dont just reach out to their alumni for support, they provide their alumni something to buy in on both academically and athletically and its working. We unfortunately dont seem to have that same focused support structure and vision in place at Virginia Tech and it shows.

So many responses and I'm sure I'm violating CGs, but anyway.
#sauces (friend who works in Liberty's accreditation compliance office) says that Liberty's student numbers (100,000+) is suspect, to say the least. Anyone who has ever taken an online class, but not graduated is considered an active student. Were you deployed ten years ago and wanted to get a college credit, but failed the one class you took? You're an active student.
Falwell Sr. pushed the school as a ministry to his televangelist donor base. At one point they had fund drives where people would give per student. This is why people like me got an acceptance letter with a full ride scholarship without even applying (just based on SAT scores). To this day, the big donor pitch is the moral training of america's youth. Yes, they have gobs of money and don't even know how to spend it all (and they have to or risk losing "non-profit" status), but I don't know that it's coming from alumni as much as just the evangelical community in general.
The largest employer of Liberty graduates? Liberty university. They use recent grads as cheap labor to artificially push down the salary ranges. A friend of mine is a manager in the IT department for the online school and he can't keep good people on because they won't pay a living wage for technical professionals. Instead, they make him hire 2 CS grads for every one experienced person that leaves looking for paying work elsewhere. Hell, I have another friend who has been teaching there for 15 years and she can't support her family of 4 on her salary (and this is with a PHd and post doc work on her resume). She tried to go elsewhere, but was basically told she is unemployable at other universities because so much time at Liberty is a red flag.
We have a service tech at my job who has an ME degree from Liberty. If the guy hadn't had a football scholarship, I'd tell him to ask for his money back. I have a very low opinion of recent grads with no work experience, but even so, this guy would have been better off riding the pine for UNCheat and getting a toilet paper degree.
I could go on.
All that to say that as time goes on, more money will lead to better performance (presumably) and more graduates will lead to a stronger network. In 20 years, a resume with Liberty on it might not go straight into the trashcan.

Serious question here - I was at that '98 game as a student, and all I really remember from that was a feeling of "wtf just happened?" Not once did I think or hear the thought of firing anyone on that staff. I'm just wondering if we are mired in technology and have the ability to vent a lot more widely, or was this mentality we are now dealing with present on that infamous Saturday 22 years ago?

No way this was worse than the ODU loss. While it still sucks we had chances to win the game and we should have. ODU is a decent team this year. They weren't coming with a few losses.
The ODU team was atrocious and we had absolutely no business losing to them. They went on to lose a bunch more games against crappy teams.

I am not a basketball person but I am seriously thinking about checking out until spring ball. When he was hired Fuente was my number 1 choice for replacing Beamer. I actually joined the Hokie Club and subsequently increased my donations because I thought Fuente was the right choice for the program. But given this performance in year 5, the sheer and total incompetence, I can no longer say the Fuente is the right man to lead the program. He has completely failed on the PR and recruiting fronts. I wish this was a normal year and we could make a change and I know we can't. So in order to save my sanity, I think I just have to step away for a bit. I wish Fuente would come to the same conclusion. He is actively damaging the football program with his leadership.

Just...just those last 8 seconds...I'm not a burn it down guy...could that have possibly been coached any worse? Why ever call a time out for a 60 yard field goal when that guy hasn't made anything over 45 ever!??!?!? Then why oh why do we play a prevent on a 4th and 6 with 8 seconds left leaving an easy pitch and catch for a makeable field goal leaving frankly both wideouts for an easy pitch and catch??!! We press or even play off the receivers and tackle them in bounds this baby is over! I have no words and will just say that was the most disappointing 8 seconds of coaching I may have ever seen...god help this program going forward🙏😞

If we are honest, overtime probably wouldn't have gone well for us.
I loled when we blocked the kick and scored...thinking "how the hell did we win this game"...then had that sinking feeling kick in when it was obvious it didn't count.

I agree man...we couldn't stop them
From 25 yards out in OT and match score for score IMO. When the kicked was blocked I was saying to my wife "wow we just stole this game somehow and I feel dirty". Of course then we all know what happened and when it was over (as my wife actually was laughing in disbelief and or more likely total belief) I said "yep, that seems about right"...pretty sure we are on the same page, and still that last 8 seconds is inexcusable at any level of football. Maybe we get back on track?? But I'm not expecting it

and that's what Fuente era teams do...just when you think it's about to be a lost cause we win the game/s we thought we'd get trucked in...time will tell, but I would not be surprised at all to see a big win against Miami.

