I'm skeptical because back during one of our coaching searches I thought I read that Whit said coaches rarely go in person to interview and that most of the work is done with agents and agents of agents. And I don't see Whit interviewing while the job is still currently occupied. Doesn't seem his style.

In person meetings also right now make even less sense especially when trying to "isolate" these people as much as possible.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

And I don't see Whit interviewing while the job is still currently occupied. Doesn't seem his style.

If he knows he's buying out Fuente the day the buyout drops, he's not gonna just sit on his hands and wait until that day to start looking for the replacement just because Fuente "still has the job in the meantime."

I didn't say he wasn't doing anything. I know if he is smart (and he is) that he would have put out feelers for a while now. But he isn't flying anybody into Blacksburg while Fuente is still here. This is going to be done by agents and back channels. It gives plausible deniability for if and when stuff gets leaked.

Every AD should have an active list ready to go at any moment and when they know the time is up on the current HC, you move as fast as possible on that list.

Things a school is not going to do if they're flying a coach to interview:

Stick them on a single-prop plane, that can be publicly tracked, when they have more than one private jet that is private and can't be tracked

Hokie Club member since 2017, TriumphNIL subscriber since 2023

Football school, Women’s basketball school

I hope that we don't stick any coach, future, current, or past, on a single prop plane. Single point of failure for $$$ employees is stupid.

My dad and father in law are both pilots. My father in law owns a very nice single prop plane. They have flown countless hours in them, including their own families. Never had a problem. Being a single prop isn't a safety issue - I'd argue it's more of a luxury issue. Jets are faster and can deliver coaches you're trying to persuade to coach at your school in fewer hours. They're also more expensive to fly. Not sure how much more.

There is a regulation to the effect that if a single failure results in loss of all thurst, the aircraft's stall speed must be must 60 kts or less. This means all single engine aircraft (including jets) must met this regulation and to do this the wing must produce more lift. High lift wings (without complex devices such as slats, etc) typically are higher drag and are not used on jets as it negatively impacts speed and range. The purpose of the regulation is to allow for more control margin when attempting to conduct an emergency landing, maybe even on an improvised field. So single engines are not less safe but the single point of failure does factor into the design and creates trade offs.

I've never worked a single engine design / certification so this may not be fully correct but I hope gets the point across.

This doesn't mean that single prop planes are any less safe. I think my dad or father in law told me once that some very high percentage of small plane crashes are operator error rather than equipment issues. Like flying in clouds where you can't see and not trusting (or watching) your instruments.

I agree with your statement that single engines planes are not less safe. I was trying to explain how single engine aircraft are designed to account for that specific failure.

I figured, just wanted to clarify because of King James' comment above, about the single point of failure, so others would understand.

I really was attempting to be funny(failed miserably) and didn't mean this to dive into an course in aviation

That's why I always put the /s at the end. I like joking but have realized it doesn't always translate well.

It was a good discussion I'm glad I got to read.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Yeah I'm not complaining that my dumbass started it, it's what makes the site fun, I just want to be viewed as less a dumbest, if possible.

The rough average is 80% of aircraft accidents are pilot error.

The problem with "two engines is better than one" as a general statement is that 1) twins are often owned by pilots who have no business operating that complex of an aircraft and 2) a non-trivial number of twin-engine accidents are when the pilot still has a working engine and they panic, get distracted, or just plain screw up.

If you take pilot error out of the equation, then having two engines is obviously better than one, in case of mechanical failure.

Personal anecdote: I always say I got my "single-multi-engine" pilot certificate, because I swear I spent 95% of my twin-engine time with one engine turned off. We practiced engine failures over, and over, and over...

eh... maybe it was intentional

Not sure why you think a single prop plane can be tracked vs a jet. They both show up on radar and they both file flight plans. You're probably talking flight plans, and although you don't HAVE to file them for private flights, for safety purposes, I'd be willing to bet over 90 percent do, and the ones that don't probably are only flying in a very small area right near the airport they took off from (and that is likely to be a small airfield). You list passengers I believe in case the plane goes down they know how many people to look for. I don't know if you're required to list names of passengers or not.

