OT: Virginia Tech starts a Hokie Owned Business Directory.

https://vtnews.vt.edu/articles/2020/11/link-homie-business-directory.htm...

Tangentially, Hokies are looking to grow their professional network, make vital business connections, and support fellow members of the Hokie nation in the spirit of Ut Prosim in the ever-changing state of the economy.

In response, Virginia Tech has launched a new Hokie-owned business directory to help connect Virginia Tech faculty and alumni who are entrepreneurs and business owners

Many of y'all have talked about owning or running your own business. This would be a great resource to not only promote your own business but to find a fellow Hokie owned business to support.

you would not believe how long it has taken to get something like this going, and I am not trying to take any kind of recognition at all because I gave up on this a long time ago. But it was something that I and others were pushing since mid- 2000's. Now ... just imagine if we somehow had the technological acumen in Blacksburg to create something that is superior to this mid-2000's type platform and could get this and a general alumni directory on something more akin to mid 2010's technology and put all this on an App.

wow... just marvel at the possibilities our almuni office can achieve in the next 2 decades.... /s

and just for reference, a decade ago my good friend's HS had a full directory of all alumni since it started over a hundred years ago on an app with current business info for networking, an in app connection service, a history of that alumni and family written either by the school or the alumni or their family and a job's board. A ... decade... ago

FOR FUCK SAKE... fire these people and get some competence

I remember certain campus groups trying to push the Hokie Nation Network about 10 years ago, which was basically Hokie Facebook. Nothing ever happened after I signed up.

The only reason I remember the name is because I put it in my favorites list and never deleted it, even though the link goes nowhere.

This is pretty late, but still pretty valuable.

Hmm, trying to redirect us from their complete lack of apathy towards football? Still this is a good idea that is about 20 years to late and i guess better late than never...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

Nice, the career department was very nice to me. They sent a lot of resumes to me in a time of need, didn't quite work out but it was nice.

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

Really dumb question but I have no experience with VT Career Services as an alum.

How does one initiate recruiting Virginia Tech students for internships / full-time positions? I work for a "prestigious" consulting firm (per Vault rankings), we typically recruit undergrads out of the Ivy League and regionally based on office location (New England schools for the Boston office, Stanford/Berkeley/UCLA etc. for the SF office, etc.).

Definitely want to bring in more Virginia Tech alums - especially those with a healthcare background or majored in the bio-related sciences (e.g. BME, Neuroscience etc.)

Contact the head of the specific programs you want to recruit from, in this case healthcare and sciences and ask them to send notice to their professors to make an announcement, or if they can email their recent grads directly.

Do not bother talking to any administrative groups in VT. they are useless.

I can speak from experience, they make it a lot harder than it should be trying to give back to VT students. Almost all of my inbounds from VT students trying to get into private equity come through LinkedIn, and I try to have call with all of them for advice even if they don't fit for us. Pamplin has seemingly conceded to UVA. It is utterly frustrating. If you really want to help and are open to LinkedIn, respond to the folks that reach out, give them advice and help as you can.

Other schools in VT are most likely better at it.

@hokie_rd

There's a Mentorship Connect program, no? Seems like a good idea.

Yes, I participate when called upon. Have been a sounding board for several students.

Same. I try to answer questions when they pop up in the areas I'm following. Had one person ask me to have a conversation with them, accepted it, and then they bailed. Kids...

I am in it. I've had one person reach out to me since joining, and we are one of few private equity groups in the PE space in NOVA.

@hokie_rd

I am in it, and knew you when we were a lot less old haha.

Bumping this thread to the top so it doesn't get buried by ... today.

"Hokie-owned" seems... limiting.

I almost went to work for the company where Will Furrer is a C-Suite exec. Surely a connection like that is worth keeping track of.

Wait...does the link to that article seriously said homie business directory?

How does someone get that wrong?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.
