#6 Virginia Tech vs #4 NC State
Friday, February 5 @ 8PM on ACCN
This is the biggest match of the year for the Hokies and it is a shame there won't be a few thousand fans in the stands. NC State has talent up and down the lineup and the Hokies will need to have their best performance if they want to walk away with a win. There are a number of ranked matches that will have huge implications for seeding at the NCAA Championships.
Matchups
125: (#8 Sam Latona vs #4 Jakob Camacho) Starting off with one of the most anticipated matches of the night. These two have met before with Latona besting Camacho both times. They met in 2020 at the US Senior Nationals (freestyle), with Latona winning 5-4, and at the prestigious Southern Scuffle (folkstyle), with Latona winning 10-5. Latona has looked like the real deal coming off a prolific redshirt season but Camacho is the reigning ACC champion and will be an extremely difficult test.
133: (#8 Korbin Myers vs #13 Jarrett Trombley or Ryan Jack) Korbin Myers has been at the top of his game this season coming off two decisive victories against ranked opponents, both by major decision. Trombley only has one loss on the season to #4 Mickey Phillippi of Pitt. He didn't wrestle Hayes or Hernandez in the duals, instead wrestling an exhibition against lesser competition, so I am not sure what to make of that. Ryan Jack wrestled in both of those duals with losses to the same opponents Myers defeated. A bonus point victory could be in play here and would go a long way towards a Hokie team victory.
141: (Sam Hillegas vs #10 Tariq Wilson) Hillegas showed promise his last match out but made one too many mistakes and ended up losing in Sudden Victory Overtime. Tariq Wilson continues to be one of the best in the ACC. His size and experience will likely prove too much for Hillegas. Wilson is extremely talented on top so Hillegas needs to do his best to avoid that position.
149: (#11 Bryce Andonian vs Ed Scott) Outside of his loss to the top ranked wrestler in the country, Andonian has outclassed his opponents and put up a ton of points. Scott is just outside of the rankings but has not shown he can be competitive against a ranked opponent. This could be a good opportunity for Andonian to score some back points and get a bonus point victory.
157: (Connor Brady vs #2 Hayden Hidlay) Brady has had an up and down season so far with his best outing coming last weekend against UNC. Hidlay on the other hand is one of the most dominant wrestlers in the weight class and is hunting for a title. Brady will have to wrestle his best match of the season or this one could be rough.
165: ( #1 Mekhi Lewis vs #15 Thomas Bullard) Lewis gave up his first takedown in a college match since 2018 last weekend against Kennedy Monday but was able to get away with a win. Thomas Bullard lost a close match to Monday but does have a top 10 ranked win on his resume this season. Look for Lewis to use his elite defense and reshots to secure another win over a ranked opponent.
174: (Dakota Howard vs #7 Daniel Bullard) Dakota Howard had the best match of his young career last week and was honored with ACC Wrestler of the Week. Daniel Bullard is the top in the ACC at 174 with his only loss of the season coming out of conference back in January. Howard will need to use his motor to wear down his opponent if he wants to keep it close.
184: (#2 Hunter Bolen vs #4 Trent Hidlay) This is the premier match of the night. Bolen bested Hidlay in extremely close matches last season, once in the dual meet and then again in the finals of the ACC Championships. Both wrestlers are hunting for a National Championship and this match has huge implications for seeding.
197: (Andy Smith vs #16 Isaac Trumble) Smith gave great effort last weekend but was unable to come up with a win. Trumble is undefeated on the season with four wins by fall and a victory over a top 10 opponent. Smith has struggled to give himself a chance against ranked opponents but has also avoided giving up bonus points so far this season. This is another match that will put that to the test.
HWT: (#17 John Borst vs #19 Deonte Wilson) Borst has dominated lesser wrestlers but had a very tight match against his first quality opponent. Wilson has only one bonus point victory on the season and remains undefeated. Wilson defeated Borst in a close match last season in their only head-to-head meeting. This match is very important for both wrestlers to improve their seeding at the ACC Championships.
Edit Note: I added in a bit about Trombley at 133. I can't find out why he didn't wrestle in their dual against UNC last week but all of the promotional info coming from Virginia Tech has him as the expected starter.

Comments
I have it 5-5 split tech wins 17-16
I'm coming up 5-5 as well, but I'm concerned they might get a fall or 2 over us to win the points battle.
Need Myers and Andonian to get some tilts. Myers got near fall on Hayes and Hernandez with that cross body wrist control tilt. Andonian just needs to get takedowns because once he is on top he is hunting for a cradle to turn his opponent.
Here is a video of the move Myers has been using if anyone is interested. It won't let me embed the video so I've provided a link.
Cross Wrist Elbow Inside Tilt
DAYUM! Would you look at that!
JerseyHokie is making friends on Twitter
As usual I will count on TKp for blow by blow!
