1-0 Everyday....
The Hokies have the difficult task of facing Florida after another week away from games. The Hokies are 5-4 against Florida going into their 10th meeting.

The Gators are coached by Mike White, who is in his sixth season as head coach at Florida. White is 122-74 overall guiding the Gators. Prior to Florida, White had a four-year stint at Louisiana Tech and is 222-113 overall as a head coach.
Coach White's Gators wins and losses have come in spurts and are 14-9 with wins over Army, Boston College, Stetson, Vanderbilt twice, LSU, Ole Miss, #6 Tennessee, Georgia twice, #11 WVU, Auburn, Kentucky. Their nine losses are against #20 Florida State, Alabama, Kentucky, Miss St, South Carolina, #24 Arkansas, Missouri, #22 Tennessee twice. The Gators are 2-4 against ranked opponents. The Gators experienced two Covid pauses although they were at two very different points of the schedule. One was mid-December for three games. The other was early January for two games.
The loss of Keyontae Johnson when he collapsed on the court in late December played a major role in how this team performed. Before that happened he was their leading scorer and second best rebounder.
Defensively, Coach White loves to use a Up-tempo, high-energy, man-to-man press defense that forces opponents to use up shot clock to even advance to the half court. The match-up press is a more complicated "system" of presses, more difficult to learn than a zone press, and involves a fair amount of practice time. But it has the advantage of always having pressure on the ball no matter what press-breaker the offense uses. In the half-court Florida uses the "cut and double" tactic along the sidelines. They will force the ballhandler to speed-dribble up the sideline, and then the initial defender sprints ahead of and "cuts" the ballhandler somewhere along the sideline. This could happen either before or beyond the half-court line. A second defender runs along with his/her man, even with the ball. As soon as the ballhandler is stopped, the second defender sprints over to trap the ballhandler. Oftentimes, the ballhandler will spin backwards away from the first defender and toward the sideline, creating an opportunity for the second defender to trap or steal the ball, since the ballhandler while spinning is "blind" to the trap coming from behind.
Another press rule Coach White employs is to run at and stop the ball anytime the ball is being speed-dribbled toward you. This happens in the middle of the court, or along the sideline. Ordinarily, they only trap along the sidelines, not in the middle of the court. So, in the middle, it's usually a "run and jump" causing the ball handler to adjust course or stop. The advantages of running at the ball when it is being speed-dribbled at you are that it may cause the speed-dribbler to turn the ball over with a ball-handling error or a bad pass, it helps slow-down and contain the dribbler, it could result in a dead ball and a trap, and it gives the defense a chance to "turn" the ball back to the sideline or the opposite direction.
Another variation Coach white uses is the "run and double" which also occurs when the ball is being speed-dribbled at someone. This is typically used to trap along the sidelines in the half court defense, especially in the corners.
Offensively, Florida runs a 4-Out Ball Screen motion offense. Four perimeter players space out on the 3-point arc. There is one post player, who starts either low or high (free throw line area). The post player moves as the ball moves, using the low blocks, anywhere up and down the lanes, paint area, elbows and high post (free-throw line area) - basically anywhere he/she can get open for a pass inside. Perimeter players also attack with a dribble-drive. This is often easier when the post player is located on the opposite (weakside) low block. Florida uses the drive and kick quite a bit since they have several good 3-point shooters, ballhandler can go "inside-out" where a guard dribble-penetrates, draws in the helpside defenders, and then kicks the pass out to a perimeter player spotting up for a 3-point shot. Expect to see guards setting picks on the perimeter in this offense as well to free up their ballhandler.

What to expect from Florida?

Even with the loss of Johnson, the Gators roll out five Top 100 Recruits in their limited seven-man primary rotation.
The Gators commit 18.5 fouls per game so they are apt to get in foul trouble, especially since they prefer to only go 2 deep on their bench. Six different Gators average more than 2.2 fouls per game.
