Lion, Lion, Pants on Fire
The Hokies come into this contest having moved up to #15 in the latest AP Poll. Coach Mike Young is going to need to keep his team focused amongst the hoopla that comes with their ranking. This is the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge game. Hopefully he reminds his Hokies about the last time these two teams faced off. The Hokies went up to Penn State in 2018 and looked sleepy early and lost 63-62. The Hokies are 6-3 against Penn State going into their tenth meeting. The Hokies come into this matchup 4-0 with their most recent win over VMI.

Jim Ferry is the interim head coach following the resignation of Pat Chambers in October after an investigation for misconduct. He has been an assistant for three years prior to his interim promotion. Ferry has been a head coach at all three divisions, including Plymouth State (DIII), Adelphi (DII), LIU (DI) and Duquesne (DI). He is 316-266 in his head coaching career. The Nittany Lions were a surprising 21-10 last season. Penn State comes into this contest 2-1, with wins over VMI by 21 and a buzzer beater 3 over VCU. In their most recent contest they had an 8 point lead with 2 minutes to go and got dominated inside by Seton Hall to lose 98-92 in Overtime.
Coach Ferry had forward Lamar Stevens, Forward Curtis Jones, Center Mike Watkins and two role players graduate. Most notably, Lamar Stevens, who averaged 17.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. The five departures accounted for nearly 50 % of the Nittany Lions scoring last season. Losing Watkins is a big hit underneath defensively.
Ferry has four incoming freshman and one transfer who was cleared to play without sitting out. Caleb Dorsey, DJ Gordon, Dallion Johnson, and Abdou Tsimbila all are three star recruits. The transfer is Sam Sessoms from Binghamton. During his two seasons with Binghamton, Sessoms played in 62 games and averaged 19.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game in his final year with the Bearcats. The team returns Jamari Wheeler and Myles Dread return in the backcourt, and John Harrar upfront.
Expect under Coach Ferry for Penn State to play at an extreme pace, using transition, pressing, and an invasion of passing lanes. Penn State will shoot a large number of threes. Penn State's tempo was second-quickest in the Big Ten a year ago with Ferry basically running the offense. Most would consider it run-n-gun.
Defensively, the Nittany Lions play ¾-court press back to a zone. He expects his team to have more possessions because of the way they play. They focus their zone on the perimeter which leaves them open to drives to the hoop and interior scoring.
Offensively, Coach Ferry puts an emphasis on up-tempo possessions, expecting crisp ball movement and clean passing which seems counterintuitive to the fact they currently only play a rotation of 7-8 players. They will need to either slow the pace or find another regular contributor to avoid late game collapses.
Nittany Lions Backcourt

Jamarri Wheeler - #5, 6'1, 170 lbs, Senior Point Guard averaging 8 ppg, 5 rpg, 4.3 apg and 2 spg. Shooting 42% from outside but 50% from the free throw line.

Myles Dread– #2, 6'4, 220 lbs, Junior averaging 8.3 ppg, 3.3 rpg, and 1.3 spg coming off the bench as the secondary ball-handler behind Wheeler

Sam Sessoms – #3, 6', 180 lbs, Guard, Junior transfer from Birmingham, coming off the bench but is the second leading scorer, averaging 13 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 4 apg, and 2 spg. Shooting 40% from outside and 71% from the line.

Izaiah Brockington, #12, 6'4, 200 lbs, Junior averaging 10.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 1 apg, and 1 spg. Shooting 25% from outside and 80% from the line.

Myreon Jones- #0, 6'3, 180 lbs - Guard, Junior, averaging 11.7ppg, 2.3 rpg, 3.3 apg, and 2.3 spg. Shooting 29% from the floor, 21% from outside but 90% from the free throw line.

What to expect from Penn State?
As a team the Nittany Lions are shooting a surprisingly low 34% from the field on 32 attempts per game. They have struggled significantly from outside, especially against VCU and Seton Hall, who pressured the perimeter.
This lack of production from outside has had one significant side effect though. It revealed how important Seth Lundy is going to be to how Penn State fairs this season. He played sparingly as a freshman with two entrenched Seniors ahead of him on the roster. This season he represents 27% of Penn State's scoring. More a wing then a forward but still has defenses guessing on how he wil attack with a solid drive to the rim or a spot up jumper.
Penn State struggles defensively inside, getting outscored 54-30 in their game against Seton Hall. Seton Hall was patient getting the ball inside to its two bigs. The game wouldn't have been close if Seton Hall could have done better then 6-21 from outside.
Penn State has suffered a 76-51 attempt deficit at the free throw line. That's 25.3-17 average per game. This creates a huge potential scoring advantage if it continues.
Penn State will likely play most of the game with four or five guards on the floor at all times, trying to get out in transition for odd man rushes to be able to go to the rim or kick back to open shooters. Finding a quality shot in a half-court offense has been tough this season.

