Me too. I remember being very vocal that bringing in Mike Young was a James Johnson type of hire. Talk about being REALLY wrong.
I fall in the same boat and feel completely idiotic. Hated the hire, missed Buzz.
However, Mike Young recruits/brings-in BIGS! I always said under Buzz that we never had bigs and that's why we had a defined team success ceiling.
If CMY keeps bringing in 'cruits and BIGS, we're in great shape!

He's earned it for sure. Considering what he was left with when Buzz left I wouldn't have believed we'd be a top 25 team with some big wins this soon.

It's probably more along the lines of, this was his first year playing in the ACC, so he isn't eligible until next year.
What an amazing hire this has turned out to be. Back to back absolute money shots on BBall hires. Buzz elevated the program rapidly from a low floor, reignited the fanbase, and started a winning expectation at the school, and Mike Young is the perfect, hopefully longer term option to build on that and turn us into a consistent ACC basketball team. Love it.

Mike Young is great and all, and VT had a great year, but the job Coach K did to tank Duke was epic. No one has tanked Duke like that. I mean they are guaranteed the first round draft pick right?
The best part is he did with a first team All ACC player.
I mean Erick Green was the ACC POTY and we were not good that year.
It would've been a shame to give it to anybody else, he ran away with it after being picked to finish 11th in the ACC. Helluva job by Popcorn Mike!

There couldn't have been much debate on this in the ACC HQ zoom call. Without a doubt CMY was Coach of the Year this year.
With the win against Wake Forest, CMY tied Seth Greenberg and Buzz Williams for the 7th most wins during the first two seasons as VT Men's BBall coach. A win on Thursday will tie Howie Shannon for 6th.
Feels like CMY should have a few more wins than Buzz. I really thought they struggled the first year. Came close to a few upsets but all around were definitely a lower tier ACC team (pretty sure they lost to Radford) and then started to turn the corner a little in year 2 but were still only an NIT team
He would have had more wins except for the 6? canceled games.
Of our cancelled games, I think we would have won four of them.
BC, UNC, Louisville, NC State. That would've put him alone in 3rd with 35, behind the tie of DeVoe and Moir (38). Four postseason wins and he'd have the best two year start.
CMY is the all-time leader in wins at VT during a pandemic

What about all the non-conference games against weak competition that were never scheduled? Or the tournament games from last year?
I would assume an additional five games, based on how many we played, plus at least one NIT game last year.
It's very possible that given a normal ending to last year and a full slate of games this year, CMY would be Tech's all time leader in wins through the first two seasons, and he'd already be in the top 10 for the first three years.
To be honest, I thought Paster would've received this the way they finished the season and our cancellations against some top opponents. Regardless, love this award coming to Bburg.

I wouldn't get so high and mighty. Brent won SEC coach of the year last year. A sobering reality that while CMY is making great progress, any program is like a house of cards.
Why do people always have the bring in buzz and bash him on these threads? Without him CMY has a much tougher job and we likely don't end up with CMY in the first place. Go grind some other axe somewhere else and let a the dead horse be and celebrate the good times and quit looking in the rear view mirror so you can carry on some weird grudge.
Never thought I'd see the day we finished third in the league this quickly under young and have loved every second of it. Young earned the award and a few cold beers and a big bonus for the upcoming summer
Brent built it, CMY is maintaining it.
Brent built it; but Brent took it with him when he left.
CMY has rebuilt it and hopefully will stay and maintain it.
Buzz built it, CMY rebuilt it a little taller.
Ehhh I wouldn't say that yet. Buzz got us to 3 NCAA tourneys in a row and won some games in the tourney. Mike Young still has some work cut out to go beyond what Buzz did. I think he can/will do it, but there definitely is still some work left to surpass what Buzz did.
