Anyone started a rough draft writing of SB Nation's Collapse episode of the VT episode?

Is VT become bad enough to get our own Collapse episode of falling so far?

meh.... defeatism. Not my cup of tea

VT, like pretty much any team, is the right hire away from success. Unlike most teams VT has facilities and a budget to elevate that right hire to greater success.

We do have solid facilities, and redistributing the on-field staff salary budget we could probably swing some high level coordinators, etc. However, we are are still playing catch up and way behind the tier above us (and many of our peers) on support staff/off field analysts. We need a good hire and targeted investment in getting our football program up to date with support staff.

true but that's not going to change in the next decade at least. VT needs a few more billionaire alumni to call on.

or a reprioritization of funding like eliminating a few non rev sports so we have more money to put into our revenue driver

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

No, its more about the mental drive of the coaches and the fans

When will VT have two 5 star players on the same roster. When will VT have a player be a finalist for an award.

Our coaches havent recruited the players we need or used our current players to the next level to bring in great talent

We have watered down our best players, and our expectations

This year Herbert is a Top Running Back in the country and yet he's not used enough. Last year was Damon Hazelton or Tre Turner

As I've said on here for years VT hasnt played athletics like a Champion, or Clemson

It used to be that we always said VT wasnt a Blue Chip like Bama but atleast we were a good ACC team on the same level as Clemson.

Now we all think clemson is ahead/above us.

This year's report summarizing the 2017-18 fiscal year generated revenue of $98 million an $11 million increase from the revenue generated by the athletic department in 2016-17

  1. The biggest areas of year-to-year growth for Virginia Tech were in ticket sales (up from $17.3 to $19.4), It's the first time since 2007 the department brought in more than $20 million in contributions and most money the department has generated in ticket sales.
  2. contributions (up from $15,6 to $22.1)
  3. and media rights (up from $22.4 to $25.2).

Clemson budgeted its revenue for the 2019-'20 FY at $127 million

------

Compare that to The Glory Days of 2011,

Virginia Tech ranked 34th nationally in revenue, producing just over $70.7 million in 2012, up from $66.9 million in 2011. The Hokies also had just over $66.9 million in expenses last year, up from $62.5 million.

  • North Carolina -- $82.4 million (25th)
  • Virginia -- $80.8 million (27th)
  • Virginia Tech -- $70.7 million (34th)
  • Clemson -- $70.0 million (37th)

In 2013 A half-dozen of Wake Forest University's most influential and well-heeled donors sat in an Athens, Ga. restaurant after touring UGA contemplating the Demon Deacons' football future.

After that meeting Wake was determined to win, and investing in winning

As I said, it's gonna take VT having more very wealthy donors that want to engage to win. Right not VT does not have many of those.

Now we all think clemson is ahead/above us.

Not thinking it. They are above us. You illustrated that in their budget.

I believe VT can win championships but its not gonna be perennial until we have that kind of budget. At the moment we can only make runs certain years and should have a winning, competitive team year in, year out. That's the reality.

Two 5* recruit, whoa nellie, we have 5 total in this history of recruiting.

  1. Kevin Jones
  2. Marcus Vick
  3. Macho Harris
  4. Tyrod Taylor
  5. Kendall Fuller

If any coach at VT brings in multiple 5* recruits I am going to assume that we are going to forgo some scholarships in the future. How about we start with 1 5* and some note 4 star recruits.

It's never going to happen with Whit as the AD. Besides that the amount of money the athletic department would save is an order of magnitude off of what it would need to really make a difference.

$2 million doesn't make Virginia Tech football a serious contender in the ACC. It's an unserious suggestion with no chance of occuring.

2 million dollars a year doesn't improve spending on our Coaching staff isnt that what everyone bitches about? What am I missing here. It literally frees up 2 million dollars a year.

How is this unserious? Our what we hope to be our peer literally just did this.

Cutting sports like Clemson to win football games is like getting a haircut like Usain Bolt to qualify for the Olympics.

Yes, dollars matter. But Clemson's football success isn't because they don't have track.

I do art stuff.

Really like the term 'Targeted Investment' - I think VT has the resources to jump back to the top 15-25 teams, but we have to use resources very wisely; there's about 13 SEC schools and 12 B10 schools that have significantly larger annual budgets than us. It doesn't mean we can't compete, but it does mean we have less margin for error.

yeah i took his meaning as being top 10. We have enough to be top 25 team now.

We do have solid facilities

I assume you are talking about football facilities?
TSL would disagree and thinks it'll take a while to get up to speed... Since they are on campus sanctioned media I'm guessing they at least have some basis to that opinion.
247 doesn't have us in their top 25 facilities ranking

Football school, Women’s basketball school

Bill Roth said that Baylor has better facilities. Baylor!

