Very sweet faciity. Really liking this.
Reminds me of D2, if D2 was upgraded nicely
I miss D2. The food was better other places, but lots of good memories eating there with friends and the breakfast was great
What is D2?
Sus
the 2nd male of a 3-way
wait, is D2 not a thing anymore??
That is the one where they are team USA and the coach is banging the trainer on the bad guys team right?
via GIPHY
You must have graduated from VT before 2004?
Yeah D2 was not a thing late 90's when I was there.
Deitrick, Owens for us, Hillcrest for the team in my day. You guys don't know how good you have it now.
Forgot Shultz.
Fish, all of us former cadets try to forget Shultz for the rest of our lives. At least, until a word like, I don't know, "scrod" hits us in the face and we start to remember again and head for the commode.
And who could forget quarterly steak night? (Not a cadet but I lived in Monteith my first two years.). Over the years, I've developed a weird nostalgia for Shultz, in an "I survived" kind of way. Maybe it helps that I never had scrod.
Sort of, I graduated in 2004.
So what I can find online, since only Alum attempted at answer the question, is that D2 is just what was formally known as Dietrick? And now they entire building is Dietrick Dinning Hall, with D2, Express and Deet's inside of the building.
P.S. thanks Alum
I also had no idea what was being discussed. But your comment reminded me of late night cheeseburgers from Express, so thanks for the nostalgia
i was on campus from 2011-2016 and i never heard anyone call the big dining hall area "dietrick" ever
Because your not as old as the rest of us that were on campus when it was called Dietrick and only served food cafeteria style on trays. Said trays made good sleds though.
This makes me look dumb... The comment I was replying to originally said 2014 and not 2004 (unless I really am dumb and it said 2004 the whole time)
Sorry. Had to.
I remember using those trays for sledding! We also used the 55 gallons trash drums to roll down chicken hill in the snow one time as well haha
I was on campus from '06-'10 and we called it both but D2 was more common
It's what they renamed Dietrick after the 2004 rennovation. Stupid name, but better than "Windows On Washington"
These chicks don't even know the name of my band...
I can't stop chuckling at this post, but I'm not sure why.
All you can eat. Not great food, and there's a good chance that you'd end up doing the D2 Dash, which you can probably use your imagination for. (There's a lot of GI discomfort involved.) They have decent breakfast, and I once saw Bud talking to someone when I was in there.
It entertains me that the Dash remained even when the name changed
Names come and names go, but the Dash endures forever.
Schultz breakfast was better, the biscuits were fluffier and large thus holding more sausage gravy.
Schultz breakfast was out of control. As long as the to-go container lid could close, you could shovel as much food as you wanted into that bad boy.
also 2 drinks so I got my milk and my coke to keep me going!
So good. I didnt discover it until probably junior year, but it definitely made 8ams more bearable.
But did they still have the soft serve dispenser at the top of the stairs to the exit?
Yes, but it was very hit or miss on quality. Most of the time it was more ice than cream, but every once in a while someone in your group would say "the ice cream is good today" and everyone got it
Those Dash chicken sandwiches would get after ya.
How old are you?
https://vt.edu/about/locations/buildings/dietrick-hall.html
D2: All you can eat, but mediocre food (likely worst on campus now that Schultz is gone, and due to the fact that other VT campus food is so good)
DX: "Fast Food" on campus, open early for breakfast and quite late for those of us who lived on campus and needed sustenance for late night...studying...
Deets: Coffee + Ice Cream Shop
Also a store, called Dietrick Convenience or something? Way overpriced, but good for snacks and office supplies when you're in a pinch.
Having lived in PY my freshmen year and New Res my sophomore year I am having some *major* nostalgia and need to go lie down.
DX Corn Dog Nuggets are a favorite....uh studying snack
I bought an insulated mug and a stainless steel saucepan from there back in 2001/2, and I STILL use them both to this day. The saucepan is unequivocally the best one that I own.
I met my wife while she was working there. Her milkshakes literally brought me to the yard.
Parliament Lights could be had there for $1.99, so it wasn't all bad (in 1997)
Great memories of D2 breakfast! Especially before a final exam where you've stayed up all night studying. Just have to remember not to eat so much that you can't make it through the final before nature calls if you know what I mean......the D2 Dash is for real π€£
Freshman year, like 15+ people eating together. Very fun!
I remember when we upgraded to finally have a tiny nutrition room near the men's locker rooms on the bottom floor of Cassell. It's crazy to think how quickly our facilities become obsolete compared to the rest of the college athletics landscape.
I think what is going to hurt going forward is basketball, football have to share these and most of facilities with other sports 90 percent of the time. We don't have the footprint to build too many new buildings, the tennis courts next to the basketball practice facility could probably be built over but that's about it. Maybe some upward building and minor Expansion using Lane but not a lot of space there either .
They should've knocked down those stupid trees when I was still in school.
I'd wouldn't be surprised to see Chicken hill buildings one day go away, and maybe the public safety building but that would be major and costly infrastructure.
:(
Let's not turn a gorgeous campus into suburban northern VA. There's tons of room to build more and more buildings all over the Chicken Hill.
No way, man. Where's a dude gonna go to cop a buzz before the game? Jeez.
(looks west to the golf course).... we have the space, its just going to take a major effort to use it. Whether that's migrating athletic facilities, or building new dorms over the golf course and then knocking down the old ones to expand the current athletics location.
edit: i'll emphasize that this is not a near-term solution. This will take major planning, funding, and a multi-decade outlook to make sure it doesn't need to be done again.
I think the golf course is already slated to be minimized, if not completely taken out.