Heavy "well AcKsHuAlLy" vibes here lol. If the tail number is blocked by the owner it won't show up.

You can also file under a flight ID as opposed to tail number and like you said tail numbers and flight IDs can be blocked by the owner from showing up on sites like flight aware. This is how we conduct test flights at my company to prevent tipping off competition as to what we may be working on.

Flightaware (just looked this up) blocks tail numbers from the general public. What is it about a jet vs a prop plane that makes you and other people think that a jet can block it and not a prop plane? Without getting into specifics, there is no difference between props and jets in terms of not reporting a tail number. If you don't believe me or want specifics, I'm happy to share. But that's my only point, some people seem to think props and jets are different with respect to blocking tail numbers and that's not true.

You're missing the point of Henry's post man. It's not about whether or not the a prop or jet can be tracked. It's about the fact that VT has jets that can be used privately so they wouldn't use a public prop to wine and dine a coach. You're so consumed with being right that you didn't understand the intentions of the original post.

I think you're adding in your own thing about luxury. From the quote I took from what I'm responding too, it seems pretty clear about ability to track one vs another. Also, thinking prop planes are less luxurious demonstrates you (and him if that was his point) don't know the difference between tiny little 2 seat planes you see at little airfields and planes like this or this. The jet has to be substantially larger (and WAY more expensive for a school that can't afford a recruiting staff) depending on what type of luxury you're talking about, but there are single prop planes that rival the interiors of smaller jets.

Oh my god man.

VT foundation has a couple jets that they block the public (like average joe's like you and me) from tracking on a public flight tracking website like FlightAware. They are much nicer than a single-prop planes.

That's all I was saying.

Not sure if you saw the links in my post. Some props are really nice. Not sure about the jets the VT foundation owns, but read and re-read your original post and didn't see anything about them being nicer, only about tracking, so that's what I responded to. The bigger the jet, the nicer they usually are. Found a picture of a jet the VT foundation owns - link.

Plus, I don't see any reference to a jet vs. a prop in the original tweet. Why did someone think it was a prop and not a jet to start with?

Edit: and if the point was that you think you can track props and not jets so they must have had him on a prop, that's not true so they could have had him on a jet and just not blocked it (you can block prop flight plans as well), so being able to see record of a flight tells you nothing about the type of plane.

With our donation levels, we can only afford single prop planes, of the paper variety.

Yeah I really doubt any of these coaches travel[ed] to Blacksburg. But I believe Whit is hustling to figure out the football coach situation. Until someone is formally announced, these type of rumors don't mean anything to me.

Have we ever had any leaks or evidence of Whit's doing prior to the announcement?

I could be misremembering but I think there was a lot of smoke/leaks around Fuente to VT for weeks before the news finally broke during that UVA game. That was also easier to buy into given that the job had already been officially "open" for months at that point, unlike the current situation where we're all just anticipating and hoping.

On the other hand, there were a ton of completely incorrect leaks leading up to the Mike Young hire, to the point where people were fully convinced we had already hired Ryan Odom.

I said this in the other thread too -

Whenever I see these I immediately think - Welp, now we've lost any chance with that coach. Because if this is getting out there from 'Fickell's reps' then we are either
  • Not in the running
  • Being used by the rep to get an extension and better buyout for his client

I told him I’d crawl on my hands and knees to be the DL coach at Virginia Tech. Now, all of a sudden, I’m sitting in this chair and I told him I’d still crawl on my hands and knees to work here. I just want to be here.

Let's throw a fun what-if in here. Whit is about to be announced as the ACC commissioner and won't be making the hire at all.

Yikes

It would be cool if Whit's buyout was $10M.

I'm wondering if Whit doesn't make a hire even if he's not commish because he's willing to hear out Fuente's covid excuses. To make it clear I don't agree with any of that (#Makethemove) but I do wonder if Dec 16 will pass with no news. Also google tells me the next acc commish will be Dan Radakovich and google is never wrong.

