Santa brought us tickets to FloydFest21. First time going and the lineup is insaaaneee. Avett Bros. Sturgill MFin Simpson. Whiskey MFinnn Myers. OCMS. Band of Heathens. It's been a strange time to be a music fan but I've found a couple recent releases that's been keeping me occupied.
-Red City Radio put out a solid rock album called Paradise recently and there's a bunch of songs that are bangers.
-Foxy Shazam is back in a big way with their new album Burn that came out a couple weeks ago.
If I'm being honest though, I've been listening to Star Wars Lofi a ton in the background while I'm working. No shame.

For any Rap/Hip-Hop music lovers, Ace Hood owns his masters now, which I highly approve of for any established artist. He's got his own studio called Hood Nation and released an album last year called Mr. Hood. I'm also listening to some of his older stuff that was put out by his own studio like Starvation 5, which has some straight bangerz
Also, if there are ANY kpop fans, hit me up. I'm spamming K/DA like it's my job right now.

they've released 5 albums since then plus a rarities/b-sides compilation. IMHO those two albums are the weakest of their collection in terms of rock appeal. They've really defined their sound since then... less alternative, more rock.

Imo hats off to the bull is a perfect mix of Sci Fi Crimes and La Gargola and La Gargola is a better North Corridor even tho I like the North Corridor. Are we (millennials) allowed to talk punk pop and emo, or are boomers still calling it noise?
Randomly heard All Time Low on the radio with a decent single called "Monsters", that doesn't sound punk pop, like their single "Maria", but has a darker sound, and totally dig it. Blackbear has a feature, but I thought it was the 21 pilots singer, and caused my daughter to have a heart attack. She's a big 21 pilots fangirl.

Have you listened to any of Machine Gun Kelly's new album "tickets to my downfall"? I enjoy his rock music a lot and think the album is phenomenal. He released two rock songs before tickets to my downfall that are also very good. "I Think I'm Okay" and "why are you here."
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Haven't listened to his new stuff, but then again the radio plays the same 5 songs on repeat, and we no longer have a rock station in Richmond, it's just Alt 102, and it's basically the pop stuff now, like Imagine Dragons, AJR, and then I heard Ariana Grande, so don't know how Alt it really is. Still got Elliot in the morning, though ๐คท๐พโโ๏ธ.

I live in WV. There is no alt to be found whatsoever. I have XM. Alt Nation typically does a good job of exploring the different types of alt music. The Spectrum is good too. I also listen to a lot of music intermittently during work. If I hear a song on the radio I really like, I'll listen to some other stuff from that album. If I really like the album, I'll listen to some of the artist's other discography.

Rooster Walk 12 postponed once again ๐ not surprising, but still very disheartening. Get to see so many people there I otherwise would go yearsss without seeing. With the full on RW12 pushed back to 2022, they're going to do a 3 day festival dubbed "Rooster Walk Reunion" in October. Won't pretend to know what bands that will entail, but I'd have to imagine it'll be the ones like Yarn and Big Something...bands the organizers are crazy close with.

I am on the lookout for Discovery on vinyl. Was eyeing it a couple weeks back on discogs and visited the site again today to see far fewer available for sale along with higher price point... I assume people have been snagging any/all Daft Punk vinyl they can get their hands on today.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I just pre-ordered, but not through their store. I can't justify $15 in shipping for an album that costs $20, even if they are throwing the digital download in there as a bonus. I can wait on the vinyl to arrive, and I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get the FLAC version on discount this weekend, and overall I'll end up spending about the same but with a higher-quality digital release.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
now i'm pissed... it drives me nuts when bands do this and dont disclose what formats the download will be available in. What resolution are the FLAC files? HDTracks only offered them at 48k/24bit
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
you'll have to dig in to the actual file properties to see it... foobar does a good job of showing those properties... not sure if Windows natively can tell you in the file details or not
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
not sure on exact res, but FLAC files are bigger than mp3 or wav, and supposedly sound better. I don't think the difference is big enough to overcome the limited number of devices they are compatible with, but maybe you can listen to FLAC on more than just a laptop/desktop now that it's 2021
edit: it just occurred to me that you might already know all of this
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
FLAC and WAV CAN sound significantly better, but it depends on the mastering. A poorly mastered track will still sound poor regardless of the format used. FLAC is definitely more ubiquitous than it used to be. "Hi-Fi" digital players have been capable of FLAC playback for a while. I think the main thing holding the FLAC format back (and DSD to a bigger extreme) is the file size, which can range from 5x-15x the size of an MP3 or M4A. I think the industry is at a point where FLAC on mobile (phones specifically) is much more viable. However, getting the utility out of FLAC vs. an MP3/M4A with current phones is (IMO) that you can't hear the difference. Higher fidelity music necessitates a better listening environment - better DACs, better amps, better speakers/headphones, and a quiet space. Its hard to address all of those on a mobile platform, and its an incredible financial investment to make if all you want is something to listen to in the background.
I'll leave with this - having heard the differences in the formats with well-mastered music I can attest that the difference that FLAC brings (and DSD) is real. For those that have the means and the desire to go down the rabbit hole I can honestly say its worth it as long as you have the time (and $$$) to enjoy it.