Our locker room was nice but its been 10 years old, which is ancient compared to a lot of places. Heck the carpet looked like it was from the 70s when they installed it.
The Beamer Barn is great if you're a punter, but if not then what does it have over lots of other schools?
I'm not sure the weight room has seen an update lately.

The terrible truth about college football is that there is so much money with cheap labor that they have to spend it on something so facilities are constantly being updated.

HC = ABS (always be selling)
AD = ABB (always be building)

The weight room was updated in the spring, but it sucks by now. It's a few months old.

Some one probably has a newer weight room /s

The facilities argument is an excuse for Fuente not recruiting in the top 50. We have plenty of luxury boxes in Lane, a great home crowd, a top notch indoor facility, a huge weight room that is less than 12 years old, and a refurbished merryman, with new, double the size weight room area. We have a brand new nutrition center that is the largest in D1. We have broken ground on a 180 million dollar ballers dorm. It's a lame excuse. We can't find a good DT, so it must be because we don't have as many jet tubs as oregon, of course.

I didn't say anything about Fuente. Fuente should be fired. Perhaps it is because I brought up TSL who are historically Fuente defenders... But I think the facilities piece needs to be evaluated every year independently of the head coach.
Let me ask you this: Do you think VT deserves to be on this list?

TSL was also pushing loudly a "other D1 offers" recruiting metric to justify Fuente improving recruiting- which is total horsehit and played out that way. Coleman wrote an absurd article " 18 of the top 26 recruits ever" were signed by Fuente or some nonsense garbage. They are also wrong about facilities.

Facilities are constantly a moving target of depreciating values. Once something is built it's old. Some programs have been at the top for ages though. That image of Bama's therapy pool is actually quite old comparatively. On the other hand, Clemson has had major overhaul and at least on this list is number 1.

But to answer your question, do I think we need to be on this list to win recruits and games? No. Look at Kentucky and Illinois, 12 and 11 respectively. They ain't winning BCS championships anytime soon, let alone conference ones. Michigan has sucked as for years now. Oregon State is a great place but can only make runs here and there. Same with Texas Tech and TCU. Washington had it's best possibility in decades and couldn't get over the hump. Northwestern? nope. For all the oil money in Texas, they have been shit more than not recently. Tennessee hasn't done anything recently. South Carolina, lucky Shane, is no 5 but hasn't made a BCS bowl... ever as far as I can remember.

So with respect to the 247 peeps that put the list together and the TSL crew that may not think VT facilities can compare, being on subjective top 25 facilities lists does not automatically ensure recruits or championships.

VT's facilities are actually good. They may not be this list worthy but they are good. What they aren't are cool. I've delved into the design and planning of facilities at VT many times here on TKP and in my professional opinion they massively overpay for low quality design. Construction is great, Design and planning is piss poor.

So yes, the Beamer Barn may look unappealing but it actually is a good facility. It's in the wrong location planning wise due to shoddy planning review by VT and the design is boring as hell. But it's a good facility.

Yes, I am specifically talking about Football facilities. We are by no means leading the pack, but we do have some modernized upgrades like the indoor practice facility (which over time have become more and more common, as expected). We have also been undergoing multiple projects (weight room expansion/renovation, Football offices facelift in 2019, etc.) to modernize some of the offices and shared spaces for the players.

I used the term "solid" to describe that our facilities are not garbage in the P5, they are good enough for us to be recruiting in the 20-30 range, and we certainly have areas where need to continue to update, modernize, and if possible, innovate. Solid is enough for me to say it's not an excuse to be losing the recruiting battles we are to other mid-tier and lower-tier P5 schools. Now does it hurt us when we are going after elite prospects? In some cases it certainly does.

Most likely will be a transition piece of moving from football to basketball where we are looking pretty good...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
β€œI served in the United States Navy"

Was VT ever relevant enough to get an episode like the others on that link?

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I don't know basketball, but we were absolutely as relevant if not more so than Cam Newton's Carolina Panthers.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

I mean Cam Newton won MVP, leading the Panthers to 15-1 record and a Superbowl appearance.

Vick was a Finalist, leading Tech to a National Championship game

Jacob Grove was recognized as a unanimous All-American and our only player award as the best Center in the Nation awarded the Rimmington Award. He was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the 2004 NFL Draft

And yet in 2019 what does tech have. A collapse in the last 10 years

I'm pretty sure Corey Moore won the Nagurski and Lombardi awards as well.

I think you are far more likely to see them do one on FSU, that is far more of a dramatic collaspe. National Champs in 2013, playoffs in 2014 to a 2-6 season in 2020 and 3 coaches in 4 years in there too.

Tech's fall mirrors many others across the sport, having sustained success and then changing coaches for one reason or another and that next coach failing. Its really not that unique.
