Pitt Week Football Discussion

This site needs some actual football discussion. Assuming the game is played, what do you expect to see?

Rules:

1. No coach firing or hiring discussion

2. If you do not plan to watch, move to a different discussion.

I will start. Things are never as good or bad as they may seem to the fans watching. As long as the team continues to fight, I expect a win. I also think we see more QP this week and he will have the longest pass completion. Holston should be taking over some of Blackshear's snaps at running back and Blackshear needs to line up in slot. I really hope the defense continues progressing.

Bold prediction: BC will call a qb run in field goal range in a 3rd and long situation. Not because he always does but because he knows Pitt knows he always does but they don't know he knows they know. We will gain the first down because it is 2020.

I can see us losing in a manner we've never lost before...some crazy sequence of events like blocking a game winning FG attempt only to find out our head coach called timeout before the play. Oh wait...

My bold prediction?

...for Pitt. I say we embarrass ole Pat and cruelly raise everyone's hopes for a good showing against clemson.

Not sure why people think we're suddenly going to start using QP.

I personally would like to see more QP. I'm not going to go as far as to say that he should be the starter but I would like to see more of him.

I mean I agree the dude is a freak athlete but I'm not sure that putting him on the field and taking our far and away best player (minus KmfH) off the field is a great idea.

It is if we are going to run the ball every third down!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Well if we are going to use our QB's primarily as battering rams he certainly fits that bill...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
β€œI served in the United States Navy"

Fuente hinted this week that they would like to get him involved in more than just short yardage situations.

If Herbert is close to 100% it probably doesn't happen. But if we need to wear down the defense by pounding, QP works. And once their run defense pride gets the best of them hit them over the top.

QP, Holston, Herbert.
Rinse, repeat frequently.
Once they sell out on the run pound, pass for the TD.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Given our Red Zone woes, I could see this becoming a thing to do and give Hendon less hits to take.

In a week of negativity, I would also like to point out that the secondary made repeated great plays on the ball against Miami.

Going to sound like captain obvious, but there's two things I'm watching in this game:

  1. VT run game (vs Pitt DL) - If VT can run the ball against Pitt, we win. If we're forced the throw the ball more than 15 times, we're probably going to lose.
  2. Pitt passing game - I can see Pitt dink and dunking up and down the field. If VT gets stops on 3rd/4th downs, we're in good shape. Otherwise, we need to hope the offense is clicking.

Our defensive approach this year seems to be bend and bend some more and hopefully the other team screws up before taking 15 plays to score. It isn't an airtight philosophy, but overall, I think it can lead to more turnovers. I think we are due some major defensive plays.

Well put. TBH, I think it's a fine strategy if the offense is top 10 or better. Our current offense is good, but not great.

I'm not holding my breath just because of how things are going lately, Pitt's #1 rush defense and the fact that we're 1-5 at Heinz Field. On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised if the team rushed for 250+ yards and won big. *insert shrug emoji*

I expect Pitt to go for it on a couple 4th downs early because they think it's going to be easy pickings and get stuffed.

I am pretty sure that any kind of counter on our D on 4th and short would work.

Herbert returns and does Herbert things....or Cornelsen runs the ball straight into Pitt's respected front 7 over and over again. The gameday thread laments the playcalling as has become tradition.

We spend the whole afternoon getting 4 yards on 3rd and 6 type downs and lose.

I watch to see football. Don't get worked up about the score or results. It's free football which we are going to see less and less of each week until the season is called off enjoy it.

And I thought my outlook on the team was negative.

This isn't my outlook on the team it's about people being unable to help do their part to control a pandemic and the resulting shut down of college football later this season. Just look at the number of games each week getting called off.

DUDE BOO. Why do you want to talk about this?

Rule 4...no corona talk

I agree though. A few months ago we would have given anything to have any form of football now I see people proud to say they wont watch. I will enjoy every snap we get. Our games may not have turned out well this year but they have all been exciting.

I'm all kinds of Joey over here wondering why corny calls qb run up the middle on 3rd and 6.

It makes sense when you don't think about it.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

because
1) Hooker & our WR's aren't a great at passing in obvious passing downs so he's trying to avoid putting them in that situation
2) play to our strengths which is running the ball, with Herbert & Hooker regularly picking up 5+ ypc
3) often when this occurs we're in 4-down territory. pick up just 3 or 4 yards and we've got 4th & short or a slightly better FG

Things are never as good or bad as they may seem to the fans watching. As long as the team continues to fight, I expect a win. I especially liked "as long as the team continues to fight, I expect to win."

Is this week where we see Hooker and QP in the backfield at the same time?

Ut Prosim Ad Dei Gloriam

I'll be watching Syracuse/Louisville tonight, even though it's two teams out of contention for anything, it should be fun to watch.

We got Christmas shopping on Saturday, so I might miss the first half, but I really want to see the Indiana Ohio State game end if it's close.

There will be bourbon, and a slow cooked tenderloin.

I don't think we win, our OLine has not had a good couple of weeks, and we are going up against Pitt. If we can't get to the 30+ point mark, we are going to lose. Outside of the Liberty game, that seems to be our score advantage.

Bedlam followed by USC/Utah for the nightcap.

I'll check on the kids Sunday.

Why don't you skip the xmas shopping and just use the interwebs?

I hold the key (the wallet) that unlocks these doors. My wife does not, nor does she care for how much is available inside.

I'm all for masks, enforce mask rules on coaches and staff and everyone on the sideline even players while not waiting to go in the game but westing a mask in the game while not having practiced in it, no idea how it will stay on while playing football, how it will impact your vision etc seems like Tech needs to call off the game.

Tech needs to call off the game

This. We are in a freaking pandemic. There's no shame in trying to reschedule or cancel altogether, especially for a team that is out of contention for the ACCCG. Just try to keep all parties healthy as best as possible.

Is coronavirus over yet?

If we have to wear masks to play then we shouldn't play. Don't even understand how this is being considered.

Well done, well done, leg this man!

This is dumb. Just cancel the damn game if the risk is so high.

Maybe we actually see these in action this season

I told him I’d crawl on my hands and knees to be the DL coach at Virginia Tech. Now, all of a sudden, I’m sitting in this chair and I told him I’d still crawl on my hands and knees to work here. I just want to be here.