So I was walking our new puupy earlier today and our neighbors across the street came out to see her. Their son (maybe 12-13) is a drummer. Kid can thump. We hear him playing in our house LOL. So we started talking music. He said he's in to progressive technical rock. I have no idea what that is. He gave me a few bands he's into. Sounds like power metal and 8-bit. Mostly instrumental stiff he gave me. We started talking about Tool and i told him I saw them live back in fall 2019. Best show I'd ever seen. Told him to check out Fear Innoculum because Danny Carey is a beast. Cool ass kid.

I just read through the grammy nominees and list of awardees... i'm officially out of touch with mainstream music. Dont know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.... I'm going to listen to more new Chevelle while I ponder.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
New mainstream music, IMO, suffers from a lack diverse song writing. Most artists are prohibited by their labels from writing their own music, instead being for e to "collaborate" with a song writing and production team. Unfortunately this has led to a lot of music just sounding the same or failing to deliver emotional impact beyond the first few listens.
Labels don't have the patience to allow artist to develop their songwriting craft. It usually takes 4 albums, 35-40 released songs, probably 100 written, for an artist to really find their "voice".
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Agree... the issue this causes me is that instead of looking forward to new music from newer atists/bands I'm finding myself looking backwards to listen to artists and albums that I only gave a casual listen to when i was younger, or didn't experience at all. I think Greta Van Fleet was the last "new" artist I latched on to, and fortunately they have their sophomore effort coming out next month.

Royal Blood is about to drop their third release - hard to consider them new, but definitely worth checking out if you haven't listened to them. The Blue Stones are also working their sophomore effort and I'm really looking forward to that when it comes out.

My comparison is probably off, but the closest thing I can think of is The Black Keys. They're a British rock duo that play loud and catchy tunes. Maybe a little bit like Muse as well in that regard, but with a band half the size and far less political overtones.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Think uptempo Arctic Monkeys. Not as much deliberately manufactured LoFi/garage rock sound as Black Keys. One of the few modern alternative bands that are guitar-centric. Not quite heavy enough for rock radio alongside Chevelle and the like, but barely fits on alternative radio. Although I'm a little hesitant about the new album because the lead single sounds like it was written specifically for use in ESPN College Football commercials. First album is outstanding though.

FTFY... I saw them play ~3 years ago when they opened for QOTSA in DC and I was really interested to see how close to the albums they would sound. It was just the two of them, and I didn't pick up on anything that was missing from the songs. Very much unlike Black Keys where the band is a duo, but then they show-up on stage with another 3 backing guitarists.

He does... the bass is on overdrive. And yes, it was a great show. That was a great week actually - first the Anthem opened up and I got *free* tickets to see Foo Fighters the night before the Anthem officially opened, and then a week later I was back to see Royal Blood and QOTSA. Best week of rock I have ever had.

This is why it took forever for The Weeknd to get well known. He refused to let other people mess with his craft. The fact he even played one song from his past albums pissed off industry folks. The Grammys hate him.
My wife loves The Weeknd, and has seen him 2x. I hear the latest drama on a daily basis. Hopefully, we can to go to DC next year for his upcoming tour.