As a team the Gators are shooting 35.7% from the perimeter on 19 attempts per game. Mann, Locke and Appleby are their consistent perimeter shooters and take 13.6 of the teams 19.1 attempts per game.
Florida's five starters all average 7.9 ppg or higher. Mann leads the way at 16 points per game followed by the trio of Castleton, Appleby and Locke, who all average double figures. Only seven players are getting 10 or more minutes a contest, so a starter dominated workload.
Florida is essentially even in the rebounding department. Outside of Castleton their starting lineup are all 6'5 or smaller. Six of their seven player primary rotation average at least three rebounds per game led by Castleton with 5.9 with Mann close behind at 5.7. Castleton, Lewis and Payne average 4.7 blocks per contest.
Mann and Appleby are the primary distributors, averaging more than 3 assists per game each.
The Hokies
One shining moment today was giving back during March Madness. @cpemsl35, @Wabissa_B11, @JM_Squarepants & @J15Cone read to elementary schools while in Indianapolis. Thank you South Putnam Central Elementary, IN & Glade Hill Elementary, VA for the invite! @marchmadness GO HOKIES! pic.twitter.com/twSY5EfKveβ MY TURN (@MY__TURN) March 18, 2021
The Hokies need to focus on getting Aluma or Mutts the ball down low, especially on a low block when the Gators attempt to trap the ball in the corner. The Gators smaller lineup outside Castleton will make it hard for the Gators to protect inside against the Hokies two bigs.
The Hokies will need to find their way to the rim and avoid turnovers. That is the critical factor in most of Florida's wins this season. They average forcing 14.2 turnovers and are 11-4 when forcing more than fourteen turnovers. The Gators commit 14.6 turnovers per game and allow 18 points off those so the ability to retain possession tips a major factor in the Hokies favor.
The Hokies will be without Jalen Cone for this weekend so the perimeter scoring will have to come from Hunter and Naheim. There will also be a single Bede Bomb just to keep Florida guessing. Crisp passing to the open man and hitting open shots especially with how often Florida attempts to double team will likely be the single most important aspect of this game.
Florida opponents right now average 11.5 offensive rebounds per game on 34 missed shot attempts. The Hokies must be able to position themselves inside to get offensive rebounds and second chance points. Florida opponents are averaging 15.2 second chance points per game. In a game likely to come down to a couple baskets, finding these extra buckets will be huge.
Florida opponents so far make 14.3 free throws per game. This is 20.4% of opponents scoring against the Gators. The Hokies are averaging 13 made free throws on 18.7 attempts. YOU HAVE TO HIT YOUR FREE THROWS.
As part of this the Hokies need to be relentless in forcing the Gators starters into fouling situations. While Florida doesn't foul a lot as a team, four of the starters average 2.3 fouls per game, so fouls hold more significance as they typically only go two deep on the bench for significant minutes.
In Closing

The Hokies must slow Mann and Appleby on the outside. They can survive a game from Castleton but if the Gators get hot from outside, it will be much like the Pittsburgh game. Castleton struggles defensively so Aluma should have a good afternoon. Mutts though on the backdoor catch and layup will probably be the Hokies biggest weapon against the Gator double-team.
Hokies start fast especially inside to open up the outside shooters in the second half. The key though is to continue pounding the ball inside to pull away in the second half. Hokies win 77-71.

Confidence Factor: Three Popcorns, there are too many little things that can go either way in this game. The Gators are arguably the better starting five but get very little from their bench. If they are forced down the roster that greatly favors the Hokies.

LET'S GO!
HOKIES!
HOKIES
DRINK
This has been the single biggest issue in all of our losses this season. Lazy, sloppy passing has haunted us at times all season long, hopefully the team comes out sharp today.
Get Poppin...
HERE WE GOOOOOO
Stupid charge by Mutts to start. Let's Go Hokies.
Does Indiana not know what curtains are? Having to deal with the sun inside an arena?
Man we are ice cold shooting.
It will start heating up.
