Former Penn State football player says coach James Franklin told him not to report fight to police
As bad as we think we have it with VT football right now, I'm thankful that we dont have these problems to deal with. I'm mindful that we may just not know about them, but given the last decade that Penn State has had I'm grateful for what we have.

They are also 0-4 this season...yikes
Ain't it great
"I'm going to Sandusky you" is probably not worth saying or threatening to anyone at the school Sandusky coached at...
or to anyone ever?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
So that's where I have been going wrong.
I was waiting for this story to get posted. Hopefully this will quiet down the "replace Fuente with Franklin" crowd. This is not the first time he's shown questionable morals in his Penn St tenure.
Depends on how you look at this...
Can he win games? Yes
Can he recruit? Hell Yes
Control of the locker room? Yes
Energizes fan base? Yes
Unethical behavior? Toeing the line
Coach a win? Probably not, gotta give him good coordinators
Bargain price? If he's fired after this year, absolutely.
A drunk marmoset could probably recruit to Penn St. though. Someone with some energy would have to look up if he has a history of good recruiting.
Losing Moorhead to Miss St did not help Franklin.
Although, I'd add Moorhead to the potential list of candidates.
If you don't already, you should consider PR. That is some serious positive spin. Although, I feel like depending on how this plays out he might end up being a great replacement for Freeze. He sounds like a much better cultural fit for LU.
I work in construction sales
Franklin's buyout is $38M
he might just retire if he gets fired
He only got that good a deal because contact negotiation doesn't take place i the 4th quarter. Because if he negotiated like he coached the 4th quarter, he'd have to pay PSU when fired.
He had questionable morals at Vanderbilt as well. If I had a younger cousin that was a D1 prospect, I would not feel comfortable with him playing under Franklin.
I get the whole "he can recruit" and "he's a proven coach" but I don't want to VT to sell out whatever sense of morality we have just to win football games - we're not Liberty.
counterpoint: replace Franklin with Fuente.
Agreed. As bad as I want Fuente gone, I want to pass on a Franklin tenure here just as bad.
ahhh...nothing to see here
JoePa, is that you?
I should be getting more happiness from Penn State's suffering, but somehow the nature of the accusations makes it not something to smile about.
The nature of the accusations are indeed disturbing. A few points from someone living near the lion's den:
- Anyone I know who followed recruiting thought Micah Parsons was a bad guy from the start. Though he is supremely talented, those I know who follow PSU recruiting and were paying attention during his recruitment were hoping that he would go somewhere else. He really truly is a great linebacker and will probably be a first round pick somewhere, the concerns about his character were widespread during his recruitment.
- James Franklin doesn't abide by the longstanding mantra at PSU of 'winning the right way'. [HOAT Note: We've all seen and know that this mantra wasn't followed to a 'T' by pretty much anyone in PSU history and it's more of a guideline than an actual rule but it's still something that gets brought up]. This year was the first time a 100% PSU guy told me that 'well we might as well play by SEC rules because that's what you have to do in college football'. Franklin is that guy. Playing by SEC rules. We all knew it when he was hired but disbelief was suspended up here for a long time. I can't say whether Franklin did actually talk to Humphries about any of this, but it would not surprise me one iota if he did. Not one iota.
- I just had an extended conversation over beers with my 80+ year old neighbor, a true Penn State die hard, who thinks that there is no chance PSU beats Iowa. Soooo.... 0-5?
- PSU will not fire Franklin. Franklin will not attempt to move on after this year. VT should not pursue Franklin.
When you say Parsons is a bad guy do you mean Dez Bryant or Derrius Guice type situations? Are we talking misdemeanors or felonies?
Cause man I really wanted WFT to draft him......
Not sure the distinction there, I'm not familiar with what makes either of them a bad guy.
PSU folks thought he was a prima donna jackass that bought into his own hype.
Thanks for the info. From what I remember Dez did things in college that were more prima donna while Guice is accused of rape. I can live with a prima donna but as a WFT fan I can't have anymore press like Guice and others have brought to the organization.
Ah, that clarifies things. Definitely didn't hear from anyone that Parsons was a straight up criminal. I got the impression he was more like Terrelle Pryor, a self absorbed asshole that didn't think they had to show much respect to anyone.
Eh, give PSU a mulligan. It's not like they've tried covering up something before for the sake of winning.
Just caught up with a PSU friend of mine. Sounds like Humphries left PSU without a stellar reputation. Got kicked off the team and has already had lawsuits against the program/coach thrown out. Other players have said for years he was full of it. I'm not entirely sure that Franklin and PSU should be getting the heat on this they're getting but maybe.
I mean at this point maybe we should be rooting for PSU to part ways without a buy out on an ethical clause and we could get Franklin on the cheap? Lol
EDIT: Just saw they lost again, not sure I want a 0-5 Franklin with their talent.
We don't want Franklin. Full stop.
I mean I get this....but state penn is 0-5 for the first time in their history and I'd still take Franklin. This is a "me" issue I'm sure.