The Hokies
The Hokies may consider approaching this game with a methodical pace, moving the ball, finding their best shot. Slowing the pace with Aluma and Pemsl on the floor together could seriously challenge the entire Penn State game plan. The Nittany Lions have fouled their opponents 22 times a contest with four players averaging three or more fouls per game. Virginia Tech will be the most skilled and physical offensive opponent they have faced this season.
Both teams have struggled with turnovers in this early season games, both averaging more then 11 turnovers per contest. Controlling possession will be a major factor in this game.
Tech has steadily improved rebounding game to game and is averaging 6 more rebounds than opponents. This rebounding edge will likely continue in this contest although Penn State's guards are pretty big bodies.
The Hokies defensively need to get back on defense and force Penn State to work for their shot. The Nittany Lions, even though they have an experienced roster seem to be rushing up bad shots or being forced into one as the shot clock winds down.
Will we see a second half burst from Diarra in this contest or Diarra at all? Hopefully he makes it to his tests this week. The Graduate transfer brings that punch of energy and by driving to the basket, alters how defenses space the floor, creating openings for other players, specifically on the perimeter.
Another big question is how much we see Jalen Cone, the Hokies best shooter last season. He seemed a step behind in his first game back. He had several lazy passes at the top of the key leading to at least one critical turnover and points for VMI. 14 minutes, 3 points, 1 rebound. Need this to get better quickly, especially as we close in on ACC play.
The Hokies have become less dependent on the perimeter, bringing their per game total down to 22.3 attempts per game. Its still nearly 40% of their total shots this season. The Hokies are currently shooting 46% overall but a meager 34% from the perimeter.
Highlight of the VMI Game
Got some dudes who can soar 👀#StoneByStone | #Hokies 🦃 pic.twitter.com/FA20AiASK9— Virginia Tech Men's Basketball (@HokiesMBB) December 4, 2020
Keve Aluma once again picked up his teammates with a double-double. 17 points, 12 rebounds, 1 block, and 2 steals.
In Closing
The Hokies work the ball inside, win the rebounding battle and outscore the Nittany Lions by double digits in the paint.
If the Hokies can keep Penn State off-balance then they should find a significant edge at the free throw line. Hopefully Aluma shot about 1000 free throws since the VMI game after going 7-13 at the line.
Aluma and Pemsl definitely finish in double digits in this game. Radford, Alleyne and Diarra finish will also be on the perimeter of it. Cattoor will find space to shoot outside and knock down at least three triples.
Hokies still look slow but it will be by design. Penn State can't overcome Aluma down low, Hokies win 71-65.
For those wondering about John Ojiako:
Mike Young just shared on Tech Talk Live that John Ojiako suffered a "little meniscus tear" before the season.Young says he got it cleaned up last week and the hope is he can return against Miami on 12/29.#Hokies— Jake Lyman (@LymanJake) December 8, 2020

HOKIES!!
I don't despise Penn State basketball the way I do Penn State football. And I honestly don't follow basketball at all. But it is still Penn State so (INSERT THE ____-EM THAT'S WHY) image that I won't look up on my work computer.
got you fam.
Thank you very much!
This is the least offensive thing the Smlltwnsthrnlwyr Law Office, LLC googled today.
ltrpeter killing it with the pic selection.

First the big catch shot
Then the "oops I crapped my pants" coupled with "have you ever really just looked at your hand, man? I mean, really looked at it?" shot
And finally, the "I've never held a bow in my life, but...you looked" shot
^^^^^PLAID^^^^^
There really were some easy pickings today....excellent add on the Big Catch
Did I miss tip? What's the score?
/s
All knotted up right now in an early nailbiter
ESPN shows it still at 0-0.
Shooting must really suck...or defense is awesome.
Thanks for the write-up. I hope VMI scared them enough that they knuckle down and play a little better tonight. I would love to see a 83-65 score for the good guys.
How do we feel about -5.5?
Unpopular opinion warning: Weekday 9pm tip off is as inconvenient as a noon kick off.
I'd argue its way more inconvenient than a noon kickoff. That's like bed time for some of us. Noon just means I have to wake up early.
Wait, you normally sleep by 9PM and wake up after noon the next day?!
or is noon the bedtime?
As a parent to a pair of boys under the age of 8 I 100% disagree with this assessment. The later the better.
CMY would agree with you per TTL
I can stream the game on Monitor #2 while playing Destiny or any other computer game on Monitor #1....
9pm tips are legit.
both of these times are great for us west coast alums. The 9AM brunch game and the 6PM just after work game.
I miss being on Mountain Time. Hands down the best time zone for sports.
Should we start tailgating for basketball games now?
What do you mean "start"?
Something to look forward too with the state of football right now
That first twitter pic has me all like

