I think this is low as do they but the voters are probably accounting for losing the #1 pick in the MLS Draft and a second MLS Draftee. Once the games start getting played I expect them to rise.
Ranked men's soccer...check
Ranked men's baseball...check
Ranked men's basketball...check
Ranked wrestling...check
Ranked football............*record scratch*
We were ranked when we played UNC.
All part of Whit's grand plan to bring us back to relevance, succeed at olympic sports and fail at the most important one. Worked great for uva, sigh...
Legit question that I don't even know my own answer to... Would you accept a mediocre football program if it meant we win a men's basketball national championship in the next 5 years?
Depends on how you define mediocre, and for how long. The way football is stratified now, it''l be pretty tough to get to an elite level anyways.
I probably would. But for some perspective, I don't think at this point that there is a legitimate chance our football team ever wins a National Championship. That's more of an indictment of college football and it's structure than saying VT football will never be above average again. But "good" isn't enough anymore.
For basketball, we have the coach already that I believe has the ability to win a title in the right circumstance. That's the beauty of college basketball, you just need to be good enough for one year.
I wouldn't go as far to say that we can win a championship in basketball. Mark Few hasn't, Bohiem only has 1, Izzo too. You need a lot to go right. It's super tough and VT has never come close to playing that well for that long. But as you eluded to at the end of the day you just have to win games and that is not true for football.
But making the final four in basketball is really special. More so that making the playoff in football. If Mike Young takes VT to 1 final four it would be amazing. If he gets to multiple final fours it would be amazing. 64 coaches have multiple final four appearances, 32 have 3 or more. I can see Young getting to a fi al four if everything goes right
Your last point is what I'm saying as well. Will VT win a basketball title at some point? I would say probably not. As you said a lot has to fall right for an extended number of games, and some all timers that you mentioned have only ever gotten one.
But if someone asked if I thought CMY was a good enough coach to possibly win a title, I would say yes with no hesitation.
I would have said the same about Buzz. Our current coach and the previous are 1a and 1b reasons as to why our basketball team is a legitimate program in a top end basketball conference. You string together enough years of high end coaching, you give yourself as good a chance as most other teams
In basketball, if you are good enough to get into the tournament, you have a legitimate shot. In football, you have to be selected to a 4 school beauty contest that is progressively becoming 75% predetermined before the season even starts.
So if you ask me which one I think we have a better chance to win and the one we should prioritize, it's basketball. And that's because football has completely ruined itself over the past 20 years.
Football has always been ruined. A lot of those old championship teams were voted champions because the media hardly ever saw teams play. Alabama claims a national title from a season where they were like 8-3. UCF has a legit claim to the National title a few years ago because the NCAA never changed the rule books. Football had a major team go undefeated and didn't win a title and that was more than 20 years ago.
As long as we do not have to be a #1 loosing to a #16 first. I don't' see a path to us ever competing with the blue bloods in football but developing a good basketball team in this conference seems much more attainable.
I have almost no interest in basketball, but I'd gladly accept (1) a mediocre football team and (2) being a #1 seed and losing to a #16 seed if it meant that we won the basketball national championship the following year.
Heck, I'd take (1) and (2) above even if it meant winning the national championship in volleyball (my favorite sport) or baseball, wresting, soccer ... Just want to get off no real team wins list. Sorry, bass fishing doesn't count for me.
I don't know, fish can be very uncooperative...

Damn, no respect for our two Bass Fishing Rangs? What is this world coming too...
Oh man I love football but it has become hard to get enthusiastic about and basketball was my first love as an athlete growing up. I would say yes I'd take that. Can we average 8 wins a football season and win a natty in basketball in this scenario?
You forgot track and field
Softball, womens golf, lacrosse, also ranked
As a Hokie fan who lives in Blacksburg I love how strong our athletic teams are overall because I get to go see them with my kids. As a Hokie fan who realizes how the sausage is made I really hope football gets back to annual top 25 end of year rankings with the occasional ACC championship win (1-2 per decade) and somewhat regular appearances (every 3ish years).
Awesome news
Also, it seems as though we're becoming an "Any sport but football" school...
AnyEvery sport but football" school... FTFY...much obliged, that is what i meant