I sense a rhythm, that science can't feel
I feel the beat.... of our hearts as one
I hold your color, when my vision is gone
This power is something but the force is blind
Transmitted through a network, of your own kind

I didn't know Chevelle was still making music. I loved This Type of Thinking... and Wonder What's Next.
They been putting out bangers ever since This type of thinking. They became more alternative metal with the album Vena Sera and onward
If you want a steping back in album I would suggest either La Gargola or Hats off to the bull
I second this take [fires up foobar... finds HottB... play]
Hunter Eats Hunter and Take Out the Gunman were 2 of my favorite off of La Gargola but the whole album is top notch.
they've released 5 albums since then plus a rarities/b-sides compilation. IMHO those two albums are the weakest of their collection in terms of rock appeal. They've really defined their sound since then... less alternative, more rock.

since I think we have a shared musical interest in a number of bands I have to ask - what's your go-to setup for listening?
Desktop setup - Schiit Modi Multibit DAC, Schiit Valhalla headphone amp, Sennheiser 650 cans
Stereo - Onyo TX-8020 receiver/amp, Raspberry Pi 4 & HifiBerry Dac+ Pro (new version linked), Rega P1 turntable, Schiit Mani pre-amp, ELAC UB5, Klipsch SPL-100 sub
My laptop and some $10 headphones off amazon.
Schiit makes great stuff, I've got the Magni pre-amp and the Modi DAC. Amazing value.
Also a big fan of Sennheiser's products, wore my pair of HD580s until they were falling apart and have a pair of HD 598 Cs' that I use for work.
Any sort of serious listening I do in my personal studio:
Interface - Presonus Quantum 2626
Headphones - beyerdynamic DT880s
Monitors - KRK VXT6s
For TV/Games I have a Harman Kardon Enchant 1300 soundbar and matched sub.
My phone and headphones or my Bluetooth jukebox๐

The latest Greta Van Fleet single is pretty money!
Give me all the robert plant vibes!

I fully expect when asked about his list of musical influences that Rick James will be at the top of that list.
For the rock lovers - those that haven't given it a listen need to give the new Royal Blood album a spin. So far my favorite release of '21.
I seen where dream theater might be dropping a new album this year๐
So I recently discovered this mash-up, and it is...excellent. I'm glad I'm not the only person who got 'Goodbye Horses' vibes from 'Save your Tears.'

Live shows are back and I am hype. Black Crowes in Raleigh in September, followed by Willie Nelson/Sturgill Simpson/Gov't Mule in VB a week later. Now I just need the Norva to get back up and running.
This year blue ridge rock fest got 3 of my top 10 favorite bands on the lineup so far๐๐ค
Holy shit. That lineup is wild.
"When I hear.... the sound of concrete and steel
I sense a rhythm, that science can't feel
I feel the beat.... of our hearts as one
I hold your color, when my vision is gone
This power is something but the force is blind
Transmitted through a network, of your own kind
As minutes tick away.... and days become years
I know this old feeling, it's a substance in my tears
And the kids on the street
And the kids everywhere
And all I gotta say is the kids don't care"
Primus on vinyl is awesome. You may now resume your Sunday morning.
Not new music, but today is the 30th anniversary of the release of Metallica's Black Album. I think all Hokies, metal fans or not, probably have a little appreciation for this album.
Saw ZBB @ Fenway on Sunday night, and as they have on several occasions, they did an awesome rendition of 'Enter Sandman'!
Chevelle in Greensboro on Nov 14th might be a play
Not "new" music, but I just got my brand-new remastered copy of the Black album in 180g :-)
Nice. I have Angel dust and king for a day coming in tomorrow
...and now downloading a 2.6GB expanded flac version of the album

woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Definitely worth the extra $$$ I paid for the HD version!!!
They didn't disappoint last night
Not the typical genre on this thread, but if anybody needs a dose of soul... Lawrence just released an acoustic version of Don't Lose Sight about an hour ago and the vocals are insane. Link
If anyone wants to help me out with an embed, thank you!
Appreciate it!
Mastodon is dropping a new album at the end of the month. A double album called Hushed & Grim๐

New Every Time I Die today. My search of AOTY is over.

Other major news from today: Turnpike is back together, announced a show at Red Rocks in May, with new music and other tour dates to follow.