Thanks Hokiemacho...nice job. We need everything to go our way. Mekhi seems to be a little off...need extra points from him. Going to come down to HWT. Let's go Hokies!
And the Wolfpack moved up to #3 this week
Dakota Howard also named ACC Wrestler of the Week, giving Hokies Men's and Women's basketball and Wrestling Players of the Week all at the same time.
Anyone remember this chick?
No but I see she is throwing up the wolf hands.
Look closer and you'll see she's throwing the metal or Devil horns. Pack hands have the pads of the thumbs and middle/ring fingers pressed together.
Well there's one that can't think outside of the box.
Toughest sport in the world next to hockey!
Former Wrestler. Only military training can compare to a wrestling practice. Any physical activity you can lose 7lbs in 2-hours is rigorous!
I really wish that this was the Moss Arts Center match. I think that venue is awesome for these marquee matches.
I wish they just held all of them there. It gives such an aura to the match.
It's too small. I love the venue as well for a big time matche but it only fitting about 1000 people is a huge bummer. Wrestling can pull around 4000 for big matches. The other thing you might not know is the athletic department has to pay to use it.
More dumb rules...Virginia Tech pays Virginia Tech...SMDH.
Awesome!
This guy gets it....
How awesome are MY and BF?
It's 7:36 LETS GO!
We start at 133.
Meyers looking bow and arrow.
He smells blood early. He is cutting and getting takedowns in the second.
Korbin is the best wrestler on the team right now. Dude is just straight bullying everyone.
Controlled the match from start to finish. Very impressive.
The dude is a savage. His speed with takedowns and then ability to get turns once he gets them is excellent.
His shots are so crisp. Its ridiculous. To hit that many ankle picks on anyone, let alone a top 15 guy, is just wild.
Myers wins 13-5 for a Major Decision. Hokies up 4-0. Myers was dominant.
great start! Korbin is underrated
Hillegas gives up the first takedown. He really needs to avoid getting on bottom. Wilson is very dangerous.
Popolizio whining at the official is peak popolizio
Can't ride parallel, they know that haha
They have trained the NC State fan base to whine for stalling. It's awful.
I am so happy this match is at Tech. The NCST fans are so annoying.
Imagine if Hillegas hit that patterson๐
Here comes the first stall to win. Slick reshot though by Wilson
Hillegas with a bad shot and gets punished. Wilson wins 5-1. Hokies up 4-3.
BA feels sloppy through two. 6-4 going into the third.
I'm never worried about andonian. Guy knows how to score
Wow what a takedown by Andonian at the end of the 2nd period
BA finishes strong. Wins 9-5. Team score 7-3 Hokies
If Brady can prevent bonus points this match, that's a big win.
Big win! Great defense from Brady. Heavy hips, great job avoiding that sweep single.
Andonian got caught a bit out of position going for backs and gave up some reversals. He cleans that up and he is walking away with 6.
Agreed. He was to high on the first takedown
Everytime I see someone has a headlock I shout hit em with a cement mixer๐
One can dream!
Ok ref๐
Sheesh... giving away points here.
These hands to the faces calls are little silly. Hidley just punched brady and brady trying to figure his range gets called.
Whew...
Hell of a match by Brady
No such things as moral victories, but not giving up the bonus is HUGE. Brady impressed in the loss
- Bud Foster
Probably
He'll learn how to finish that shot next time๐
I know im being overly critical. However, I wish Mekhi could generate more offense. That is all.
Bullard is tough in those locks. Wish Lewis had pushed the pace a bit more early though. He physically dominated on top
Mekhi wins 5-0. Hokies 10-6
COME ON HOWARD BREAK ANOTHER WRESTLER๐
Umm that nc state guy had the leg for more than 5 seconds
Damnit
I don't understand, it feels like there's no way in hell the nc state guy had control for that to be a take down at the end
Howard drops the Major Decision 10-2. Team score tied at 10
๐๐
Jesus christ๐
Big sigh of relief.
Bolen wins 2-1 in a clincher for the ages. Hokies up 13-10 with three to go.
Need to win the next 2 out of 3 matches
NCST's 197 is beatable, just do not get in an over/under with him.
You right๐
Smeltzer in at 197. I love the call. Put in the horse strong veteran in a close match.
Stan upper body strength is crazy
Great match so far!
This is the first wrestling match I've ever watched. I'm all in now this is intense.
If you ever get a chance to go to one in person you won't regret it. The intensity is on another level.
GET UP
NC STATE AND THE LANKY FUCKS
FUUUUUCK
Tactical error taking bottom in the third. Smeltzer gets ridden out to lose 6-5. Match tied at 13
Probably gotta win the next 2 to win the dual
What's the criteria for the 16-16 tie?
There's a bunch
Criteria
NCST are great stallers...
There's the match๐
Hope Borst is okay. But hell of a way to lose the duel.
