Hokies sign 3* OL Will Jones as a preferred walk on

Not sure PWOs deserve a new thread? Well he's a three star from the Shenandoah Valley (played at Stuarts Draft before finishing at IMG Academy) and is better than four of our current scholarship signees according to 247.

Quick edit: since he isn't showing up with a VT Commit banner on 247, here is the article from Evan G. Watkins talking about his PWO commitment.

Big dawgin those poor little VA schools that can't compete with us!

His offer list is really not much different from all the guys that signed w/ scholarship offers yesterday...make of that what you will.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Ordinary name, extraordinary game?

Not sure PWOs deserve a new thread?

ummm. okay. lol

What's wrong with this response? It was echoing Gobble Gobble's sentiment.

Does each reply need a positive hint and then passive realism to not get down voted by TKP? I would rather be talking about situations similar to Nester being added in the last couple weeks than a low 3* PWO / recruits with only a handful of G5 offers. Sorry this one just rubs salt into the wound.

I am certainly one who lacks positivity but taking this in the whole it is more bad on top of bad.

I would say its because you (especially over the past week) have been pretty aggressive with snarky/rude and directed responses with people who disagree with you. TKP self moderates.

From my perspective, you were downvoted for replying directly to a post welcoming a future Hokie to follow his dreams of playing D-1 football with "um. ok. lol." This could be taken as the tone of your previous posts which have been doing almost nothing other than bashing VT's current program.

Put it all together, it sounds like another rude comment directed toward a future player which you can find in the guidelines as a no-no.

He is a walk-in with offers for full FBS scholarships I don't care if we had a top 15 class this would be good.

It doesn't matter how optimistic/pessimistic you are - it's about adding constructive dialog. Per the CG's:

Respect the signal to noise ratio. In other words, don't post or comment or topic for the sake of it. Don't post comments that require further (missing) explanation. You don't have to be an essayist, but a few well-thought out sentences generally contributes to the discussion better. If you're referencing a Tweet, article or YouTube video, link or embed it. Ensure your comment is thorough to the point where everyone else contributing to the thread understands it. Don't deal in riddles or mystery. Brevity can be fine as long as there is context.

I'd argue that your original post increases noise, isn't well thought out, and is not thorough enough that everyone else contributing understands it.

Not sure what sentiment of mine you were echoing... All I was saying is that PWOs who announce a commitment can get their own thread

My comment was going to be so much longer with the definition of "echo", but i didn't want to speak for you. Appreciate your work man.

Pissing and moaning in every thread isn't a good look, and your comment wasn't constructive in any way. It was noise. Complaining about downvotes is going to get you downvoted too.

Because don't be a dick to someone who wants to be a Hokie.

There have been enough replies with great points. I would add that any passive aggressive response punctuated with lol is going to rub me wrong. Maybe it is a generational thing, but I view it as you making an opposing viewpoint and then laughing in my face. Would you do that in person? My suggestion is to reserve LOL for things that are actually, you know, funny.

This is pretty fascinating. He has offers from other teams and is rated pretty highly for a Walk-On. This could end up being a really nice pick up considering that OL is the most difficult position to project from HS to College (my opinion).

What I wonder is how many offers came when he was at Stuarts Draft and how many came at IMG? I know recruiting has been nationalized, but the Shenandoah Valley is still small enough for a good - not great - but still promising recruit to fall through the cracks. If he plays four years at IMG instead of one does he get more offers?

That's interesting, I had no idea he only spent one year there. Playing at a school like IMG, Mater Dei, St Frances, etc. definitely puts a magnifier on your exposure level. I don't know enough to make any assumptions, but I feel great about the low risk pickup of a 6-6 280lbs 3 star OL prospect.

He is a hometown kid for me, so I have followed his recruiting pretty closely. He had the Liberty, JMU, Elon, Army and Navy offers before the transfer to IMG. When Virginia announced during the summer that they were postponing the fall sports season, he transferred to IMG to try and boost his recruiting profile since they are one of the top programs in the country and Florida was planning on having a season.

1-0 every week

He has a Liberty offer. I guess that makes me feel better.

Will Jones commit to Tech? Yes, yes he will.

Yeeeesssssss.

Welcome.

yes Welcome home and best wishes to your success in Blacksburg.

He's gotta be the first mighty Cougar of Stuarts Draft to suit up for ol VPI since John Mollerup. Let's keep that pipeline going!

Lamar Veney in 2002 was the last player from Stuarts Draft to play for tech IIRC

I'm old enough to remember when a 3 star o lineman was just a futile wish from fans who stupidly didn't understand the potential of a 240 pound tight end with "quick feet", and now we are getting one as a PWO?

Vice has gotten the job done.

Welcome aboard young man! Put in the work and earn that scholly!

Glad to see Draft up in the house.

But he shoulda taken that Harvard offer.

I had some great choices at some great institutions, but I just didn't feel complete. Then Virginia Tech called me and offered me a chance to be a preferred walk-on.

Coach Lechtenberg said they would really like me to be a part of their program. They were going to give me the opportunity there to come in and work. They said, "If you're the guy we think you could be, it will work out and hopefully you'll be on scholarship soon."

Virginia Tech has always been a dream school for me.

My family has been Virginia Tech most of the way. My grandpa went there. My aunt and one of my cousins went there. My dad's side of the family has rooted for them my whole life. Additionally, staying in the state of Virginia is something I really wanted to do

Lechtenberg is currently a top 20 recruiter in the ACC. That's kinda good to have.

And I remember when everyone was bitching about making him one of the 10 game day coaches.

Running backs looked good under him too.

With Nester and Hudson leaving, some scholarships opened up.

Great pick up! Especially with Nester and Hudson, unfortunately. Given his offer list, and the 247 article noting Notre Dame also extended a PWO spot to him, this is good news.

Having a conversation with you is like a Martian talking to a Fungo.

.

What would it cost to walk on at Notre Dame vs in state tuition at VT? Dream school + 1/4 the cost seems like the ticket. I'll take it!

Go earn that scholly young man.

I like this pickup, particularly "for free." We do not have a single 4 star recruit in the 2021 class. We had 1 last year. Our highest rated scholarship offensive linemen in this class is an .84. Just 2 points above this kid's rating. So, we can laugh this off, or with that in mind, along with the fact that OL are difficult to project and this kid plainly wants to be a Hokie, look at it as a nice last minute pickup. He has every opportunity to come in an assert dominance over the 2 scholarship OL we signed (.84 and .82, respectively). We need all the help we can get with our top 2 OL departing for the portal. I like Lecht's pitch and I like this kid's response. I'll be rooting for him. And, if he doesn't pan out, we haven't lost anything.

"That's it guys. Let's get out of here. That cold drink's waitin' on us, let's go." - Mike Young after win no. 300.

Totally agree. OL is the place where I think Vice has done a really good job finding and developing lower rated recruits and turning them a pretty strong and deep unit. That will be tested with the portal departures but Mr. Jones looks like a real good addition.

Bring the Beef to the OL, welcome to the Hokies!

For the negative nellies out there people were questioning why we signed Darrisaw too. Dzansi and Augie Conte before that. This could be a great pick up Vice knows what he's doing