Yes! That's where I saw it! You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar! Or whatever you want to be, I'll sign for it.
FYI, this all changed. I did a post on this earlier this year. I could find it but no time right now. The remaining 9 holes will stay for some time.

Move the university facilities offices that are behind the stadium over there.
I'm not an architect or engineer, but it seems to me that there is a lot of room under the east stands. With that being close to the Beamer Barn, maybe they could connect them for a football only practice/nutrition area?
Egress capacity issue. You need that width.
You sound like my wife
Classic Fire Marshal role play.
This is definitely a good look. Facilities upgrades don't have to be putt-putt and slides, but we do need to make sure we are always looking to upgrade and innovate where we can. We want these recruits to be able to see their future selves thriving in every room when they visit.
A 30-second video of wood paneling and stir fry is all we get of this brand new facility? The creative (video) team has needed to step it up for years.
yeah, it's a new looking facility but the video is pretty boring and doesn't really sell it
I talk up South Carolina's video squad a lot, here's what they do for 30-second videos for brand new facilities:
yeah those are better. I still think there's potential to do even better but based on what we're putting out now I'd settle for striving to match that
It has to be tough right now to do anything close to that. They posted a video of Whit talking about it but it's stationary I'm guessing because no camera person.
Nah all creative teams are on hand, just masked up on set.
Yeah, not like we're putting out weekly uniform reveal videos with other people in them or anything lol. It's been clear all along our video guys haven't quit working because of covid lol.
Do we have interns making our videos? That would track
Nope we've got staff for it, but Clemson and a few other schools heavily use student interns for visuals. We might have interns but they're not producing most of what we see on social.
maybe they should be...
Evidently the Edmundi donated a good chunk of change for this and there's no mention of that anywhere either. Unless they wanted to remain anonymous?
Pretty sure the correct way for multiples is Edmundi π
oof
Edmundii?
Must be a glitch in the Matrix
glug glug chump
Pretty sure the correct way for multiple posts is multiple posts.

More photos.
They should name it Deangelo Hall
I think the optics on announcing this right on the heels of announcing you are cutting $15M from the athletic department. I know this is something that has been in the works for quite some time but just another gaffe by the marketing and leadership in the Athletic department.
I think people look for the optics side of things too often.
This is a nonissue. The money for this was committed and likely spent long before COVID cuts were thought about. Anyone dragging tech around for the optics of this is just looking a reason to drag us around.
I've gotta disagree on this one. This is "Hey, we've successfully completed this long term project" not "Hey we are announcing this brand new multi-million dollar spend just after we cut staff."
nobody will remember this a week from now when the people who care about this are whining about paying Fuente's buyout only a week after those layoffs were announced.
Looks nice! Seeing this however, and the USC videos - this REALLY weakens the "pay the players" argument. When you have perks like this do they really need to get paid?
I had a response to the root comment here and decided that it wasn't going to advance the conversation any and so just deleted it.
Cool facilities, Whit - any other major announcements to share with us?
