I think it's the Rival, for scheduling purposes this year.
Each ACC team will play its two primary rivals both home and away (a total four games) and four repeat opponents — both home and away (eight more games). After that, the remaining eight matchups will be single games — four at home, four on the road.
My guess is that UVA is the other, but since they are ranked, that shows up. (and is sort of a given...)

It actually matches the scheduled 3-year rotation announced prior to last season perfectly. I would imagine that's the case for every school, because it makes sense since we're still only playing 20 conference games.

This schedule is ripe to get shredded by one positive covid case unfortunately. Havent seen it but did the ACC publish a backup plan in the event cancellations pile up other then the either of two day projections? Is there a minimum number of games to qualify if they even can have an ACC tournament?
I call BS on Louisville being a VT rival in basketball. Just seems forced to me.
Wear and tear is going to be a major concern, especially with it being so ACC heavy at 20 games. Just another instance that I would like to see the NCAA increase the rosters to 18 players. Between free agency ( I mean the Transfer Portal), a larger number of conference games and the need to be able to develop a core of players around it, having a few more players would be greatly beneficial.

Eh, a larger roster hurts the little guys like us. I've heard that part of why women's basketball is more top heavy than the men's game is because of the extra scholarship. That's one more elite player going to UCONN or Baylor, or in the men's game Tobacco Road as opposed to Virginia Tech.

You are also aware they tried to get us kicked out because we were as bad at basketball then as UVA has been at football for the last 20 years. Since 1979, we are 8-35 against Louisville in basketball to include a lovely 6-30 record as conference opponents. The last time we beat them was 1991, that was 16 games ago.
Think I will hold to them not being much of a rival. We are just slightly worse against Duke and North Carolina then Louisville. 18.3%/17.9% vs 18.6% but at least we are 3-7 against the Dukies and 2-8 against UNCheat in the last ten meetings versus 0-10. Temple is the only other team this year that we have a worse overall record, a lowly 1-10.

Our two rivals are UVA and Miami. Louisville is merely one of the other 4 home-and-homes scheduled this season, as per the 3-year rotation announced prior to last season.

Guess they are staying up at Mohegan Sun after playing Temple and South Florida. Likely means Oregon replaces VMI, since they are no longer on the schedule on Dec 3rd although the Oregon game isnt up there yet either. All of these Mohegan Sun announcements seem to change day by day.

I knew CMY had turned over a large portion of the team but it wasnt until I just looked at the roster that I realized how much. Looking at the roster from last season, only 8 of 15 players returned.
Hunter Catoor
Wabissa Bede
Naheiem Alleyne
Grant Yates
Jalen Cone
John Ojiako
Keve Aluma
Tyrece Radford
New comers this year are
Joe Bamisile 64th ranked freshman, guard, 6'4, 195 lbs
Cartier Diarra- graduate transfer from Kansas State, 6'4, 185 lbs, averaged over 13 points a game last season
David N'Guessan- freshman Forward, 6'9, 205 lbs, 3 star out of Mt Zion prep
Gill Williamson, freshman Forward, 6'8, 195 lbs, preferred walk on that was an all state QB as well as a lacrosse player.
Darius Maddox - 92nd ranked freshman, Guard, 6'5, 185 lbs, out of Oak Hill Academy
Justyn Mutts- redshirt junior transfer from Delaware, Forward, 6'7, 230 lbs, had 11 double doubles in points and rebounds last year and scored double digits in 19 of 32 games.
Cordell Pemsl - graduate transfer from Iowa, Forward, 6'9, 250 lbs - had several injuries late in his time at Iowa so it will be interesting to see what version of Pemsl we see this year. Last year he was limited to essentially a role player, contributing 2.8 pts and 3.8 rebounds in about ten minutes per game but had much better numbers as a freskmen and sophomore before an injury derailed his junior season.
Gone are Isaiah Wilkins to Wake Forest,
Landers Nolley signed a contract with Penny Hardaway at Memphis,
PJ Horne essentially went home to Georgia,
Jonathan Kabongo had to retire due to injuries but is still at Tech finishing his degree, hopefully music works out better then basketball,
Branden Johnson graduated,
Brendan Palmer also graduated,
Going to be interesting to see how CMY melds this team together with all the new parts.
Ryan Payne also moved on to other things

