ACC Cancels "Key" Games leading up to ACC Championship

The ACC announced yesterday that they are canceling the Florida State-Clemson game leaving the Hokies as their final speed bump to the ACC Championship.

They also simplified things for Notre Dame by cancelling their makeup game against Wake Forest.

This means Notre Dame has already clinched its berth in the ACC Championship and Clemson gets in with a win this Saturday.

They did not however cancel Miami's game against North Carolina on the 12th so they would be required to win there in the unlikely event Clemson loses.

All teams will now be evaluated on a 9 game conference schedule even though Miami is being required to play their full conference slate.

The ACC essentially wants that primetime matchup of Clemson-Notre Dame again with the leadup of the return of Trevor Lawrence.

This would also allow the ACC to "highly encourage" a buble like environment for Clemson and Notre Dame if they clinch this weekend, improving the chances the teams are able to play on December 19th.

Guess they learned after their hopes for a perennial F$U-Miami ACCCG were dashed.

Lets be honest with each other - this isn't about money this year. This is about locking-in ND Football for the long-haul.

I hope the ACC can swing it. Maybe the peacock can swoop in and save ACCN too.

I keep hoping the conference get a CBS-SEC style sweet heart deal where the game of the week is on NBC. ND joining as a full member will happen in the next 10 years IMO.

Would the 🦚 saving the ACCN include adding the network to Xfinity? Asking for a friend.

This should be the easiest bulletin board material to motivate but unfortunately I dont think that will even make a difference. Maybe we can go beat clemson just to give Swofford a big ol F you.

Please tell us how you really feel...

Did anybody else read the title as all games from now until the ACCCG are cancelled or was that just me?

I saw this story elsewhere a few days ago and I thought that was what was happening. I think I might've even preferred it that way, sadly.

I did and was expecting our uva game to be cancelled.

It's a sad commentary on my state of mind right now that I'm mentally weighing which I'd prefer: the wahoos holding the cup for another year on a technicality (canceled game) or playing them in an otherwise meaningless game to end our season and possibly giving them a legitimate streak.

In order to get your game canceled you have to be in the running for the championship game so we good fam.

Because if you aren't in the running for a championship, then who cares if your players get Covid? If they aren't making the ACC any money then fuck 'em...

Edited the title a bit, didnt intend to mislead or raise hopes that we could just call it a season at this point.

If it was important enough to cancel the games on the 12th for two teams, it should have been applied to all of the teams.

Instead they revamped things so only the two potential ACCCG teams would sit out on the 12th now by scheduling Wake Forest to play Louisville rather then ND and FSU now closes out with Duke on the 12th and then Wake Forest on the 19th. If Miami is eliminated they will now play GT on the 19th.

Imagine if we do beat them but then Miami beats Duke and loses to UNC on the 12th or vice versa. Clemson would finish with a 7-2 conference record and Miami would finish with an 8-2 conference record. I bet then Clemson would want that game against FSU so they would win the tiebreaker over Miami. I wish we could experience the Dabo sad face....

And they would get it.

Think they basically did it to appease Dabo who has been shitting bricks about the FSU cancellation for two weeks now. And if Clemson was going to refuse to play the week of the 12th I don't see a way in which you can force ND to play a meaningless makeup game and potentially disadvantage them.

Guess my problem with it is the timing of the announcement combined with Miami not being included considering they are still alive in the current scenario. If they waited until Sunday to make the announcement, it would have been attributed soley to the ACCCG participants getting rest, but by doing it before they are showing the whole world they have already determined the result of Saturday. If Miami wins this weekend and Clemson loses, then Miami is stuck preparing for UNC on the 12th while ND can begin planning for Miami on the 6th.

I mean it's a very safe bet the result of Saturday is determined.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

They said they were going to evaluate off of 9 games now since Miami can't get to 10 before the 19th. ND and Clem both will have played 9 after Saturday, whereas due to the GT postponement, Miami needs the UNC game to get to 9. I don't disagree with you since this weekend is mostly a formality, but it does make a tiny bit of sense.

This still seems a little less shameful than B1G's plan to change their 6 game rule if O$U can't qualify for the conference championship game.

Let's be honest, if you only play six games (looking at anOSU and the PAC??) you shouldn't even be mentioned in the playoff conversation.

In all honesty, unless there's been something discussed behind the scenes in regards to the necessity for the overall records being a tiebreaker between Miami and Clemson for the ACCCG berth (if we end up doing the impossible this weekend and beating Clemson); I realllllly would have liked to have been a fly on the wall for the conversation with Miami's AD as to why their kids are being put at risk by having to play one more game than what is seemingly required at this point.

Not just Miami. They got creative to make sure all the other teams maximized use of the 12th and even the 19th. Means more TV slots filled. It actually turns into an advantage for Miami if Tech beats Clemson as they would only have to win one of their two remaining games to get into the ACCCG. Otherwise it means all the teams can keep playing and practicing more football until the 19th, considering alot of these teams are not going to get bowl games with so many cancellations on that front.

At this point I wouldnt even be surprised to see the ACC schedule additional games to replace Bowl games either within conference or bringing in teams from other conferences, just for television viewing. Not like the college stadiums are being used for anything else that time of year.

This is what I love about college football. Best life lesson, life isn't a meritocracy, even when it should be and easily made to be one, it isn't. You can do everything right and still lose.

When TL breaks his hand or leg on Saturday they'll be like "ah sh**".

I say we decide to postpone the game because of COVID like FSU did. Screw up their schedule.

#Let's Go - Hokies

So if that happens and Clemson doesn't play on the 12th, who gets in: 8-1 Miami or 7-1 Clemson?

It would be Miami, right? Hahah

Best hope is that ND and Clemson get into the dance since ND is part of the conference this year, we need are share of those monies for a buyout...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

BYU getting Coastal and possibly Liberty the following week might throw a wrench into 2 same conference P5 teams, outside of A&M. Cincy is still on the outside, too.

Hmm... committee picking between a 1 loss Notre Dame and an undefeated BYU πŸ€” wonder who they'll go with

The more I think about it the more it enrages me, if I were Miami's AD I'd have swofford on the phone screaming my ass off at what a BS play this is. How the hell is anyone outside of the big boys supposed to have a chance when the leagues are literally paving the path for clemson and ND at this point. Hell even the big 10 are showing their true colors now to keep ohio state in it. This smells of the biggest pile of shit imaginable, think if the VT and Clemson game goes to the wire and a big call comes up you think the ACC officials are gonna hurt clemson?

You are assuming that anyone at Miami cares. Or understands.

Smart move. Makes financial sense in the short term and the long term.

The level of butthurt in this thread is kind of amusing. What about poor Miami?!? Miami sucks and only won because Fuente has no killer instinct.

What financial advantages are there to this? The hope both ND and Clemson make the playoffs so a minor bump from them getting travel costs paid. (Conferences don't get more especially with ND only being a temporary member)