Where are we going if this goes to ot
And BC Minn goes to OT. Will our game be delayed?
looks like ESPN3
Sorry ESPNNews.
FYI it's on live with the ESPN app.
The sloppy and sluggish play has carried over from VMI
This is awful. Should have called a timeout 8 points ago
That timeout was about 3 minutes late
Welp....this one is over.
Scored the first 3. And missed every shot since. Terrible looks, ball movement. Terrible defensive.
17-0 run. Down 14.
This is terrible. Game might be over 5 minutes in. Don't understand CMY not calling a timeout sooner. 5 turnovers already for 8 PSU points.
Nobody looks comfortable shooting tonight and bede looks uncomfortable even bringing the ball up the court. Horrendous start to the game and being 14 down 7 minutes in is not good
I feel like odds makers just like to fuck with us
oh boy! long slow dig out of this hole
What an awful start all the way around. Turnovers, no penetration, bad defensive rotation, Bede having no idea what to do with the press.
Ped State on a 17-0 run.
I hate that first half bucket in cassell, always feel like it is super lose
That was not an ideal start. Penn State is on fire and we look worn out and confused. Interested to see how we respond after the timeout.
Is it just me or does CMY typically try to let us play out of the funk early in games? This one was too long
Yeah he did but there are plenty of decent players in there they all were laying bricks though
Bede has to move the ball with sooo much more pace.
You cannot beat a pressing team by methodically passing it back and forth upcourt.
Break the press, get a numbers advantage, make quick passes and get easy baskets. This is ugly, its like we completely didn't expect them to defend this way.
PSU shooting 75% from 3.
I don't care who the team is that shooting % won't last. As long as we can weather this storm we can climb back in like we are doing.
If you leave their top shooter as open as we have been all game, he'll keep dropping them
Cone came to play!
Defensive rotation is really awful
Better but still really really poor ball control
We really need the defense to step up and the bigs to start cooking inside
Apparently we are trying a new Defensive strategy tonight--leave them so wide open that they become disoriented.
Its......not working.
Trading contested 3's for wide open jumpers is not a recipe for success.
Cone will cool off as well. We have not had great looks. Need to change the approach on offense.
Defense is not prepared for the fast pace. Oit of position and not recovering well
That was the first good defensive possession there need more of those and some solid looks on offense
We look like unmotivated shit tonight
Along with the other night against VMI. There's something about playing at home with no fans I suppose.
I think they got that locker room talk from Fuente. You know, the one that goes "You guys are doing excellent in the classroom and in the community. No need to worry about game planning or getting motivated to play hard tonight. You've already won in my book!"
Getting mugged inside and no whistles.
What are we actually trying to do on offense? We look like we have no idea and nobody wants to take a shot
Bede seems way to passive when trying to beat the press
We are getting run off the court this first half. Our defense is slow and completely flat footed. Our off the ball movement on offense is looking a little too much like it did during ACC play last year.
Penn St is hitting shots but we are leaving them so wide ass open that they're going to hit them. And we are just a turnover machine so far.
And that's why they are more than doubling our score with less than 6 mins left in the half. Not good
need some paint touches and some kick outs.
STOP TURNING THE BALL OVER!!!!
If there's anything about this team I'm disappointed in this year it's our sloppy ball handling. Our offense is a turnover machine.
At this rate they will be up by 20-25 by halftime
Pemsl get hammered and then over the back. But no whistle. Can't believe how bad this game is being called. The team isn't playing well, but they also aren't getting any breaks.
There were fouls, one flagrant on both ends of the court there with no whistle. Going to be a really long game if the officials allow the mugging to continue. PSU should have at least a half dozen more fouls right now.
Basically, we're getting out-hustled. They want it more than we do.
So, unranked next week?
In hindsight of the VMI and this game we should never have been ranked to begin with. Our ability to get the ball in the bucket has been abysmal.
Well... this is not what I expected to see when I turned the game on.... wtf????
Penn state can't miss but our defending has been sloppy. The refs ain't helping though
Our ranking is too high and Penn State is good. It's pretty simple.
Sorry, it was me again. Had the channel on. Wife got home and turned on a hallmark movie when she saw tech wasn't on yet. I have fixed everything. We should turn it around now.
Yep, that's enough of this game for me
Have a good evening, everyone
This is what I expected from the 'nova game
Have to finish these and 1 opportunities, thats are third easy finish botched
We might need to push the pace to hope penn state get cold at some point
Free throws seem difficult for us this season 🤔
Only at home