Yes we did, but D'Guessan and Williamson are going to need to bulk up to compete down low in the ACC. Hopefully Pemsl is healthy and can play a big role this season while those other two grow.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
if Pemsl contributes what he did in his last 10 games of last year (approx 14mpg/4ppg/4rpg), it will help a lot
covid sucks but it's a good year to be a skinny guy trying to get bigger/stronger...essentially a free year. both N'Guessan and Williamson have good ball skills
edit: Willamson's film...I'll take all the walk-ons like this they have in the store
Not sure leap fits with Aluma, but his impact will finally count this season. He was a 7 and 7 guy at Wofford before tagging along with CMY. His biggest impact was normally a few offensive boards with quick put back baskets, saving three possessions a game normally. He also will add a bigger body down low with Pemsl, so I could see them combining as the 4 spot to contribute 12 and 12 a game, which getting a regular double double out of that spot on the floor would be huge. No longer will all the teams be able to focus on our perimeter shooters. I also think Aluma/Pemsl will be huge on pick and roll play opportunities.
In terms of contribution I am hoping Hunter Catoor becomes a more consistent contributor. Too many times last season, he would disappear. The problem here of course is where does he fit in playing time wise with Bede and Diarra both on the floor for 30+ mins a game, Cone probably taking the other 10 behind Bede. Maddox, Catoor and Radford are fighting over the remaining time on the floor. Radford finished last season with the 17th best offensive efficiency rating in the country so it will be hard for Catoor or Maddox to get him off the floor. In the last 11 games last season, Radford only had three games where he played less then 30 minutes.
It also depends how CMY approaches the 3 spot this season. Mutts was a 12/8/2 guy last season at Delaware. He is a graduate transfer so he wont have to sit out and he has two years of eligibility left, and this season doesnt count. If he is getting significant minutes, it takes those minutes more from the guard pool then the 4/5 spots. This could change though if Big Johns role stays the same as last year, you could see alot of Pemsl/Mutts/Aluma in the 4/5 and three guards. Ojiako only played more then 20 minutes in 5 games last year. His impact is obviously more defensive so CMY will have to weigh his defensive contributions versus the better offensive play from Mutts and Pemsl. It also will likely be impacted on whether Pemsl is able to stay healthy.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Still plenty of time for things to change but wasn't CMY quoted as saying Mutts & Aluma would be he starting forwards if the season started that day? My impression is that Mutts is a solid 4 on this team, not a 3, although he would be the obvious choice for a big-lineup "3"
N'Guessan is a solid 4, Aluma is 4/5 and then Pemsl & Ojiako are 5's.
Then you get Bede (1), Cone (1/2), Cattoor (1/2), Alleyne (2/3), Radford (2/3), plus newcomers Diarra (1/2), Basimile (1/2/3) & Maddox (2/3) (8 guys) competing for 120 minutes a game at the 1, 2, 3.
Gotta figure we'll run a small lineup occasionally with one of those guys at the 4 (more frequently than we see a big lineup). So maybe 125 minutes per game for this group. In a normal year 1-2 of those guys would redshirt, or maybe even transfer but this is a free year so I'm sure all these guys will see the floor at some point.
Seems like this kind of depth could be critical if anyone on the team catches COVID or has to contact-trace quarantine.. although from the nature of basketball it would seem that if one guy has a positive test, the entire team is quarantining.