Alleyne heating up!
Love that we are the first game of the Round of 64
Love that it's the first Tourney game at Hinkle in 81 years
Love that we got Nantz and Rafferty
Hoping for some "Onions!!" for the good guys today
Who's most likely to get the Onions call? I say Radford.
Mutts or Catoor with a big 3 in the 2nd half
How was that a foul on us?
What ball movement on that Catoor 3!
great ball movement! CATOOR!
That ball movement before the Cattoor 3...
I went from 6 to midnight
Hoping Cattoor goes off. That would be refreshing.
Hunter coming out on fire.
That ball movement on Cattoor's first 3 pointer was beautiful
CattOOr has two big ones! And ice in his veins!
2nd foul on Bede with their pressure defense is concerning
They all seem to be slipping in that one area.
Cattoor Smoke baby
Is 3/3 from 3 on your first 3 shots good?
Asking for a friend
I love Bamisile at point if he can be consistent
The guy gives Cattoor the full extension arm to put him on the floor. Block called by official out of position behind the play.
That was a garbage call.
Glad I am not the only one pissed about that terrible call
Mann just traveled twice on that basket
The zone is killing us. They must've watched the Syracuse tape.
Keve is going to have to do something besides waiting in the post for the ball. The way to open up the zone is ball rotation and slashes to the rim, we're doing the rotation but slashing only works when the lane is more open.
Missing FTs hurting us.
How was that a tie up? Whistle before Castleton even touched the ball
I can't stand the Dallas Cowboys, but I do enjoy Romo's Corona commercials
Tremendous first half by us despite UF going on a run. Let's keep our legs and our focus and finish this thing!
What's with the VT Logo behind the Abilene Christian logo in the CBS Halftime show?
Was about to post the same
That card bit was a freaking train wreck π
That was one of the most half-assed sportscasting bits I've ever seen and there are a lot to choose from.
I can't tell if Bede is outmatched or just doesn't have his head in the game.
I love his heart, but how can you have a starting PG in a tournament game with no shots and no assists in the first half.
i hope this is just saving Hunter's legs for later
He HAS to score for us to make a run. But he's locking Florida's PG down (Mann)
Bullshit technical call.
Hokies look like garbage coming out of the half. Gotta get their heads back in the game
That's a tech...π?
This technical is complete garbage. If we lose by one it's on the officials now
Possibly the weakest technical of all time.
It's between that, Tim Duncan laughing from the bench, and Rasheed Wallace... looking at the ref.
Ball don't lie
Does Aluma still seem tentative?
He does to me
Tear-drop baskets, rainin' threes, love it!
Alleyne showing me something today. Kid seems real confident this afternoon.
The production quality of this broadcast puts ACCN to shame.
And CBS runs basketball so much less frequently than ACCN. Has the power of major network technology behind it though.
They've always had big-time Saturday CBB games though. I think those kinks have been worked out for decades.
I dont think anyone is surprised by that. Outside of the Super Bowl this is CBS' biggest sports production. Anything less than premier quality would be a same.
I almost wish they'd have let aluma finish that to get his confidence up
I think that is why they fouled.
ouch... all around ouch
Oof
Yikes clean play, but that was brutal
Tough elbow there.
Wow that was brutal. Have to hope the blood is just a nosebleed but not how you want anything to go.
I thought the guy got hit with the ball at first. Hoping he's alright.
Though is this gonna be a technical like in football when the ball carrier lowers their head?
That's a broken nose at least
I am not even sure what's going on right now. That elbow seems to have gotten everyone out of sorts.
Everyone has a game plan until they get punched in the mouth
Apparently no foul at all, just a bad situation. I am worried about Aluma's elbow. Apparently it was a tough nose.
that was bone-on-bone - his elbow connected with the Florida player's forehead
We keep getting tied up in the screens
How was that not a charge? He ran through Cattoor?
Officials starting to give the game to Florida. Pemsl didn't even touch him.
