OT: UNC Drug Bust

Whit may have had a rough week, but he didn't catch a federal trafficing charge like our friends in Chapel Hill did.

Story

"This is a large drug network and supply chain fueling a drug culture at fraternities and within these universities and around these universities and towns,"

"suspects were responsible for moving thousands of pounds of marijuana, hundreds of kilograms of cocaine, LSD, molly, mushrooms, steroids, HGH, Xanax and other narcotics."

The Carolina Way...

So are you saying that they cut their coke with a vinegar based sauce?

No, they add fillers of chili, slaw, mustard, and onions.

Sounds like an awesome hot dog!

Dont forget to deep fry it.

It's okay, the drugs are available to everybody not just athletes

I do art stuff.

I think this counts as an Econ class at UNC.

I think this is where they pulled the information for the game I played on my calculator in high school

That's a LARGE amount of narcotics.

I'm pretty sure this has been going on since the beginning of time at UNC fraternities.

Yeah, no. Mine was not dealing drugs out of the house. Were members using, of course, on par with the general student body.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Yeah, I'm with you. I'm Phi Gam, and even though they were involved at UNC, I can 100% tell you that was not happening at our VT chapter while I was there ('01-'07)

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Hey, samesies! 01-07. Not a Phi Gam though.

And we were just under stricter guidelines, than the rest of the student body when it came to alcohol and parties.

Beer Kegs, no.

Equivalent amount of beer in cases, sure.

Never did understand that.

I've heard it's because the theory is it's harder to roofie that way... which doesn't really make sense to me but that's what I've heard.

I thought it was cause when getting a keg, someone had to provide a name and address, and if the party was busted that person could potentially end up a sad panda

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I recall going to several frat parties in Radford my freshman year with H.S. friends I had that went there, and they did all have cases upon cases of either Beast Light or Beast ICE (this was 95, so the ICE beer craze was in full swing) and I always wondered why they did not get kegs (we used to get them all the time for parties we had in Foxridge).

I guess that makes sense that there is a deposit or something and it could be traced to the Frat and get them banned from campus.

My fraternity purchased cases purely for convenience. We were handing out hundreds of beers at our parties and kegs would not have been an efficient process. It's much faster to pop a can and hand it over than to deal with tapping kegs and pouring beers.

You're correct on the providing a name & address. However, I think vendors do it only because they are required to and I never had a single person verify the information I put on a keg registration. I lived at Clay Street apartments for a year and I thought it would be funny to see what happened if I registered a keg to 200 Clay Street SW (that's the Blacksburg Police Dept address). Nothing happened so I kept on doing it and friends did the same thing.

I had heard that kegs more had to do with mass consumption. It would have been easier for us to get kegs over cans for sure, so the rules made things more difficult for us, but for sure it did not stop anything. Also if we could have had kegs and someone was too drunk we could have taken their cup to cut them off. With cans, their friend could always go get them another can, so we had to force wasted freshmen to leave.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Yeah sheesh. Fraternities have the capability of doing shit like this because they're an organized band of college kids. This sort of thing isn't "normal" fraternity behavior.

This comment and the one above it are both complete bullshit.

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

I know, everybody's always pickin' on those poor fraternities.

You're not wrong about VT though. Much depends on the culture and academic profile of the institution and the membership of any particular chapter. Luckily Radford is right next door.

What's amazing is that because it's a fraternity they face so much more scrutiny than other student groups. This is particularly true with the VT admistration.

The fly fishing club, snowboard club, car club, etc. all get drunk and do the exact same dumb shit fraternities do yet don't get lambasted for it by the university or publicly. So if one of those members does something deemed terrible by the university or society, how come the university / society doesn't blast that group or club? VT in particular has an awful double standard with it, and so does society. It's college kids in general acting like college kids. It's not just one group of college kids causing problems because they joined a club or a group.

"Sling a dead cat" kind of seems relevant to this story.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

They were getting 200 lbs of weed and 2 kilos of cocaine PER WEEK from their supplier. Jesus Tap-dancing Christ that is a lot.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Where were they getting this product from specifically? (Asking for a friend.)

"Vick, dashing back . . . here he comes again . . . Electrifying . . . and have you ever seen anything like this?"

Per the article, their primary supplier was in California (and was the first one taken into custody. Sorry, buddy).

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

I also think the main contact for the UNC guys was busted as well but was only named as "cooperating witness" in the report. Makes sense, no reason for those guys not to knock several years off their sentences by flipping on a bunch of rich college students.

That's insane, and insanely expensive.

Who cares?

I mean, I found this interesting.

I'm pretty sure our stone is in one piece.

The investigation showed that payment for drugs was made using Venmo and by sending cash through the U.S. mail.
