Hokies ranked 18th this week (15FEB)

VT ranked 18th in the AP poll for this week. Hopefully we can get back to playing soon and push for a higher spot towards the end of the season. Bracket Matrix has us as a six seed in the tournament. I like this seed because you avoid the 1 seed in your quadrant till the Elite 8.

Hopefully we can get back to playing soon

Doesn't look likely that they will play until Feb 23rd against GT. The withdrawal is getting so bad I'm starting to see pink Christina Aguilera monsters...

This has been one hell of a bye week

Kop, this has been one hell of a bye month, for a team that wears the color Red. The absence of Hokies basketball has made things all that much more challenging lol

In other ACC news, BC fired coach Jim Christian today.

It was probably going to happen anyway. But their program is all kinds of screwed up and has been since Al Skinner got canned in 2010. He was their all time winningest coach and they fired him anyway.

Tougher part...

If the second game against Florida State gets postponed (cancelled), then that leaves 3 home games and a road game at NC state left. Solid chance to go 4-0 over that stretch, and end up 12-3. Even at 2-2 the finish is 10 - 5, which would be a pretty good chance at a bye for the ACC tournament.

If the NCAA pushed back the championship by a week, it would allow conferences to get some of the postponed games made up as conference tournaments could be pushed a week too. Not like there is competition for venues that would cause scheduling issues.

This would allow conferences to put games back on the schedule to even things out a bit between teams.

Yeah, Quarantine the teams in Greensboro to make up games then play the conference tourney the following week. I don't see this happening though, not even sure the Conference Tourney happens at this point.

Tourney hinges on Coach K, if he whines to get out of it, they will cancel.

It's his only lifeline to the postseason at this point but after the Johnson news, who knows.

but after the Johnson news, who knows.

Had no idea to what you were referring, so I had to Google it. For those clueless like me, Jalen Johnson of Duke opted out of the rest of the season to prepare for the NBA.

At this point, with only 17 days left in the regular schedule, here are the top 4 ACC teams (and their conference record) with a double-bye in the tourney:

  • Virginia (11-2) [13 games played]
  • Florida State (8-2) [10 games played]
  • Virginia Tech (8-3) [11 games played]
  • Louisville (6-3) [9 games played]

What a cluster! At best, Louisville could play 4 conference games to catch up to Virginia, but that would be without Virginia playing another game, making Louisville play approximately every 4 days with Virginia sitting the rest of the regular season. Granted, one could go through the numbers and reasonably weigh each team (with different # of conference games played), but the end result is enough reason for any given member team to argue they were shafted, in one way or another, for ACC tourney seeding. I don't see the infections/contact tracing letting up by the end of the weekend to allow the conference to salvage the season.

So, in my opinion, they just need to salvage what they can of the regular season, give the best record a paper certificate claiming they were conference champs this year (with a big fat asterisk the shape of a coronavirus next to it), and let the NCAA do whatever it will for seeding for the big dance. It doesn't make sense to me to try to shoehorn a conference tournament in for a conference schedule that resembles Swiss cheese. Instead, call it for what it is and give the member teams the opportunity to distance and get healthy for the post-season.