On to the next one. I no longer watch these games with any delusions of post season glory. Hope Herbert is ok. We are gonna need him to have a game against Miami.
Maybe it's because I don't care as much anymore, but I still think we can beat Miami. They shit the bed against us pretty often.
Hooker is a don though. Probably one of the best carry jobs we have seen recently. Idk if that means we just have no talent elsewhere or what but they really put the offense on his back.

Well, I suppose the silver lining is that I vividly remember being back in college. The unfortunate part is that was from 1989-1993. But I choose to focus on the 'feeling younger' and 1993 Independence Bowl parts ... rather than the 1989 (6-4-1), 1990 (6-4), 1991 (5-6) and 1992 (2-8-1) records. Much better!

I haven't watched a single game this season. I used to be die-hard. I was happy when they got Fuente. The first season under him, I liked it. But since then, we all know it's been rough. In 1992, Beamer's teams were clearly on the rise, even though the record sucked. They were competitive and just need a little more of a nudge to get over the hump. Yeah, it is too frustrating and outright demoralizing to my psyche and family to commit 3-3.5 hours for a Virginia Tech football game each weekend now. I cannot even fathom traveling 4.5 hours from Tidewater and pay over 1K to watch, god knows what will show up on the field nowadays. It will have to take us making the ACC championship before I commit to ponying up money for tickets next year. I will still be a donor b/c that is what I am told needs to occur, regardless if Fuente is canned sooner or later.

Y'all some real ones. ... I'll be back Thursday or something.
... And that'll be to discuss video game stuff. Have a good weekend.
Said this in the other thread. Joe, love the work you do. Even as I grow to despise this team and administration, I'll still support this site. It's done too much good for me not to.
Good Luck, and bless you Joe. I think I might've had enough internet for the week now.
I love this community and will continue to subscribe until I'm dead.
It's clear Fuente is not a good coach.
Time to start a go fund me to get his ass fired, and make a short list of replacements.
I really appreciate that because we try to put out the same quality of work regardless of the on-field results.
Thank you sir. Again, the offer stands. Is there away that I can donate to give someone else the membership?
I will also contribute a one year scholly for a deserving individual.
This 100x
done

I think most folks are thinking the same way this go around. So there likely won't be too much back and forth.
I was gonna say the same thing. I think we can look at this as Fuente finally bringing all of us together lol
Joe - I don't think it will get uncivil here, we're all on the same team, now. :)
I will agree to your request as long as you keep the server away from Fuente's office.
I got a chuckle out of this. +1
What's wrong with letting the server idle at 50% and low maintenance while all the others get upgrades to support new features and outperform us?
That was a shit can dumpster fire in lane stadium
I live in Lynchburg. So this is just gonna be fuckin' super dealing with their fans for the next year...as well as (probably) UVA fans as well.
I am dreading this as well.
I third this motion
Hello friends. Wish there wasn't a fucking pandemic. Would be a good night to all get together around a fire and drink away.
Yes it would.
I grew up there and luckily don't live there anymore, but the dread has set in hard here. This is the worst I've felt after a dumb VT loss ever and I sat through the rain at the JMU game and sat next to the student section at ODU.

Yea, really looking forward to Monday and talking with my mechanical foreman who's a UVA fan. Fuck me.
JMU
Nothing to burn down. We're all in the same page today
Didn't we already burn it down 2 weeks ago? Are we Bill Murray, and the program is Punxsutawney?
We've been regularly burning it down every three weeks for years now.
Don't care enough to burn anything down after that showing.
Yeah I'm pretty numb
Basically just scanning the vent thread periodically.
Here's the most disconcerting thing - if you live anywhere near the area of Lynchburg and have traveled down 460/29 - you've probably seen the obscene field house they built. They arent the lesser stepchild anymore and just kicked our teeth in literally to prove it.
So what you are saying is that they are "budding rivals" to VT...?
This would require VT to be good at football, but wait, LOLUVA....
I read all this and I'm suddenly less worried about our buyout of Fuente and more worried about the ACC's buyout of VT to make room.
If VT is smart they'll find a way into the SEC. Chase that money and prestige and maybe w'ell get back on our feet.
I can't imagine any of our regional schools (VT, UVA, UNC, Duke, Wake, NCSU) getting on board with this.
How so?
There's no way that "Liberty fits in well academically". It would be, by far, the worst academic institution in the ACC by USNWR. 12 out of 14 ACC schools are ranked in the top 75. Liberty is currently ranked in the 300s.
It's also a fucking online school.
Liberty by all accounts is the exact opposite of what we would look for in the ACC.
I'd put the odds of them joining about 0%.
I understand where they currently sit but I have seen projections regarding their recent and pending Academic investments, especially in their medical school, religious ministry program, music program and several other academic programs combined with a massive investment in school facilities, including athletics that projects them into the Top 100 in 3-5 years.