He hit his elbow on the way up
Either that was a foul on the floor or not at all. That should not have been an And 1 opportunity.
Should have been offensive goaltending there. He went up with the ball, missed, hand grabbed the rim and the ball goes in.
I was screaming the same thing. Thought maybe I was the only one
And now a three after no call on the push off that put a Hokie on the floor which threw off the defensive rotation.
Aluma thown to the ground. Play on...
Radford been fouled twice not called.
Radford is a beast. Gotta get Keve going some more, he looks really passive again today.
Ball movement has slowed down considerably, give it to Florida they are running an effective zone. Bede has to attempt to score. His defense and distribution has been great but we need a threat from all 5 spots. π
5 on 8 was anybody really expecting anything different?
Castleton going to work on Aluma
1/2 a step from catoors preffered spot
Not feeling real good about this one. Looking like the UNC game, can't hit a shot and getting killed by the big guy
starting to slide late just like our last game
Yeah me neither....that Bede opportunity to lay it up is all I needed to π
FUCK!
He jumped into Mutts.
Their offense is completely out of flow now. The fact that Bede can't score at all is killing us
Going cold shooting.
We couldn't counter their zone. Give it to the coach, he stuck with it and is forcing our hands to figure it out. All we've done to counter it is drive the lane and heave up bankers...smh
Missing everything
and now we're incapable of rebounding
Inability to get a board on that trip just ended the game. What an unsatisfying way this season ended.
Need Cattoor back on the court
he's going to get back on... i just hope it isn't too late by the time he does
here we go
Fouls mounting
Castleton grabbed both hands SMDH
And then the foul was on us?
I love Radford, but... ain't no way he thought he was dunking over a 6'11" dude.
Oof got blocked and then we fouled??
Foul was intended 54% foul shooter and a minute to go.
Its not the refs fault, we havn't hit a freakin shot in 7 minutes. So disappointing
This one hurts...we fell apart, I said offensive guard play is critical in the tournament. I love Bede, but he's only good for one side of the court. Missing Cone hurt us too. Onto next year...
Edit: this aged well π€¦πΎββοΈ
Don't blame it all on Bede. Aluma has fallen apart the last 3-4 games.
Great point! Keve hurt us BIG time. He was so dynamic earlier in the season, inside, outside, off the dribble. He has checked out the last few games.
listening to the radio but I am guessing we're still not quite game ready
If anyone cares, these WestWood One guys are super-pro Florida.
How did they not call timeout?
big basket there
How big is that Technical free throw now?
If we lose by 1 I will puke
Sounds like after the technical we started playing scared of the officials and that has followed us this entire half.
No matter how this game finishes, much respect to Alleyne for carrying us through the end.
Well
Fuck
Castleton still should have been whistled for a foul there
He knocked Alleyne down.
Should have been two shots
Definitely. He landed on Alleyne
Castleton has gotten away with murder in the second half.
Welp...
Ain't over yet! Alleyne with the big 3
Oh my word!
ONIONS
Never give up, Never Surrender!
π§ π§
There's the Onions!!!
Imagine if we didn't have that Technical against us
Let's Go!!!!!!!!!!
HOKIES!!!
Alleyne is a legend!!!
AMAZING. ALLEYNE ALL DAY!!
Without that technical, we win in regulation.
or if we hadn't gone cold at the FT line.
It's pretty fucking cool Alleyne and VT got an "ONIONS" from Bill Rafferty. That's a trophy in and of itself right there.
That's gonna hurt. Need Mutts to take over
Gave Aluma one of Pemsls fouls.
Lol, the gator player who didn't try to pick up the ball even after it hit his leg and rolled out.
well damn
MUTTS AIN'T FOUL NOBODY PAWWWWWWWL
We are bigger than we've been in years and we still can't handle a decent big man βΉοΈ
we just got a lot smaller out there. going to have to get way more accurate with our shots
I'd just keep giving it to Caslton under the rim. We foul him every time
Even if we don't foul him, they call one.