I'm sitting here dumbfounded at how poorly our FT shooting is. And, what's the first half shooting % comparison? It feels like 75% them to 25% us. Just horrible.
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
4 or 5 missed free throws so far
I could shoot 75% from 3 if I'm as open a PSU guys are
I'm not saying we are going to win, but there's absolutely no way PSU shoots this well all game.
Conversely, I'd love to know both our FG % and our FT% at home versus on the road. WE've been awful at home.
It feels like they're shooting roughly 60-70% and we're shooting big old double zeros
Most players at this level can hit shots when they are as completely uncontested as we are allowing tonight. Especially Power 5 teams with at large tournament potential
We aren't playing great defense, but this is an over exaggeration. Even the shots where we are closing, the shots we are contesting are going down.
At least we get to play on the end with the bigger hoop in the second half.
Out played, out coached, out everything
Radford fouled there but again no whistle
We look like our football team this half.
Diarra had both arms hit in the lane but its a travel
5 on 8 tonight.
I really don't understand that call. The ball was moving, and bouncing off the floor. It either hit the hands of the PSU player, or they hit Diarra on the hands. Either way, Diarra has a right to gather the ball and keep his dribble, which he did. He was as mystified with the call as we were. Just poor officiating. And the calls are not equaling out whatsoever.
That was NOT a travel. Really bad call.
Missed the first 15 minutes, came in to psu looking like they are playing thug ball. Looks like we can't get a break, and they can't miss.
Diarra is a mess with the ball in his hand
And now two dumb fouls to end the half
That might have been on purpose. Short clock, and not in the bonus. Keeping them fro. Setting up the last shot play.
And here I thought that Hokie basketball was going to save me from a complete disaster of sports a season. But I guess it'll have to be the Washington Football Team!
We are a soft team. And perhaps that's a product of being in the ACC where they tend to call things way more tight than in other conferences, but we've always struggled when teams get physical with us, even going back to the Buzz years. We are a finesse team that just can't handle getting bodied, it really throws us off our game. Seemingly always has.
That should fall squarely on the coaches, then. Nothing stopping them from practicing physical basketball, especially since we haven't gotten to conference play yet.
Dunno if I'd say that but the refs aren't calling anything so we need to adjust. Unfortunately we don't have anyone like jrob who can create easier chances to fight the physicality
1-7 from the FT line.
10 turnovers.
Those two stats are all you need to konw.
And no turnovers forced worth PSU having 14 points of turnovers.
Guess the team didn't want to see me go streaking😔
ACC not looking like the best BBall conference in the land in the Big Ten challenge.
Think Miami is keeping us from getting swept.
1 for 7 from the charity stripe is completely unacceptable.
miami came back from 18 down at the half to beat purdue. maybe we can come back from 19 down. one can hope.
Some 1st half stats:
Shooting
PSU-51.4%
VT- 34.6%
3pt
PSU- 46.2%
VT- 30.8%
FT
PSU- 0% (0/0)
VT- 14.3% (1/7!!!!!)
Turnovers
PSU- 0
VT- 10
We need a better plan to attach their press. We are wasting half of every possession just trying to get across the time line. Dribbling into the double team and looping backward cross court pass does not generate much offense.
Another And 1 opportunity wasted
WIDE OPEN SHOTS
See ya folks.
This game is over
"Heavy traffic" read fouled as he drove
They can't ducking miss and we can't hit.
Don't we do this every season?
And now after the Gatorade bath on Lane Saturday, we have the imaginary bow and arrow at Cassell
this is absurd.
How exactly did we beat 'Nova, and how did PSU lose to Seton Hall?
The blessing here is this kick in the ass is early in the season and isn't an ACC game.
Well hopefully this is a one off and next time we won't let a team get a big lead before the under 15. I don't think penn state have missed in the last five trips meanwhile nobody can shoot in orange. This game is dusted five minutes into the second half.
Game is effectively over unfortunately. They need to get their heads screwed on right. Press has interfered with the offence badly.
They literally are throwing the ball blindfolded into the basket and hitting everything. I mean they can't miss, it's like throwing a ball into the ocean. Geez...
In other news penn state have confirmed the time at that end of the court is not in fact messed up as they're making it look easy
Welp, I'm done for tonight
Just hope it's a learning moment for the team
12 points left on the floor on And 1 dont even matter since no one can play defense tonight
Bede is having one of his worst games I've ever seen, completely falling asleep time and time again ball watching.
Surprised ESPN hasnt switched to a real game, any game
For the love of .....two different Hokies got hammered there
Then they call that shit on Pemsl
And then that gets a whistle???!!!???
Consistency is over rated
Refs are evening up the fouls now with bogus calls while our team continues to get hacked.