Fickell is the best hire out there, having (quality) experience rebuilding a G5 program, and having experience winning a national title as a coordinator at a blue blood (OSU).

Based on everything I've heard about him, his values, and his interests, I just don't see it happening, but I'll be very happy if I'm wrong.

Isn't his resume pretty much the same as Fu when we hired him from Memphis?

We put the K in Kwality

aside from having been interim HC at OSU, and DC at OSU. which is on a decidedly different level than TCU

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Fuente had 10 win and 9 win seasons at Memphis. Fickle (who may also be Einhorn) had two 11 win seasons and is currently undefeated at 8-0. 11 wins, while close to 10, seems like it's somewhat significantly harder to accomplish. Like there has to be increasing difficulty going from 10 wins to 11 to 12. And he maintained it for 2 years in a row. Not the same as doing the same in the P5, but still seems better than Fuente's record at Memphis. On top of the point you mentioned and recruiting Fickle has done someone else mentioned.

This is Low key one of the funniest comments Ever. Lol

February..'96...the steak: ribeye, the whiskey:Lagavulin 16, the lady next to me: a bit**.....

For a second I was like "what's funny?" I forgot about that one line. Glad you and one other person liked it lol

I know your comment is TIC, but Cincy is (was?) a way easier place to win than Memphis. Fickell will be the third coach in Cincy history to finish undefeated. 2014 was the second 10 win season in Memphis history (the first was in 1938). What Fuente did at Memphis was really impressive given their program history.

Actually, I wasn't trying to be. I was going off number of wins purely having forgotten that Memphis was a build up (in a big way). And, amusingly, 2 of the losses last year in the 11-3 season were to Memphis, the other was Ohio State. Great point about what Fuente built. Still like Fickle's recruiting history someone posted though (just looked for it and saw it was you lol).

Edit: I was serious about it seeming like there'd have to be increasing orders of magnitude in difficultly going from 10 wins to 11 to 12. Especially sustaining that year after year. Which is one reason the 10 win streak was big for us.

His Head Coach resume yes, his overall coaching resume when factoring in time as a coordinator and assistant is in a completely different galaxy though.

Fickell won a national title as a DC at Ohio State under Urban Meyer and has recruited over 35 bluechip players. I suppose Fuente's experience as an OC on an undefeated TCU team under Gary Patterson is similar, but Fuente has never recruited for a program like Ohio State.

Fuente has never recruited for a program like Ohio State.

If this is true and has been confirmed, then wouldn't this imply that the buyout with Fu is a done deal and he is definitely gone?

Or is this where we are flirting with Baylor and going to ask for Fu to do better next year?

With Derek Mason getting fired at Vanderbilt, Fuente to Nashville actually makes some sense given he coached at Memphis for three years.

Yes, please.

"Give me a fuΒ’king beer", Anonymous Genius

I... don't know what to make of this.

Would being fired from Tech and then hired at Vandy be "failing up" because SEC?
Or would it be like being traded to the Cincinnati Bengals for your career to wither and die?

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

I don't see Vandy making sense either. He needs to go to a G5 school for a few years and make them competitive then come back to a P5 school. It worked for Lane Kiffin.

In all fairness, Vanderbilt is a G5 school masquerading as an SEC school right now. The job has obvious advantages (academics + SEC + Nashville) but very little institutional support.

Didn't they get rid of their athletic department?

Whit needs to get on the phone and make this happen.

Maybe offer them a 2-for-1 kind of deal? Buy out Fuente, and we'll give ya Corny too? /s

I can just picture Whit talking to Vandy on the phone like one of those cheesy infomercials:

You will get a head coach with 5 years of Power 5 conference experience for the low price of just $10 million dollars! But wait! There's more! If you act now, we'll throw in an offensive sidekick in Brad Cornelsen!!

He needs to add a spurtle and a couple Tac lights to go with it

Give him the sweet laser tag game too. It'll be hours of entertainment for Corny.