HUNTER!
shit
Catoor has been our best defender against Castleton
Oof...that three might have been the dagger
Well it was fun watching the game with the rest of you plebs, while the bourgeoisie sequestered themselves to their own thread. Better luck next year! Now back to wrestling.
Pete's threads are the real BB threads.
I am pretty sure this is the most fouls called against us this year.
Disappointing that we only had 13 combined points between Aluma and Mutts, but hats off to Alleyne for carrying the team today.
Hunter also had a good game. The officials had us with the bogus technical and fifth foul on Aluma. They called a rebounding foul on us almost every time down the stretch when the gators missed.
The 1 point technical was a factor.
The fact that our big men were not a factor was the factor.
Plus the wrong count on the Aluma fouls
I went to ESPN Gamecast and counted 5.
Pete said they gave a foul on Pemsl to Aluma, so if they miscounted, it was there.
Really disappointing loss, especially considering Aluma completely disappeared in the last two games (along with other times throughout the season). However we are way ahead of schedule.
Yeah, I heard we will be STORMing back next year
This game was like being at the bar where the pretty girl flirts with you all night. Then its closing time and she kicks you in the balls and leaves with someone else.
Really resonates when you put it like that.
Not the result we wanted but we still had a hell of a year. I'm proud of our Hokies. Watch out for us next year. Let's Go!! π¦π
tough ending to the season. All the questionable calls aside, I have to wonder how much all of the postponed and cancelled games impacted our bench experience, and if would have meant more contributed time in these last couple games. We just looked out of gas the last 5 minutes today and against UNC... I think those lost games to the virus had more of an impact that just our regular season record.
I think it was a huge factor. CBS states we played 3 games in the last 40 days coming into this one. There is no substitute for playing, even if we got to practice during the second pause.
Can't complain, we played super hard and fell apart at the end. Amazing effort to force OT.
I wonder what the reason for no Bamisile this game was? Was he hurt? Just didn't want to play freshman in this situation? With Cone out and with Bede's limitations, I would have liked to seen him in spots.
Dreadful coaching down the stretch. We might as well have just been playing pickup ball at Mccomas, because that's what it looked like. No playcalls, nothing. Just give it to Alleyne or Radford and hope for the best.
Don't even get me started on that out of the timeout play at the end which led to a freaking Pemsl mid range shot.
Very happy with Alleyne and Radford. They nearly carried a poor 2nd half game plan to victory.
Hoping most of these guys come back next year
I hate this take... that's all.
Edit: Better
Look, the coaches ran a beautiful offense in the first half, but we didn't have any of that in the 2nd or OT. I'm not calling on our staff to be fired or anything, but the Florida coaches outcoached them for 25 straight minutes after halftime. You can't win games with pure iso-ball
Except the Florida coaches forgot to foul at the end of regulation, which would have eliminated overtime. Thats a big miss, so not sure about outcoached.
That Pemsl shot was terrible. We also wasted so much time with a minute left then jacked threes when we could've easily got a couple quick twos
OUCH. Good effort and we will see you next year.
We def deserved to lose after pissing away every opportunity to win. It was almost like every time we tied the game or got within one they'd say "let's make sure we have a bad possession and jack a dumb three next time".
Love the fight but we seriously need to work on shot selection and late game strategy.
Man, some rough reactions to the game π¬. Bad coaching? Yikes...
I'll stick to my Bede/Keve frustrations, and say we're ahead of schedule, and if we continue to recruit well we'll be a tournament regular.
Proud to be a Hokie, especially with 3 games in 40 days.
Agree - we're relatively young and didn't have legs the last 5 minutes... thats not bad coaching
Oh absolutely. This year is just the beginning. Young is showing that he can coach a winning program at this level and it's only a matter of time before he is able to put it all together. With UNC and Duke likely to have coaching changes in the next few years, we are positioned very well for the future.
The Oral Roberts win makes this hurt more.