If we shut them out for the rest of the game we might win. Maybe.
These refs are calling an awful game. Somehow that was a blocking foul yet pemsl gets mugged on the other end and the red doesn't even blink
Hokies have 8 personal fouls, penn st 12. Hokies been to the line 11 times, penn st 2.
The refs are working on that now.
Wow never touched him up or down. That was really terrible
Welp, time to empty the bench.....halftime gets after ya
We don't play well against thug ball. These refs have screwed up the team. The lions can't commit a foul on defense but we get whistled for air blocks.
Goodnight guys. Go Hokies
The officiating has been ugly but our offense has been so lethargic. Bede does not want to try and play the high court press at all and it's working so well for penn state.
And then we have to see the Klempson Disney movie ad? Like they needed any more cache to sell the program.
Not sure how Radford touched him from the floor
Penn State came in averaging 22 fouls a contest. Now we wonder how that number isnt higher
At least we're not Duke...
Is this a q3 or q4 loss?
Diarra just got stiff armed but nothing to see here
Another Hokie laid out with no whistle, should have been reviewed for a flagrant
He hit him on the head and the ref was 8 feet away and was fine with it. Hard to win when you're at a 3 man disadvantage
Yeah, hit him in the head in the act of shooting and he has to pick himself up less then three feet from the official and the official gave him the little play on shoo wave....
Did Cattoor even play? Seems like they should have put him in when we're we're stone cold early to see if he could spot up and hit a few threes.
Post-game Coach Young said Cattoor has strep throat. Said his covid test was negative.
We really need to find someone to help cone out beyond the arc or teams are going to start ignoring the threat
We need to not play Diarra and give all those minutes to Cattoor. He plays better defense, controls the ball better and can shoot the three.
It's still really early, but I kinda have to say, Diarra has been a disappointment. This is not the kind of player I expected when he transferred to us.
#makethemove
Am I doing this right?
No. Wrong thread. /s
Outside of getting the team getting hyped up and taking it to Nova, this game sort of tracks with what I've seen from the other games with this team so far in that unless Aluma is straight balling out, we really struggle to generate any kind consistently dependable offense. Some of that maybe scheme and chemistry related since they aren't really use to playing together yet, some of it is some guys just missing shots, but I also think some of it is Bede just isn't a good enough PG. He's a fine player, we just need more. But unlike the other games this season, the defensive effort tonight was really poor all around. Just a general lack of energy. You'll never win games with that kind of effort, especially so when you're struggling to work out some kinks on offense.
A lot of posts are about open shots on D, and that was a problem, but to me the biggest issue was the press. We mostly had the ability to fight through the press but looked so frazzled from it we either couldn't run an offense or committed a turnover. Also refs seems very tickytack about our ball handling and contact fouls but didn't seem to blow the whistle both ways... Refs didn't cost the game but didn't help our shattered confidence
Penn State was having an excellent game shooting. It's hard to win when every three thrown up goes in. It's even harder to win if you don't produce on offense.
The fouling was rough, but we can't blame the whole game on that. We didn't do enough to offset how well things were going for them.
The fouling was inconsistent, on paper they still called more fouls on PSU. If they called all the fouls they committed it would have three times that number on PSU with at least three technical fouls.
It didn't help that we were not shooting well, and they were on fire. The refs and rough play didn't help our confidence in shooting.
I will also say this, it seems like for the last 10 years or so we have not been able to push any offense against the press well.
True... I think I was so put off by Penn State not missing and us simultaneously not hitting that I ignored the officiating.
Yes Penn St made a lot of shots, but a good bunch of those were off of "turnovers" where the VT player was fouled resulting in a transition opportunity, and out of position VT defenders.
If a defense gets away with fouling inside, then the offense has to adjust, and becomes less efficient. Shooting becomes more apprehensive - resulting in missed shots. If the fouls had been called - Penn St players that were making shots may have been in foul trouble - and off the floor.
Does consistent, correct officiating make up for a 20 point deficit? No - but what happens as a result of that officiating might.
It seems like Penn State always has our number.
Yup, 3 losses in a row to them now...
ugh... I miss GIFtory...

Why can't we have nice things...?
The team is fine they just really Fuented up that game last night. Recover, learn, and move on.
yeah - assuming we have a regular regular season we have plenty of time to learn and make-up for that performance last night.
