Hokies hire former Tech defensive lineman J.C. Price to replace Tapp

J.C. Price is returning to his old stomping grounds after being hired Tuesday to be Virginia Tech's new co-defensive line coach and defensive recruiting coordinator.

Price, who was a four-year starting defensive lineman at Virginia and a third-team All-American in 1995, returns to Tech after spending the last nine seasons as an assistant coach at Marshall, including the last two seasons as the Thundering Herd's co-defensive coordinator. He'll replace Darryl Tapp, a Deep Creek High and Tech alum who vacated the Hokies' co-defensive line coach role last week to accept an assistant coaching job with the San Francisco 49ers.

Fuente also announced on Tuesday that Adam Lechtenberg is adding offensive recruiting coordinator his duties as running backs coach. Fuente indicated the addition of recruiting coordinator designations for Lechtenberg and Price were part of the continued evolution of Tech's recruiting and player personnel strategy. In addition, Fuente confirmed that cornerbacks coach Ryan Smith will add passing game coordinator to his duties on the defensive side of the ball, continuing his work with defensive coordinator Justin Hamilton in developing defensive game plans and schemes.

Loved JC Price as a player, was a key cog in the rise of VT football in the early 90s...but:

#Journalism - seems like they forgot a very important word in the name of the school

Saw an article from UVa on the basketball game the other day that referenced VT coach Mike Wofford

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I'm excited about this hire, and recall from Wiles how he wanted JC Price here at Tech. It's finally happened.

The recruiting news is interesting, so I'd like to see how that plays out.

And Ryan Smith will now be passing game coordinator. I'm not sure how that works with him as a defensive coach, so anyone can explain this would be helpful.

He will be the passing game coordinator for defense - so essentially he will have ownership of schemes and strategies to stop the opponent's passing offense. I think Charlie Wiles was the run game coordinator and TGray the passing game coordinator before the Beamer era ended.

I think it means that Ryan Smith has no responsibilities here whatsoever.

Stylistically, he is a good fit. Marshall got up the field much like Teerlinck wants to do. Can Price replicate Tapp's potential as a recruiter, especially since Marshall relied so heavily on transfers and bouncebacks? That will be his challenge.

JC is a blend of Bud and Wiles personality wise. Having been recruited by him previously, I think he'll do just fine.

stories pls

Time will tell on the recruiting part, but he checks a huge box for me: he loves Virginia Tech. You can't sell a place to potential recruits if you don't truly believe what you're selling.

Congrats, Mr. and Mrs. Price!

Hokies forever!

Both Hokie athletes I believe, right?

Yes sir. She was a 2007 VT Hall of Fame inductee

Also, JC and Lechty will add the role of recruiting coordinator for each side of the ball. The role is needed, but I wish Whit would hire those folks as additional staff and let the coaches coach and scout their own position groups.

How do 'recruiting coordinator' responsibilities vary from scouting responsibilities?

I would imagine recruiting coordinators have much more responsibility across all position groups (within their side of the ball) rather than having them worry about coaching and scouting their position they now have to worry about coordinating visits (once they happen again), making sure recruits and HS coaches get contacted, etc. That's my guesstimate with no inside working knowledge

Good hire. I hate losing tapp but not much of a net difference here.

Fun story: even after his playing days in the NFL were over, Coach Price could still absolutely FLY. He coached a season or two at my high school. I was a kid at the time, but as the story goes, apparently our star tailback challenged JC to a race. Price dusted him and the whole team went nuts.

By all accounts, he is a great guy and coach. I also remember his units at JMU giving App State fits while I was there. I hope he does well.

So bad they named a road after him.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I wanted this to Happen...glad to see it.
Its not just about him Being a Hokie, but someone who has the experience. I know he is not a star hire but he's been in the Coaching game long enough.

Solid hire, he has been with Marshall a while and they have been a decent team. Doc Holliday was very good at recruiting for WVU and UF so hopefully JC picked up a few pointers.

EDIT: fixed spelling mistake

Scout.com named Price their Conference USA Recruiter of the Year in 2015, so it sounds like it.

Obviously translating that to P5 is not a sure thing, but it's promising

So it sounds like people are saying The Price is Right!