Or not๐
Borst probably just tore the ligament in his elbow. Injury Forfeit is 6 for NC State.
What a savage?! He's going to keep going. Out of injury timeout your opponent gets choice.
When two teams finish in a tie in a dual meet or a team-advancement tournament, the following criteria shall be applied to determine a winner:
A: Greater number of victories (Note: Forfeits, defaults and disqualifications count toward total number of victories.)
B: Combined total number of falls, forfeits, defaults and disqualifications
C: Total match points scored only from decisions, major decisions and technical falls
D: Total near fall points scored only from decisions, major decisions and technical falls (Example: N-2 + N-2 + N-4 = Total of 8 near fall points scored for one team)
E: Total number of takedowns scored only from decisions, major decisions and technical falls (Example: T-2 + T-2 + T-2 = Total of 3 takedowns scored for one team)
F: Least number of unsportsmanlike conduct calls
G: First takedown scored in the dual meet
One team point shall be awarded to the team winning by criteria. The method of recording the score in breaking team ties shall be the score followed by the criterion number that broke the tie (for example, Team A 17, Team B 16, criterion 3-21-A)
Right now its c criteria and it's 44-43 nc state rn
So Latona has to win by 2+ points to take the dual?
There haven't been any near fall points for criteria D... Anyone know where we stand on criteria E?
After losing multiple matches on criteria in 2019 I'd really like to win this one.
I miss Walz
You gotta take one shot if you want to win...
Ride with Catka the rest of the year. At least he will shoot.
I'm not sure Borst was going to shoot. I think he was just staying in not to give up 6.
I agree in this case. However, dude never generates offense though. Basically the same match as last year.
Latona force that shot
Whine some more pop๐
Put him in his place and deduct a team point.
OMG
What a great match!!!
I know nothing about wrestling, but I am fucking hype right now.
LATONA!!!!!!!
WE WINNNNNNN
Sam isn't beating Lee, but he is going to make a run this year!
Nobody is beating Lee, let's be honest
But after Lee is gone I totally see latona winning a championship
WHAT DOES IT MEAN???!!!!
What a freaking match!
Hokies!!!!!!
Letsssss Gooooo!!!!
Latona scored backs in the last 2 seconds for the VT win!!
This makes up for them beating us in football in 2004 17-16.
Someone start a FAM thread!
Let's go streaking!
Whooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Rick Flair got nothing on me.
FAM! Fuck yeah!!!!
That was awesome!
HOKIES!!!!!!
Truly unbelievable... That's why you wrestle to the end. A takedown and back points with 2 seconds left to end the nation's longest win streak. Hell yeah, Go Hokies!!!
Pepper needs new shorts!
Can we also take a moment to comment how excited the UVA alum announcer got at the end there. That was just awesome.

Rock Harrison is a great commentater. One of the best in wrestling
That dude definitely wanted to go out on the mat after that last match.
Yeah he was great all night long, was really into it, no bias. The best ones are the ones that just love the sport.
Watching this video again what is interesting is that the second backpoints swipe was after the clock hit 0.0. Had they not thrown their brick earlier they could have likely challenged that and won the ACC Dual meet title hahaha.
I think we had the tiebreakers going our way even if Latona didn't get the back points and he only got the TD to win by 1 in his match.
No Virginia Tech would have lost on points scored criteria 47-48. They needed the two back points to take the lead.
No. That's wrong. See below for the score card. Take away the 2 back points and the score is tied. It then goes to takedowns which the Hokies had one more.Nevermind you're right. I was reading the bottom of the score which shows 44-42.the swipes got delayed compared to the actual back time as the ref initially signaled the takedown with the wrong color, then signaled the correct color.. that delayed the start of the arm swipes. I think on replay they'd have gone from when the back time started, which was more than 2sec before the buzzer
ALSO ACC DUAL MEET CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!
Thx for sharing!
What a win! What a finish!
Inject it in to my veins!
I've played this 20 times and cannot stop watching.
That. Shot describes wrestling to a T! Nothing nothing then BOOM!
Great win! Now if the Chiefs can beat the Bucs...perfect weekend.
While I'm here I'm gonna say this. If you thought that was exciting and everything consider donating to the SERTC. Donating to them will help bring in big time USA/International wrestling athletes and in return will attract TOP recuirts in the country๐๐ค
Yessir. Helps the Hokies get more guys like James Green, who helps make our guys better.
Here we go....#1 in recuirting again...Hokies are good at recuirting!!
we need to keep getting the best recuirts
SERTC? Link? I may not give much, but the match today earns a round.
SERTC
Thank you. Form is still dated 2018, but if I send $20 I'm sure the will find a way to take it.
Thank you for donating! That money goes directly to helping make Hokie Wrestling better.

TWOOOOO!!!!! TWOOOOOOOO!!!! Man I wish there was a full house for that one. Cassell would have been rocking like basketball had a 10 point lead on the #1 team!
