Any word on Lewis?
He's a go
I'm curious as someone who only follows wrestling tangentially, how does a team when a national championship? Is it cumulative points scored in the various weight classes? If so what is a realistic number of wrestlers you need to get in in order to be seriously competing for the natty?
Its all about on where our wrestlers place Individualy. For Example let's take Andonian. He wins every match to the semi finals which is 4 matches but he also gets 2 pins. He then loses his Semis which drops him to Consi Semis which he wins by pinfall then wins the 3rd place match. That would put him at 20 points cause of ( 10 points for 3rd place. 3 points advanceing through the main bracket. 1 point for his 2 Consi wins and 6 points for 3 pins) then he 20 points he scored will go into the team score

By god I finally learned to link something😱
bro it's literally copy the link and paste it into comment box lol
Hey don't bring down this tremendous moment down Gobble😂
ok that makes sense, so how many points does the team that wins the national championship normally score and on average how many wrestlers do they have? It seems like if you could win with a small number of wrestlers who all win the championship at their weight range but I would guess normally the winning team has a large number that on average do pretty well with a couple of champions to top it off
NC team usually has around 7 AA with 3 of them being National champions so I say around 105 points is a national championship
Someone more educated than me in wrestling may be able to answer, what chances does anyone have a National Championship? Is this a sport that like if you're not in the top 3 you really don't have a shot? Is 8 wrestlers in the event good? I have no idea.
Top 8 Is All American status so yes finishing top 8 is really good but if you're already a top 8 seed you want to out wrestle your seed
Thanks for the reply, but I more meant is getting 8 wrestlers into the NCAA's good enough to potentially get enough points that could compete to win or does someone have like every wrestler in. I have no idea what our actual chances are at a top 10, top 5 or winning.
If we wrestle to our seeds we're finishing top 4
Don't follow wrestling a ton, but I think I can roughly estimate our chances:
Top 10 - reasonable shot but need to perform at or above our seeding
Top 5 - unlikely, would need quite a few upsets and likely 1 or 2 NCAA champions
Winning - pretty much impossible
Top 5 is easily in play
Sure, but considering we've only done it once before in history - I'm a bit more conservative on my projections. Especially since Mekhi Lewis won in 2019 and we still finished outside the top 10.
Looking back on the 2019 team we only had 1 AA and 1 NC. This year team might not have a NC but this team does have a lot of highly seeded wrestlers who can place high
Also remember back in 2016 when we got a team trophy. We had 6 AA no NC
There are only 10 weight classes, so sending 8 wrestlers to the tournament is very good. I am sure some send 10, and more is better, but we should be happy with 8 and optimistic for the future. This is not VT wrestling's year to break through for a team title, but several wrestlers can make All-American, compete for individual national championships, and be that much better next year.
Only a hand full of teams send 10 wrestlers in any given year. I think this year it is 4 teams, last year it was 2. Even with 10 guys going those teams usually have at least one or two wrestlers that might go 0-2.
Can someone point me in the direction of info on the tournament schedule and TV info? I tried googling it with no luck. Thanks!
Thursday Friday Saturday. Thursday is mostly gonna be on the ESPN app. Friday is when espn starts picking it up more
Next week
The schedule for the sessions still hasn't been released. I'll link it once it gets updated with times.
We need to score some bonus points. Andonian, Latona, even Lewis need to score some pins.
Sidenote, quite often the team national championship it's decided by the championship round. Placing wrestlers in the top 3 is the goal for a natty.
Ohio State was in good shape back in 2018 I think it was and then fell apart in the championship round and placed 2nd. I expect this year will be similar to 2019 where it's all but decided before the finals.
Big thanks to ltrepeter and APrimus for this info. I'm no wrestling expert at all, but it seems pretty encouraging to have guys as No. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 seeds, in addition to 3 other guys in the tournament.
Looking forward to seeing if we can finish in the top 4 or 5 as a team.
This is one of the best NCAA Championship teams I can remember going in to the tournament. Now it's just a matter of getting wins in the consolation bracket. Winning on the backside equals a team trophy.
I got the big CAT finishing 8th👀
Hokies will be sporting some fresh duds during one of the sessions at the NCAAs
I appreciate the Long/Lat coordinates, since they were some of the many, many things I had to memorize in the VTCC.
Still no status on Mekhi Lewis?
He's listed in his weight class
They didn't mention any details on the SERTC newsletter so they are playing this one very close to the vest.
Tournament kicks off today at 11am on ESPNU and WatchESPN.
I am hoping we can get all 8 guys a win today and at least 5 of them to go 2-0 and advance into the quarterfinals.
Go Hokies!