I think Cattoor is a 2/3, I don't see him as having the handle to run point. You could put Radford at 2/3/4, his rebounding and defense means he can probably play 4 in a small ball or four out lineup.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Agree about Radford, he's the natural choice for playing 4 in a small lineup because of his strength and rebounding
Cattoor isn't a traditional PG but CMY's offense doesn't seem to require a traditional PG. He's not going to drive the lane off the dribble or off a screen, but he can bring the ball up and initiate the offense.
That being said, I actually don't think he will see many minutes at the "1" with Bede, Diarra and Basimile all more than capable there. I hesitate to project him as a "3" simply because of his height, and who else is available on the roster. In a small lineup he could definitely fit there.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
In years past Mutts might have been our 5 but this season with the depth of this roster and the heavy ACC schedule, I see Mutts at 6'7 as a 3. A heavy 3 but a 3 nonetheless. Will he play some 4 and 5 even depending on fouls and style of play? Sure. I just dont see that as his primary role with Pemsl and Aluma on the floor as well. There are just too many big rosters on the ACC schedule to play small ball most of the time. Obviously this will vary by opponent and who they put on the floor but Mike Young at Wofford typically used a more traditional lineup. This year he has the height to do so, especially if N'Guessan or Williamson create a role for themselves.

That's a good point about the ACC-heavy (and therefore height-heavy) schedule. Irony would be Mutts having a great season as a wing alongside Aluma/Ojiako/Pemsl ... the role that Nolley left in search of.

This team's transition with a mix of height, skillset, and the addition of some really good players with the core that stayed from last year has the makings of a: Very. Good. Team.
We will sneak up on a few teams early and then they'll figure us out. Hopefully by that time we have a team that can impose its will as it melds together.
This will be a very interesting season.
CMY has done some good work quickly.

It is amazing how quickly you can build a basketball team up in today's day and age of college basketball. Especially with the transfer portal, and some freshman being able to contribute immediately. It seems like this time last year, we were all making jokes about barely being able to field a team haha.
Good work, Mike Young. I think this team can rack up quite a few wins this year.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
It helps that basketball doesn't have an "initial counters" limit like football's limit of 25. There are no limits to roster turnover in basketball, so if a coach can recruit well enough it won't take long to field a quality team.

I'm excited for this year. Sounds like CMY has done some serious work on that roster. I'm really interested to see how Hunter came along over the offseason

Young has rounded out his OOC schedule with Longwood, Coppin State and VMI.
"The Hokies will play at Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum versus VMI on Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. ET on ACC Network, Coppin State on Dec. 19 on RSN (Regional Sports Networks), with the time TBD, and Longwood on Dec. 21 at 8 p.m. on ACC Network."
This makes me think the Oregon game went up in smoke with VMI on the 3rd, since Oregon was supposed to be on Dec 2nd.
I think this is unfortunate as Oregon would have been a much better early test for this revamped Hokies lineup.

Roanoke Times also reported a few weeks ago:
So I guess we will have 6 OOC games?
11/25 - Radford
11/28 - Temple/USF/RI
11/29 - Temple/USF/RI
12/2 or 3 - VMI
12/9 - PSU
12/18 - 12/31 2 more games
Let's take guesses on the remaining 2 games... I would guess they will be "winnable" games with minimal travel. So, Longwood and Marshall?
Based on previous seasons my guesses would be Maryland Eastern Shore and North Carolina A&T
Liberty and East Carolina?
(Ducks)
Better not lose to Radford. I can't take anymore of that shit!
Fuente isn't coaching the basketball team so we should be ok

I think it's the Rival, for scheduling purposes this year.
My guess is that UVA is the other, but since they are ranked, that shows up. (and is sort of a given...)
I believe our other rival for scheduling purposes has always been Miami
Given the odd year, it was a guess....and wasn't sure they were keeping the standard in place. It is the ACC...
I believe that means receiving votes in the AP poll, not rival.
This makes much more sense then Louisville being a rival.
UVA twice but UNC and Duke once each, which is actually typical in a normal season
It actually matches the scheduled 3-year rotation announced prior to last season perfectly. I would imagine that's the case for every school, because it makes sense since we're still only playing 20 conference games.

on paper, might be the best rebounding team we've fielded since DeVoe's last team ('75-'76)
edit: looking it up they were +10, lol; so probably not quite that good; but I'm optimistic
I believe Wilkins left the previous year. He played at Wake last year.
